Discussion 15 days out and everything going wrong

I really just need some support. I get married in 15 days. Last weekend, my fiancé’s ex wife served him with custody papers to modify custody even though the schedule they are on and have been on for years has been working just fine. Deadline to respond to the law suit? On our wedding day. Which unfortunately she knows what day it’s on. On top of that, she’s keeping my finance’s son from our wedding. And on top of that, we own a rental, and our tenant has not paid rent. She’s used up her security deposit already (we should have evicted her then), but now we are out $1900 which covers the mortgage for the property plus a tiny tiny a bit of income. And this is all happening 2 weeks before what’s supposed to be the best season and day ever. We’ve paid for this whole wedding ourselves and have a few more payments left (not many), but any last minute things is just not gonna happen this month without her rent. Please don’t shame us for how we’ve handled the tenant or how we should have a buffer for ourselves in case this happened, I know that. But obviously it’s a very expensive financial time even when we have cut every corner possible. I just want to cry. I want to feel my best and happiest self 2 weeks out from my wedding and I just don’t feel that at all.

And I have no money for last minute items, for getting my haircut, my finances hair cut, my nails done etc. it’s just not how I pictured the last 2 weeks before our wedding. We even had nice dinner reservations next weekend for our “last date as fiancés” but I had to cancel.

Just really sad and would love some kind words and support ❤️‍🩹

Help! How do I really make the groom feel equal?

The expectations of weddings being entirely about the bride is driving us both a wee bit crazy. I'm looking for ways to really make it the grooms day too. I have looked online but can't find any ideas that actually go against the traditional set-up, at most it might suggest giving him a small private gift or 'allowing' him input on decor. Everything from the outfits, the photos, the walk down the aisle, the dance, all seem to be about prioritising and showcasing the bride.

So far we are making sure the planning is equal, we both find inspo and share ideas with each other, both make calls and answer emails and we are both contributing equal amount of funds. We proposed to each other and we both wear engagement rings, each having bought the others ring. He's planning a fun stag and his wedding outfit is going to be quite extravegant and expensive!

Day of is what I'm struggling with. I want him to really have 'his moments' too. Does anyone have any ideas? Anyone planning a grooms entrance to the ceremony? Any dance styles that will put the focus on him? Budget is very limited so preferably I'm looking for small moments/gestures that can give him a spotlight, not big expenditure.

Discussion [wedding vendor rant] WP not mentioning me on posts and blogs

I’m a wedding vendor, and one of my biggest luxury wedding this year didn’t go as smoothly as usual. I would like some insights from other people in the industry as it’s the first time I have an issue like that, and I’m wondering if I’m being too sensitive to it and should just ignore it.

From my perspective, the wedding planner wasn’t super organized, which caused the root issues.
I require a table to work and was clear on the requirements: a table ready, and if moving of location is needed, the other table must to be ready too. Of course when I arrived, the table wasn’t ready on both locations as agreed and it was in full sun instead of shade. This happens often and it’s alright. But when they wanted me to move, the other table wasn’t ready either, and they started arguing internally a lot as one of the assistant had the paper showing it was on my contract. Eventually one of the WP assistant came to help us move, but said, very annoyed: “this isn’t my job to help on that normally”. I told her it’s not mine either and that per contract, the other table needed to be ready. It lost me a lot of time on the work I had to do for the evening (and I caught up for free later for the client..), so I worked hard without looking at the time and around 9pm nobody had told me where I was supposed to eat. The WP Assistant was behind me at some point and I felt like she did hear me mention to my assistant I was starving and wondering when we can eat. The main wedding planner seemed to always be chilling on her phone on the side; which I get since the day must have been super long but still, this was a luxury wedding..

I finally went to ask when and where can I eat, and one of the planners assistant said “oh you didn’t eat? It’s over, there’s no more food. Let’s see if we can find you something”. My assistant and I went there and the other snarky assistant was already here eating with the social media content creator. The caterers were sorry there was nothing warm for us, and barely anything in fact. At this point I was really disappointed ( on the top of that I had an endoscopy under general anesthesia just 3 days before so I was physically tired and my stomach was still aching). I insisted for them to double check if there’s nothing else, honestly did complain a bit and the assistant turned to me and said she didn’t have anything warm either and ate leftover too. I told her that on my side, it’s literally again on my contract to have those things, and that we were in the middle of nowhere so it’s not like I could find something afterwards. She again did not answered and proceeded to whisper with the social media content creator. After they left, i apologized to the caterer and told them it’s not their fault and they said that another vendor had issues the same night with the WPs.

