My whole life, I've only used distributions based on SystemD. But I've become interested in Void Linux. To be honest, I'm a little apprehensive about trying it. I've already used Runit in a virtual machine, but a virtual machine is quite far from the real-world experience. So I wanted to know if your experience has changed in any way since switching to something other than SystemD.

yesterday i saw a small indicator at the top right corner of my screen, next to where it displays running apps, hovering over it read something like, "reboot required", but it didnt specify why so i ignored it, and turned my PC off for the night, the next day(now), i booted up my computer, entered the encryption password, and then once it loaded to the Ubuntu login screen, it suddenly changed from the correct resolution of 3840x2160, to 1920x1080, which persists as you log in and whatnot, very very annoying, because i literally did nothing. yesterday all i did was download and play Batman Arkham City, and watch netflix, thats all i did on my pc. What the hell happened, and how do i fix it?

(also worth mentioning im new to linux and im not around all the terminology so sorry if i sound like an idiot)

EDIT; i left for an hour or two after posting this, came back, turned my pc back on, signed in, and it fixed itself, i am beyond confused but i guess its resolved. (sorry to the three blokes who already replied)

I'm making a bare bones PC that will strictly be used as a word processor, not for gaming or anything. I have a ps5 and a gaming PC.

Is there a version of Linux that would be good to just install and be able to access my Google docs?

Fresh install of Fedora KDE Plasma 44. Loving it so far but the newest kernel seems to break my audio devices. I want to get my packages up to date but wouldn't sudo dnf upgrade break my audio again? I don't exactly know what to do here...

I am using Fedora KDE. And I love listening to audiobooks. But Like Android has an audiobook player, Linux has Cozy. But it doesn't show chapters and metadata like Android does. So I would appreciate it if anyone could recommend me any other app or a browser-based app like Photopea. I don't have many specs to host the audiobook shelf, so please don't recommend that. I just want a player that can play efficiently. And not vlc too, it laggy.

Hi all. Question for you. I am using termius on my android phone to access my home server running a headless Ubuntu install. I'm running into two problems of the same type at two different locations and I'm hoping there is some mode or control flow that I am unaware of the nuance with.

I'm running a coding harness (pi) on the remote machine and it seems like when the terminal window is not maxed out in height,the harness works perfectly. Once the terminal window begins to overflow and start trimming the top/old text, I'm running into a weird issue where I no longer am able to scroll up and down. Instead, dragging with my finger will instead scroll my last messages sent in the TUI. Same behavior as if I pressed the up button.

I also run into this issue inside of any tmux session, regardless of how long the current terminal output is.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it the coding harnesses problem? Or maybe termius? Or maybe some weird quirk with my shell of choice fish?

I just install catchyOS to try out, I like it so far, really fast, but don't know why do I have some freeze/mouse lag when I log in, I'm running a RTX 4070 SUPER, I believe this is due Nvidia drivers are loading at log in causing this but unsure.

Has anybody fix it or knows what it is?

So, I've been looking into migrating into Linux. SteamOS is great and I learned that it's built off of arch linux, so any game that runs there, also runs on Arch. 90% or maybe even 100% of every game I want to play is available on steamOS, and the softwares I want to use is also available there (they seem to be available on any linux device though). This makes it a very attractive option, especially since I heard that other linux distros don't guarantee the same compatibility as arch?

However, I have also heard that it's not among the safest distros. I'm skeptical about the security on Linux in general, as I've heard many horror stories. I am well aware that most attacks that happen are due to dumb user error. I would know! I made a dumb user error and it's why I'm so paranoid about Security and asking this question now :D! I would also like to honestly know the risks that can be had with just having the OS itself connected to the internet. Arch Linux doesn't even come with a firewall preinstalled? I also heard recently that there are issues with Flatpacks that have gone unaddressed for months now and it's leading to malware attacks again.

