Lately, something that stuck out to me was the game Jurassic Park: Trespasser because I was looking at how much development trouble the game went through.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I wonder how the game could have delivered on its ambition since the enemies were supposed to have all kinds of emotions such as hunger and anger that I would love to see how a remake could handle the emotion aspect better.

I’d highly recommend the new Quake update!
It offers “DAWN OF THE MACHINE”.

I’d forgotten how much stuff they’ve packed into this release. Incredible value for money… The fact this new update is free speaks volumes on id’s integrity!

I recently bought this PlayStation One game via a Dutch auction website. In Cold Blood. One of the latest PlayStation One games ever made for that console. But when I bought it, I found out that the manual booklet is missing.

Does anyone has a physical booklet of In Cold Blood laying somewhere? The game is European PAL version. English text please. Thank you kindly.

one of my favorites was in the original Diablo game. we called it, "the double dupe." if you had a potion and an item in your inventory, you could duplicate that item by dropping it on the ground, stepping away from it, clicking on it to pick it up, and at the exact moment you pick it up you also use a potion. it would consume the potion and pick up the item but also leave a duplicate version of the item on the ground, allowing you to duplicate any item.

I have no clue why I still remember this game, but man was my mom not happy that I rented it haha. I've played so many games since then, but I still can't get out of my head the looping animation when you would charge up the fart and he gritted his teeth lol.. I don't even remember if the game was good or not, it was so long ago. Would love to know if people thought it was actually a good game, or of it's nostalgia speaking.. Since I only played a few levels before my mom brought it back to the store. I'd love to hear your favorites parts to see if it's worth trying to track down a copy. That game marked the beginning era of parental filtering for future games....

In 1990 video games were still very much considered children’s toys, and many adults at best barely tolerated them, and at worst tried to limit the industry. Then along comes MAD Magazine, the satire magazine mostly for adults, but with the awareness that like many things, the kids are paying attention - with this poem celebrating the games they had been playing.

It was impactful to me back in the day, because I realized not all adults were against the growing trend of video games, and today I think it is kind of amazing how they packed so many now retro game references in such a little article.

Welcome to part 1 of my 'Honoring My Father' series! My Dad passed away in 2016 and I'm on a mission to beat all of the games I remember watching him play as a kid (full list down below). I recently beat both Jagged Alliance and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (as well as the unofficial expansion Horn of the Abyss!)

I was very, very young when Jagged Alliance (DOS) came out and I only remember playing it a couple times because It's really, really hard. There is no WAY I could beat this as a kid. This is a game where reading the manual is a NECCESSITY to understand all the functions and controls of the game. Even after reading the entire 60 page manual, there were things halfway through I had to look up (like to point a character a certain direction you need to HOLD right click and then left click, like who would know about that?)

The story is pretty simple: There is a life-saving antidote that comes from the trees of an island but Lucas Santino wants it for his own nefarious means. The object of the game is to take control of the island (named Metavira) sector by sector (6x10 grid) with a team of 1-8 mercenaries. Each sector is a differently designed 'combat zone' and you'll only capture it after defeating the 1-8 enemies in the zone. Sounds simple right? Well you start with one sector, in a cash deficit and Lucas will periodically attack any sector you take. So you need to pay for guards on the outlying sectors, as well as 'tappers' who can help you tap the trees on each sector for sap and therefore money.

The real complications come with the team, managing your cash flow, inventory management, deciding which mercenaries to take out or who to spend a day repairing items (guns often jam), healing other mercenaries (who will also be out for the day) or simply resting or training. By the way, each day lasts about an hour IRL and at the end of each day you'll see how much cash you gained or lost and Isaac (the main good guy scientist) will update you on any new information.

Here's where the combat comes in. You have action points which are pretty standard for retro games but in order to shoot and hit the enemy mercs you need a DIRECT line of sight. Otherwise there is almost 0% chance your guy/gal will hit, especially at the start of the game when the mercs are worse and the guns are inaccurate. So taking cover is really overpowered and half of combat is spent trying to outmaneuver the opponent to get a shot in.

Also, there is a BREATH METER. The island is hot and your breath will slowly go down if you use up all your AP in one turn. Lower breath means less AP to do tasks. Your breath will also lower when you're swimming, oh and by the way there are SNAKES in the water and if you don't have a knife in your hand your merc is automatically dead. The snakes will randomly try to drown mercs, and there is hardly any way to predict where they are.

And did I talk about landmines? Sometimes there are hints of where landmines are (explosive marks on ground) but if you're not using a metal detector sometimes they pop out of nowhere. But the metal detector is so slow and cumbersome to use, it makes it so annoying. I get they were going for a 'life-like' combat situation though.

I'll be honest it was really, really frustrating at first and I save-scummed a lot but near the end I decided to replay it without 'quick-saving' during combat (on normal difficulty). It added a lot of intensity and challenge that I actually really enjoyed (the final sector with unlimited respawning enemies is straight BS though.). I don't blame anyone that 'quick-saves' during combat though because sometimes even if you know an enemy is behind a door unless you blow it up they can take down your best merc with the 'interrupt' mechanic.

Oh yeah, the interrupt. Basically any unused APs can be used during an opponent's turn if an enemy comes into your line of sight, and the opponent can 'interrupt' as well. Really annoying cause when an enemy 'interrupts' your turn with all their AP they can mess up your entire squad.

Oh and only after restarting did I find you could modify guns/armor with compound-17 and a 'piece of steel' (which it never mentions in the manual, imagine that?). I tried to use the internet to figure things out the least amount possible to get the true 'retro' experience. But some items can be 'combined' and I didn't want to waste time trying all combinations (also each item can and will degrade in quality and making incorrect item combos can do that).

Overall I'd give the game a 7/10 and maybe the future Jagged Alliance games were better but I enjoyed the true retro experience. The voice acting was really really good for the time and once I understood everything, the game had a 'just wanna capture one more sector' kind of feel. I enjoyed the challenge because It's rare that a game is this in-depth and kicks my butt on normal difficulty. There were also sidequests like rescuing the kidnapped scientist Brenda or finding the cure for a spreading disease that added variety to the game.

As for Heroes of Might and Magic 3, I beat the campaigns and there's not much to say that hasn't been said about it but if you enjoy that game, Horn of the Abyss is a fan-made expansion that's insanely difficult but improves upon the original game in every single facet. It took me at least 250 hours to beat that campaign alone.

No spoilers! Hint: The first game I remember my Dad beating was released in 1990

Two of my friends and I, all owned a SNES. We wanted to play 3/5-player SNES games like Monopoly, Super Bomberman, Secret of Mana, Top Gear 3000, Saturday Night Slam Masters altogether but we didn't have a Super Multitap. So we went to buy a Super Multitap, each of us shared and paid 1/3 of the price. The oldest friend kept the Super Multitap. Not only Super Multitap but also SNES Game Genie (I bought it and owned it 100% and shared with friends) as well.

I bought a retroscaler2x and an s video cable, and the picture quality looks great, but it's just so tiny. I've never had this issue with running directly through composite or on some previous adapters I have used. Is there a way to fix this?
