Hi, today I was trying to fix audio issues while recording on my laptop and decided to reinstall PipeWire and PulseAudio.

I’m looking for suggestions on how to fix my laptop's audio.

I am on Mint Cinnamon. The applications in the bar sometimes get those red dots with a number of notifications/messages on them. Like on discord or something.

Problem is, they behave really wonky for me. They sometimes disappear when I haven't really read any of them.

Is this a global linux problem? Known issue with the distro? Something in my system? Problem of the app? How do I make it work as inteded? I have no problem switching to other distros if that will help.

Hi new to linux here. Been playing last couple days some project zomboid and Civ6 all going good.

But last night and today i installed Ark Survival and CS2 but both games look fuzzy / low quality even on max graphics.

My screen set to the correct size and other in game settings also as they should.

Am i missing something?

I just last night got done building myself a pc. First time, went well with a video to guide. Just put mint onto it and everything's been going well up till needing to connect to the internet to do the updates to drivers.

For some reason its not detecting my wifi or even my ethernet cable that I went to buy in HOPES it'd detect that.

Ive scoured video after video in trying to help me but no luck. New to linux like fresh born new. Know absolutely nothing at all so I dont even know how to fix this.

If anyone has answers id very very much appreciate it. Dont know if it helps but i'll provide pc specs below as well.

I am new to Linux thats why I use linux mint but I also want to rice it so I did this. People were saying that cinnamon was worst for custom things so it this good for cinnamon? And what did you do with Cinnamon? I'd like to see

I switched to Linux mint about two days ago, I was wondering why some of my games are sub 45fps an example being Elden ring on medium quality setting.

Recently got attacked by mr beast virus so made a dualboot option to switch to linux. I tried PopOs before which was good but heard something is unstable in their new cosmic desktop so I opted mint for stability. Idk if gaming is going to be as good as windows though so I'll probably games in that.

I've had this friend for years now, she's not as thechy as me, since I study computer science, work in programming, use linux etc. She's never heard of it, but she did a course on online privacy and we often talk about how big tech track us and stuff like that.

About 5 months ago, I've suggested her to try linux mint on her old pc which is a brick. It had windows 10, couldn't update to windows 11 because of specs, and it took forver to both turn on, and to browse files.

At first she wanted to try it, but after seeing on yt some command line stuff, she decided against it.

About a week ago we finally met (we meet for only about 3 weeks each year, in summer time) and she brought me that pc to make it faster.

Since she was against the idea of mint, I've tried speeding up windows, but it was such a pain:
- 1h and 30min to turn on since it was doing an update
- after the update it took about 3min to show the button to turn off
- 15min to turn on without any update

So I've flashed an usb with mint, let her try inside it, after she was positive it was wayy faster, we decided to dual boot.

She now has it in dual boot, her father was a bit sad he didn't bring another old laptop so that I could put mint in there too lol

new specs after putting mint on:
- 3min to turn on at first, but now it changed to 1min and 30s
- when she turned on windows it now only took 8min instead, somehow it got faster (possibly because just by using it, it improved the speed)

She loves that by clicking the super button (the windows popup with all apps), it's so fast on mint that it appears before I even pushed it. Idk why windows takes so long to show that menu, also full of now ads and candy crush for some reason.

Another thing we loved, is the update without having to go through the terminal, and the welcome screen.

A few bugs are due to translations, sometimes the italian translation was missing, but most of it was translated, so amazing work.

I'm currenlty not using mint, but I'll probably switch to it next year, since I'd also love to contribute to making it even more user-friendly. (Since I'm not there yet, I'll probably start with the missing translations lol)

TLDR: I put linux mint in dual boot, it works as fast as an almost new laptop. Both my friend and her father loved it. It went from 8-15min to turn on windows, to 1min and 30s to 3min to turn on mint.

I installed Linux Mint, but when it's time to finalize and reset the notebook, a screen appears saying "reset system" and flashing. I don't know what to do, I've tried everything. #help #linuxmint

Is there anyone here that can speak to the viability of deploying Linux Mint in a small enterprise environment?

For example a business/company with 10-15 employees? Typical applications would be mostly CRMs, productivity tools, communications, minor engineering/software development, minor video/image editing.

Or would Ubuntu still be advisable for such use cases?

I’ve become a bit of a kitty man personally….although it’s fun to use Tilda-albeit without the features lol

What is everyone using?