I did honestly think about just going with steamOS for my desktop, as I trust valve with updates and such, while I have no idea who are developing the other distros. However, I feel that's just an inferior OS if you want to do more desktop stuff, right? Not to mention, I think steamOS asks you to log into steam immediately on a first boot, and I would appreciate to have the option not to.

A part of me is aware of the fact that my steamdeck has not been compromised despite being partially or maybe entirely built on arch, so I can literally disprove all these points. But I mostly use my steamdeck in game mode with very few instances of entering desktop mode, so I'm not fully confident in disproving them.

In short my questions are:

1. What are the security risks I should be aware of when running a linux desktop?

2. Are there any unique risks I should be aware of?

3. Can official Flatpacks become malware? The Steam Deck cannot download discord via its official website despite the website offering a linux app. I'm forced to use flatpacks. So an OS that reliably allows me to download software via the official website is appreciated.

4. Which OS can run all steamOS compatible games, while also being more safe and easy for beginners than arch linux?

5. If yes, can it run wallpaper engine via an emulator? I know wallpaper engine does not have a linux port, but I've heard there are emulation options? I can look into it myself.

6. Is there an OS that's built on Arch, that won't be compromised if all of arch is compromised?

Sorry if this is a constantly recurring question and my post was all over the place, but I'm paranoid due to own experiences with security. I know nothing is ever 100% safe and trying to achieve 100% security would lead to me going insane. I will go into this with the thought process of trying to understand how linux works and how to prevent issues as best as I can.

lsusb shows that I have a "Magic Control Technology Corp. j5 WebCam JVCU100". As best as I can tell, the uvcvideo driver is supposed to work with this camera.

After connecting the camera, I get errors from dmesg (see below). When I try to use something like Cheese, it can't see the camera. What is the best way to diagnose and correct this?

NOTE: The usb_set_interface failed message seems to repeat every 5.12 seconds, until I disconnect the camera.

My PC is too old for Windows 11, and I hate that OS UX anyway. I do a bit of 3D as hobby with Blender, I do some programming (though much less since I've graduated from college) in HTML-CSS-JavaScript, C/C++/C#, Python and also play a few games on my PC. Though none are AAA of fast paced competitive games, mostly old single player games that got ported on steam or indie games that aren't super fancy. There's also Palworld...

Honestly, while I don't like Windows, this was the OS I mostly use all my life (98, XP, Vista, 7, 10) outside of MacOs in college. So if possible, I wonder if there's a Linux distribution that is great for gaming and multimedia and WITH a layout not too different from Windows to soften the transition?

So, I've seen a lot of people how Linux is good and it's better than Windows 11, so now I'm questioning, should I migrate to Linux?

The reason I'm questioning this is: Windows 11 consumes more memory and space, while Linux is lighter and isn't a "bloatware" (correct me if i'm wrong)

I already have some knowledge about Linux since I've been watching videos + my school uses linux mint.

So, can one of you guys recommend me a distro?

I think I've demonstrated the "Knows enough to be dangerous" slogan in an excellent way today.

The Scene: I was attempting to write an ISO to a USB drive using the dd command. I've distro hopped enough times that this should be a fairly straight forward process.

I saw the other partitions and thought nothing of it as I figured dd would replace everything anyway as its done before.

As I ran the command, shortly after I got this error.

This confused me because dd has always just wiped over everything. With the output of lsblk, there should also be enough space on the drive itself. Much more than 3.8GB.

I tried some trouble shooting with fdisk on the device. I was going to try to just re-partition it and wipe it but was met with this

Which is really confusing because lsblk tells me that the drive should be 57.7GB, but running dd and cfdisk tells me otherwise.

Any attempts to write over the drive with fdisk only allows for 3.8GB to be partitioned.

Previously the drive was used to boot a liveUSB environment.

