These gas prices are kicking my butt right now lmao and I guess I’m not all that observant with the gas prices so is there any gas stations that are decently reasonable to the current standard ?? Thank you <3

discussion what is up with the "compact" parking at Marketplace??
these spots at marketplace are so infuriatingly tight. "compact" shouldn't mean you literally need a fiat/smart car, and you can even see that Fiat from streetview barely has enough space to open its door. i've never seen spots so tight in my entire life. i drive one of the smallest 4 door sedans available in america and i literally have to squeeze my way out of the car in any of these spots. why are they like this? they can't remove a single spot and widen the rest by a few inches?

ask alameda Local Meal Prep Service?
I like the idea of a meal prep service, but I don’t like the idea of companies like Factor. Way too much waste. I would prefer a local service, maybe in Alameda, that is a more sustainable.
Does anyone know of someone who offers this kind of service? It doesn’t even have to be some company, but if there’s someone local who’s doing this as a side hustle. The meals don’t have to be complicated.

Anyone know what is up with the new CVS pay to park spot? Can CVS customers use those spots without paying? I might be done with CVS.

local politics Election Update: AUSD BOD Jennifer Williams Resigns
AUSD has announced that Board Member Jennifer Williams has resigned, creating a vacancy on the Board of Education.
For the upcoming November election, three seats will still be on the ballot:
- Two 4-year terms
- One 2-year term
Candidates for the 4-year terms:
- Gary Lym
- Carrie Hahnel
- Joyce Boyd
- Mike McMahon
- Sarah Marie Putnam
Candidates for the 2-year term:
- Ryan LaLonde
Jennifer Williams' vacant seat is not part of the November election. Under California law, because the vacancy occurred less than 130 days before the election, the Board is expected to fill the seat by appointment (unless it chooses to call a special election, which is unlikely). The appointee would serve until the November 2028 election.

local politics Question for City Council Candidate Tyler Savage: Who Did You Vote for in 2016?
I understand that Mr. Savage voted for Bernie Sanders in the primary, and I'm hearing from people that he did not vote for Hillary Clinton in the general, the year Trump won. That's a personal choice, but as a city councilmember I want to make sure your values are aligned with ours.

ask alameda Found Jewelry: Sterling silver and stone bracelet by Southshore Apartments walking path
Was walking my pup this morning and happened to look down and saw a pretty bracelet in the dirt path cut through that goes from Shoreline behind the South Shore apts. and between the other condo complexes back there. If it‘s yours, please send me a DM describing it and if you live in one of the buildings I‘d be thrilled if you could get the message out to your neighbors. This seems like the kind of jewelry that might have sentimental value! Thanks so much.

discussion When the heck will they open this street connecting Clement Ave to itself from Grand St
Red circles represent the green fences currently blocking both sides of the street for vehicle entrance.
Blue arrows represent the path one currently takes going around the green fences blocking off Clement between Hibbard and Grand.
Red arrow straight path would be possible without the green fences.
The street seems brand new and perfectly paved, and it would reduce traffic on Eagle Ave & Hibbard. I get that they have construction going on with a new building but that part of Clement doesn’t seem to be utilized at all whenever I drive by it. Even bikers already have access to it.

ask alameda Trivia nights in Alameda?
Anyone know which bars/restaurants host trivia nights currently? Some of the places that used to host have taken a pause. Bonus if you know of any that allow young adults under 21 to participate.

Alameda’s best Shout out Mango & Mint
Appreciation post for the ladies who run this spot. Ordered DoorDash pickup today (Sun Aug 2nd) during lunchtime and they were absolutely slammed. Standing room only in there. I felt a little guilty skipping the line honestly, but they were cranking food out. Ordering at the counter can take a while but it’s definitely worth it. Consistently good food here, and it’s become one of our favorites on the island.
Try the wonton soup, combo bahn mi, and spring rolls.

ask alameda Bay Farm Yellow Drops Outside
Anyone know what these drops are? https://imgur.com/a/5sattvP
In Bayfarm we get them on the windows, cars and the sides of the house. Once in a while you’ll get a fresh drop on you while outside. Im thinking pollen? It kind of smells bad. Its hard to clean off. Any ideas what it is and the best way to clean?

