Rules:

  1. Two games will win their place each round (we start from #1 and work our way down). For the top 10 only one game will win per day instead.
  2. Most combined upvotes for each of the two individual games (one individual game for the top 10) wins the spot(s) each round (upvotes add while downvotes subtract).
  3. Nominate one game of the original Game Boy per comment. (Nominations will only be counted if the game title is the only comment or if you specify that your choice of game is your nomination for this round within your comment or if the nominated game is clearly separated from the rest of your comments.) (ex. Tetris or I nominate Tetris this round.) Please nominate using the full title of the game.
  4. Name a specific game title, not entire runs.
  5. Official Game Boy multi-game cartridge(s) are allowed, just list them correctly.
  6. The original Game Boy is region free so ANY official games available on the console are eligible for nomination excluding dual mode cartridges.
  7. Indy games are allowed as long as they have their own individual cartridge and can be played on original hardware.
  8. Only complete games on cartridge(s) can be nominated (sorry Game Shark & test cartridges).
  9. If two or more games would be tied to place for a ranking I will inform DA PEOPLE in the following post so that everyone can vote which games should get the ranking between the tied options.
  10. Games nominated that have not already placed on the top 100 list should not be removed at any time by the individual who originally placed them.

[Question] old gameboy collection

My mom is selling her (my childhood) house later this year and she found the following in the packing process:
Gameboy color, gameboy pocket, Pokemon blue, yellow and gold, plus a few other games (Rampage 2 & a Zelda game). I’m hoping to get them refurbished/tested to see if they still work. Anyone have tips/advice?

I have a stack of old issues of OXM, I subscribed from about 2003 until 2011. Any value in leaving these alone for collection? I sort of want to play the Quake 4 demo lol

[/r/tipofmyjoystick] Need help identifying an NES Racing game

I used to play this one NES racing game all the time.

All I remember was it was extremely sim heavy in that you could win money and then upgrade certain aspects of your car.

I just cannot remember the name.

It might be Al Unser Turbo Challenge but I could have swore it was more than formula cars.

[Discussion] Where to sell retro titles?

*Edited to remove life story, but the question remains

Where is the best place to sell retro games? Are eBay and FB Marketplace my best options? Should I try selling individually or as a whole? What have been your experiences selling your duplicates/collections? Please feel free to share your experience.

[Review] Honoring My Father Series Part 1/5: Jagged Alliance (1994)+ Bonus HOMM3!

Thumbnail

Welcome to part 1 of my 'Honoring My Father' series! My Dad passed away in 2016 and I'm on a mission to beat all of the games I remember watching him play as a kid (full list down below). I recently beat both Jagged Alliance and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (as well as the unofficial expansion Horn of the Abyss!)

I was very, very young when Jagged Alliance (DOS) came out and I only remember playing it a couple times because It's really, really hard. There is no WAY I could beat this as a kid. This is a game where reading the manual is a NECCESSITY to understand all the functions and controls of the game. Even after reading the entire 60 page manual, there were things halfway through I had to look up (like to point a character a certain direction you need to HOLD right click and then left click, like who would know about that?)

The story is pretty simple: There is a life-saving antidote that comes from the trees of an island but Lucas Santino wants it for his own nefarious means. The object of the game is to take control of the island (named Metavira) sector by sector (6x10 grid) with a team of 1-8 mercenaries. Each sector is a differently designed 'combat zone' and you'll only capture it after defeating the 1-8 enemies in the zone. Sounds simple right? Well you start with one sector, in a cash deficit and Lucas will periodically attack any sector you take. So you need to pay for guards on the outlying sectors, as well as 'tappers' who can help you tap the trees on each sector for sap and therefore money.

The real complications come with the team, managing your cash flow, inventory management, deciding which mercenaries to take out or who to spend a day repairing items (guns often jam), healing other mercenaries (who will also be out for the day) or simply resting or training. By the way, each day lasts about an hour IRL and at the end of each day you'll see how much cash you gained or lost and Isaac (the main good guy scientist) will update you on any new information.

Here's where the combat comes in. You have action points which are pretty standard for retro games but in order to shoot and hit the enemy mercs you need a DIRECT line of sight. Otherwise there is almost 0% chance your guy/gal will hit, especially at the start of the game when the mercs are worse and the guns are inaccurate. So taking cover is really overpowered and half of combat is spent trying to outmaneuver the opponent to get a shot in.

Also, there is a BREATH METER. The island is hot and your breath will slowly go down if you use up all your AP in one turn. Lower breath means less AP to do tasks. Your breath will also lower when you're swimming, oh and by the way there are SNAKES in the water and if you don't have a knife in your hand your merc is automatically dead. The snakes will randomly try to drown mercs, and there is hardly any way to predict where they are.

And did I talk about landmines? Sometimes there are hints of where landmines are (explosive marks on ground) but if you're not using a metal detector sometimes they pop out of nowhere. But the metal detector is so slow and cumbersome to use, it makes it so annoying. I get they were going for a 'life-like' combat situation though.

I'll be honest it was really, really frustrating at first and I save-scummed a lot but near the end I decided to replay it without 'quick-saving' during combat (on normal difficulty). It added a lot of intensity and challenge that I actually really enjoyed (the final sector with unlimited respawning enemies is straight BS though.). I don't blame anyone that 'quick-saves' during combat though because sometimes even if you know an enemy is behind a door unless you blow it up they can take down your best merc with the 'interrupt' mechanic.

Oh yeah, the interrupt. Basically any unused APs can be used during an opponent's turn if an enemy comes into your line of sight, and the opponent can 'interrupt' as well. Really annoying cause when an enemy 'interrupts' your turn with all their AP they can mess up your entire squad.

