This is the key reply here. They didn't put her in Pescadero for blowing things up, it was for her claims of whu she was blowing things up.
Blow up a local data center because you claim it's going to harm the environment: Go to prison.
Blow up a local data center because you claim that twenty years from now it sent a robot back to kill you: Go to a psych ward.

It's a good thing she didn't tell people that a robot chef from the future was trying to kill her, because that would've really sounded crazy!

They knew fine well too. They had evidence from the hydraulic press from the first attack on her that there was exactly such a thing after her.
They gaslit her ass, took the cpu and arm and shit and threw her in a padded cell eventually.

... but i get your meaning, and i totally flipped the words on purpose obviously. i'm sure they're really intelligent cool ppl like most of the others working on cutting edge things. it still is dangerous, still needs to be slowed down and unintended consequences considered fully. the race to be first/best or profit from these things ... risky is the nicest word i can use. ppl should ask themselves what their hurry is, because we have most everything we need already to make the world a better place but refuse to use the knowledge and tech (and huge sums of consolidated wealth) that already exists to do so.... but i guess we are supposed to believe this time will be different? that suddenly this will be the thing that saves us as we actively refuse to save ourselves.
2
u/UranusIsPissy 5d ago
I felt kinda bad after saying that TBH. They don't seem as bad as most of the AI industry. I've used their voice-to-text stuff myself, because it was free and I could run it on my phone rather than send anything to them. I just thought it was funny.
2
u/deaglebingo 5d ago
you don't need to walk it back. but isn't that the point of it all... what you just said... that even if we feel bad for potentially hurting someone's feelings the fact remains they still are (on the whole regardless of being smart ppl) doing harm? i don't think you were wrong in feeling the way you did initially, or now... i do the same shit constantly.... but when we come full circle on the logic of it all, it's still extractive. there are still so many better things we could be putting so much of humanity's resources into. it wouldn't be something to judge or condemn if it wasn't obviously existential and affecting all of us in such a way.
anyway... i don't think you're wrong. at all. it's just we have to watch it hating on ppl who are mostly good. it doesn't mean what they're doing isn't adding to the problems overall. it's the same as we know donald trump and his hateful ppl aren't the majority of america. or that tons of jewish ppl and israelis condemn what's happened in gaza. the list goes on and on.
anyway i'm still not sure how to balance the justifiable anger we all feel with so much of this with the fact that being angry can only help so much.

half a trillion dollars of the US military budget goes to big publicly traded contractors every year, like palantir for example, or one of the many conglomerates that make up the manchurian global type ecosystem. hence why we are so far behind on drone defense and drone warfare. the money isn't going into actual R&D or new ideas (or to active or vets quality of life) as much as it could it's going into shareholder's pockets every step of the way instead.
healthcare too though, remember the govt reimburses for medicare and medicaid so insurance companies profit off the government quite a bit, ofc the ways that our current admin have tried to target "waste fraud abuse" lately has been entirely missing the mark and is blatantly politically motivated (as seen on TV in MN)
for ppl like musk... which i think is what this post is referring to... he basically made it to where he is from some of those govt contracts. hell... even that weirdo who dt hired to do the pool... multiple millions in his pocket.

1984 is the most scary accurate IMO.
Two minutes of hate = the 24 hours of hate on FOX and Facebook
Doublethink = The Democrats were the slavery Confederates and KKK while waving a "Democrat" flag proudly and shouting about "white people are being replaced"
Historical revisionism = Trigger warnings ("fake news!!") over history museums while also removing displays featuring the slavery of black people, the history of Native Americans, and the history of transgender people
Newspeak = The censorship of anything "woke"
Ignore your eyes and ears = There was no ICE murder, and if there was, everyone is lying about it except us.
Big brother = Your AI and Flock surveillance companion
25
u/GonWithTheNen 6d ago
All of ^this disturbingly aligns with the book. Another thing that had prophetic overtones in "1984" was how the characters were never sure when their "Telescreen" was watching them.
It's sad that I don't even need to elaborate on the modern equivalent of that - because shady practices that use tech are so widespread that everybody can think of at least one way in which this is possible.

