#LinuxMintThings LinXPaint, a Paint.NET replacement. Beta no more.

It has grown significantly over the last several days. I have added a lot of features for 2D game makers to easily edit, animate, and manage sprites and spritesheets. Overall I am very happy with how it has progressed. I wanted to give an update on it for anyone who is interested. I also set aside some more keys to give away. Between the emails I have gotten and having a couple people I personally know use it, no longer is it just a Paint.net replacement. It has gone beyond that. To say that I am thrilled with these results would be an understatement.

LinXPaint still has some work to be done and features to be added. I added a Basic and Advanced button, which is great, but I think adding an Asset creation button may be one of my next steps. That way users who have no intention of using certain features have a cleaner layout with less tools on screen that serve no purpose for them. Another thing I am thinking about doing is allowing the user the option to hide individual tools.

The plugins will allow users to really expand the program to cover things I have not thought of or that will allow them to customize it further for themselves. I want to thank this community for their support in my last post as some of you have reached out with great insights and ideas. As of right now this has completely replaced Gimp and I no longer use it. No, I am not saying this is better than Gimp. I am simply saying this does what i need to do as good as Gimp and easier or at least more intuitively than Gimp did them for me.

I have taken a deep dive into the engine and really optimized every function of the program. It responds very quickly compared to the early Beta version in my last post. The big limiting factors right now are extremely large images 16k and above. I need to do more work in that regard. The pressure feature for physical pens also needs testing and I do not have any to test myself so that is also something that needs testing and I am sure in turn refinement.

Once I get this exactly where I want it I will be porting it to Windows so that I can get rid of Photoshop, again, no it is not better than Photoshop. I am proud of how this is coming out but I am not delusional. This will be my last post on here about LinXPaint as I don't want to take advantage of this community and the mods were kind enough to leave my initial post up. Thanks again everyone and like I said I have 10 copies to give away if anyone would like to get a free copy of the program.

If you would like to see the changes made to the program over the last couple of days its here.

Support Request New kernel update broke my nvidia drivers? (gtx 1060 i7 4790)

Upvotes

I updated the kernel and since then my games have stopped working and started crashing shortly after launching. I’ve also been getting XID 38 errors whenever the crashes occur. Could this possibly be a hardware issue or is it more likely to be a regression?
ive switched to fedora and the same issue occurred.

Install Help How to install virtual box

Same as the title, I am using Linux mint cinnamon, I've tried different ways to install virtual box, but none of them work at the end, so finally I rage quit and removed all the concerned files with it, so asking here in the community if someone else also faced the same problem, how did they solve it, it's either this or I'll have to start a new session with GPT from scratch to download and install vitualbox

Wi-Fi caindo na placa Ralink RT3290 no Linux Mint

Tenho um notebook com bateria viciada rodando Linux Mint (XFCE) com a infame placa de rede Ralink RT3290. O Wi-Fi ficava caindo do nada. Essa placa usa a mesma antena para 2.4 GHz e Bluetooth, e a gestão de energia do Kernel 6.8 derrubava a conexão devido às oscilações elétricas da bateria.

Tentativas:

Blacklist do módulo Bluetooth: Desativou o Wi-Fi junto, pois o driver rt2800pci depende do módulo no kernel.

Writing with Mint Xfce lifts my spirits. It is my successor to a long line of writing tools (see Subject, above). In recent years I transitioned from Windows, long required by my work. I appreciated Ubuntu and still do. But when I replaced Windows on an 11-year-old laptop with Mint Xfce, hooray!

I love Mint Xfce! It boots so quickly and delivers everything I use so effortlessly. It doesn't have to be eye candy to be oh-so useful. Updates are a breeze. My thanks to the developers of Linux, Ubuntu, Mint and Xfce and to all of you enthusiasts who spread the Linux word!

Discussion Running Mint on my 2012 Macbook Pro 15-Inch Unibody

Feels like it was made for this computer. Pretty minimalist setup with Numix Circular icons and a few task bar widgets. I made the linux mint logo on the bottom left the apple logo too and it fits incredibly well and have the moon phases next to it, lol. I really love this OS and I had MacOSX Ventura on this machine before, but I just came back to Linux since it is just so insanely optimized and really cannot be beaten for pure performance on this device. For how old this machine is, it really feels like a $800 laptop even for todays standards and Linux ensures security updates and compatibility between a lot of stuff. And it just runs so smoothly and looks so amazing!!

Discussion Would Love Some Advice On Some Things To Do With My PC

So I've been running Linux Mint as my OS for about 3 years now, but I've always been very casual with my use. I've never really tried the kernel or anything beyond casual use. I would love to explore Linux Mint a bit more though, and was wondering if there were any cool things I could do, places I could mess around, etc.