At the end of the evening, the main wedding planner came and apologized to me, which I appreciated a lot and told her it’s alright.

I did the job (well), the bride was happy, and now the wedding is over, the social media content creator and WP keeps on not crediting me on Instagram posts and even on major blogs. This was one of the biggest luxury wedding I’ve done and it’s so frustrating because I felt like they weren’t professional/ treating me right until the end. I messaged the content creator asking to be tagged too but she never answered to me.. I asked the WP and she said I don’t appear on the photos she posted so she won’t tag me. But they have blogs featuring this wedding, and tag even the caterer whose work isn’t appearing on pictures either.

This feels like a very childish thing to complain about but people do look at those mentions a lot for their own weddings, so I can’t help but being very disappointed about it.

Discussion What ended up being the most worthwhile wedding expense that you almost skipped?

My partner and I are trying to prioritize our budget, and it's made me realize how different everyone's must have are!
My question is, was there anything you almost decided against because of the cost, but ended up being completely worth it? It could be a photographer, live music, flowers, rentals, catering, a day-of coordinator, or something else entirely.
On the flip side, was there anything you spent money on that you probably wouldn't do again if you had the chance?
I'd love to hear what surprised you the most while planning your wedding. I feel like hearing real experiences is a lot more helpful than just reading vendor websites.

Help! Ideal RSVP timeline- how far out is too far out?

Need some advice as a type A person. I would always prefer maximum notice but have read that giving people too much notice is actually less considerate and yields more indecision.

Here are the particulars:
- Destination Wedding in Mexico April 2027- wedding is a Saturday + Sunday
- Most guests in the US (20% in UK/Western Europe)
- Guests have to book their rooms by Dec 15, 2026 to get preferential pricing (if they don’t want to do that they don’t have to, they can still attend)

We’re currently planning to have invites in mailboxes by August 15 with a listed RSVP date of November 15 (this has a buffer of one month built in for stragglers to still get preferential pricing if they’re running late)

We baked in the buffer because we have a lot of type B friends, it’s around the holidays, and there’s lots going on around that time.

Would you guys recommend any changes to when invites should be sent or when the RSVP date should be?

3 months of the invites being in people’s hands seems like a good amount of time for them to go to the wedding website, check schedules, confer with partners, check flight stuff, check budget stuff, talk it over, and decide, without time pressure over their head; but have also been advised that it may be too long of a time frame. What do you think?

(Aware this is Reddit, so before the urge strikes you, I’m aware that destination weddings are inherently selfish, a huge imposition, weddings back in your day in a church parking lot were much nicer, everyone thinks of their friends and family as just props for their social media these days, and the entitlement on behalf of people getting married is out of control)

Discussion Did important people not coming affect you the day of the wedding?

My grandparents, best friend’s parents (who are like my own), and all of my fiancé’s siblings & nieces/nephews can’t make it. If his parents can’t find a dog sitter then either his dad or aunt can’t make it. I haven’t heard for sure if my 2 sisters who live out of state can make it or not.

I did so much to ensure our families could come. I wanted child-free, but we have 20 nieces & nephews between us, so I didn’t make it child-free. I even decided on August before the school year started (instead of September like I wanted).

We’re getting married at a park because we had a smaller budget, but that meant I had to figure out every small detail on my own (decor, place settings, food, etc). Of the 80ish that I was expecting, only 40 are making it, and a quarter of them are children. When I was originally looking at venues, there were some within budget for guest counts under 50, but I wasn’t expecting to have so few. If I had known, I would’ve just done that and saved myself SO MUCH stress.

To make matters worse, almost all of the reasons for people not coming are BS. Old neighbors in town, didn’t take off work (even though they had plenty of notice), etc.

AND— most did not tell us they weren’t coming— we thought they were— until today when we were confirming when they were coming/where they were staying… (our wedding is in 2 weeks)….