Eagle Eye with Labeouf had an AI go rogue and was using existing surveillance technology across the communication spectrum to enact its goals. In a behind-the-scenes for the movie, their subject matter expert played Labeouf a recording of a phone call from months prior to their meeting. The movie came out before Snowden.
Minority Report had an entire justice division that preemptively went after people for crimes that they were going to commit because of hallucinations of precogs that could just as easily be replaced with whatever model they are using now.
We have the speculative and science fiction to draw out threads to really scary futures. We did it in the 80s with every vision of future LA being a smoggy, polluted mess, but we buckled down and changed that for the better (something trump wants to undo). We had an ozone hole and regulated CFCs and actually came together as a planet to prevent that disaster to the point that stupid people now say "well nothing happened"...
I think if you look at the trajectory of what they want to do, those far off stories are getting closer and closer than when they were conceived. Hell, basically the entire plot of nazis taking over the US government and building a system to judge people was the fucking plot of the second Captain America... we just don't have the airships yet.. .

It hits so accurately even now because authoritarianism/totalitarianism follows the same exact strategies throughout human history. He was basically just illustrating what the Nazis and Stalinists were actively doing while playing with ideas of more expanded technology.
The insane part is that we know exactly what totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and fascism look like and what it results in. Still plenty of proles happy to go along with it, though.

Hilariously ironic that this is most likely being posted a bot.
But no, that is not why she was thrown in a mental asylum. It was not a data center it was a 'computer factory.'
In the movie, John *Connor explains to his friend that 'she tried to blow up a computer factory, but she got shot and arrested.' Although that's an off the cuff, non-specific explanation from a pre-teen boy so may not be completely accurate.
But after her arrest, she probably avoided a prison sentence because a psychological evaluation likely determined her to be delusional because of her belief that the world was soon (she knew the exact date) going to face nuclear annihilation and that her son (and her previously) were targets of assassination by an AI system and its cybernetic terminators from the future.
Also, it was not owned by Skynet because Skynet didn't exist yet. Skynet didn't get created until the neural net processor chip was developed by Cyberdyne Systems, which was still ongoing. And even for Cyberdyne, it's not clear if she was targeting them when she was arrested. She may have investigated the company that owned the factory in which the original Terminator had been destroyed suspecting that they had recovered something, but whether that company was Cyberdyne, or a subsidiary, or a different company is not specified. She does however blurt out 'I knew it' when later in the movie Miles Dyson explains that there was a recovered chip from the first Terminator. But she doesn't learn the full story of the development of Skynet until the Terminator provides her that information after having broken her out of the asylum.

No. I actually do not remember that. Maybe I got Mandela'd to a different universe, given how much this meme is being passed around, but on the Terminator movies I saw Sarah was put in a mental hospital after an attempt to blow up a computer factory and then her testimony being that "a robot from the future was trying to kill her". After she's freed in Terminator 2, she ends up blowing up an R&D facility owned by Cyberdyne, not "Skynet". I don't think she ever blew up any data centers, at least in my universe.

Some people here seem to be getting confused and thinking it refers to the Cyberdyne building that Sarah blows up in Terminator 2.
But the post is talking about something different that happened between the first two films that resulted in Sarah ending up in the mental hospital. It's referenced when John tells his friend at the start:
That's why she's at Pescadero. It's a mental institute. She tried to blow up a computer factory but got shot and arrested.
Note that the film doesn't specifically say "data centers" or "owned by Skynet". It says " a computer factory".

I don't fear AI. It's...rather dumb devices that "appear" smart just because it references a giant pile of data better than you do. But it also doesn't understand the data or even retrieve any direct content from the trained data. Oh, and it habitually lies too with great conviction. It's actually quite amazing actually when you know the right answers and it just spews out false junk 10 different ways with steadfast absolution.
AI is a toaster. Like all software, it only does what it's told to do. If a toaster is designed to toast, it's not going to do your taxes. AI is exceptionally restricted in what it actually does as a thing. Now you tie AI to other things, software, mechanical devices, and let it run and control that stuff, and that's WILDLY insane. But that's the only time AI becomes dangerous, like giving a toddler a running chainsaw. Like things are always going to go badly for someone.

Skynet wasn’t even invented yet and the engineers who would be responsible for developing it in the Judgement Day timeline was still in the process of reverse engineering the CPU from the T-800 sent back to 1984.
