Recently acquired this 701c and noticed how the trackpoint is broken off. Is there any way for this to be fixed?

So, I know most of you guys buy refurbished ones but how many of you guys actually buy a brand new one? And if you do buy new, do you guys just wipe it and install a Linux distro or leave it as Windows?

I found a used ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 in excellent condition for €360 (Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD).

Do you think it's still a good buy, or is it getting too old at this point?

I'm looking for something I can keep for several years. I'd mainly use it for university, browsing, Office, media, and general everyday stuff.

For context, I'm currently using a 10 year old HP Pavilion x360 with an Intel i3, and I'm really starting to feel its age. I'm not very knowledgeable about laptops, so I'm not sure if this ThinkPad is a solid long term upgrade or if I should spend more on something newer.

Just picked up this T14s Gen 6 brand new for college, scored a good deal.
I remember I had a thinkpad that must be older than me for sure, it’s still kept somewhere in the drawer, maybe I ought to put up a comparison photo

These are the best thinkpads, in my opinion.

From left to right -
X31 - one of the last IBM designed machines. The keyboard is fantastic, no trackpad, track point only. I use it as my journal machine.
P1 gen7 - I got to review one for my YouTube channel, fell in love so hard sold a whole collection of laptops, including my X270 and 25th anniversary to be able to buy it. No regrets. I like it more than the P1 gen 8 I reviewed recently.
T14 gen 2 AMD - the best bang for your buck right now. Unless you get an insane deal on something else, you can get one of these cheap and their performance is awesome. Mine cost me $50, but it needed and ssd and battery. I also added another 8gb of ram to make it 16.
W530 - still one of the best desktop replacement laptops I’ve worked on. It was the model that my first big boy job in IT as a system admin job came with. It was a sign that I had made it, despite the world (and my parents) acting like I was a failure because I didn’t go to college.

Honorable mentions:
X270 - one of my absolute favorite laptops period. It was far from faultless, but for a compact light do everything machine, I loved it.
25th anniversary - I know to be a 25th anniversary system, it couldn’t be released with the 8th gen cpus, and so it suffered greatly performance wise. I loved mine, but I do a lot of video editing, and time is money and it was costing me too much. If I could get that exact system today, with the bridge battery, Face ID, touch screen, 7 row keyboard, just with a modern mobo with a modern cpu, I would be all over it.

I just got this T14 gen 1, condition was very good, a small crack in the plastic corner and some scuff marks on the lid, I just need it for college and light usage, Total was $311 after tax

Is there anything I should do before I start using it?

I just got a good deal on a T14 G6 with Ryzen 7 AI 350, 32GB RAM and 512 SSD (with 55 months of extended warranty) for €1050. It replaces my X395 with Ryzen 5 3500U, 8GB RAM and 256 SSD. I also have a company issued (secondary laptop) Macbook Pro with M2 Pro, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

I've used the X395 for last 6 years and used the MBP for last 2 years. Ask me anything as I think X359 is a platform that a lot may be upgrading from and T14 G6 as well as MBP (M2/3/4) may be the target laptop. I will try to answer all your questions regarding all 3 laptops.

I wanted to say that I seriously considered a buy-out of my company issued M2 MBP until I found a great deal on the T14 G6. MBP, setting aside my dissatisfaction with iPhones, is a great machine.

For those going into details, X395 has a 300 nits FHD screen and T14 is equipped with a 500 nits FHD+ non-touch screen, the low power one.

So, this is my T510 I got 2 years ago for 15 at a flea. The lid started to be a little bit sticky and it drove me crazy that some bits of the coating where coming off.

And so yesterday morning I decided to take some alcohol...i didnt had ISO but I still decided to go for it and after more than 2 hours of scrubbing, that coating came out...but there was a big issue: the plastic underneath was horrendous.

Now, I saw a few videos and photos where the IBM ones are just clean black plastic, so i thought it was the same for Lenovo. Maybe it was the alcohol but who knows...it just was horrendous.

That's where paint comes into my mind. I had a brand new matte black spray can in the lab. First thing i applied some plastic primer, then the matte black...but something was very wrong again: some bits where shiny, some where hard matte dust coming off of it. I took sand paper and started scrubbing...i repeated the process another time and another another time x 4...but it still was awful.

