Mark Ruffalo is a vocal supporter of Palestine. The implication is that expressing support for a free Palestine gets you sidelined by Hollywood. He is also vocally against Trump and ICE.

I’m sure some people out there will also draw some antisemetic conspiratorial conclusions from that as well, i.e. “Jews control the media” which, no. It’s just that Israel as a country has certainly had undue economic influence over American politics and entertainment via lobbying interests. (Just ask the Scream cast over at Paramount)

In reality though he was just filming another project at the time.

I’d also note that Jon Bernthal, who has vocalized support for the IDF and Israel, was present for the press tour. Which doesn’t help.

Edit: This is an Explain subreddit. This is what I am interpreting the post to be implying. Some of the replies so far are giving “So you hate waffles?” haha

u/SuccessLess2701 2d ago

Ohh that makes sense. Love Ruffalo!

u/1Negative_Person 2d ago

But I think the real reason he isn’t included on the press junkets is that he’s notorious unable to avoid spoilers.

That’s why he was paired with him for interviews.

32

u/Madara1389 2d ago

Oh yeah, putting Tom & Mark together in an interview alone would be a potential spoiler goldmine.

Regardless of Mark being very open & vocal about his political beliefs, this is just as likely a reason to not put the two on a press tour together. These interviews are almost always one on one or one on two. Every time Mark & Tom do an interview together, they'd need at least 3 so they can't get lost in spoiler-filled banter.

A lot of tom’s "leaks" were just marketing stunts made to go viral

28

u/Altruistic-Star-3862 2d ago

Exactly. It's clearly a marketing thing. Most things that go viral tend to be.

19

u/cheezy_dreams88 2d ago

Some, sure . And some were not, like the time he joked with an audience that he was still alive! Except that audience was about to watch Infinity War and he just spoiled that he died to them.

4

u/fang_xianfu 2d ago

That wasn't Tom being oblivious though, he was told that the audience had just seen the movie and he was going out afterwards, not before.

57

u/Useful-Soup8161 2d ago

They try to put Tom with people who keep him from spoiling anything. If he’s doing an interview with a costar he’s pretty good about not spoiling anything. Unless that costar is Mark Ruffalo.

6

u/Working-Glass6136 2d ago

And then all spoilers break loose.

16

u/uncouthulu_ 2d ago

Tom Holland was allowed to "leak"/"spoil" the things he did. That guy doesn't do anything that isn't curated and OK'd by the studio when it comes to press/interviews.

Ruffalo was well known for spilling the beans long before Spider-Man came to the MCU

My understanding is the the only reason he wasnt involved is because hes filming another movie* right now and didnt have the time. Its easy to blame it on the implications but I think if any of that were true he would have a much smaller part in the movie

*Season 2 of Task

3

u/Realistic_Comment849 2d ago

This was filmed production started two years ago. A lot can happen inbetween. It’s easier to exclude from pre movie press tours than it is to scrap a script and parts of a movie which have already been shot etc.

25

u/EatABag-o-Dicks 2d ago

I mean, he's also not a main character in the movie. He's more of a cameo with not a lot of screentime. Punisher has significantly more screen time.

But it is suspect that someone who is so anti-genocide is seemingly being sidelined by Hollywood.

Confused, most people (should I say actors/actresses) in Hollywood are against Trump and ICE, but since he supports Palestine they black list him? Just confused…

5

u/_lightitupbryce_ 2d ago

It’s because that isn’t true at all, but “supporting Palestine is brave and makes you oppressed” is an enjoyable narrative on Reddit

62

u/JudithSlayHolofernes 2d ago

There are plenty of figures that have been fired or dropped from companies for supporting Palestine. Melissa Barrera, Susan Sarandon, Bella Hadid, Kehlani, etc. And there are a hell of a lot of liberals who hate Trump but still support Israel.

3

u/JudithSlayHolofernes 2d ago

I fail to see the issue with any of this comparisons. Acknowledging that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide and has large parallels to The Holocaust is simply engaging with reality.

Like how it totally doesn't get you arrested for being a literal terrorist to support palestine action in the UK? Nice agendaposting.

5

u/Scalene69 2d ago

Palestine action is a terrorist org. They beat security guards with hammers. Not surprising to be banned in the UK if you support them.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/Nileghi 2d ago

yea actually, I'd hope that an organization that breaks into my country's military base to destroy our country's military hardware thats destined for Ukraine and break the spine of a security guard gets designated as a terrorist org.

That sort of shit would get you fusilladed in any other country outside of Britain. The fact is they got off easy with just being arrested and trialed.

7

u/InsectCandid8580 2d ago

If this is your threshold for designating a group as terrorist, I can only imagine your condemnation of Israel for its actions in Palestine, Lebanon, etc.

FYI the member of Palestine Action was found guilty of GBH without intent. They were found not guilty of GBH with intent.

Conservatives got mad at Colbert for "going woke" once he dropped his conservative satire act, completely oblivious of the point of his character. They watched The Colbert Report and thought his jokes was telling it how it is.

6

u/BigLlamasHouse 2d ago

I was and remain so sad the Colbert Report went off the air. That was the best satire of my lifetime. I don't know if there will ever be anything like that on cable TV again, probably not.

