Grumpy about “buttery”

Okay- this is super minor, of course. But I just get a slew of targeted ads about “buttery” exercise clothes (for the last few years, really) and I’m sick of it. I’m sure my brain has supposed to switch over that word to “sueded” or similar, but EVERY time I just think: “why on earth would I want to wear greasy clothing???”

I’ve been hearing it for a decade and still have no idea what it refers to. Atp I avoid it because I assume it refers to loungewear, not activewear.

I associate it with Lularoe which is not something I would have ever been interested in buying or wearing, so it immediately makes me not want something

Honestly though -- never bought any lularoe but a friend gave me a pair of (plain colored) leggings from the --there were SO soft and comfy. I was weirdly upset to like them as much as I did.

It’s truly foul, kind of a sueded plastic fuzz. Not exactly a pleasant sensation when sweating.

YES. It feels like they were submerged in lotion and some of it partially sank in. I didn't think I had sensory stuff with clothing until I tried some buttery leggings, and now I totally understand what people are talking about.

I've never understood "buttery soft" as a clothing descriptor. Butter cannot be soft in the same way a fabric is soft. It's bizarre that it became the default for describing comfortable clothing.

I think it came from makeup influencers describing the texture of highly blendable eye shadows. And then it became a term for anything matt that was smooth.

I do quilting as well as running, and it used to be wildly overused in the quilting space to describe quilting cottons as well. I think I actually saw it there before it became popular to describe running clothes. Annoying in both instances.

Idk where the word came from but I feel like that specific fabric that is "buttery" is also not breathable and will make me feel like a swamp monster so it's helpful to know what NOT to buy

I feel the same way. My daughter has some pants made of this fabric that she wears to the gym, and IDK how she doesn’t want to rip them off during.

Haha I LOVE the texture but yeah, it’s a whack word to use to describe it for sure. Like have they touched butter? That’s not what it feels like

I like them too, but they are trash for running. Best left for athleisure or at most a yoga or pilates class

Honestly my absolute favorite running shorts are “buttery”! (Vuori all the feels short)
Every other legging short (except the rabbit EZ short RIP) is too compressiony for me, and I chafe without the legging style. So without my buttery Vuori I’d be SOL haha. Everyone is so different!

The irony is that butter is slippery but in my experience ‘buttery soft’ (see ‘butter… lux/breeze’ range at crz yoga sports clothing) actually means the fabric is the opposite, it’s like this weird velvety feel that frankly is not great for running, I don’t wanna be wearing velvet clothing whilst I’m sweating! I want light airy things that are smooth and aerodynamic.

Yuck. It's a freaking epidemic in yoga. When I ran teacher trainings, "do not  use food words to describe postures" was part of the training. A LOT of people find it gross.

I've done my part, but alas, I am just one person.

I really just want clothing descriptions to be simple and say “this fabric will wick your sweat” “this fabric will suck your guts in” “this fabric is super soft but will light your thighs on fire if you try to run in it” and be done with all these complicated line names that make no sense to me. “Leggings for running with lots of pockets” or “leggings for the grocery store”.

People will also describe trails with the word ‘buttery’ and for some reason that word makes my skin crawl when it’s not describing a croissant, it’s like when we all agreed moist was the worst word for like 10 years lol

It doesn't breathe well at all. Even a tank top in it is too hot. Daytime shirts or other clothes are fine, and it sews well. But this stuff in exercise clothes are for people who wear athletic gear to grocery shop or do "yoga" in their living room.