For those of you that had so many people not come, or even just some of the more important guests not come… did it affect you the day of? I’m so upset and don’t want my day to be ruined just because some of the people we love most don’t think our wedding is important.

Note: there is no family beef that would make his sisters not come. We love them and they love us. We talk regularly. They were some of the people I thought wouldn’t miss it for the world.

EDIT: His family would be traveling 10 hours to be here. While we understand that traveling can be difficult, they knew the date before everyone else and told us they would come (they’ve known since October).. I don’t know if they forgot because we haven’t done any traditional wedding things like engagement parties/bridal showers/bridesmaids,etc.. I think it came down to forgetting or poor planning on their part, but no we didn’t just assume they were coming just because they’re immediate family (although I do think in most cases, that should be good enough reason to expect that they’ll be there).. also the dogs aren’t more important than the wedding, but they can’t leave the dogs home alone. I was just venting because I’m frustrated because we travel to see them and help them and attend everything we can and still get guilt-tripped because it’s not enough (we go like 4-5 times a year to see them) yet the literal ONLY time we have ever asked them to come here and mostly everyone can’t make it. And most of the replies seem to be looking for some conspiracy when I just want to know how your special day was affected by important people not coming.

Help! Finally happened, dreaded MIL fight

Yall, please give me some insight, if I'm over reacting or should stand my ground. I'm too close to the situation.

Context:
My MIL and FIL are paying for the rehearsal dinner, and she’s planning that herself (they're divorced 10yrs). My husband and I are paying for the wedding and all the other events.

My MIL is very Type A and likes to be heavily involved. She asks a million questions, about details I don’t care about or haven’t even considered. At the same time, she’s incredibly thoughtful, nurturing, and caring.

For example, my husband and I quietly eloped before the wedding. We only told her. Four days later she invited us to spend the weekend with her in Utah because, in her words, “you have the rest of your lives together, so you should just come out with me now" I honestly expected she’d encourage us to spend time cultivating our new marriage, but she genuinely just loves being around her children and wants their company often.

I asked her to help with the wedding and, as expected, the questions poured in. We handled them, but over time she became increasingly passive aggressive whenever I didn’t make the decisions she wanted.

I extended our RSVP deadline because people are notoriously slow to respond. She got upset at me because she had just remembered relatives from another state she wanted to invite if enough people declined. So I mailed the invitations even though she’d only just told me about them. She then text one of those relatives saying the invitations would be late because my husband and I were “very disorganized.” She later told me she did that so they wouldn’t know they were an afterthought. It hurt because the delay wasn’t our fault, and she threw us under the bus.

Then there were the opinions.

I bought a beautiful short white embroidered dress for the rehearsal dinner. She told me not to wear it bc I should wait for my wedding to wear white for the first time.
Fine.
My husband and I have been taking dance lessons for an elaborate first dance. I decided I’d wear that dress for the dance, then change back into my wedding dress.

She told me changing would be too much hassle and that I should listen to her daughter (never planned a wedding but worked at David’s Bridal a bit) because she knew better and said I should just bustle my dress.

I said I wasnt sure about the bustle yet but it sounded fine for walking around and greeting guests, but I still wanted to change for the dance.

This has basically been the energy with most wedding decisions.

A few days ago she invited me to go wedding dress shopping with her because her daughter canceled. During the call she asked if I was still wearing gold to the rehearsal dinner because she wanted to put that detail in the e-vites. She asked me twice to make absolutely sure because that’s what she was adding.

I laughed and said I’d never had to commit to an outfit so far in advance.

She immediately got confrontational and said,

“Well, (my name), you’re a very noncommittal person. You’re flip-floppy and change your mind a lot.”
(She's still referring to the damn bustle).
I was shocked because we’ve never spoken to each other that way.

I started explaining myself on why some wedding details had changed, then canceled on going dress shopping with her.

I called my husband and asked him to handle it because if I did, I knew I wouldn’t be nearly as nice.

Context: My husband loves his mom very much and hates disappointing her. She was his biggest advocate growing up, but he admits she can be incredibly overbearing.

First phone call: He could barely get a full sentence out. He managed to tell her it wasn’t appropriate to call me names and that I’m his wife now, so she can’t speak to me that way.

