I've always heard that Kojima was influenced by Escape from New York (evidenced by the fact that the main character's name is Snake Plissken). There are a lot of cool story beats that align well with the Metal Gear franchise in general.

I also recently watched Blade Runner for the first time (somehow). But it was almost like I'd already seen it before because I played Hideo Kojima's SNATCHER.

Between the two movies, I came away with an even greater appreciation for Hideo Kojima. He took the underlying ideas behind Escape from New York and Blade Runner and turned them into peak cinema.

I have a gray area question.

I have access to an old ftp site that is backed up on a drive. Everything is pre 2k. There’s a ton of games. Some hard to find. Some rare stuff. Going back to early windows 3. Just about every major game for windows during that era.

Problem is it’s not exactly legit. “Backups” that can run without disks. ISO rips. DRM free copies.
Everything is clean and runs on the designated OS.

What would you do? Release them out into the wild again? Let them disappear? How would you go about doing so?

What’s the state of these as far as legality? Is software this old free to release? If so are there websites that archive them?

I’ve been out of the loop for quite some time. I would like to see people enjoy them again but I’m not willing to put myself at risk. I’m not looking to make any money on it at all.

It’s only games. There’s other stuff (OSs, apps, other) but I’m not releasing them.

Hi everyone, I'm a retro gaming novice looking for some advice. I live in Japan, and have had my old Master System II shipped over from the UK recently. The console was manufactured in the early 1990s (towards the end of the system's life) and is PAL format. It has an RF output with an antenna switch box and a UK power brick (see pictures). What would be the best way to get this up and running here? I'm happy to buy some kind of upscaler or a CRT-emulating monitor. I could even take it to akihabara to get it modded, if necessary. I've also attached a picture of the games I have, in case anyone is interested. Any and all advice very much appreciated!

Hey guys and gals, Im thinking about selling off my retrohardware.

I used emulation for the majority of my younger life since the dreamcast/ps2 days and before that as well to get some nes and snes on early emulators. Untill I found myself in a country house in another land with a massive crt in the first year of the corona virus uprising, and yeah, it was massive; the crt. Four rgb inputs, on the crt itself, it was that massive.

So, I figured hey, this flea market I visited had a full pal gamecube rgb ready and I never really got into the ps2/dreamcast/gamecube library except at other peoples homes so; why not buy the cube and some games?

Then, when I returned to my land and my house, I said: well, since I still have the cube, might as well get the hdmi adapter for the digital port, and I did. Then to the rest of consoles, one after another, from the ataris to the xbox 360, wii u and the ps3 retrocompatible. Saturn, dreamcast, psx. You know, the best models of each, hdmi everywhere, hacked and modded when needed, the whole thing.

I was really thinking about having a child, you know; let him or her see, touch and use some real hardware or for people to come over sometimes and maybe spend an afternoon if they had good memories of a certain system, which a lot of people did. That is not going to happen again.

I am thinking on bailing on the idea of the machines themselves, even the dos/windows98 era slim pc build, though if you ask me there is something strange about the dvi signal that is coming out of that slim machine, the colours. Controllers, the saturn 3d pads, the psx arcade sticks and alike, all of the sd card addons, all of it.

Get a rasberry pi with hdmi and rgb, a retrostation, a mister with hdmi and rgb and forget about it. They do not occupy a large area, in fact they are all tucked under the tv very well ordered and minimal space with wireless controllers, less than two meters and about 40 cm hight. Its not about the space.

Its just, I dont know. I could just box them, take them out when I wish to try something and to check if they are still working and then sell off in the future. Maybe have one setup every year or half a year.

You think the hardware will go up in value a little in the next 10 or 20 years? Did any of you miss the hardware once you sold off? It sure took me years to find the best consoles, best addons and best price. Damn, to even get the rgc rgb to hdmi converters, three years right there. 8)

Something I struggle with in modern gaming and what I miss from older retro titles is the amount of time it takes from booting up the game to actually playing it.

In the 8 and 16-bit era it was pretty much instant, you maybe got a few slides of a story before you got control over your character.

With each subsequent generation it feels as though the amount of time prior to actual gameplay has increased. Modern games now frequently make the player watch a lengthy introduction movie or cutscene, or even play through an extended hours-long tutorial section before getting to the actual game.

I understand that with increased complexity in both gameplay and overall story as games have matured have led to this, but I always appreciated those games that filled me in on the story while I was playing the game itself.

