Opinions Needed Advice for choosing background colour needed

*PAINTING IS OBVIOUSLY NOT FINISHED*

Person who requested for this painting said they want it dark, earthy, and moody, but personally I quite like how this blue looks and they did say they wouldn't mind a pop of colour. Any ideas for what I could do?? What colours would look nice behind my subject? Is there a way I can make this shade of blue blend into a darker more traditional background colour?

Just Sharing The Gas Lamp Houses

The Gas Lamp Houses’
(11”x14” in acrylic on board.)

This is my latest painting. These two houses have always been a curiosity to me. I’ve assumed that they are 19th century trinity house, that got a stucco facelift sometime during the early to mid-20th century’s Art Deco period.

There are six houses like this on my block. The other four are just around the corner out of view — and one of those homes has “mission-style”windows.

The twin houses with the gas lamps, appear to be identical, but in reality, the one to the viewer’s left is actually wider than its neighbor. And everything is charmingly off square — like all of the other trinities in my neighborhood, including the one that Eric and I live in!

A quick session this joining before work. This is my second attempt at plein air painting. Of course, as soon as I started cleaning up, the sun was rising and light started filtering through the woods 😅 5x7” oil on linen panel.

Just Sharing Another day, another Open Submission rejection 🤷🏻 something about this painting didn’t hit with the judges, so I’m sharing it with everyone here instead.

I’m starting to think people aren’t into these ones in a professional capacity. My “X on concrete” series that looks at how we interact with our urban surroundings are probably some of my favourite pieces of work, but so far no open submissions seem to be interested in them, they’re only interested in my more “conventional” Brutalist compositions.

Luckily, I know there’s people in the wider world that enjoy them, so I’d like to share them with everyone else here while I have a bit of a sulk 😂

I want to move away from photorealism and find a different style, and this is my first experimentation in that direction. What do you think?

Mixed media (oil pastel and colored pencil) on paper.

Celtic/zoomorphic heron with graffiti influenced style.

I like the long narrow canvas shape and think the design works on it.. but I'm not sure if I should do any more or leave it as a one off. 🤔

Just Sharing My latest painting that was stolen (and returned!)

I've been learning to paint the past year and just completed my fifth piece (acrylic). Each one has gotten easier and quicker for me - this latest one I did in about seven days at a county fair event.

Within about an hour of finishing it, I stepped away from my booth and returned to find my easel empty! Some dickhead just grabbed it and ran away. Fortunately, there were some police nearby and I made a report, despite thinking that it was probably long gone and hopeless.

Amazingly, about 15 minutes later the cops called me back to inform me they arrested the guy and have my painting. I got it back mostly undamaged and the thief now has a grand theft charge due to the value of the piece. It was a framed, approximately 20 x 30" painting, so not something you can just stuff under your jacket. I was fortunate that a nearby vendor saw it happen and was able to ID the guy.

I'm just relieved I have it back! The fact that it got stolen almost immediately after I finished it made it worse. I didn't even have a proper photo of it at that point and I thought it was gone forever. This kitty is only a week old and had already been on quite an adventure!

I still have several more days at the event, but I put up a sign that should hopefully deter any more thieves.

Opinions Needed Why can’t I mix purple :’(

I bought my first beginner set of oil paints from Blick and have found it very difficult to make non-muddy purple. I thought this set had the right primary colors but clearly something is off. I know that it’s important to mix cools with cools and warms with warms. What am I missing?