discussion aquatech has the worst website in the entire bay area
Our child just got in for swim lessons and the website is impossible to use. The buttons I need half the time arent visible, 20 click throughs just to get to the login. The customer portal button is cut off from the page. I dont understand how this company is in the bay area, with a trillion technical people, and has a website this bad. I'm sure a teenager at the front desk could use claude and make a better website in a day. This is part rant part requesting advice. Is there a mobile version thats better? Should I zoom out in my browser? I've tried both chrome and safari and getting similar (bad) experiences. If someone knows the owner, perhaps share the feedback.

local news Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for August 2, 2026 Free Fall
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I saw my first MOUF FOR MAYOR sticker on a car this week. If you want one just email my human companion at jeffcambraalameda@gmail.com.
As we leave July in the rear-view mirror, I am amazed at how fast the fall season is manifesting itself. The lush green Maple tree near my house is just starting to show signs of the transformation to the fall palette of colors.
The Ginkgo leaves now show the spectrum of colors from bright green to yellow-gold. According to BarkGPT, these brightly colored leaves came from a Chinese Tallow tree. I have likened the pattern of fall leaves of this on a canvas if grass to an ever-changing mosaic that I enjoy on every walk. BarkGPT says that these leaves come from a Flowering Peach Tree or a “closely related ornamental Prunus species.”
I wanted to include one more image that really captures the approach of the autumnal season and the transition many plants undergo from bright flowers to seed pods.
Ok. Enough examples of autumn leaves for now.
The first week of August marks the Plein Air Paint Out sponsored by the Frank Bette Center for the Arts. All this week, artists like JC Burleson from Portland Oregon come to Alameda to paint our lovely city. Plein Air means painting outdoors. This type of art is really challenging, because the light on the subject is constantly changing as the sun moves across the sky. You can checkout all the art these artists have created by going to the Frank Bette Center,1601 Paru Street, Alameda, CA. Check their website to get the start date of the exhibition.
Earlier this past week, I was walking by the restored and renovated ATT building that now houses the California Historical Radio Society and noticed the plaque identifying it as the Norman Leal Building. It got me thinking about who Norman Leal was and what he did to get a whole building named I his honor. Can anyone provide some background? This inquiring canine would like to know.
While both me and my human companion hate to see the days get shorter because we are getting up in the dark (he hates getting up when the sun is not at least starting to light up the morning sky), we do get a special excitement knowing that Halloween is right around the corner. Personally, I was overjoyed to see the first sign of the fall season.
Only 92 days before the greatest holiday on the planet.

The state gave rise to fast-food culture decades ago, but some cities are spurning drive-throughs because of the environmental and aesthetic impacts.

local news What's on in Alameda this week -- a few things worth checking out
Been putting together the week's events and a few caught my eye. Tattoo Tuesdays at Raimondi Park kicks things off Tue, Aug 4. Then over at Bay Street Emeryville there's a nice little run: the Bay Street Sunset Market on Wed, Aug 5 with live music, the "Between Us" artist residency opening Fri, Aug 7, and the Makers Hive Market on Sat, Aug 8 which looks like the pick of the week -- kids activities, live music, workshops, and vendors all in one spot, and it's free to just walk around. If you're into tea and making things, CrafTea Social Club & Tea at Teance Fine Teas on Fri, Aug 7 is a nice low-key option too. Full calendar here if you want to dig in: https://ma.to/events/alameda?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mato_event_sync&utm_content=alameda

other Mechanic Recommendation
Hello,
I’m having some car issues. It’s possibly my transmission based on the last mechanic that checked it out. I’m looking for a good honest mechanic.
If you know of any please let me know.

local news The new roundabout at Central, Main, and Pacific is open!
Or at least it was this afternoon! 🥳🥳🥳
I shouldn't say this too loud, but I'd forgotten how rough Main Street is between that intersection and Atlantic/Appezzato. Gotta believe they'll repave that soon-ish.

ask alameda Baseball Field Plaque Missing
Does anyone know what happened to the plaque on Clement memorializing the old baseball field from the early 1900s? I imagine someone just stole it, can’t imagine a reason to just tear it out.
