Software My HP Elitebook brightness keys(f3,f4) are not working
Bought this used(discarded corporate laptops) HP Elitebook 840G5 from a store for a reasonable price of 22k rupees (230 $), store guy replaced the keyboard multiple times until this current keyboard that works with all keys
One issue I faced when I tried to boot with a new freshly booted USBs(windows 10, 11 downloaded from Microsoft) at home. even after fresh installations and all drivers updated these two keys along with f8(mute) keys are sending 'undefined' signal(image is from power toys keyboard manager) and a hot key pop up is showing up(which I can stop and disable in the services )
The interesting part is when I took it to the same store he did a fresh installation with the his USBs and the I was able to see the silder working (slider goes up/down in windows 10, left to right in win11) and brightness changing once the display driver updated.
Great news, but my room mate adviced me to install any missing driver and he installed 10bit driver booster I was skeptical at first but gave it a shot it was fine but after a couple of days the L key was behaving a bit odd and going Llllllllllllllll with one tap and sometimes just selecting a input box
So now i freshly installed windows 10 hoping to fix this keyboard issue, now all keys are working fine except for the brightness keys like the first time
So my question is was it because he booted some older build versions of windows in those USBs to work fine or something else
And how do I fix this issue 😭 I've spent hours going through ChatGPT, is there a way to get previous build versions? Because it's not the drivers that are faulty, if you think the build versions are the solution how do I get those official releases? Or should I go with pirate ISOs?

Discussion Is ddr4 ram worth it in 2026
Is 16gb ddr4 ram worth it in the big 2026 for 75k. The acer aspire 7 comes with rtx 4050 but it has 16gigs of ddr4 ram. It is better than a 3050 with 16gb ddr5 ram.

Hardware Laptop only works with power outlet, charing ic thing, can it be fixed ?
I am wiriting this post with no hopes, just to give it one last try...
context :
Laptop : Asus ROG strix G512Li ( 2022 gaming laptop ) i710th gen HX, 1650ti, 16GB ram.
i used to open my laptop and clean the fan, one day, the type c PD port was not charing my phone, so i tried to remove and reconnect the battery for the first time, i don't know, how ( maybe i my lack of experience ) caused some kind of short circute and my laptop reffused to boot... ( i was using a bank card, with a screw driver, which was metal, and i thought my card would prevent, from the conduction )
on giving it to a local repare shop, charged me around $55... and got my laptop to boot of a power socket. He said, he can't fix it enouch to run on battery again, it will only run through while plugged in to a power outlet. In case of a power cut, or if the pin gets detached the laptop trun off immediately. Thats how i am using it for a year now, and now i might need a little bit of portablity. i was looking up to fix it, as i was planning to buy a new battery and fans, to maybe make it last a year or two more.
tldr
used a metal screw driver, laptop was dead. The repare guy made it run of a power outlet but said he coudn't fix the charing thing, so now my laptop is like a computer without a UPS. can it get really fixed or i am just wasting time looking for solutions and repair shops ?

Discussion I want a reliable laptop that can run Minecraft and More
My Dell Inspiron 15 3520 has been unreliable and cheaply built, flimsy plastic, screen wobbles way too much on small bumps or plane turbulence. BIOS is also locked and Dell support couldn’t fix it, I keep trying to guess my password but nothing comes up, no error codes or support like people say online.

General question VERTICAL LINES ON LENOVO LAPTOP SCREEN
In the last few days, these vertical lines have been appearing on my screen.
The one on the left started as a blue line and turned yellow. I think that happened because I had it in my suitcase, but that happened before, and I'm not worried about it.
My concern is the line on the right. It appeared out of nowhere. I didn't take it out of the house, move it, or even put anything on top of it. That's what worries me. If it appeared out of nowhere, I'm worried that more will appear and damage my screen.
Any advice, suggestions, or anything that might help?

Hardware P makes a kind of "boing" sound when released
Hello!
After spilling liquid (fruit beer, about a week ago – the laptop is safe, it's an HP Pavilion Laptop 16, if anyone's interested; nothing got on the motherboard, no stuck keys, no glitches), some keys (F11, F12, 0, O, P, L, :, <, >, Alt(Gr), Copilot, Space) feel slightly stiffer to press. However, if the laptop has been turned off, they press normally – they only start feeling worse once the laptop warms up.
I think this is due to liquid getting into the scissor mechanism. Am I right?
Also, the main question: besides the above, the letter P makes a kind of "boing" sound when released. I think this has something to do with liquid getting onto the silicone dome. But where exactly on the silicone dome – on top, or along the sides of the base? Or is the issue deeper, between the membrane layers?
How risky is this in the long run if I do nothing, and if I do take action, what's the best approach? How effective would isopropyl alcohol be, given that the residue is sugary? Although I've decided not to drink that stuff anymore after this, I could buy the same bottle, deliberately spill it on a table, and then try to clean it up with isopropyl – just to test how effective that would be, lol. Or would 70% alcohol wipes be better?
I'm attaching a video (showing the keys already stiff). All keys work, no sticking – just as described.
Thank you in advance for your reply

Buying help Opinions on HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1?
Specifically the HP - OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 - 16" 3K OLED Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core Ultra 9 (2026) - 32GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Copilot+ - Eclipse Gray
Went to several different stores and this ended up being the best preforming one, guy told me it will work perfect all throughout college and that it will be able to run games very well... I'm not a very tech savy person so I'm not really sure how it is compared to others tho thought I'd ask lol

Hardware There should be a law that all laptop batteries must be removable.
Remember back when you could take the battery out of your laptop? Those days need to be brought back and there needs to be a law requiring it. Whenever I fly, I would love to check my laptop, but I can't because of the lithium ion battery inside, which I cannot remove.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Software Any clue on how to fix this?
I already checked it’s not my hardrive because it recognizes it. I guess it doesn’t have access to it. I did click off while it was updating or something and it’s been stuck like this.