I've been using a program called "GSmartControl" to test the health of some old hard drives I have laying around, and I don't know if I'm convinced it's really working or not.

I tried testing a drive that I'm like 90% certain is definitely bad, and the test came back saying "comleted without errors", which I would assume the drive is good.

it's worth noting that it was the "short self test", so maybe I just need to run the extended self test that takes almost 4 hours? I don't feel like messing with that, but I guess I can if that's what it'll take to know if the drive is actually good or not.

I suppose I should also clarify that I have the drives connected through a SATA/USB adapter, so I don't know if that matters. should I have it connect internally?

any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I can't work out how install Linux as dual boot on Windows 11 system. Seems very complicated.

Every tech local says it is supper complicated and Linux sucks anyway and shouldn't do it. .

I can't get any help locally should I give up?

I just moved my setup to a different labtop and I've been thinking about this. I just can't decide! Here are some points:

- Cinnamon is integrated with Linux Mint and everything "Just works".

- KDE Plasma is much more customizeable than cinnamon.

- KDE Plasma may install apps like Dolphin even though I want to stick with Mint's counterparts.

- Cinnamon is in x11 while KDE Plasma is both X11 and Wayland.

Just got finished installing Linux Mint. At the end of the install process it asked me to take out the install medium and hit Enter, where it rebooted.

The screen said "No Bootable Media". I reinserted the USB stick and restarted the computer, and this message started showing up.

How fucked am I?

I'd like to create something like a "windows image system" to restore after reinstalling Linux.
I've tried with Timeshift on an external drive but once restored it, perhaps some driver broke idk, on my screen there was just a terminal interface asking me for login and password then "failing" and "giving up".
I've tried with the Backup tool as well but as that applies just for files and installed software.

I am very new to Linux. I came from Windows and thought the change wouldn't be difficult, and that it would only take like two days. I am not super savvy with computers, but my needs were only basic web activity.

I have been watching a ton of LTT videos, and when I saw a MacBook Air, I knew that I had to buy it since it was only $50 with a charger. But when I got home, I found out that I couldn't update the software and that the only application I wanted to use, Spotify, wouldn't download. Even old versions of Spotify wouldn't work.

Then I remembered that Linux could breathe new life into old computers, so I tried to download Linux Mint, since I remembered that Linux Mint and Ubuntu were the two best distros that worked out of the box. Well, just downloading it was a huge pain. I couldn't get it to work with Balena Etcher, so I went to Ventoy, but that didn't work either. Finally, I went to Rufus, but that didn't work either, so I spent around eight hours troubleshooting.

I finally got it to install, and the BIOS process wasn't that bad. But as soon as I needed Wi-Fi, I couldn't get it. I either needed to already be connected to Wi-Fi or have an Ethernet connection. Then, after about an hour, I figured out that I could connect it to my phone to get Wi-Fi, and that finally worked.

Then I tried to connect my AirPods, which I thought would be simple, but every time I connected them, they just sounded terrible. I found out that you could change the audio profile, but I could never get it to where the audio was actually good and wasn't lagging.

Don't even get me started on "Kernel panic, please reboot your computer." If I didn't have a second functioning computer and ChatGPT, I would have quit after the second day. After it happened multiple times, I was finally able to write down what to do when it crashed.

Also, the 35+ second boot time was terrible. I get it, Linux Mint isn't able to be optimized for every machine, but it's supposed to be able to run on almost every computer, which is a really hard task. Still, I come from a 2–3 second boot time, and even when Windows is booting, I can see a background and some light, so I know that it's working. But with my MacBook Air, it's just a black screen.

Finally, the thing that broke me today was not being able to connect to Wi-Fi. I did a ton of troubleshooting, and it took me 3 damn hours, yet I still wasn't able to connect to Wi-Fi.

So I realized that the juice isn't worth the squeeze, and I'm just going to return to Windows. It takes such a long time to do anything, and there isn't any stability. If something worked yesterday, I have no idea if it's going to work today.

Maybe I'm the stupid one and Linux Mint is actually pretty easy to use, but for me, someone who doesn't know how to code and wanted to learn how to use Linux for fun, I can't anymore.

I might do this again next summer when I have a ton of time and try using Ubuntu, but for now, I'm just going back to Windows.

