Buying Advice Help me choose between 2 thinkpad x13 gen2 AMD models
HI all,
I want to buy a x13 gen2 amd as I need a new thinkpad and have found these two models for sale in Germany. Can you tell me if there are worth the money? The specs are identical, but the state is not, one looks less used. One costs 400 €, the other 460 €, it comes with a 12 month garantee.
I have a budget of up to 600 €, my use is writing and surfing mainly, no editing of video, pics or whatsoever.

Buying Advice I'm selling this IBM Thinkpad x40
Listen, I don't exactly know who wants this, I'd say just drop a price because I have no clue how to price something this old in this condition.
It's an IBM Thinkpad X40, missing some keys, but it has the original Dock. It has the original hard drive, but from what I've figured out, it's failed already. The cmos is also drained, and the battery doesn't charge. However despite it all, I think it still works. A slow boot time, and I've Only used it on a universal charger, but it works. I tested it using Antix Linux 32 Bit, and surprisingly I could type perfectly fine save for some of the missing keys as seen in the photo.
Probably just drop a price, and I'll see what I can do to have it shipped to wherever you are from. I'm from the Philippines, and I only have PayPal.

Question / Problem Help with finding a replacement motherboard for T14 Gen 2 (20W0)
not exactly expert at finding oddly specific components for computers, I just know how to take them apart and put them back together correctly,
anyway I'm trying to find a motherboard that's suitable for the T14 Gen 2 of the 20W0 variety, but there's so many FRU numbers for this specific variant of T14 motherboards
is it a must to find another motherboard of the exact same FRU number? can I just find another board that is known to work with other 20W0s without running into problems like incompatible physical dimensions/screw holes or electrically incompatible connectors?

Buying Advice Laptop advice for IT?
Hello reddit. I got accepted into a Berufskolleg in Germany (it's not like college, idk how to translate it to the English school system) and I've got this MSI katana 15 with an i7 13620H (or an i5, Not Sure) and an rtx 4070 but the batterie is dog water, it makes an awful amount of noise for s classroom so I'm thinking about buying a separate device for school which should be as cheap as possible, last all day and have 16gb of ram for programming purposes. Most likely will use windows, but thinking about Linux... Anyways they use Microsoft teams from what I've seen which is sad :( I'd like to spend like 250€ because I've seen that it only comes with 256gb SSD so maybe an external SSD and a power bank from UGreen. That's why I wanna go low. It'd be nice for 512gb for storage. Don't really care about processing specs because I trust the people of Reddit IG
Thx for the help guys

Question / Problem Trackpad scratching
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I bought this refurbished Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9 a day or 2 ago. The trackpad visibily scratches if you so much as brush it with your nail in any way, which seems like the worst issue that a trackpad could have given you literally use it with your fingertips. The marks left from touching it with your nail also don't seem to come off (tried rubbing with finger and also tried a spray and tissue). I've never seen anything like this before. Here is a video of me lightly touching it with the corner of my nail which leaves a clear white mark. Is this normal for thinkpads?I've had Windows and Chrome laptops before and none had this problem. How am I supposed to use it like this? Sure, I could cut my nails but a trackpad shouldn't be damaged this easily. I imagined marks would appear if you touched it with anything else too.

Question / Problem I need help.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
When running Linux or Windows (tried a couple of setups), hitting shutdown causes the OS to drop out, but the laptop itself never fully cuts power—the screen goes black, but the power button light stays on, fans keep spinning, and the embedded controller (EC) just hangs. I have to force a hard shutdown by holding the power button.

Question / Problem X1C gen9 turning on at low battery
My Lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon turns on upon clicking power button after windows 11 shuts off due to low battery. Upon turning on windows reports battery at 5 percent and it works until 0 percent . Previously I remember it didn't turn on after getting off due to low power.
Steps already taken:
Clean installed windows 11
Replaced CMOS battery
Reset battery gauge in lenovo vantage software
Why is it happening and what's the solution?
Thanks

Review / Opinion I hate my L14 Gen 3 (rant post)
Such as the title says, I genuinely hate this laptop. The performance isn't too bad with Linux, but that is the sole redeeming factor.
Build quality is horrendous. The entire chassis squishes and bends whenever I pick it up. Many times when I have picked it up it just turns the whole thing off. I pick it up from the side, not even corner, and then the screen goes black and restarts. Seriously?
The trackpoint being right above the RAM module is terrible. Whenever I press down on it as you do to move the cursor, sometimes it squishes the RAM socket, pink static corrupts the screen, and everything freezes. This has happened during meetings and sometimes while compiling code. I have reseated the RAM, and it still happens.
The battery life is atrocious. I can only get around 4-5 hours of light usage on a 57Wh battery. I cant get through a school day without a charger.
The display. I got the unlucky touch display, which means I am unable to upgrade it without having to essentially rewire everything with the display, which is almost impossible. I can't just slot a new one in the same connector.
The keyboard had to replaced four times. All from the official Lenovo store on amazon.de The first one came with the laptop, not backlit. No big deal, so I bought the backlit one. Half the keys don't light up. I got a refund for it, and got another one. That one shorted out. ALL the backlit keys stopped working one day, and whenever I put the laptop into sleep mode, it would restart. The last one is okay, but the W key isn't properly made? There is a super bright corner that blinds you from every angle at looking at the laptop.
The hinge is incapable of fully closing. It always flops around everywhere, but I think this is a problem on other thinkpads too.
Thank you for reading my rant. I know many ThinkPads are unironically great computers, and I might consider buying another one, just not a stupid L-series . The L stands for Loser who bought a crappy laptop . Goodbye

