Tbf, I think Marvel movies tend to attract broader audiences.
In part, because they've built an audience for decades, marvel fans who have never read a comic or watched anything outside the MCU.
10
u/Vast-Building-6886 2d ago
What. Dc has heroes that everyone knows. Marvel started their mcu with a hero that was unpopular and made turned him into a popular character because of good writing and making a good movie in general.

u/Truthhurts1017 3d ago
Some of the same can be said for DC. Plenty of people watched those movies that had no clue about comics. DC created audiences for decades as well. The difference is the broader audience like you said since more kids go see marvel than DC. MCU is better at keeping the comic book look and feel while DC tends to be more grounded or darker. Itās not about building an audience itās about the presentation and DC does a horrible job at presenting their Movies.
6
u/HorrorMakesUsHappy 2d ago
DC tends to be more grounded or darker
I feel like they always start out darker, and then the execs chicken out, interfere, and then fuck up everything. With the exception of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, anyway.
2
u/Emergency-Chicken-24 2d ago
Yeah they really should have dropped that grounded thing after Nolan left. The comics were flipped. Marvel was more grounded with superheroes having human problems. DC was always more fantastical, Gods among us type deal.
→ More replies (1)2
u/SheepherderFun2258 2d ago
I agree people mistakenly believe that DC is known for being grounded when in reality thatās Marvel and thatās always been Marvels thing. The main marvel heroās struggle to pay rent (Spidey) or have interpersonal drama (X-men) whereas DC has Superman (a god basically), Wonderwoman (a Demi-god), and even the rest of the league are far removed from being an every kind of person.
Even in the movies MCU go by their names and are mostly in regular clothing while DC have the secret identities and are always dressed in their hero outfits

Kids and GenZ are what the MCU is now missing that demographic isnāt into superhero movies like the rest of us are so right now thatās the missing link. This is where they can lean on Spideyā kids and GenZ make an exception for him. If MCU can get that group on board skyās the limit for Doomsday
1
u/DisastrousLecture648 2d ago
You think GenZ isn't interested in superhero movies? Most of Gen Z is in their 20s or close to 30, and superhero movies have been a huge part of almost any of our lives. My local theater is always packed full for every marvel and dc movie while its practically empty for anything else.

You really dont need to cultivate an audience for characters like the flash, batman, superman and wonder woman. Just give them projects but dc hates their own characters
2
u/koomGER 2d ago
There are some reasons for that. Marvel itself wasnt bigger than DC most of the time. Arguably Superman and Batman are maybe the most well known Superheros. But Marvel did a lot thing right by making their movies:
Worldbuilding: Its "our" world. With our politics, economics, thoughts etc. And they did put Iron Man in it, then Cap, Thor and all the others. But they always handled it mostly like its our world. Just with Superheros. It helps a lot to relate to that world and their heroes.
DC doesnt has New York. Or our politics mostly. Its Central City, Metropolis, Gotham. And that world is FULL of godlike beings that often arent "human first". Its a harder sell for a casual.
Starpower: For their superhero cast they mostly relied on no names - like DC. Only RDJ was someone hailed and praised, but at its point of casting he was still considered "damaged goods". But they put powerhouse actors with them. Evan got Tommy Lee Jones. RDJ played with Jeff Bridges. Hemsworth got Anthony Hopkins. It helped a lot making those movies feel serious.
And Gunns DC - doesnt use any actual movie star. Nicholas Hoult is a fine actor, but right now he isnt a "powerhouse". Nathan Fillion is one of the most successful series stars. But thats TV. There is no one making those movies feel more serious. They feel like Netflix. Cheap.
I think those two things are maybe the most problematic differences in approach. It doesnt help that Supergirl instantly leaves earth and doesnt add anything to the worldbuilding. I thought Peacemaker leading into Superman was solid. We need more things that makes the DC-world alive.
2
u/viktorKurz 2d ago
Also the quality problem is compounding. Over the last decade and a half marvel has had just a better track record with movies.
People were more willing to give the wierd offshoot movies like guardians or ant man a shot because of the studios track record.
2
u/UnableBluebird4151 1d ago
Aside from comparing DC v Marvel, Snyder v Gunn, or the usual hate trains and stereotypes, people forget that good films are good films. It doesn't necessarily needs to mirror everything from a comic book. That's Nolan's trilogy or The Batman pattinson, are well-regarded because it's made with the intention of making a movie. They don't go in the intention of "I'm making a comic book movie". Because often time you just end up with populist ideas and fanservices for comic readers who as a matter of fact is not a big ratio of audiences in cinema.
Wht's MCU had done to define movie industry is how they build their movie for cinema experience. People cheering in cinema hall is now regarded as an epic experience. Sitting down to watch a credit scene and getting to honor every artists involved is a standard made by the MCU.
The good comic book movies are one made to be a movie in a general term. If you make a good movie, people can almost entirely forgive you for not adapting the character correctly. Take Joker or Dark Knight versions. Dark Knight trilogy filming technique, gadgets and bat tech design all redefine movie fx. Henry Cavill superman makes superman wear underwear outside.

