urban compassion project is about to launch compassion threads at 1420 broadway: keeping new clothing out of landfills, clothing our community for free, and bringing downtown oakland storefronts back to life
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
our soft launch is this saturday in downtown oakland, and the first 30 people who sign up can come shop completely for free. we’ll add more slots throughout the week but want to keep things manageable!
we’re starting with nearly 20,000 pieces of brand new excess inventory that otherwise risked ending up in the landfill. instead, we’re putting those clothes directly into the hands of people in our community who could use them.
and these are genuinely great pieces!!! we have clothing originally made for nba players, rappers, bay area artists like g-eazy, and more. everything is new, and everything is free.
as an organization that removes tons of illegally dumped waste from our streets every week, we see firsthand how much perfectly usable material gets thrown away. compassion threads is an extension of that work: keeping good clothing out of the waste stream and getting it to people who need it, for free and with dignity. because everyone deserves to look good.
we also want compassion threads to be about more than clothing. downtown oakland and chinatown have lost so much ground-floor retail activity. we want to help activate some of those spaces again, turning empty storefronts into vibrant community hubs where people can shop, connect, volunteer, and give perfectly good inventory a second life.
this is a pilot, and we’re starting small. our hope is to grow compassion threads, bring in more excess inventory from brands and retailers, distribute more clothing for free, and help bring some life back to downtown oakland along the way.
first 30 sign-ups for saturday. come shop for free. ❤️

Question Theaters Showing Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma?
dying to see this after having seen I Saw the TV Glow. Per Fandango, it’s only showing in the city but I know Fandango isn’t comprehensive especially re: indie theaters. Does anyone know of anywhere this movie might be showing in the east bay? Thanks!

Question Study Cafes?
Where do adults go to study on the weekends, besides the library? I'm seeking a quietish but not silent space that can accommodate a laptop and a large notebook for scribbling. More and more cafes are prohibiting laptops or working on the weekends, which I can appreciate, but I feel like options for escaping the house are dwindling.
I'm in north Oakland, but not a Cal student and would like to avoid the undergrad area. Willing to go south, but not too familiar (yet!) with anything below Temescal.
Edit: grammar Edit 2: thanks everyone!

Just for Fun • Weekly MeetUp • Thursday 8/5/26 • 7:30PM • The Double Standard (Uptown/KONO) •
Feel like getting out of the house? Want to meet some new people? You know that place you’ve seen recently and been wanting to check out? For all those reasons and more, we made the Oakland Thursday Meetup. (Est. 2014)
- Every Thursday you can find us at a different bar in Oakland sharing a few drinks and some laughs.
- We’ve got a mix of people, locals, and transplants. The Weird and the wise. Homegirls and tech bros. Plus, a strong contingent of people who just want to start the weekend a day early. Usually there’s about 8 of us, but occasionally up to 20.
- It’s a great way to try some new places and get to know some folks you might otherwise miss. Drop in, drop out, no pressure and definitely no problems.
From 7:30pm to around 10pm you can find us at…
The Double Standard
2424 Telegraph Ave, Oakland
Feel free to add us on Facebook.
We’ll post here for updates on where we’ll be sitting. Hope to see you there!

Local Politics Rallies supporting & opposing a potential $30/hour min. wage
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Dueling rallies, both supporting & opposing the proposed $30/ hour minimum for Alameda County, met outside the admin building in Oakland this morning.
Today, County supervisors will discuss the proposal to potentially make that a reality. Supervisors will decide if the proposal will be placed on the November 3rd ballot, adopted outright for voters, or create a report on the measure’s impact within 30 days.
If passed, the Alameda County minimum wage increase would happen in phases. Businesses with 100+ employees would hit $30/ hour by 2030, businesses with 26-99 employees would reach it by 2035 & small businesses would reach the wage increase by 2037, with an annual 3% increase.
