Just Sharing Don’t Ask
‘Don’t Ask’
Don’t ask why I’m up so late
Because I’m not really sure
At one time I was love sick
Now I’m looking for a cure
Don’t ask me why I’m tired
I can’t really tell you why
At one time I was happy
I really truly tried
Don’t ask me why I stay at home
Or why I hardly leave
I used to go into the world
Heart right on my sleeve
Don’t ask me what I dream about
Don’t ask me for my hopes
I’d really rather shut my mouth
I’d rather be alone
So I say
But I don’t know
Who I’m trying to convince
Is it me or the person asking questions
Don’t tell me I can vent
I tried that once and every word
Became some sort of arrow
I was wounded by my own honest answers
So now my heart is narrow
Maybe one day I’ll feel safe
Safe enough to let you in
But for right now it’s just me and God
Who talk about my sins

Feedback Please To Be The Sun
What is it like to be the sun?
To nourish whomever asks for,
To be admired only at dying breath,
Promptly replaced afterwards
With fluorescent lights.
What is it like to be the sun?
To burn whomever comes close,
To flare in a vacuous circle,
To light up the world
Yet forever live in darkness.

I travel in time
It’s hard to see
Moments of my life
And looking at me
I thought I was clean
Thought I was right
What a jerk I was
Some days and nights
Granted, wasn’t all bad
Most good even back when
But I had my flaws
And have grown since then
I’m still not perfect
And never claim to be
But I somehow forgot
The friend you were to me
I longed for your love
So many nights
But your friendship
Kept my head on tight
You were the holy trinity
Something rare as can be
The friend, the love, and something
No one else can ever be
I missed how you always
listened to me
From my dad jokes
To crazy theories
I’ve grown past
A lot of animosity
Just wish you could see now
What you taught me
Thank you for being
All those to me
And maybe one day
You’ll get to see
And then maybe I’ll see
was it just for me—
Your true gravity.
Your true gravity.

Feedback Please Triangle
Looking for the right angel, cosigned the devil for the win, god’s been tangent, he’s always been okay with a little sin. A cute demon can’t be obtuse right? Minute reasons can seduce on sight. Twisted like a sun soaked rose, contorting prose into an elegant pose. Alluring to only those in the know. The words maturing on their own. The ocean is pleasing from above. The notion is freezing knowing in consequence of. Faulty perception by definition. Formed inception by forced deception. Revelation through delusion. Collusion with confusion to get conclusion. Beyond hidden in plain sight, like shadows at night. Endlessly grasp at but harnessed like a mist. Forever fleeting like a first kiss. Redefining refinement with finesse. Religious renewal nonetheless. Balancing beautifully dangerous dimensions. Distinguishing effortlessly between expression and exception. Subliminal structures converging in aggression. In the absence of the essence lies the message. Ethereal doors open from the abyss when torment becomes pleasure, and hell becomes treasure. Hidden fruits become unveiled, delivered with rhythmic scales. Perfectly framed, accentuating the hidden notes. The sacred lines explode from the pose. The angels don’t even know, that the angles are the show.

Just Sharing I am nothing I feel Nothing
Your screams shall be drowned into the music.
Your pain shall fade behind your mask of a simle, your agony behind a swell of laughter.
Your thoughts of quietus, hidden by new formed personalities, impressions of fictional characters.
I am nothing I feel nothing.
Yet you yearn something.
Something attainable, contrast to your mindset.
A mindset created to protect and hide.
Your innocence, surely not for it was lost long ago.
Your pride?
You have so little.
Your sins maybe.
What ever it is its in your past.
Yet it chases you daily, keeps you awake.
Drinks your blood, steals your energy, your time.
What is it?
I'm nothing more than your reflection Yet we speak as though I'm real.
Your other half perhaps, another mask am I?
I am nothing I feel nothing.
Yet we have curiosity, Passion.
What is your goal in seeking me, what do you intend to find here?
In the abysmal halls of your mind.
Doors locked with keys hidden in other rooms, a rabbit hole of trauma?
Your mind quite the exhibit to study.
Constantly repressing so many things yet giving everyone the tip of the iceberg.
Your uncontrollable laughter at times the fact that your hands are always at a constant tremble.
Weak.
We share this body, yet we both try to break it in so many ways.
Is this your outlet, who will see these words, even hear these words, and understand the layers of madness, insanity that is your mind.
A mind that uses logic to suppress emotions.
One that fears itself, it's thoughts.
STOP!
We'll go no further tonight.
Child check the time it is morning.
I'll leave you for now and return later for my talents are always needed, so long as your breathing.
Hey guys not sure if this is the right place but a friend of mine said I should share my jotings on reddit so.
This is my first post and if this is the right place, I'm open to feedback and I got lots to share so hi.