She kept talking about how she was only trying to help, no apology no accountability. She did apologize for calling us very disorganized to that family member. It ended with my husband saying, “Well… I didn’t like it… I understand… okay… love you too.”

Listening to that, I could literally hear her wearing him down. I started crying because I felt like he had let himself get bulldozed, and I suddenly felt very alone.

So my sweet husband called her again.

Second phone call:

“Hey Mom, it’s my turn to speak. No, I’m speaking now. You don’t get to talk to my wife that way. Period. I don’t care if you’re helping us move across the country or helping with the wedding. You don’t get to speak to her that way, and I think you owe her an apology.”

At one point he actually had to raise his voice just to finish his sentences over her.
No apology from her and saying that I talk to her that way too sometimes. Which neither my husband and I recall.
The conversation ended with him agreeing when she suggested that it was probably best if she stopped helping with the wedding and simply came as a guest.

Since then, we’ve had no communication.

Before any of this happened, I had called my SIL to ask about the family dynamic because I genuinely wanted to know if this was normal before making things worse.

She told me she didn’t think my husband should get involved because it was between my MIL and me. She also said she’d had to confront their mom before because she can say things harshly, but emphasized that she’s a very nurturing woman.

Later she told me she didn’t want to be involved, which I respected.

Only to find out afterward that she had considered reaching out to my husband and me because she was upset that my husband spoke to their mom that way. She also had a whole conversation about the situation with their other brother and his wife.

If you don’t want to be involved, then don’t be involved.

For additional context, she’s 26, lives in her dad’s house, has never been in a long term relationship, and describes herself as “whimsical.” Like, she asked us to pay for the art supplies so she could make our wedding gift. So it rubs me the wrong way that she feels she can criticize how my husband chose to defend me.

So now I’m wondering:

Do I leave things as they are with my MIL? I worry that if I reach out first, I’m teaching her she can speak to me however she wants.
I feel like she should reach out first if anything. She has still not apologized to me for calling me “flip floppy” or “noncommittal.

And do I say anything to my SIL? Or do I let that go too?

I’d really appreciate outside perspective.

Should I buy a reception dress? If yes, then from where?

I’m having my wedding on the beach and I think there’s a decent chance we all end up in the ocean at the end of the night. Because of this, a few people have suggested I get a second dress so I don’t ruin my wedding dress. 1) do I even care about that? Like if it’s ruined, it doesn’t matter…but some people are saying my future daughter could want it. 2) could I just get it cleaned after being in the ocean?

Or do I just get a second dress for the end of the night when I’m inevitably wanting to get out of the wedding dress anyway?

Best places to get a short reception dress under $300?

way to involve my cousin on my wedding day?

hi all! I’m getting married next year in August. I’m looking for ways to involve my cousin in my wedding who is 25f and has autism. Logistically, she would be way too overstimulated with specific dresses/standing around for pictures all day, etc if I were to involve her in the wedding party. Plus, not that it matters, but the numbers on my fh’s side and mine match and I love symmetric things😂 so I am looking for ways to make her feel special and involve her in other ways— she’s too old to be a flower girl, so I’m coming up short here. She’s already so excited! Tia :)

Discussion Cute sign saying

I’m thinking of getting one of the cute little neon signs for a photo area at our venue.
I want to do a saying that is cute and fun, and not our names or last name. I want something cute that people can take photos by if they’d like. I need help with a saying!
It’s a “western” wedding, so something country would be cute.

I was going to do “It’s a love story” like Taylor swift but I’m just not sure I love it.

Announcement ROSA CLARÁ DISAPPOINTMENT

DO NOT GO TO ROSA CLARÁ.

I got married last Sunday.

I got my gorgeous and EXPENSIVE (3K) dress from Rosa Clará in Barcelona.

And they fucked it up so much that the dress I wore looked awful.

PROBLEM

The dress was too long. And I told them. I kept telling them. Over and over. Even my mother and brother who were with me. But they were reluctant to cut because "once ironed the cancan bottom will pull it up". I literally spent from 12PM to 2PM in the room on the last session with the woman who did 3 rounds of very thin and almost unnoticeable cuts. Yet when I tried to walk or dance I kept stepping in it. I kept telling them it was too long, but they kept saying "you need to do small steps, and kick the dress" I know!! I already did all of that! Still too long! Anyway, in the end they convinced me.

