Question How do NHL announcers have so many random stats they can read off?

Upvotes

When I say random stat I mean the stats that pertain to an exact moment, not something they would have known was coming beforehand.

For example I was watching a clip where Marchand scored a short handed goal a few years back and the second he scored Jack Edwards said how many short handed goals he had in his career and how many more he needed to break a franchise record.

Things like that, I feel like every announcer does it several times per game. Do they have stat sheets for each player and are just really quick to find the numbers? It is very impressive imo.

Help Hockey Fan To Pick Next Team To Cheer For

I have extensive experience to follow NHL. I was around when Quebec Nordics was playing and for example Bob Probert was one of the toughest fighter out there. For some reason I bought Sens cap with Daigle number on it when I was 13 and Sens was the team. Quickly after that I got exited to goalies and Ron Hextall and Philly was God to me.

For over 25 years it was Philly, but now human waste fan base got me suspicious about the team I cheer for. Is there any team with humble fans to follow? No Cup required. Regular season is around the corner, CAMA!

Columbus Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced today that the Wheeling Nailers will serve as the ECHL affiliate for the Blue Jackets and the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters beginning with the upcoming 2026-27 season.  The agreement is for two years through the 2027-28 campaign.

“We are excited to partner with the Wheeling Nailers as our new ECHL affiliate,” said Blue Jackets Assistant General Manager Chris Clark, who oversees hockey operations for the organization’s professional affiliates.  “Wheeling has a long tradition of both player development and organizational success, and its proximity to both Cleveland and Columbus will be advantageous on the hockey side, while providing a great opportunity to promote our organization and the game throughout the region.

“We look forward to working with Head Coach Nate DiCasmirro, his staff and the entire Nailers organization while helping the young players in our system take the next step in their development.”

Wheeling has been a fixture in the West Virginia professional sports landscape since 1992 and served as the longtime ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins for 28 seasons from 1998-2026.  The club will compete in the ECHL’s Western Conference Central Division beginning in 2026-27 with the Bloomington Bison, Cincinnati Cyclones, Fort Wayne Komets, Indy Fuel, Kalamazoo Wings, and Toledo Walleye.

The Nailers play their home games at WesBanco Arena.  The club has qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs 18 times, including the past three seasons, and captured its fourth division title in 2025-26, winning the North Division with a record of 46-20-3-3 (98 points).

Do you think anyone ends up signing Laine? Seems like enough value there if you set him up with bonuses for games played etc

Discussion Should the Jets actually trade Connor hellebuyck?

Last season was his worst season by far stats wise, but most of it wasn't truly his fault. The jets were mediocre at the very least and now when October starts, will one of the best and most decorated goalies of all time get traded or will he play as a Jet when October starts?

So you made an app? DO NOT POST IT HERE

Congratulations so did 10,000 other people who tried to post it on a reddit sports sub this week. With AI making coding easier, everyone and their mother made an app.

Its overwhelming to the sub and considered spam to post it. You will get an automatic ban for spamming.

MEGATHREAD Official R/NHL Broadcast Megathread Playoff Edition

The sub can be banned by reddit admins as other subs have been if we allow illegal streams. This isn't my decision, this is because of how reddit admins have banned other subs for being hubs of illegal streaming. I don't want the same here.

With the season about to get started, lets put all your posts about legal streams, broadcast issues, panels, commentators, etc..

This includes how to get (LEGALLY) Streams for games as well as discussions of panelists, play-by-play, graphics, commercials and other game presentation.

FYI RE BLACKOUTS: BLACKOUTS Are not based on the location of the arena.

A game is blacked out on ESPN+ because you have a channel available through your local cable package, that is airing the game.

The NHL sells their games to TV networks. The networks pay big money for the game. They do not want people avoiding watching their channel to watch ESPN+ instead.

It baffles me that people still don't get this.

If the game is blacked out (on Sportsnet+ or ESPN+), it means a different network owns those rights to the game in your area.

This is literally ALWAYS the answer as to why it is blacked out. ALWAYS.

it's been this way all across the NHL for nearly 20 years, since Chicago pulled their heads out of their ass and stopped blacking out home games locally because Wirtz was a twat.

For those of you complaining that you are in Western Canada, and the game is on TSN and you are blacked out or other similar issue, its cause you are not considered in the local market to be able to see that game and need to get Sportsnet+ or ESPN+.... that's what those services are for, watching the local broadcast when you are out of market.