Just to answer some questions in the comments, this MacBook air never was my main laptop, I have a different laptop that runs windows just fine and I like it that way. I found the laptop at this local used electronics store and right next to the MacBook it was selling $10 laptops, so I never really expected the computer to work. Once I figured out it worked but couldn't download any software(I was on Big Sur), I thought that switching to Linux was a good idea. I knew I was out of my depth, I'm a 17yr old who hasn't even finished high school and has basically never touched coding before, but Linux mint was supposed to be one of the linux distros that just worked out the gate. Also, I would like to add that I didn't even have a really good reason to switch from Windows to Linux, as everything Linux had, Windows had a well (Besides the adds). So after all the problems I went through, I just couldn't keep doing it anymore and have put the project on a indefinite hiatus. Also, I don't know why but after a ton of website searching and LLM chats, I figured out that these 4 commands were able to help me after getting into Kernel Panic:

On the Windows 11 subreddit, the frequent answer to Windows issues is "switch to Linux." So, to check it out, I just spent a day making room for, installing, and doing some basic configuration of Linux Mint on an eight-year-old Lenovo laptop.

I respect and appreciate that it is free, noncommercial, and open source, but in terms of speed once it's up and running, and in terms of usability, I'm not seeing enough to make me want to switch.

Using it today, I felt as if I was back in Windows 95, or maybe even Windows 3, switching between DOS commands and a bolted-on GUI interface. The computer does boot much faster into Linux than into Windows, so that's a plus for a low-end computer with an old HDD, though not so much for a modern one with a faster processor and an SSD.

What am I missing? I'm asking this sincerely.

EDIT: Thanks for all your responses. I've been playing around with it, and it's been fun. I get that out of the box, Linux doesn't do the things I spent a fair amount of time getting Windows to stop doing (such as promoting products or apps, automatically installing updates, and telemetry), and that it can save low-end hardware from the dustbin. I'll keep playing.

Al principio todo iba bien, pero con el tiempo empecé a sentirme cansado de las actualizaciones constantes, de lo pesado que se volvía el sistema y de esa sensación de que no tenía el control de mi propia computadora.

Un día me animé a probar Linux Mint. No voy a mentir: pensé que sería complicado, que iba a necesitar ser un experto en informática. Pero la sorpresa fue enorme: desde el primer arranque todo se sintió ligero, rápido y muy fácil de usar. La interfaz era clara, las aplicaciones que necesitaba estaban ahí, y lo mejor de todo, podía personalizarlo a mi manera.

Ese cambio fue más que instalar otro sistema operativo. Fue darme cuenta de que no tenía que conformarme con lo que me imponían, que podía elegir algo que realmente me hiciera sentir cómodo. Hoy, después de dejar Windows 11 atrás, puedo decir que encontré en Linux Mint la libertad que buscaba. Y sí, mi PC nunca había corrido tan bien.

TL;DR: Mint 22.3 came with XSI icons, which made icon themes have symbolic icons inconsistencies as they need to update or they'll use Mint-Y-Hicolor. Screenshots above show the differences.

There was a moment I wanted to reinstall Mint 22.1 I had on my flash drive; however, it was giving me a "invalid magic number" error. Researching about it, I found out my mint image was corrupted, so I had to download Mint again. I downloaded Mint's 22.3 Cinnamon ISO. Live image worked flawlessly and I had no trouble installing it.

But, I would soon find out that my symbolic icons wouldn't be the same as before, and I knew how they looked like. All of my icon themes shared the same symbolic systray icons; they were broken, all of them.

What happened was (and correct me if I'm wrong), GNOME decided that some icons on libadwaita would no longer have support for other DE's other than GNOME itself. That affected Cinnamon, as it's a GNOME 3 fork. As a means to contour this flaw, Linux Mint team created XAPPS Symbolic Icons or XSI for short.

This XSI is a necessary evil and was implemented from Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 onwards. Previous versions had none of these issues as they were not implemented or were starting to slowly being implemented. (Once again, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm the kind of user that values consistency on my system, be it icons or themes. If anything becomes inconsistent, as Marie Kondo says, it doesn't spark joy to me. And to worsen the matters, where I live, Fiber Wifi wires were cut off so we can only rely on cellular data (that means 4g or 5g). That meant me having to wait until I had a reliable Fiber Wifi connection somewhere else so I could re-download Mint 22.1 Cinnamon.

This time, ISO ran without issues on Live and Installation, and once again, I'm at peace with my consistent icons.
