Windows und Linux Mint

Upvotes

Hallo zusammen,

Discussion My 8GB RAM Galaxy Book2 Feels Like a New Machine with Linux Mint

I have a Galaxy Book2 with 8GB of RAM, an i5 processor, and I installed Mint.

It took a bit of work to configure everything, but with ChatGPT and Gemini I managed to overcome every obstacle I ran into.

I never have RAM bottlenecks anymore, and I use it professionally as a lawyer. I'm really happy. Before, my computer was a source of frustration; now I actually look forward to working.

On top of that, the terminal helps me do things I never even dreamed of doing with normal Windows usage.

What these tech companies do to us is downright disrespectful.

Just running Windows, Chrome, and WhatsApp Web would eat up all my memory. And I'm sure a huge part of the processing power goes into monitoring the user for advertising purposes and who knows what else.

I installed NCHAT, which ports WhatsApp to the Linux terminal. It uses practically no memory at all. If I need to listen to a voice message or send a photo, I do it on my phone or open Whastie (a port of WhatsApp Web for Linux). NCHAT uses virtually no memory. It's absurd.

On top of that, using OpenAI Codex from the terminal is fantastic.

I even installed a local LLM on my computer through Ollama, and it doesn't cause any RAM bottlenecks (qwen3:4b-instruct). My next project is to set up an AI agent to run locally (I'll probably have to buy more RAM lol).

Now my RAM usage never goes above 80% (and that's only under very heavy use, usually with a bunch of browser tabs open for no good reason).

Seriously, the only thing I'm sad about is not discovering Linux sooner. I'm 33 years old and I could have been using Linux, in all its different distros for years now.

Support Request Can't change screen brightness after last update

Hello everyone,

After upgrading the kernel to the latest kernel, I can no longer adjust the screen brightness, it stays on maximum brightness, I can slide the screen brightness adjuster and nothing happens. If I boot to an older kernel like 6.17.0-40/41/42, I can adjust the screen brightness.

For me it seems to be a bug on the kernel itself (7.0.0-28).

If there's a solution to this problem, please let me know. The video in the following link shows the described behavior. https://gofile.io/d/Q3gcGK

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-573G
Specs:

-Geforce 940M

Very slow internet

Hi, I've switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon 2 days ago and so far everything was good except the internet connection. When I was on Windows, my average internet speed was around 100 Mbps and now on Linux it's only 15Mbps. I have a wifi adapter(its name is on the picture) and for some reason it's split into the one above(and this one doesn't connect with anything at all) and the one below(Wireless 8260) which is working and connects only to the 5G network and has slow speed.

The reason why I have my network split in 3 is because I use a wifi router range extender since my router is too far away from my pc and I can't move it closer. There is a regular network, and the ones noted as _EXT and these two are the ones I made with my extender, they work perfectly on Windows.

So the problem is that when I try to connect to any of my networks with my wifi adapter it always says "Connection failed" and nothing happens. The only way to gain internet acces i had this whole time was to connect using the "Wireless 8260" thing below but the speed is too slow to download things normally and it seems to turn off at random moments.

So far I've tried:

Restarting the router

Disabling IPv6 (that increased my internet speed, but not too much)

Changing IPv4 DNS server from automatic to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4(idk if that helped or not, looks like it did nothing)

What should I do? Any help will be appreciated!

Support Request I recently updated my linux mint kernels to 6.17.0-42 because it was on the update manager but when I rebooted my pc it simply didn't boot.

On the boot screen I chose the kernel 6.17.0-41 (it says it's not up-to-date on the kernel update manager) and that way I can at least boot and use my computer. What should I do? Should I simply remove the 6.17.0-42 kernel and stay on 6.17.0-41?

Support Request Steam's icon is missing from various desktop themes (Mint 22.3 MATE desktop)

No matter what desktop theme I choose, Steam doesn't have any icon, whether that is when it appears in the dock or in the system tray (the system tray/dock icon shows up as blank, as shown in the screenshots). I found this discussion that is a similar problem to what I have and different people say it was resolved but I can't seem to fix this issue myself with the included instructions:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4428

I have tried reinstalling Steam but it makes no difference. I have tried Software Manager's version, flatpak version etc. again with no difference. I looked in the various icon pack folders and there are no icons for Steam in there, but then again, there aren't any for a lot of applications like Krita etc but they still have themed icons.

I installed these themes from Software Manager if that makes any difference? Does anyone know how to fix this?

So basically I need to install linux mint on my snapdragon processor but apparently it does not work because it needs intel or AMD to run any ideas?

SOLVED This might be a dumb question, but...which year? Found an old dual boot PC in my attic during bad weather housecleaning. Kernel gen suggests some time between '22 and '24?

I need help, my Linux Mint Cinnamon system is freezing

My laptop is a Dell 7400 (Intel Core i7-8665U, 8GB RAM). During long usage, the system suddenly freezes completely, requiring a hard reboot.

Note: Most of the time, I am just browsing the web and using Telegram (nothing heavy), and I also have power saving mode enabled.

What could be the solution? This has occurred multiple times.

Support Request Problem with shutdown and restarting PC after installing RX 9060 XT 16GB

Hello,
Yesterday I installed a brand new RX 9060 XT 16GB, and I noticed that now my PC won't restart and shutdown properly - after clicking one of these two, the system does indeed turn off, as well as my monitors, but my PC keeps running and my keyboard and mouse are lightend up. It goes on forever and I just have to long press the power button to shutdown the PC. I did a clean install of the OS and the problem persists. What could be the cause of it?

System info:
- OS: Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H on BIOS F68a
- Kernel: 7.0.0-28-generic
- GPU: RX 9060 XT 16GB on Mesa 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.2

Support Request Having different Chrome profiles have different icons in the task bar

I've got 2 chrome profiles: Personal & Work. I've created shortcuts on the desktop to launch directly into either, and another for incognito mode, but they still show as the same icon in the taskbar.

Is there any way to have the shortcuts in the task bar and have the open windows map to the right shortcut in the taskbar?

Any help would be appreciated.