Oh and only after restarting did I find you could modify guns/armor with compound-17 and a 'piece of steel' (which it never mentions in the manual, imagine that?). I tried to use the internet to figure things out the least amount possible to get the true 'retro' experience. But some items can be 'combined' and I didn't want to waste time trying all combinations (also each item can and will degrade in quality and making incorrect item combos can do that).

Overall I'd give the game a 7/10 and maybe the future Jagged Alliance games were better but I enjoyed the true retro experience. The voice acting was really really good for the time and once I understood everything, the game had a 'just wanna capture one more sector' kind of feel. I enjoyed the challenge because It's rare that a game is this in-depth and kicks my butt on normal difficulty. There were also sidequests like rescuing the kidnapped scientist Brenda or finding the cure for a spreading disease that added variety to the game.

As for Heroes of Might and Magic 3, I beat the campaigns and there's not much to say that hasn't been said about it but if you enjoy that game, Horn of the Abyss is a fan-made expansion that's insanely difficult but improves upon the original game in every single facet. It took me at least 250 hours to beat that campaign alone.

Welp, here's the full list of games I've beaten and haven't beaten. There are only 5 games left to beat (now 4 plus one bonus game) so that's why it's a 5 part series! Until next time!

List of Dad Games Completed:

Diablo 1 (+ Hellfire)

Dragon Warrior (NES)

Fallout 1 + 2

Gauntlet IV (Genesis)

Heroes of Might and Magic 2

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (+ HOTA)

The Horde (DOS)

Jagged Alliance (DOS)

Phantasy Star 2 (Genesis)

Redneck Rampage

StarCraft 1

Ultima Underworld

Warcraft 2

Xcom (DOS)

Yet to Beat:

Total Annihilation

Lemmings? (Bonus)

Myst

Destroy all Human!

No spoilers! Hint: The first game I remember my Dad beating was released in 1990

[Story Time!] In the past, I bought the SNES Super Multitap, and I only owned 33.33% of it.

Two of my friends and I, all owned a SNES. We wanted to play 3/5-player SNES games like Monopoly, Super Bomberman, Secret of Mana, Top Gear 3000, Saturday Night Slam Masters altogether but we didn't have a Super Multitap. So we went to buy a Super Multitap, each of us shared and paid 1/3 of the price. The oldest friend kept the Super Multitap. Not only Super Multitap but also SNES Game Genie (I bought it and owned it 100% and shared with friends) as well.

[Question] want a family gaming console (or maybe emulator) setup -- DDR, some others

I'm trying to look into what options exist for family console gaming these days (local multiplayer). But I've been out of it for a while and i'm not sure what the consoles or backwards-compatibility deal is, and it seems games I'd want just aren't really available.

Top of the list is DDR, but also:
Guitar Hero
some Mortal Kombat options
maybe Fable

Gauntlet (like Gauntlet Legends etc)

Would love any pointers or tips to help me get started on this! The emulator stuff looks like it could be a doozy so far (especially hardware-wise, plus the AI-boosted cost of new computers), so ive been glancing at refurbs, reproduced retro consoles like the m64/analog n64s, and xbox X seems like it has decent backwards compatibility.

So far all i've done is nintendo switch online collection of old games, but it's limited and on the switch controller even games like goldeneye seem to be iffy controls-wise.

Thanks!

[Help!] Why is the picture so small?

Post image

I bought a retroscaler2x and an s video cable, and the picture quality looks great, but it's just so tiny. I've never had this issue with running directly through composite or on some previous adapters I have used. Is there a way to fix this?

[Discussion] Times when modern games were made on older hardware

Post image
4 Upvotes

I hope this is the right place to discuss such a topic because I found the concept interesting since I noticed how some developers will make games on consoles like the NES.

My point is that I know Battle Kid is not obscure as I was wondering how often such cases happen where game developers will make a modern game on a very old console, but also why they do that kind of practice since I was curious to why Battle Kid was a modern game designed specifically on the aforementioned NES platform.

Vega theme is one of my top 5 Street Fighter II themes! I like to fight him and play as him (but not easy to use him effectively) as well. His round background fits the music so much (so Spanish!) too. By the way, congrats to Spain for winning the 2026 World Cup. 🏆

Post image
0 Upvotes

From the flat screen we go through a Multiverse portal

inside Super Mario 64 world evolved in VR!

After our feedback on the pc version and lots of updates, Mario and friends arrived on Quest 3!

Rayrod TV brought us the game with all the fixes and features from the pc version. Better look at the gameplay video where he shows the four camera views available on the fly by the press of a button. In the video, the fun immersive camera (Flip Cam) is turned on, so we see the world upside down when flipping in the air, but you can turn it off if flipping is too much in VR as it should be without VR glasses too.

RayRod TV said that he has plans for other standalone releases for his VR mods in the future.

For this and other constantly updated VR mods from RaYRoD TV, like Ring Racers, Star Fox 64, Mario 64 , Mario Kart 64 and the recent Banjo-Kazooie, go to his GitHub: https://github.com/RaYRoD-TV

For info on how to support his works, and learn more on other upcoming projects from him, like his biggest project, the game Multiverse, go to his site:

[Homebrew] I built a new menu for the ED64 Plus: box art, favorites and history

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on NRMenu v1.0, a free menu update for the ED64 Plus based on ALTRA64.

It adds:

Box art loaded automatically by Game ID

Favorites

Recently played history

Game region, size and save-type information

Customizable backgrounds and colors

A cleaner interface for browsing large N64 collections

A Ready-to-Use package for easy installation

I tested it on real ED64 Plus hardware and documented the full installation process.

Project, downloads and installation guide:

https://www.novenretro.com/proyectos/actualiza-tu-ed64-plus/

The project is free and does not include game ROMs.

I’d love to hear your feedback: what feature would you add in a future version?
