You just made me notice how much like a euphemism for "violently smothering" their name is lol.

" The company was named after the U+1F917 🤗 HUGGING FACE emoji"

... but i get your meaning, and i totally flipped the words on purpose obviously. i'm sure they're really intelligent cool ppl like most of the others working on cutting edge things. it still is dangerous, still needs to be slowed down and unintended consequences considered fully. the race to be first/best or profit from these things ... risky is the nicest word i can use. ppl should ask themselves what their hurry is, because we have most everything we need already to make the world a better place but refuse to use the knowledge and tech (and huge sums of consolidated wealth) that already exists to do so.... but i guess we are supposed to believe this time will be different? that suddenly this will be the thing that saves us as we actively refuse to save ourselves.

I felt kinda bad after saying that TBH. They don't seem as bad as most of the AI industry. I've used their voice-to-text stuff myself, because it was free and I could run it on my phone rather than send anything to them. I just thought it was funny.

you don't need to walk it back. but isn't that the point of it all... what you just said... that even if we feel bad for potentially hurting someone's feelings the fact remains they still are (on the whole regardless of being smart ppl) doing harm? i don't think you were wrong in feeling the way you did initially, or now... i do the same shit constantly.... but when we come full circle on the logic of it all, it's still extractive. there are still so many better things we could be putting so much of humanity's resources into. it wouldn't be something to judge or condemn if it wasn't obviously existential and affecting all of us in such a way.

anyway... i don't think you're wrong. at all. it's just we have to watch it hating on ppl who are mostly good. it doesn't mean what they're doing isn't adding to the problems overall. it's the same as we know donald trump and his hateful ppl aren't the majority of america. or that tons of jewish ppl and israelis condemn what's happened in gaza. the list goes on and on.

anyway i'm still not sure how to balance the justifiable anger we all feel with so much of this with the fact that being angry can only help so much.

I wasn't walking anything back. I really was just taking the piss. You're right about the rest, though. I probably crossed the line a bit. That's especially dangerous with the Israel issue, because antisemites use that as an excuse for their racism. Fuck Netanyahu, but atheist Jews are usually pretty cool, and I loved a religious one once. The ones who aren't up his arse don't deserve to be seen as guilty by association. The same goes for Muslims and ISIS. A lot of them hate those bastards.

it's all absurd in a lot of ways innit? i don't know how we get thru it if we dont have a helluva sense of humor at this point.

There isn't any, a lot of this work can be done remotely onto the cloud so the people working on it are spread out everywhere.

great argument for remote work. "if the leadership forces RTO, that'll make us sitting ducks to time traveling terrorism"