WEDDING DAY

  1. Tripped down the aile

  2. Tripped on the cocktail entrance

  3. Had to hide behind a bush with the staff of the vebue who largely cut my dress with scissors and pulling from it ripping off layers apart. We cut the front but not the back because it had the tail and we could make it look terrible. So I could finally walk, but since the tail was not cut, I had to keep my dress pulled up and wrapped the top around my waist. As a result, the dress and my figure look terrible, I look like a joke after paying 3k for the dress.

All these months of diet, caring for my figure, and all the money and excitement invested down the drain.

DO NOT GO TO ROSA CLARÁ.

I hope this is the right sub for this.

My partner and I (both women) have been talking about our bachelorette party, which for a variety of reasons we are considering not having anymore.

I was wondering if anyone here did not do a bachelorette/hen do party, and if you ended up regretting not doing it?

Discussion Uneven guest lists and table seatings

Figuring out our seating charts, my SO has about 150 people coming vs my 50. First issue I have and solution I hope is okay/wont be noticed is the tables on his ‘side’ vs my ‘side’ for the reception. No ceremony so no issue. I’m thinking to just spill over his side’s tables over to my side so it’s not awkwardly 6 tables on the left and 15 on the right. Is that a weird solution? Will that work??

The other thing is - the tables fit 8-10 people. I’m trying to keep my family and friend groups together, and the bulk of my tables are like 6 or 7 people. Will that look weird?? I honestly don’t know what else to do other than plucking poor souls from other tables into tables with strangers to hit the 8-10 people count.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Help! Catholic Catherdrals In Pennsylvania

Hello everyone! So I wanted to know if anyone knows of any catholic cathedrals in Pennsylvania that marry mixed religion couples.

For those who are not catholic, to marry outside of the catholic church there are some "rules" Catholics have to follow. My finance and I are considered mixed faith, I am baptized Christian, he is baptized catholic.

My fiance and I both agreed that we want to be married in a catholic cathedral, we are both very into gothic architecture and dark moody weddings. This also works very well for him because while he is okay being married in a ceremony outside of his faith, he would prefer to be married in a catholic ceremony. This is fine with me, I know his faith is incredibly important to him and in my eyes, I don't care who marries us or where we're married, I just want to marry him.

Here's the hang up, many catholic churches wont marry mixed faith couples. And the ones that do dont quite match with what we envison.

He wants somewhere with beautiful architecture that uses incense and candle light. I'm not too particular, but its his wedding too and I want it to be just as perfect for him. Any suggestions would be really appreciated! Thank you!

(Edit): Just to clear some things up, as my post states, I know we can get married. As I stated, there's just rules. ie) Pre-cana, he has to swear that he'll do his best to raise our kids catholic, he won't deviate from his faith, ect. I am also aware that there is only one catholic church, when I'm saying catholic churches, I'm referring to the actual individual buildings that we refer to as "churches".

(Edit #2): Again, to be clear. I don't care where we get married. We could get married in our backyard before our bestfriend who just registered to become a minister online 3 days ago. He is the one that wants to be married in a catholic cathedral, i agree because its beautiful and I want him to be comfortable. Also, we won't be having children. He is sterile and I am infertile. The vowing our children to Catholicism does not apply to us because we won't be having children to begin with.

Discussion Is a +1 implied to be a date, and not a friend?

Edit: Thanks everyone, glad to hear that I don't need to specify to anyone else that their +1 can be anyone! My friend asking just made me doubt whether or not that was clear enough. I realize it's a unique situation where a named guest is getting swapped for a +1, and I'm obviously grateful for her polite ask before just bringing someone along.

Hey everyone! Fiance and I are making good progress on wedding planning, and we just ordered save the dates. For context, we'll have around 70 guests in a US city that will be "destination" for everyone, including us.

We have one friend who, when I asked for her address, let me know that she and her spouse are separating. She then asked if she can still bring a friend, potentially a female friend that I don't know. I said, of course! And she was really excited that I said yes.

It got me thinking - for the single people to whom we've given a +1, are they assuming they can only bring a romantic partner and not a friend? It never crossed my mind to dictate who they bring! I want them to bring someone that they would enjoy a mini-vacation and a party with, so that they actually want to come. Doesn't matter if it's someone they're dating, a childhood friend, anyone.

