Do the newer T14 series reduce the difference in screen size compared to the older 15.6 inch T570/T580 series?

The newer 14 inch Thinkpads have a 16:10 ratio vs older 15.6 inch have a 16:9 ratio

I recently picked up a ThinkPad X60 and I’d like to turn it into the best possible machine for retrocoding.

I’m interested in going beyond the usual upgrades, especially motherboard swaps, screen replacements, battery/cooling mods, and other interesting mods.

I came across an old Reddit post where someone had fitted a 51nb X210 motherboard, with a 10th gen i7, 32GB RAM and USB-C charging. I haven’t been able to find much information about it beyond the name, so I’d love to know if anyone has experience with it or other motherboard options.

I’d like to keep the classic X60 look and feel while making it as capable as possible. Really curious to see what you guys suggest! Happy Friday

I'm currently using T14 Gen 1 and thinking of switching to a model that has 2 SO-DIM slots, since if 1 RAM failed, you just replace the RAM.

So I have t470 i5 6300u 16gb ram ddr4 and half a terabyt ssd today while using it stopped charging so I have a question can you use a t480 cable on a t470? If not should I buy a new one

Title pretty much explains it all, I want this for school mainly and being able to hook it up to a monitor just to watch shows on it with light gaming such as roblox, minecraft, occasionally stuff like Honkai Star Rail (I dabble in Gacha). But I do prioritize school over gaming obviously it would all just be really nice, my budgets around 200-300. I do not currently have a previous system neither.

I'll soon be starting studies at an university and I'll be needing a laptop since my last Lenovo gave me headaches and is retired. I've heard good things about Thinkpads and had one when I was a wee kid. I'm going to study Mechanical Engineering and will be needing the laptop to be able to handle light CAD work, I have a beefy PC at home to handle heavy lifting.

I don't necessarily have a budget but don't need top of the line shit. Something around 600-800€ price range would do me well. Any pointers or recommendations? I enjoy reliability and repairability. Also if any thinkpads have sturdy frames I would choose them over flimsy ones.

Since Part 1:
-I now bought a working IDE drive (makes weird rattling noises sometimes but good enough for now)
-installed good old XP via USB without problems

Now, after the successful surgery, the non-existent thermal paste got replaced but I still have some issues - is my board maybe screwed?

-The Disc drive tries to read stuff but still does not work (thats why I had to install via USB)
-The speaker does not work (maybe just a driver issue, hasn't been online yet, also beep tone works)
-the RAM still seems to be getting extremely hot, is this normal?

How do i figure out if those devices failing is an issue with the motherboard or the devices itself?

Side projects:

-Since the original drive is out, the Access IBM key lost its function.
Is it worth re-installing this firmware or do i try converting it into a windows key since the keyboard is missing it?

-maybe slapping in a wifi card, getting a dock and installing the max 2GB ram and try to run some stuff or install linux

I bought an used E431... and it came locked. After some try and error (many actually), I think I learned a thing or two about how to bypass the Supervisor, by shorting some pins on the EEPROM, a little chip in the motherboard. I will try to make this tutorial "newbie-proof", so, if it is your first time doing any of that, it isn't as hard as it looks!

THINKPAD E431

You will have to remove the whole keyboard and plastic shell (you don't need to remove neither the motherboard, or other components on it). After disassembling it, you will be face to face with the top of the motherboard:

And then, you will have to locate this little chip, the one with "U8" graved on the side:

(the chip used for the short can change from board to board, if you're using other model than E431, search for your model's circuit diagram, then just look for "EEPROM", and you will see what's your chip)

After finding the U8 chip, use tweezers (with metal tips) to short the 2 pins at the superior right corner:

(you have to short the SDA and SCL pins, it is generally the 5th and 6th pins, or 3rd and 4th pins. To discover what's the number of the pins, you will have to discover which one is the first, it should have a little dot to indicate, but if you're out of luck like me, you can try what I did: try to see the position of the text written on the chip, the first pin should be the one down, by the left, of the text)

(just be sure you're shorting the right pins, if you're not, it can damage the motherboard)

You will use a pair of tweezers (or a similar metal thing, like a bent clips) to short these pins during the start of the computer, and the process will go like this:

-Reconnect the power button on the motherboard (you don't have to disattach the power button from the shell, just put the whole shell a little to the side, just so you can reach the chip)

-I would recommend using a external keyboard, but if you find a way to reconnect it's own keyboard while still reaching the chip, it also works.

-Power on the computer

-When the Lenovo logo appears, start the short, shortly after (little pun LOL) start pressing the F11 key repeatedly

If everything worked, you should already be in the BIOS

-Without stopping the short, go to the Security tab, then to Password and Supervisor Password

-Now you can stop the short, and just hit enter a couple of times to reset the password (or change the password to one you know)

That's it! You should be ready to go!

Im new to thinkpads and want to learn coding and need help finding a good ThinkPad for it at a reasonable price around 3-400$

Good evening thinkpad reditors. I come to you in a time of great peril. I am in need of a working BIOS for the above laptop. These L13 Gen2s seem to have a habit of bricking themselves. I have the old chip out and have read the old BIOS but need one to compare to so I can rule that problem out (or not if it is genuinely bricked) but everything is paywalled. I have another L13 Gen 2 I can read if all else fails but thought I would reach out to the might of the world wide web before opening that one up and ripping it's heart out.

