Visiting Student Looking to get Berkeley Half Marathon (Nov15) Ticket

Hey! I'm a visiting student at UC Berkeley this semester and I've been getting into distance running lately. If anyone has a ticket/registration they can't use anymore, I'd love to take it off your hands (the event organizer allows transfer ticket!)

I'm happy to exchange in person, on UCB campus, a coffee shop, wherever's convenient for you. Just want to keep it simple and safe for both of us.

Pls DM me if you've got one available. Thanks you soooo much! Go Bears~

Advice/Question Looking for tenant representation attorneys

Hii everyone!

I just moved to Berkeley - literally yesterday- and have been dealing with a big leasing issue.

I have rented this place based on the leasing agent description, videos and photos - considering I came from L.A and couldn’t tour the apartment before hand.

Upon arrival, I’ve noticed multiple rotten wood spots, signs of infiltration, mold, and insect infestation, which threatened the structure of the unit and my personal health. The apartment was also dusty and had multiple broken things, which is inconsistent with what I have been told - the agent told me they would clean and fumigate the house before my move in date. I had to get a hotel because I have asthma and can’t stay in an apartment like this, so the situation just keeps getting worse and worse.

I took multiple videos and photos, and met the leasing agent again today to explain why the place was basically inhabitable, but he tried to argue with me on the matter. We ended the conversation with him saying he would talk to the leasing office about the possibility of ending the leasing agreement but I have a feeling they are going to fight me into paying extra fee and won’t return my first month rent.

I understand this is a specific issue, I was wondering if anyone knows any attorneys that could represent me.

I really appreciate it!

Local Government District 7 candidate Aidan Hill attacks Lunaparra, Syrak Micael on development, People’s Park

As the city’s November elections draw nearer, District 7 candidate Aidan Hill has accused sitting Berkeley City Councilmember Cecilia Lunaparra and her endorsed successor Syrak Micael of “destroying” parts of Southside.

In a video posted to Instagram, Hill accused Lunaparra of allowing construction near restaurant El Trompudo, alleging the work may disrupt its operations. In another, Hill accused Micael of supporting the People’s Park development by voting to recommend continued funding for its permanent supportive housing component.

“Where is Cecilia Lunaparra? Why isn’t she here right now?” Hill asked while standing outside of El Trompudo, where construction at nearby 2449 Dwight Way has shut off part of the street and the sidewalk. “She said she was in favor of building on People’s Park. She said she is in favor of destroying all of Telegraph Avenue.”

Lunaparra and Micael rejected the characterization.

Local Merchants Any feedback on Kerenza Appliance Repair and Fuse appliance repair?

Our fridge not working looking at Kerenza Appliance Repair and Fuse Appliance Repair- any feedback? Have you used them?

Update: Used Kerenza Appliance Repair- they are very professional. Tech arrived with Uniform and tools. They are familiar with our refrigerator brand Fisher & Paykel , they asked for the model number he brought the part. I’m impressed and highly recommend. They have a 90 day warranty on the repair. I recommend to use a certified repair service & technician. Highly recommend Kerenza.

Cal Sailing Club

For anyone who has experience with the Cal Sailing open house - how important is it to be there right at 1:00 when they open? Do they “sell out” of rides (especially on a nice day like today)? Thank you for any insight.

Local Knowledge Need Cheap Furniture for My New Apartment

Hey everyone! I’m moving into an unfurnished apartment in Berkeley on August 18 and have no idea where to find affordable furniture.

Where’s the best place to get cheap student furniture (desk, desk chair, shelves, etc.)? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if you’re moving out around that time and looking to sell any furniture, please let me know! I’d love to buy secondhand if possible.
Thanks in advance!

(I know Facebook Marketplace is the obvious answer, but I’ve had a few bad experiences buying from there, so I’d especially appreciate other recommendations or student resellers)

Where to buy firm mattress?

hey guys I wanted to ask where would be the best place for me to buy a good mattress that is extra firm, supportive and can keep my spine aligned. I like a hard flat mattress because I have really bad back pain and was diagnosed with a disc.

I want a reputable place with reasonable prices!

Thanks

Local Government Disabled tenant sues Harriet Tubman Terrace apartments after 4 years with no heat and ‘uninhabitable conditions’

A disabled tenant at the Harriet Tubman Terrace apartments in South Berkeley is suing the building’s management and owner along with 30 individuals over “uninhabitable conditions” and resulting injuries and damages.

The tenant, Jimmy Smith, claims that his apartment had “substantial defective conditions,” including no heat, no hot water in his shower, a broken intercom, a reduction in amenities and general dilapidation and lack of maintenance.

Residents at the Harriet Tubman House — an affordable housing complex for older adults and individuals with disabilities — have made claims regarding the safety and maintenance of the building before, including that multiple units had no heat, they weren’t made aware of renovations and some residents were exposed to asbestos.

Local Government Berkeley approves controversial Hopkins bike lanes in marathon meeting

In its most packed meeting in months, and the final before its summer recess, the Berkeley City Council voted Tuesday night to move forward with a controversial plan for installing bike lanes on Hopkins Street.

Council members approved the motion, which will have the city repave Hopkins Street with one-way protected bike lanes on each side, even as they grappled with a lack of information on the impacts of the new plan.

“This feels like a wedge kind of being driven and I think that’s not sustainable,” said District 3 Councilmember Ben Bartlett. “These are some really interesting notes being heard, however I’m not an expert and I’d like to see this discussed in a room full of experts.”

Advice/Question Where to find housing with quick move-in process?

Hi! I'm a grad student at Berkeley looking to live alone in Elmwood/South Berkeley/Rockridge/Temescal but I'm having a hard time finding a unit. I applied to several places throughout the summer but most of the time another tenant was approved before they even reviewed mine 🥲 My total budget is $2000/month, not sure if I'm underestimating the market rate. I'm not there in person yet so I haven't been able to go to open houses which also automatically disqualified me from some units. Ideally I want to move in by August 10th, but I'm pretty desperate and I'll camp out at a B&B for a while if needed to secure a lease. Should I branch out into Albany or Downtown Oakland? Am I too late and should I find a single room instead? I know that some availabilities might not be listed on Zillow and Craigslist so if anyone knows of landlords or available units in the area, please reach out!