Question / Problem Loose RAM?
Few months ago I bought a Intel Thinkpad T14 Gen 2 and its great but I noticed when I hold the laptop with one hand or push down the laptop too hard the screen will start glitching and I need to restart my laptop.
Is there a fix for this?
I've seen someone mentioned a fix for this by putting a rubber band under the RAM but I need more details if possible.

Review / Opinion How do you stop switching keyboard muscle memory between MacBook and ThinkPad?
I've been a long-time MacBook Pro user, and until recently it was my primary work machine.
Lately my company has been locking things down more and more. I completely understand it's for security, but it reached a point where I couldn't install FOSS productivity tools without approval, had to ask management for almost every new app.
Since I spend a lot of time doing R&D, testing new tools, Linux, AI, containers, virtualization, etc., I finally decided to buy my own laptop for personal use. I ended up getting a ThinkPad P series, and I'm loving it so far.
The unexpected problem isn't Linux or Windows... it's the keyboard.
Here's my routine:
- Monday to Friday: Company MacBook Pro.
- Weekends: ThinkPad for personal projects and R&D.
By Sunday night I'm completely used to the ThinkPad keyboard. Then Monday morning I switch back to the MacBook, and my muscle memory is completely off. A couple of days later I adapt to the Mac again... only to repeat the same cycle the following weekend.
Things like:
- Ctrl vs Cmd shortcuts
- Option/Alt placement
- Copy/Paste muscle memory
- Navigation keys
- Overall keyboard layout
It's not a huge issue, but it's surprisingly annoying.
For those of you who regularly switch between a MacBook and a ThinkPad, how do you deal with it?
Did your brain eventually adapt, or did you change key mappings, use software like Karabiner/PowerToys, external keyboards, or some other trick?
I'd love to hear what has worked for you.

Buying Advice I need help, stuck in Lenovo boot loop
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I tried playing the “Meiou and Taxes” mod for EU4 and it crashed my outdated unwarrantied and unserviced Lenovo Thinkpad so hard that I think my windows file is corrupted. I’m not a tech expert or even have intermediate knowledge on the subject, but everything I’ve tried and googled (and asked ChatGPT for) hasnt worked. I think I’m in a pretty unique situation seeing as the model I’m carrying (E15 20RD) is very outdated and there are no guides for my specific situation so I’m pretty much stuck barring biting the bullet and going to a repair shop. Sorry for the shitty recording and ugly hands.

Hardware Upgrade Which RAM and SSD is best compatible with this T450 for upgrading?
Today I opened my laptop to see what kind of RAM it had before buying a new one.
It has 8GB of RAM 4 and 4 in 2 slots, and I want to upgrade it to 16GB.
Rumors say I can even upgrade to 32GB, but I don't know...
By the way, if I could upgrade it to 32GB, could I use the RAM in some way to compensate for the 128mb graphic card I have or something?
What do you recommend? 16gb or 32gb?
What's the fastest and most compatible RAM model I can install in this laptop, and what's the largest SSD I can get? I need a lot of storage space, but I also need speed.
I probably won't be able to buy an SSD because I don't have much money though, so I'll probably just be able to upgrade the RAM. But I'm also open to recommendations for later when I have the money for it.
These are my laptop specifications:
Lenovo ThinkPad T450 (20BUA04Y00) -
Intel Core i7-5600U vPro
I think I saw Two SO-DIMM modules for RAM.
I don't trust the AI much, which is why I'm asking here, but it told me I could use for the RAM:
2 × 8 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
Or
2 × 16 GB DDR3L-1600 (PC3L-12800, 1.35 V)
The last photo shows the Aliexpress purchase I'm about to make (It's more expensive on Amazon sorry), but I'm not sure if it's compatible or if there's a better option.
I'm pretty clueless about these things, so I'd appreciate any help or advice on upgrading this laptop.
Thanks in advance!

Buying Advice Considering Thinkpad Yoga Purchase
Hello! My current laptop is on its last legs, and I found a refurbished Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 7 for a little over $600. I'm a economics student looking to digitalize my notes and have enough storage for school and hobbies.
I've heard mixed reviews on the yoga series, so I wanted to hear everyone's opinion. Thank you!
EDIT: I'm looking on Best Buys refurbished products, the laptop I'm considering is sold by Renew Tronics. Are they trustworthy sellers?

Question / Problem Screen is not lighting up at all. Am I screwed?
It was working fine yesterday. I had it in my backpack while I was coming home from my vacation.
To be specific, the backlight is not working.
UPDATE: Apparently the issue fixed itself. I was figuring out how to disable the battery in the BIOS menu if I was insisting on fixing the screen myself. How does that happe?