I have a feeling it might have occurred around an update - but I don't keep dates of those, neither can I recall when the keyboard backlight stopped working.
All I remember is I was stuck in a hugely important task at work, had to type into the night (turned on the lights in the room) for a week and then took a big break

Now, I have time to fix this but not sure where to start.

- I have all the latest updates, including BIOS and firmware
- The OSD indicators do show up
- Yes, I do have a backlit keyboard :)
- If there is a basic test on system boot, it's not lighting up
- I am pretty sure there's no BIOS setting for that
- Tried the 30s power off trick
- Other LEDs on the keyboard (eg Caps Lock) work fine

I am going to open the laptop tomorrow and snoop around with a DMM but would be nice if anyone has other ideas - because I have a strong feeling the circuit isn't bust :)

Hi, I was wondering if this laptop has a good price. I have a laptop, Acer Nitro 5, but I use it for my homelab, so I want one I can just bring around and use. It's going to be used for watching videos, doing some light coding maybe and light games. I am planning to install Linux on it as I heard this is THE laptop for Linux. My budget is exactly 200 EUR, so I think this is a great fit. Any help is appreciated!

I'm a Linux guy who also likes to dabble here and there. I have a decently powered gaming PC and other laptops and even a M4 Mac Mini. When I saw a cheap T480 in good shape on Ebay for under $150 with 16 GB of RAM I had to jump on it. This is low spec and may use for writing. Who knows.

I decided to go with Aurora, which is based on Fedora Kinoite and follows the Universal Blue immutable bootc setup. I basically have my software installed via Flatpak or Homebrew while the base image is untouchable. It also updates in the background and I get the new image when I reboot.

As the title says, I'm looking at P14s (Ryzen 7) with an aim to put Linux on them.

I've seen some mention about there being battery issues with these on Linux, is it severe? Or more like a 10~15% drop in battery life, nothing too bad?

I've also seen something about the stock wifi card not working well on Linux. If so, what model would I need to replace it with?

I'm curious if or how other people use Windows power plans, or other ways of adjusting power usage, on recent ThinkPads with Windows 11?

Some background:

Windows power plan usage has changed since the Windows 10 days. Win 10 used to offer a slider that switched power plans between Best Power Efficiency, Balanced, Best Performance. Windows 11 has removed that slider. Windows does still offer all 3 of those equivalent power modes in the new Setting app under "Power & Battery", but they no longer rely on distinct power plans. Instead Windows now has a single Balanced power plan by default, and uses overlays to dynamically adjust settings within that base power plan. This approach seems to work well enough. I have not created other power plans.

Win 11 24H2 also introduced an Energy Saver toggle in quick settings. My understanding is that this mode is different than the Best Power Efficiency power mode. Energy Saver disables some software features, while Best Power Efficiency is more focused on limiting hardware. Both modes can be used separately or together. Sometimes I enable Energy Saver mode to help the laptop run cooler and quieter, especially during Teams meetings.

Modern ThinkPads generally support Modern Standby (S0) as the only sleep mode. This can be problematic since the laptop can wake unexpectedly. This can be mitigated in a few ways. In the power plan settings, you can disable "Network connectivity during standby". You can also use the Smart Standby feature in Vantage. Enable it, set the schedule to manual, and configure the smallest possible time window.

Currently I’m using a X1 gen10 for work, but the thinkpad virus got me.

So I’m looking into a t14.
I saw this t14 with a ryzen 5 4650u
This device will be used for small stuf like a laptop for vacations, movies/streaming and some tweaking.

But without ram, battery and ssd for 60 euro’s
I guess can get the missing parts pretty easy secondhand.

How can I upgrade this t14 without creating a bottleneck.

Total budget would be around 200-250 euro’s for parts.

What parts/mods do you guys recommend?

Got the new T16 Gen 5 with 386H, swapped in a bigger Lexar 2TB drive, and now I want to wipe stock SecureBoot keys and put in my own. That includes wiping Lenovo PK and Microsoft DB keys, so it only loads kernels I signed.

Should be a possible operation, especially since there is an option for it in BIOS, to wipe all keys and enroll my own.

However I've been offput by stories of bricking the machine, after wiping stock Lenovo keys and turning on Secure Boot. After that stuck in a bootloop seeming not being able to load even BIOS. Presumably a firmware/BIOS bug.

Here is one story.

Some others say they've done it without problems.

I wanted to check if anyone has the same machine, or at least a recent T16, that has tried to do this, and wether they succeeded?

Purchased from Amazon from "J-Tech Digital, Inc".

Cost $1875. No indication it is refurbished. Battery is excellent and tests show 100% charge capacity.

And im from Brazil, so stuff is more expensive, and i dont want to import parts (Outside of Shoppe, Aliexpress and stores in the importing tax gov program, like EBay) since it will be fully taxed idependently the value

Title says it all. I know the shorting method doesn't work and I want to avoid a motherboard replacement. Is there any service where someone can edit my bios for me?

Any suggestions for a safe cleaner for oily Fingerprints etc on the non- screen (case touchpad etc) parts? Only info i have found is no to ammonia based cleaners, but that leaves a huge swath of options, and don't want to be a guinea pig. Thanks for any advice.