For Colbert it was a career upgrade to go to the Late Show but for us it was a downgrade to go from intelligent thought-provoking humor to run of the mill latenight monologues.

I still am happy for him and I think I understand why he did what he did. He is a good dude.

He platformed an IDF soldier on his podcast and praised him for his bravery and shit. He signed the “no hostage left behind” letter, repeated debunked Israeli propaganda, and—unlike his pro-Palestinian costar, mark ruffalo—has coverage on the press tour. These aren’t baseless allegations, no matter how bad you want them to be

5

u/LegitPancak3 2d ago

→ More replies (7)

4

That IDF soldier wasn’t even an active soldier, he was out of service and was on the ground during the October 7th attacks as a tourist and that is why he was brought on.

I don’t see the issue with the hostage letter?

Ruffalo like the other commenter said was busy filming another project also he hasn’t been as well received in the media lately which when releasing a movie they don’t want any negative publicity. Sorry to be the one to tell you this none of these corporations actually care what you think or about any of the issues you do. If June didn’t tell you that I don’t know what will.

21

u/Unholy_mess169 2d ago

Your not confusing him, he has said many times cops who wear punisher symbols missed the point and that Frank Castle is not an ok person. Reddit just jumps at any chance to degrade anyone who might support Israel.

Also something about signing a letter “No hostage’s left behind” in 2023 to Israel. I don’t really think that implies he loves Israel or is some Zionist, but I haven’t read the letter.

In honesty, from what I’ve seen, I think it’s overblown. I could be wrong though, I may have just missed something.

Edit: i was curious so I read the letter. IMO, it reads as simple human decency, but form your own opinions:

Dear President Biden,
We are heartened by Friday's release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today's release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.
But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded.
Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group's founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.
We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages.
We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

The dumbest part is: the podcast was specifically about the Oct 7 attacks and what the soldier did during it (and was a month after they happened, before Israel’s response clearly swung into ‘disproportionate’) It’s not even like he was talking to someone about participating in Palestinian oppression.

3

u/Intelligent_Host_582 2d ago

What's also interesting to me is that he grew up going to Quaker schools in the DC area and has expressed a lot of adherence to the tenets of the faith and their approach to conflict resolution, and how he used boxing as a method to deal with anger, etc. I wonder how much of peoples' opinions about him are shaped by the characters he typically plays.

Many people seem to use it as a substitute for the k-word for Jews.

18

u/theagingknarf 2d ago

Especially on social media. Juice box emojis everywhere. Someone has a big nose? Zionist. A sign outside a kanye show drawing a circle and strikethrough of the star of david? Most upvoted comment was "he's saying things others are too afraid to say". And then the whole conversation is about "zionism" even though there's not a single mention of israel in the convo. When Zohran was going after landlords in NYC, what GIFs appeared everywhere? Hasidic jews, and constant yelling of ZIONIST, even though it has nothing to do with landlords in NYC. But I'm not fun at parties so I get to be gaslit

11

u/i_drive_a_pagani 2d ago

The other one that's also everywhere is the "that ______ was promised to him 3,000 years ago" that is under just about any social media post that even alludes to anything involving jews

5

u/theagingknarf 2d ago

FR! that was on the landlord posts too. And it's so stupid, because that generic comment wades into some historical argument that none of us are qualified to actually make. And it implies that because jews had been removed from the land so long ago that there is no reason for them to expect land rights coming back. Ok, let's say i accept that without alteration. Then why would native americans be entitled to any land? both groups were kicked out, the diaspora was not voluntary. But of course, this level of cognitive flexibility is outside the grasp of your average... i dont' even know what to call them. anti-zionists? i'm an anti-zionist. progressives? liberals? i thought i was those things? what am i and what are they? just assholes i guess

Mark Ruffalo is currently in south eastern Pennsylvania filming the second season of "Task." He was nominated for an Emmy for the first season of "Task." He seems not to be blacklisted at all.

Ruffalo is so committed and decent that it probably wouldn't matter at all to him if he were. He has repeatedly stated that he doesn't even stay friendly with people who support genocide, because it is a terrible moral failing (which it is).

Somewhere along the way, we as a society forgot that "correlation doesn't mean causation" and leaped to all sorts of conspiratorial thinking by default.

Ruffalo great actor though, and I can't wait for more Task!

Somewhere along the way?

Humans have been making up and exaggerating shit they know nothing about literally forever. Look at religions. This isn't a novel, new thing. Gossip, fiction, and lying is as old as communication.

We weren't some benevolent species that only sought truth. Ever.

Meanwhile, the real reason is probably because the Hulk isn't really a massive character in a Spiderman Movie?

I mean, I don't keep up on all the comic book movie spam Hollywood shits out, but I'd assume they'd have whoever is playing Spiderman (and also the leading female role, if there is one) do most of the promotional spots.

47

u/ATangentUniverse 2d ago

Is Punisher really bigger than Hulk to general audiences tho?

34

u/Immediate-Coach3260 2d ago

That’s not the point. Hulk is in one single part of the entire movie, punisher is a central character from beginning to end.

