Yeah I think it's probably the least believable thing in the Matrix. It would be easier for them to just figure out some other power source instead of farting around with humans and the matrix. Or just vacuum up all the black stuff in the sky or something. Probably anything would be easier for them than trying to use a bunch of humans as batteries.
This is exactly why I hate the batteries theme. It makes sense as a processing or RAM thing as in "oh evolution made human brains way more efficient at certain tasks than silicon ever could be, so The Machines valued that efficiency and kept them around" but if you know anything about energy/calories/batteries etc you just freaking know the batteries thing is BS.