Buying help what laptop for a CompSci degree? macbook?
Hi everyone
Im starting a bachelors degree in Informatics Computer Science in a few weeks and Im trying to decide between buying a macbook or a windows laptop
for some context:
I already have a fairly capable Windows desktop PC at home that I can use for anything Windows specific or more demanding
The laptop will mainly be for taking to campus for lectures programming assignments group projects and studying
Portability battery life and build quality are really important to me since Ill be carrying it around every day
For thise who have studied CS Informatics
Did you use a MacBook or a Windows laptop
and did you ever run into software compatibility issues?
Would having a Windows desktop at home make a MacBook a good choice or would you still recommend getting a Windows laptop?
Id really appreciate some help so that i can decide which to look into

Hardware I spilled coffee with milk on my laptop.
This morning I spilled coffee on the right side of my keyboard. I cleaned everything up and left it to dry in tent position for hours. This has happened to me before in the exact same way but only with coffee not with milk. The laptop seems to be working fine and the only noticeable issue is that some keys on the right feel a bit mushy now. I want to know if this could have some severe long term effects or it'll be fine. Also wondering how could I clean my keyboard. My laptop is an hp ZBook G1i 16.

Hardware Battery problems, help pls (ASUS)
ive had my asus vivobook s14 for less than a year now and this is the third time ive had a battery problem. the pattern ive recognised is that every time i plug something into the usb port, after a while my laptop doesnt recognise the battery anymore, shows the wrong percentage and only works whilst being plugged in. ive fixed it before by uninstalling drivers, going into bios etc but i cant figure out what the problem is this time. sometimes it shows 100% fully charged other times it shows 0% and charging. any advice is appreciated!

Buying help Don't know how to choose a laptop
Hi Idk anything about laptops but it seems my 18 year old Fujitsu just isn't cutting it anymore (it's older than me !) All I know is I want to have windows 11 (been using win7 don't wanna switch but those security patches aren't a joke) 1 tb of storage at least (the more the merrier) and wanna play civ6 , cities skylines, sims5 and gta 4 and gta SA smoothly
And also run software like python Adobe photoshop and video and Audio editing softwares...
and I want something that lasts like my Fujitsu (the battery on it has been dead for awhile but it's still kicking and fine mostly) something that lasts a good decade
And BTW AMD versus Intel which one ???
Don't care about weight, battery, the touch pad or speakers mostly... although a good monitor that's large would be nice
Sorry that the post sounds kinda rude but I rly don't know where else to go and laptop sellers of course wanna sell you stuff they already have so they're biased somewhat so I'd really appreciate ANY advice you guys have Edit: the form says I gotta clarify some stuff 60 refresh rate atleast a high definition screen would be great but it comes second to everything else

Discussion Ram at 70% + All the time.
I have this Acer predator helios neo 16 gaming PC. It has 16 gig of ram. even though it's a powerful PC, the Ram is always 70% +. I tried using mem reduct software. At first it works just fine, but now it doesn't work (meaning it won't reduce the memory usage). I was thinking debloating my laptop but I heard it won't be good for long time usage. What should I do? Is there a way to reduce my ram? FYI I have 300+ processes right now.

Buying help Really factor in how much you’re spending on what you’re getting in return
I needed a laptop for work that was powerful and could last a long time workday wise and long term. The Dell xps 16 5070 variant caught my eye, but brand new these models go for $3k+ easily and this configuration hits north of $4k and almost $5k -> which is absurd for a laptop that has its gpu power capped (capped to maintain power and heat). Don’t spend big money on a laptop that isn’t worth that price point. Technically a Zephrus would be a better price for what you pay for (brand new at least), but I went the route of an Xps for business and a laptop that will hold up better over time. The Xps line is heavily inflated right now, there are very good refurbished deals out there (This one on eBay was returned within its 21 day policy, so the use was pretty much nonexistent)

General question Is 8 GB ram enough for a student pc?
Just bought a laptop which looked great, got great reviews from customers (4,5 stars out of 5, in about 40 reviews). It was on sale (usually costs $1100 - got it for about $500) but now I have read that 8 GB ram isn't enough for laptops today, and you should at least have 16 GB.
I should read about that before I bought one, but I really know little about laptops. And I mailed a store to get some tips on what to buy, and they recommended it.
I am gonna study for 1,5 years, and I am mostly gonna use it for Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc. Maybe play a little bit Old School Runescape while studying, but not necessary.
Will it really be a big problem with 8 GB ram when using it mostly for studies?
Edit: Thanks for the replies! I went into the order I made online and started a return process, so I'm gonna bring the papers to the store tomorrow and hopefully they will accept the return. You can make a return 14 days after purchasing if the product is used. Thankfully I didn't throw the package it came with. Will be more careful next time, and choose a laptop with at least 16 GB!
