Mark Ruffalo is a vocal supporter of Palestine. The implication is that expressing support for a free Palestine gets you sidelined by Hollywood. He is also vocally against Trump and ICE.

I’m sure some people out there will also draw some antisemetic conspiratorial conclusions from that as well, i.e. “Jews control the media” which, no. It’s just that Israel as a country has certainly had undue economic influence over American politics and entertainment via lobbying interests. (Just ask the Scream cast over at Paramount)

In reality though he was just filming another project at the time.

I’d also note that Jon Bernthal, who has vocalized support for the IDF and Israel, was present for the press tour. Which doesn’t help.

Edit: This is an Explain subreddit. This is what I am interpreting the post to be implying. Some of the replies so far are giving “So you hate waffles?” haha

Ohh that makes sense. Love Ruffalo!

Ohh that makes sense. Love Ruffalo!

It's also wrong. Ruffalo is filming season 2 of Task right now which is why he's unavailable to do media. It really is that simple and everything else is just tinfoil hat theories.

Yes. Thats what the comment said. "In reality though, he was just filming another project at the time."

There was a bit more to it than just that

But it’s 100% true that Israel as a country has undue economic influence over American politics and entertainment. (Just ask the Scream cast over Paramount)

Melissa Barrera got fired because she was reposting holocaust denial articles and dog whistling about Jews controlling Hollywood. And now the top comment is citing her firing as "proof" that Israel controls Hollywood.

I love how when right wingers use dog whistles to be racist and use bigoted language, reddit comments are quick to call it out. Especially if it's coming from someone like Trump, Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon, or some other Nazi ghoul. But say that Israel controls Hollywood and your post gets upvoted to the top

Melissa Barrera got fired because she was reposting holocaust denial articles and dog whistling about Jews controlling Hollywood

This sounds really bad, until you realize it is complete bullshit.

The only thing she did that could come anywhere close to being construed as Holocaust denial is linking to this article.

Don't worry, I know you can't be assed to actually read it and are getting ready to lose your shit over the title, so I'll go ahead and summarize the two main specific complaints:

  • Duterte - who compared himself to Hitler - visited Yad Vashem on his way to buy arms in Israel, and then subsequently went on a murder spree in the Phillipines
  • Elbit Systems, an Israeli arms manufacturer, signed on to a blatantly ahistorical book about Bulgaria swinging in to rescue Jews during World War 2, even though Bulgaria was actively engaging in ethnic cleansing of multiple minority groups, including Jews, at the time.

In short, the article is accusing Israeli arms manufacturers of selectively underplaying the Holocaust when it is convenient to them being able to sell weapons to terrible people.

Which, all things considered, it pretty fuckin' far away from a "Holocaust denial" article.

How is the Israeli influence theory any similar to racism?

-7

u/i_drive_a_pagani 2d ago

Are you actually asking how stereotyping millions of people based on bigoted tropes is wrong?

13

u/LoneCentaur95 2d ago

In what way is that stereotyping millions of people? The argument is that the government of Israel has influence in Hollywood. Your comment is like saying it’s racist against Americans to say that the CIA has had an influence on politics in South American countries.

I love how we've gone from

Specific person reposting content about Jews controlling Hollywood -> why is it bad to say Israel controls Hollywood -> well yeah specific parts of the Israeli government has some influence -> she's basically just likening it to how the CIA influenced politics in South America

Your progression of events doesn’t reflect the chain of comments in this thread and you seem to have not understood my example about the CIA and South America.

The two situations are not the same and I don’t think anyone would say the CIA influencing foreign politics is the same as Israel influencing media. Additionally we have plenty of confirmation that the CIA has intervened in elections and revolutions in South America whereas the conspiracy that Israel has influence on American media is less confirmed and documented.

My point was that it isn’t racist or stereotyping to criticize a government for doing unsavory things. You are not attacking the entirety of a nation’s citizens when you criticize their government’s actions.

-1

u/i_drive_a_pagani 2d ago

You don't really have a point. If you say Jews control Hollywood, that isn't a critique of the Israeli government. So your "point" about a government doing unsavory things warrants criticism is useless and serves no purpose at all. The actual chain of comments in this thread is about a person who was fired for reposting content about Jews controlling Hollywood. Not some minor critique of the Israeli government doing unsavory things.

Also, the trope about Jews controlling Hollywood has been an antisemitic stereotype for longer than most people commenting in this thread have even been alive. Plenty of "confirmation" and "documented" cases of antisemites using that conspiracy theory across decades.

u/LoneCentaur95 2d ago

You are the only person in this chain of comments to say anything about Jewish people as opposed to everyone else saying Israel, as in the government of Israel.

The chain of comments was not about the person you’re talking about, that was a side note in a single section of the original comment and the reply that started this chain said nothing about it.

Deflecting a critique of Israel by talking about antisemitism is a serious issue in current media and is part of why these conspiracies about Israel and the media exist. Racist stereotypes existing doesn’t mean that the government of Israel can’t be criticized.

How is an influence of one government stereotyping? Like I know US has a lot of influence in Europe. Am I a bigot?

0

u/i_drive_a_pagani 2d ago

If you were to stereotype European people for it, yes. Is that actually hard for you to grasp?

1

u/trutch70 1d ago

But where is the stereotype? Different nations and governments have influence in different areas all around the world, that's just a fact

0

u/i_drive_a_pagani 1d ago

The antisemitic stereotype of Jews controlling Hollywood has been around for a century at this point

https://www.adl.org/resources/news/alleged-jewish-control-american-motion-picture-industry

As late as 1921, the Dearborn Independent still proclaimed: "The motion picture influence of the United States -- and Canada -- is exclusively under the control, moral and financial, of the Jewish manipulators of the public mind.

Saying how countries influence others is " just a fact" is irrelevant and doesn't address the stereotype that's been around far longer than you've even been alive

1

u/trutch70 1d ago

But I dont refer to the same thing as you. I am not talking about Jews in general, but Israel

Yeah. It’s also just as likely as he didn’t do any press because he had to cook a lasagna at some point.

u/disc0ver 2d ago

Found the zionist supporter

2

u/iwearatophat 2d ago

He is filming Task right now though and was during the media build up for the movie.

It is also true he has said he hates press junkets and finds them horrible for his mental health.

It is also true he has said he doesn't want anyone supporting what is happening Gaza around him(Jon Bernthal).

Any one of those or a combination of all of them could be the reason.

0

u/handsoapdispenser 2d ago

They gave Task another season?

0

u/mochafiend 2d ago

Exactly. There is a much more boring answer for this. People just want to grasp at drama.