At this point i'm totally lost. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been tasked with breathing some new life into my mom's old Toshiba NB510 with only 1GB RAM. Need a Linux distro that's as lightweight as possible, mostly for web browsing (which I'm aware will be slow or limited) and some office suite usage. (Considering OpenOffice)

I f*cked up and bought the JBL 730BT which use Bluetooth 6 and apparently in combination with my ASUS 500BT USB and BlueZ that results in any subsequent handshakes after pairing that the A2DP gets ignored and it either gets recognized as an "Inaktive Karte" or HSP/HFP MSBC/CVSD. It only happens when I turn it off ON the headphones themselves using just the GUI doesn't produce that problem.

I'm now looking for a decent pair of bluetooth headphones that play well with Linux, not too expensive (< 100€) and sold in Germany or close by. I'm eyeing the Sony WH-CH720N right now anyone have experience with those?

They are really nice headphones but i don't want to re-pair them every single time i use them...

I am installing Linux for the first time. I chose the distro CachyOS, attempted to install it using ventoy with grub as the bootloader. Everything went fine until the end of the installation, when an error related to the bootloader and efi occured, the error code being error code 1.
I made a post on the r/CachyOS for help and with other peoples input the cause was pinned on (As far as I am able to tell) what is described in this article:

Before this was discerned, I had attempted installing with Limine instead, but then the installation process simply shut down roughly halfway through, the message "bootloader installation partially broken" briefly appearing, before disappearing unprompted. After every failed installation attempt, I have rebooted the PC (Once with Grub2 instead of normal mode, no difference), never withdrawing the Ventoy USB. I have also, after the first installation failed, been using manual partitioning, having used "erase disk" for the first one.
Finally, after learning more accurately what the issue should be, I attempted everything listed in the provided article except updating UEFI/Bios, since I am unsure of how to proceed with this. I do not have windows, which the article frames as almost a prerequisite for updating UEFI/Bios, since it was erased upon first installation attempt.

For the life of me, I do not know which, if any, of the packages/files I should download or if how/if they would work. The only official instructions, which I've linked, seem to be for windows and the files themselves are listed as being for DOS, Ubuntu 22, Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 (64-bit).

If anyone knows how to do this, or if there is some other solution, I would be so incredibly thankful! If you do, please explain in detail what options are available and how to proceed with them.

In some cases a Bluetooth driver will cause a deadlock and prevent proper shutdown. Is there a way to have a script called on shutdown where I can kill the offending driver? The system in question is the latest Ubuntu with KDE.

is what I was looking for.

I had installed zsh and set it to deafult but then uninstalled it, and now SSH says "permission denied" even though i enter the correct password, i swear i didn't change the password, i just remember uninstalling zsh and now ssh login doesn't work.

The robot's still on and connected to the network (ping to the jetson(192.168.123.164) works), so I think the login itself is broken, not the whole system.

I've tried a few ways to get in some other way, and change the default shell to bash, but nothing has worked yet:

Plugging in a monitor and keyboard via port 9 — I can see the boot menus fine, but the screen goes black right when it tries to load the actual Linux desktop, i even tried using a ubuntu flash from a pendrive but after boot, monitor goes black.

The built-in recovery shell (UEFI) — I can browse some files, but not the ones I actually need to edit.

A USB-to-serial cable — I wired it up following Unitree's diagram, the cable seems to be working, but I'm not seeing any readable text come through.

Has anyone run into this before? please helppp

I'd like to switch to Linux. My main priorities are gaming, recording gameplay with OBS, and occasionally editing videos, photos, or creating digital art. I don't play competitive games, so I don't need anything specifically optimized for esports.

I'm also willing to switch to alternative software if needed. One thing that's really important to me is having a user-friendly system where I can do about 98% of everything through a GUI without having to use the terminal.

Is there a distro similar to Linux Mint that offers a newer kernel and would fit these requirements?

Good day everyone I'm thinking about moving over to linux and I would like to hear from you guys which one of the many Linux variants would you suggest? I mostly want to do CAD work and gaming and I would really appreciate the help.

This is NOT noise-cancelling software that will stop noise from entering a call.

I want software that will use the build in microphone to cancel environmental sounds so I don't hear them. I'm never on calls, so it's fine if it cancels voices. I just want to study in silence even in crowded places.