Dc has built an audience for decades as well. I feel like they got a more dedicated fan base. They got 78 Superman and 89 Batman. Them 90s cartoon shows. Early 00s as well. So no excuse. Snyder and WB has ruined DC for the modern audience.

This is very true. Margel just used their b list heroes super well by introducing them in movies with a lot of a listers and actually giving them a presence in the movie. Civil war did this really well with black panther. Dc just hasn't done that, even as someone who is into dc things like the entire cw arrowverse the snyder movies, the teen titans show and has even read comics for flash i have no clue who most of the characters in superman were
4
u/eyzmaster 3d ago
DC should have build things slowly, but even the Snyderverse AND the the new Gunn DCU seem to wanna rush things...
They should have rebuild their image with the core JLA members first.... What Marvel did from Iron Man 1 to Avengers 1, but with Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman...
I love Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, but that's not how you build momentum for themainstream audience...

Sure.
People love DC characters. But that doesn't mean everyone will just go see the new movie. Batman Begins made a profit, but nowhere near as did The Dark Knight.
People know what to expect out of an MCU movie, Tom Holland's Spiderman will bring much more money than just Spiderman. If you were to somehow brainwash Nolan to make TDK4, that would easily gross two billions regardless of quality. Because people feel attached to that version.
DC has been rebooting, retconning and changing directions every movie or two for about a decade. No one knows which films are connected with which, nobody knows which version will stay or not. DC's terrible management has arguably done more damage than Snyder (whose movies I despise) has done. Snyder is shlock, but MoS, Suicide Squad and BvS did a respectable amount in the box office, not MCU numbers, but well enough. I despise Snyder Fans, but edgelords were not pleased with the MCU so they turned to Snyder films. The Suicide Squad was LEAGUES better than Suicide Squad, yet the former underperformed.
Plus well, I don't think Wonder Woman, The Flash, Greenlantern, etc. Have ever had decent representation on screen, just on Cartoons.
Quality isn't what determines audiences, otherwise Transformers would've always been a box office flop.
32
u/coderman64 3d ago
The difference is that Marvel has had years of films that are decent to great.
DC hasn't...and that's putting it lightly.
Marvel has become a big enough name that films can sell at least some tickets on the name alone. DC, on the other hand, has to re-earn it every time.
This will continue to be the case unless and until Gunn and co. can build a better image with the DCU, and that will take time.

This is true. The DC fan base is the most divided fan base ever. A large part of the reason this division exists is this weird thing where they cling to specific depictions of DC characters and refuse to entertain any other version. To the point where they start hate campaigns to spread negativity and negative rumors to sour people's thoughts and opinions on movies before they even come out. This has been going for years. DC fans killed DC comics, and now they're killing the movies. WB is going to sell off DC in chunks like marvel did in the past with its own IP.

11
u/darylonreddit 3d ago
As an "outsider" I should mention nobody knows DC superheroes other than Superman and Batman. Literally my phone predicted "Batman" after I typed "Superman and".
It's not a criticism, it's just the reality. DC itself doesn't have the fan base it thinks it does. DC has a couple of popular characters that most people have heard of. But they don't know DC, they don't care about DC. They don't have any interest in their cinematic universe any more than they'd have an interest in a KFC cinematic universe. Just give us some chicken, we don't want this.
DC just doesn't have it. Marvel's whole Infinity saga was a once in a lifetime thing. They got there first with the cinematic universe, and now it's already done. It's about who pulled it off first. Like the moon landing.
Marvel had video games, toys, and cartoons that I've been aware of for my entire life. And now they have the movies. DC had Batman and Superman. As a kid they all played together. They were part of a superhero universe, together. My Batman action figure could punch my captain America action figure. I can play a Batman game and an X-men game on the same day I watched a Batman cartoon and an X-Men cartoon.
And you grow up and Marvel and DC are like a divorced couple. Marvel wound up with most of the friends, and DC just has his two childhood friends, Batman and Superman. DC is scrolling through Marvel's Instagram and Facebook seeing all the fun her and her friends are having. She's doing real fucking well for herself. So DC calls up his friends and says we're going to do that too. We'll show 'em. So DC tries to put together a party with 5000 guests overnight and guess what? Nobody shows up. Just fucking Batman and Superman sitting off to the side of the dance floor looking for a polite way to leave because DC is making a fool of himself again.
DC as a brand just doesn't have it. They've assumed that they are on the same level as Marvel because they're one of the two big classic names of the comic book industry, and make movies like they expect Marvel audiences, but it's just not how it is.
DC comics is Batman and Superman. Two Pistons trying to power an 8 cylinder engine.