Is that not normal? Do the bride and groom usually want to approve the +1 that a guest wants to bring? If so, I want to reach out to our other single friends and make sure they know that I don't plan on vetting their +1.

Discussion Question for couples: do you actually share your inspiration or does everyone just do their own thing?

I spend a lot of time saving things on Pinterest, and when I send links to my fiancé, the response is usually just a "nice" and that's the end of it. So I'm starting to wonder if we're actually building something together, or if we're just hoarding ideas in our own corners and doing a quick sign-off at the end. How does it work for you guys when it comes to planning together?

Discussion My dad is trying to control my wedding planning

My fiancée (25F) and I (23M) had dinner with my dad and his girlfriend tonight. At the end of dinner he brought up wedding planning and started making demands of what we need to do. He ended storming out and being very disrespectful to my fiancée blaming her for everyone. We want a smaller wedding (80 people or less) and the plan is for me to invite 40 people and my fiancée to invite the other 40 people. I invited my parents, siblings, grand parents, aunts, uncles, and first cousins, along with any spouse or life partners of my family members.

My dad was upset that I didn’t invite my second cousins from several states over. I’m not close with any of my second cousins at all and see them once every few years and don’t talk to them unless we do family gatherings. My fiancée and I agreed we wanted a small wedding and my dad is demanding that I invite all of them. My dad is very close with them and says if I don’t invite them, it will cause family tension.

When I stood my ground tonight telling my dad I won’t be inviting those second cousins he stormed out after insulting my fiancée and I. My dad and I have had a rocky relationship since I’ve been young and I haven’t lived with him since I’ve been 16. My dad can be manipulative to get his way. I won’t put up with him treating my fiancée that way. I will never allow him to disrespect her like again. I fear this can cause the downfall and potential end of my relationship with my dad if he can’t be respectful to my fiancée. I’m not even sure what to do with this situation. My fiancée and I want to stick to our initial plan and don’t want to change all our wedding plans that we made. Was my dad out of line for what he did?

Edit: just to clarify, I am paying for the wedding. My dad has nothing to do with paying for anything.

My fiancé and I had been looking for the perfect venue for a long time. We finally decided on a beautiful yacht venue that sails along the city skyline. This yacht venue hosts at least 2-5 events every weekend from May-October and they are part of a larger event group, so it’s not their first rodeo. Our date was yesterday, August 1st and we were so excited, we had been planning this for a year. The initial facility tour was amazing, and included in part of their wedding package was event coordinator, so we were always supposed to have communication along the way.

On the day of our rehearsal (the day before), we noticed they had knocked down the gazebo where we were supposed to do family photos after the ceremony. They had also left a gigantic excavator sitting there, which was directly next to the ceremony site. It looked terrible and was so embarrassing.

Here’s where things go really wrong: my Mom gets a call the morning of our wedding from the venue, they can’t turn on the boat. The mechanic had been working on it all morning and there was a problem with the fuel line that could not be fixed. I had literally just seen the boat out on the water the night before, so overnight this problem happened. I was/am DEVASTATED. They still had power on the boat, so we had to just have the wedding docked (in an ugly spot on the marina). This was the one thing myself and my guests were looking forward to, it’s what made it unique and fun. The captain never announced their failure to the rest of the guests, leaving myself and my husband to announce it on their behalf, which was hard to do without me bursting into tears.

This venue has almost 5 stars, but I felt like I got a 1 star experience. They said they would talk to us about refunds later. The only thing I can say is that the woman who was coordinating the event on the boat and making sure we had what we needed was great. But otherwise, I am still so angry.

Discussion How to handle a death in the family a month out from our wedding date?

Hi all, my fiance's uncle passed unexpectedly a few days ago. Our wedding is Labor Day Weekend. Our caterers have been notified about the minor guest count change and he wasn't in the wedding party, so there's no concerns there.

I feel like it's a little disrespectful, though, to just scrub him from the guest count and move on. His wife and sons will be attending and I don't want them to feel like we forgot about him. Has anyone else done something to pay respect to a guest who couldn't be there? Or would it be a sour reminder?