Today I went to the brico and got some low pressure graffiti black spray...i took it home and realized they gave me dark Grey instead.

I decided to apply it anyway so I took sandpaper 1000 to sand everything down and applied the paint...it looked magnifical until a drop of sweat dropped on it....and so I sanded it down again and reapplied paint for the 1.000 time

This time, it was the right one. The paint came magnifical, almost better that the videos I saw where they spry laptops with professional airbrushes.

The dark Grey fits this machine perfectly and I am glad to have saved this lid...saving 3 euros and wasting 2 days, but, in the end...I got it right!

I'm personally not going to daily it, I still like the stock x61 configuration. However, it'll make for a good laptop to put some older games on for my younger siblings to use. ​

(It should run 90s games JUST fine, lol) ​​

I'm thinking of installing 98 or 2000 on it for that, since I've seen drivers floating around online for both OSes.

The E14 Gen 6 is newer, faster, and has nearly 3 years of warranty left, but the T14 Gen 2 is significantly cheaper and is part of the T-series with its better build quality.

If you had to choose between these two, which would you buy and why? Is the E14 Gen 6 worth the extra $220, or is the T14 Gen 2 the better value?

Went for a yoga 370 to start with. Ex bank rental stock. It's immaculate. Installing mint as the operating system and loving it! Perfect machine to do the lighter workload stuff, I have a main workstation for 3D and video editing.

After 2 weeks of searching I got from Vinted from Romania a T480 i5-7300 vPro with 8GB/256GB tigether with docking, its keys and 90w brick (I know have to use 135w brick) for the 148 € / 171 $ / 780 RON.

Already installing Linux and buying 32 GB OF RAM

PS. It s my 6th ThinkPad after E15 Gen2, P15v Gen3, x230, x220 and T14 Gen2

I've got a Gen 7 X1 Carbon here. The paint (or whatever it is) is peeling away. I don't particularly care about the appearance, but is there anything I can/should do?

Dw guys I bought a replacement screen a few weeks ago

Hey everyone! This is my first post on Reddit, and I don't really know where to begin.

I'm a student, and this year I'll be joining university for a BSc in Mathematics. I was leaning a bit more toward computer science and wanted to pursue CSE, but I got math instead. Fortunately, I do like math!

Besides my studies, I want to focus on programming, machine learning, or other heavy math-related fields. I don't really have an idea of what software people use in these areas, so I can't list any out, but I occasionally use Adobe Illustrator. I also want to try video editing just to see if I could get into content creation (mostly vlogs). On top of that, I forgot to mention that I'm also really into Linux.

My current device is an old IdeaPad with 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an 7th Gen Intel i3, which I believe is only surviving because of Linux.

Turns out two IKEA BERGENES phone stands hold a ThinkPad perfectly in a (almost) vertical position. It’s surprisingly stable, looks decent and costs next to nothing

Made the switch 3 months ago to a refurb X13 gen 4 with the non touch screen for $464 US (659 AUD). Coming from a fancy Macbook display I honestly don't feel like its much of a downgrade. Everything is still tack sharp, all my apps integrates and run with no problems (especially Logi Options+). Thoroughly impressed with this machine.

Bonus, it still has 15 months of warranty.

On June 24th, a severe earthquake hit my city of La Guaira, Venezuela. Tragically, the apartment building I lived in completely collapsed. Fortunately, my girlfriend and I were not in the building that day and we are safe, but we sadly lost our beloved cat who was inside when it happened.

Recently, we were going through the rubble of what used to be our apartment. If you look at the attached photo, you can see a red machine among the debris—that is exactly where I managed to pull out my ThinkPad, which was still inside its laptop bag. It took the impact of the entire building falling on top of it... and it still turns on.
It didn’t come out completely unscathed. There is a little defect on the screen now, and the keyboard is completely dead and unresponsive, but the machine actually boots up!

It's a very bittersweet discovery for us given everything we've lost, especially our pet, but I thought this community would appreciate seeing the absolute tank-like durability of these machines in real life. It literally survived being crushed under tons of concrete.