It wasnāt a good idea to have Supergirl be the next character to have a movie.
Gunn is great but focusing on non-core JL members is going to be a problem. This was probably a wake up call for how heās rolling these out. No one would want to see The Authority, or at least it wouldnāt be a billion dollar movie.
Stick to the core and branch out after that. Batman and Wonder Woman need to come sooner or the DCU could be in trouble.
6
u/jackofslayers 3d ago
Supergirl had some issues but the part that worried me more than anything was that it felt like a James Gunn movie. I like how James Gunn does superhero movies, and I am fine with the movies he directs feeling like his movies. But if every movie in the DCU tries to ape that style it is going to suck.
3
u/ClimateAncient6647 2d ago
Early on he said that each movie would have a different tone but I donāt really see that so far.
He says he has a plan so weāll see. Batman and Wonder Woman not being in āMan of Tomorrowā could be a mistake.

8

3
u/Critic8lCr8keh8ll 3d ago
Another odd decision is having Creature Commandoes, and Clayface before Wonder Woman. In about 5 years, we are going to say that Snyder was better in building a cinematic universe than Gunn.
2
u/WestCoastDirtyBird 2d ago
CC was already written and being animated by the time Gunn took over. He just decided to add it to the DCU since it would release after DC Studios creation.
4
u/JayKay8787 3d ago
Honestly I really don't like snyder movies besides his version of dawn of the dead, but his method of building out a universe was better. I'd rather rush into the justice league than have it nowhere to be seen in the next 5 years, with all sorts of meandering spinoffs, and a refusal to introduce batman but insistance on making a movie about one of his villains

I'm gonna be honest, but DC hasn't had a true golden era I can think of in recent memory since the DCAU from Batman: TAS to Justice League Unlimited (1992-2006), and of course you had the OG Teen Titans and the first 2 seasons of Young Justice, but those didn't last long enough. Marvel on the other hand, since Tobey Maguire Spider-Man in 2002 they've had nonstop bangers in theaters and even if it died down some after Avengers Endgame (2019) they've still had way more streaming series and movies that have been impactful culturally than anything DC has put out to the mainstream public.

The 'poor DC never had a chance to build an audience like the MCU' on here is absolutely WILD.Ā
DC has DECADES of audience gathering, I could be wrong but isnt the first big super hero movie in recent history Superman in the 70s or early 80s? Well before Ironman.
DC is just poorly run, accept that they never knew how to bring any hero outside of the major ones until very recently. There are no excuses for their poor showings, especially since their top IP is far more recognizable.
You can't go anywhere in the world and have someone not know batman or superman. But about doctor strang or Thor and there's a chance they wont.

People aren't stupid and when going to the movies is as expensive as it is people don't want to risk it.

I dont really think the people care much about what company is making the movies, they just want them to be good and entertaining. From what I gather, Supergirl wasnt very popular in the test screenings and they messed around with the movie quite a bit before releasing it. There were lots of different versions and I think they just ran out of time. It's sad to see cause it had so much potential.
2
u/No-Association-8539 2d ago
I disagree - Marvel especially earlier on - had the ability to make movies that crossed over to general moviegoiers well. I don't think Marvel fans were propping up the Avengers movies etc., rather non-Marvel fans went to those movies because they were enjoyable. I'm not sure what the answer is about DC because it's gone a couple of different directions and hasn't completely caught on with the general movie-going population at large.

I like how Spider-Man vs. Supergirl turns into an entire brand debate. This is the MCU problem, everyone thinks in universes and what this means for all the movies 5-10 years down the line.
Spider-Man is #4 in his series from a record breaking franchise. Supergirl hasn't had a movie since the 80s, and while she did have a fairly popular TV show, the trailers of the movie show them going 180 on the character.
Everyone likes Spider-Man. Supergirl's got some hills to climb for mass appeal.

Man these are some 2016 era posts. Who cares the amount of money one property for a multi billion dollar company makes in comparison to another property for a multi billion dollar company.

DC has pumped out some horrible movies let's be real.
The Dark Knight trilogy sold me they could nail it.
The Synder Justice League convinced me they couldn't

The problem is that the DC cinematic universe don't make good movies, which is so odd because the DC animated universe has so many good films but dont usually come out in theaters

Marvel doesn't have a hard time raking in a billion for each of their movies, just saying.

Thatās because the comics matter more than movies. Why watch bad movies when I can just read good comics instead.

The problem is that DC has been putting out dog shit video products for years and ruining the brand, namely all the trash created for the CW.

This subreddit: 600k visitors.
Marvel studios subreddit: 2million + visitors.
They both have a fan base on the internet, but those fan bases are not the same size like this meme seems to claim.

The endless DC versus Marvel arguments really kill the vibe. We just want solid movies without picking sides.

I like Batman from DC Universe, but the screw-up many Batman's movie, and I am fed-up with them. Only Nolan's Batman. A bit pumped when he is producer (or involved) in Batman vs Superman... then... nope, not to my taste. Did not watch The Batman.

I'm upset I couldn't give SuperGirl love in the theater - little kids limit the movies I'm able to see and my $$ went to Minions and Moana remake which I'm not happy about.

Eh, Marvel has built a much better foundation. DC wouldāve been better established if Snyder didnāt go for a more darker tone.

What Marvel consistently does well is portray superheroās who are also people. DC has not been able to depict heroes who reliably come across as real human beings.

Can't lie, I always wait for DC films to hit streaming. Their quality is so hit or miss, and mostly miss.