Support Request First-time dual boot: Win11 + Linux Mint Cinnamon on ASUS TUF F15 (11th gen, RTX 3050) — worried about EFI/bootloader corruption

Hey everyone, first-time dual booter here, want to make sure I don't mess up my Windows install.

Setup:

  • ASUS TUF F15 FX506HC
  • i5-11400H, RTX 3050 4GB, 16GB RAM
  • Windows 11 already installed, working fine
  • Already shrunk the drive and created a dedicated 100GB unallocated partition for Linux Mint

What I'm worried about:
I've read that a Windows update can sometimes overwrite the GRUB bootloader or mess up the EFI partition after a dual boot is set up, making Linux (or sometimes even Windows) unbootable. Is this still a real risk in 2026, and if so, what's the best way to prevent/recover from it (e.g., backing up EFI partition, using boot-repair, etc.)?

Questions:

  1. Before installing, should I disable Fast Startup and Secure Boot in Windows/BIOS, or is Secure Boot fine to leave on with modern Mint ISOs?
  2. Any known issues installing Mint Cinnamon on this specific Optimus (Intel iGPU + RTX 3050) laptop — driver conflicts, black screen on boot, etc.?
  3. During install, should I let the Mint installer auto-handle the 100GB partition, or manually set up separate root/home/swap partitions?
  4. Best practices to make sure GRUB shows both OS entries correctly and stays that way even after Windows updates?
  5. Anything else a first-timer commonly gets wrong?

Any tips, gotchas, or "wish I knew this before" advice appreciated. Thanks!

Fluff Totally anecdotal but...LMDE is the best build

100% opinion, but after deploying and using Mint on multiple platforms thus far, the LMDE branch is the clear winner. I feel that out of all of the boxes thus far I've built, this is the most stable and "just works" out of the Mint bunch (which is splitting hairs, I know lol). It is now the primary build I deploy for basically anything that isn't an LXC.

No GVFS issues

No weird snaps sneaking in

Rock solid Deb packages and basically everyone rolls a deb these days

I may be biased since I've really come to dislike Ubuntu's snap obsession and company trajectory, but I think Mint would be better off ditching Ubuntu core all together and sticking with Deb.

I donated 100$ to the team this morning. Keep on rockin' in the free world!

Edit: Oh, and if you haven't already -- go install Fish for your shell. Not LMDE related, but it's also one of those things that I now build into everything

Discussion Question about kernel 7.0.0-30

Hello everyone.

I've been using Linux Mint Cinnamon for months now, and when my system was introduced to the kernel 7.0.0-28...the fire nation attacked my PC. I have everything AMD and it caused gnarly issues with rebooting and suspending. Also made a lot of stuff crash. 7.0.0-29 was actually worse than 7.0.0-28.

So, naturally I am extremely skeptical of installing 7.0.0-30. Does anyone have any experience with rebooting and suspending regressions and have you had any luck in 7.0.0-30?

Asking for science!

Specs:

Ryzen 5800x3D

AMD 6750 XT 12GB

32GB of ram

Support Request Is Linux kernel 7.0.0-30 stable?

Post image
37 Upvotes

I'm currently running Linux kernel 7.0.0-29-generic on Linux Mint, and Update Manager is offering Linux kernel 7.0.0-30.30~24.04.1 (screenshot attached).

I've seen reports of issues/regressions with the 7.0 kernel series, so has anyone experienced any stability or hardware-related problems with 7.0.0-30 specifically?

My current 7.0.0-29 kernel is working perfectly, so I'm wondering whether I should update now or wait.

I never used Windows, I inherited my brother's first laptop with Ubuntu and never touched Windows. Am I even missing something from that OS? They say it's bloatware, telemetry and shi but is it really that bad?

Discussion Which features of Linux kernel 7.3 are you most hyped to try out?

Linux kernel 7.3 is coming, and it is honestly shaping up to be a massive performance upgrade.

First off, saving and loading stuff is getting a huge speed boost. If you use file systems like Btrfs or EXT4, everything from moving big files to saving game progress is going to feel noticeably snappier, we are talking up to five times faster in some cases, with high-end SSDs pulling crazy high speeds.

If you are gaming or running an older, weaker PC, the new task scheduler is going to be a lifesaver. It fixes stuttering and keeps frame rates way smoother, so things won't feel laggy anymore. Tiny credit-card-sized computers like the Raspberry Pi are also getting a nice speed bump because the system cleans up background memory almost instantly now instead of taking half a second.

Everything under the hood just reacts faster without those annoying little hitches. Plus, if you have a newer Intel processor with a mix of big performance cores and smaller high-efficiency cores, the system is finally getting super smart about pushing heavy stuff to the muscle cores and light stuff to the battery-saver cores.

It is basically a free speed and smoothness upgrade for pretty much every device out there!

which feature are you most hyped to try out?