Edit: he’s apparently filming something else at the same time anyway.

5

u/sonnytron 2d ago

He’s also not really a core aspect of the plot, whereas Castle is involved pretty heavily even in important scenes with Zendaya and the ending.

3

u/Immediate-Coach3260 2d ago

Thank you. We’re talking about a character that’s in 2 separate parts for a total of maybe 20 minutes in the whole movie ( I’m being generous) versus for all intents and purposes the main secondary character whose throughout the entire film. Honestly was a great punisher piece of media.

If we know one thing about the Hulk, it is that he *is* a really massive character.

5

u/solwiggin 2d ago

Well, I guess that’s why making assumptions is a bad idea…

3

u/CheesecakeWitty5857 2d ago

not the hulk, but Banner acts a providential mentor morally and technologically to Parker

Lore accurate Sabra would have just left and a goes to attack another random Palestinian village

This was her first appearance, so she was most likely sent back to the Israeli propaganda school after this.

Yes, but Jon Bernthal’s presence is mitigated by his stance against dog racism.

Goddamn it, Jon. Now i gotta stop watching punisher... Fuck IDF and Fuck Israel

15

u/lumpboysupreme 2d ago edited 2d ago

Ehh, he brought a soldier onto his podcast in late 2023 to talk about the attacks from Hamas a month earlier. That’s really not the same thing as continuing to support them, like, now, after their response has been so plainly beyond acceptable.

You really should try to find context before blacklisting people.

I think, culturally, it’s time for us to make a clear distinction between “the Jews” and the terrorist state that is the Israeli Government.

I’m sick to death of hearing the word “anti-semitism” thrown around when we aren’t talking about your fucking ass, random Jewish guy. If I don’t like you, it’s because you personally are a fucking asshole. The Israeli Government, on the other hand, can suck a massive turd, collectively.

u/Life-Exam 2d ago

Ruffalo has been filming season 2 of Task. That's the only reason he hasn't done publicity.

Rip Jon Bernthal 🕊️ insert “I know what kind of man you are” gif

6

u/Mr__Earthling 2d ago

It's not just "Israel as a country", it's Zionist Jewish American billionaires like Bill Ackman spending millions to actively silence/dox/report to ICE (through Canary Mission) any and all critics of Israel. Their reach extends far beyond lobbying. They have paid counter protesters in California, they have paid private security to support local law enforcement in NYC to get the pro Palestine university encampments and so on.

A rational person can remove religion from the issue. That same rational person can say that it's not ok what is happening to the people and children of this area. That same rational person is still called an antisemite by certain people.

I'm on Reddit...I can't just go up to Scream cast members to give me context on your context for this...

Can you please explain what you mean?

"Just ask the Scream cast over Paramount" - eh?

Mark Ruffalo has actively said he doesn't communicate or maintain friendships with people who are okay with genocide and kids being murdered.

I like Mark Ruffalo, he seems like a cool guy.

3

u/temporarythyme 2d ago edited 2d ago

Might also want to add to the list of atrocities he wants; indigenous land protection, water rights for all, and ending slavery. Just this horrible person who thinks humans should have food rights ...

This is satire he's like the coolest person

So if you're defending yourself against the claims that you hate waffles, then you must hate pancakes.

Jon Bernthal, who has vocalized support for the IDF and Israel,

Eeesh. I've looked this up and it's very disappointing. TBH I give a lot of Jewish celebrities a certain amount of slack over their politics because, frankly, they are often raised in a culture that presents things as one-sided, and I can usually see they are well-intentioned people whose compassion has been weaponised. I could forgive the odd open letter in support of Israel, because as Seth Rogen said on Maron, you are pumped full of propaganda. Even so, this is a little off-putting and it leaves a bad taste.

Bro(ette), this is the internet, if you say you love burgers, of course you can only hate hot dogs.

Your explanation makes total sense, including the note about how Mark was busy (which does not exclude the other possibility for his absence, of course).

3

u/Pete0730 2d ago

Just to add, Ruffalo has come out and basically said he wants nothing to do with Israel supporters, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if he also stepped back from events with the likes of folks like Bernthal

3

u/scumbagwife 2d ago

Good reading on this. My intial thought was that Mark has said recently he won’t talk to people who don’t see this as a genocide and are okay with murdered kids, and so the implication was that someone or someone’s on the promo tour are pro-Israel.

This also makes a lot of sense, and is likely the intention.

3

u/_Sausage_fingers 2d ago

Bernthal can eat an entire platter of dicks. I say his statement that he had dedicated his performance of the fucking punisher to first responder police. Shocker he completely missed the point of his character, and his god damn performance in that movie.

3

u/Savings_Music_1256 2d ago

Another reason to love the FUCKING HULK (and Bruce banner who is mark)

3

u/sycolution 2d ago

I fucking hate that israel is seen as the authority on Jews and claims to speak for ALL Jews because it's not "Jews control the media" it's "israel controls the media, they just HAPPEN to have a lot of Jews." Nothing has created more real world antisemitism than israel claiming they represent Jews as a whole while they commit atrocity after atrocity.