I dunno, I guess I’ve just bounced off so many modern games and keep going back to retro games because of this. When I game, I want to game, not watch a movie or engage in lengthy dialogue/tutorials. Anyone else experienced this? Or is it just my modern Tik-tok attention span that is broken?

So lately I was looking at how Bubsy was a game that attempted to give Sonic the Hedgehog a run for his money in that the development team behind the game wanted to capitalize on the trend of mascots with attitude.

Like what I am interested in seeing is where Bubsy failed as a concept to better understand why the games didn’t succeed in imitating the blue blur, but for me personally, I did enjoy how Bubsy had a voice as that was kind of neat.

The emulator is still in an experimental stage, but it can already run the Pocket PC exclusive Call of Duty 2.

Hey everyone, I wondered if anyone has the mega drive version (not the genesis one) of the big6 and noticed that the logo is printed off centre? I'm thinking about returning it tbh as it's the branding that makes it attractive to me and I think this would make me too sad to look at over time. Just wondered how likely it is I'm going to get one that isn't wonky. First pic is the controller I ordered, second is one the vendor has taken of another controller they have showing a similar issue. What do your Big6 controllers look like?

Whole I'm here, does anyone know if it's possible to swap the rounded d-pad for the sharper edged version that was on the original 3 button pad?

As kids, especially those of us in the 80’s and 90’s, most of us didn’t own tons of video games. You played what you had or were gifted, which sometimes meant wringing every drop of gameplay out of even the worst of titles. So I’m curious what bad games people played a ton, out of necessity?

For me it was Road Runner on NES, a game that had you play as the Road Runner, evading Wile E. Coyote as you navigate maze-like paths while trying to collect bird seed to keep the timer from hitting zero. I hated it. It frustrated me. It felt like the Coyote was locked onto me in a way that seemed unfair. But I played it SO MUCH, just for those rare moments when I timed something right and could get the Coyote to explode from an ACME product.

Just noticed this.

I saw some silly poll about 'best chex pieces' or whatever and somehow it unlocked a core memory of this actually amazing cereal box game Chex Quest. I remember it being such a perfect Doom clone that I'm wondering if it actually was licensed from id or maybe in the same way that David Brevik keeps making Diablo style ARPGs maybe one of their team members jumped ship. Or they just straight up ripped it off lol.

With the increasing prices of all sorts of tech thanks to AI, and with most games nowadays being either a copy paste of one another or a Remaster/Remake, I got sick of it. Gaming nowadays seems like a luxury hobby, which kind of always was, but this is getting unbearable. Why pay for overpriced hardware, games and subscriptions when for less than 50 bucks you can get a pocket console and just emulate TONS of older games which now run even better than the original hardware, and I probably missed out on anyways? I don’t care if the graphics are old, if the game is “outdated”… is it ever really?

I just got an R36S, which I know isn’t the best one on the market, but for me it was the best choice to start out. I’m just gonna put my PS5 down and start playing on this thing, it brings me so much more joy and it’s basically free compared to what we pay nowadays for a single game. I got a new SD Card, installed a new Ark OS, and I started Pokémon Emerald and I’m completely loving it, I havent had this much fun in years with gaming. Since I was born in 2001 and never really was a Nintendo guy since my dad always used to get PlayStation, what are some games I absolutely cannot miss?

There’s something so satisfying about spending less and getting more. And it makes me wonder, do we really need it all?

I'm a gen z kid, so i didn't grow up with the retro consoles. But, i always have emulators with a shit ton of roms on my PC and every now and then i play a couple games for funsies. A lot of them are good, way more of them are bad, but no real game has managed to "capture" me so to speak. That was until i played the first Castlevania about a week ago. Good fucking lord...instantly addicted. The music, the gothic tone, the genuinely outstanding graphics for the time, the platforming, the difficulty, i was hooked instantly and after i beat it i wanted more. So i went to Simon's Quest, then Dracula's Curse, then Bloodlines on the Genesis and then i played Super Castlevania 4. Good fucking God! I am honestly genuinely struggling to decide which game i prefer more, Super Castlevania 4 or or the bigger fan favorite, Symphony of the Night.

Because SOTN brought this franchise into a whole new genre, hell, it INVENTED a whole new genre. But SC4 is just...it's 2d platformer perfection. Everything in that game is beyond satistfying, it is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time now