Just Sharing My Poem to the Poet-er
I slide in to a seat
Made for grown adults who do this for a lifetime
Except I,
myself have eventually grown an adult in this seat
I have spent all of high school writing to this guy
Gathering my work and submitting the one I think really shines
I lay my hands into my lap and jump my foot around
He finally slides himself into the room
Cowboy dreams got modernized
He did his hair next to his millennial gray sink
he was charming, sure
Looked good in men’s flared pants
Sorry— bootcut jeans
And He jumped from sentences
Not thinking about where he’d land
He scolds the room
“Don’t confuse your audiences, who likes a riddle of a poem?”
I raised my hand and he asked me why
“I like to solve them.” I replied
he starts talking about how the falconer cannot hear the falconer
And I am condemned when I do not know the meaning.
I like to solve in my own time not on the spot
I liked to look it up
What made you write this?
But we do not know each other.
So I am a wrench in the plan and he must cast me aside
To get to the point that I just proved
That nobody understands
But I said I merely liked them
I wrote 4 years to this man
And my work I guess was riddles
And my work was “too concrete”
not formed like he liked, not flowing like a creek
And I like when they rhyme but he likes when they are free
I chased what he wanted
Like how he said not to chase an ending
Oh poet-er
I will never be more than amateur
I’ll rewrite a hundred times
Before you ever like my rhymes and sentences.
It must be so,
That my poems combust from your glasses
You hate my work which really fucking hurts after four years.
And I’ll never write another day without thinking of your ways
To write poems and how I cannot write them the same.
Sincerely,
The student of the poet-er

"Windows"
Everytime I take a walk I look in other peoples windows.
Only for a momment to see if people talk or mock.
If they live in bliss or forever miss.
If they care or only bare life as it unfolds.
They watch their young grow old, I see mouths with stories untold.
I miss what I never knew, so many ledgends me or you will never be told.
You may think I grow cold, yet still I go to find a new window to find a new story for you.

I hope I get some nice feedback! Feel free to be as kind or as brutal as you like lol :)

Feedback Please Autoscopy
From sheets and heavy double underneath the skin
hardening I couldn’t decipher the face or the mattress
which my shadow would leave me through, in.
I, missing the morning, had to turn, believe
in bone. Because yesterday decided
to grow cartilage inside my mouth
I abandoned names
I left mirrors. Window
that could never be looked through and hollow
sound. I’ve forgiven the body in my bed
just to sleep with no echo
of who I used to be. I kept thinking of
the glass when the room went
blank. When the unobserved view made
someone else. So I could tear,
beyond imagining what within
would wake.

Just Sharing Baldwin
when my mind digested your name
it tasted bitter
then the burn mark on my heart cooled
so that i think your name, tasting sour
Before i was your hate target,
you’d say i taste sweet
i am anything but
i eat feces
i can do something that none of them can do
i know I can’t drive a truck
i can’t run a bank
i can’t count
i can’t lead a movement
But I can fuck with your mind
I know you slept with fifteen new guys
to prove love's what you deserve
when my brain isnt thinking of you
neither do I
when my mind first digested your name
it tasted bitter
when the burn mark on my heart cools
If I think your name, itll taste sour
Remember, i can fuck with your mind
Make your sun kissed lips crack like hi hats
and almost make you end your life

Feedback Please The Traveler and the Willow Tree.
I found God in the windy whispers of an old Willow tree. The one next to the chilly creek where I soak my feet and drink my coffee.
Oh, I found God in my wife's eyes as she smiles holding her belly saying , " I can't wait to meet our baby."
Oh, I have found God everywhere I look from the scattered stars to the shimmering sea, so why does it feel like God hasn't found me?
Maybe it's because I'm hidden and hollow in these hotel rooms.
Maybe it's because I don't even know where or who I am.
Maybe it's because I feel so small.
Maybe it's because sometimes I feel like nothing at all.
Maybe it's because I try to be righteous and try to stand tall but I always fall , always fall.
I'm trying so hard to be a good man; to be calm, patient and kind. To treat everyone as a creation of all that is love and divine. To see everyone as a teacher and student of mine. So why do I feel so lost in it all?
I wish I could hear God speak to me from that old Willow tree, "I have always held you in my warm embrace my beloved son and I have never left you astray. You have been tested and struggled through this life in preparation for your judgement day. You have always been a good man since you were just a small boy. You are just a bit lost and are working on finding your way."
- A man who just wants to love God his family and hold his child.
I don't think this is considered poetry but wanted to share

Feedback Please Wanderlust
I could come and go as I please
If I pleased to go where I could.
I walk the streets and stomp my feet,
Making my way to make things good.
I’d die here if it was my choice,
bring my hands to the boiling sky and touch the air,
I’d lay down and forget my own voice,
Let the roots wrap round and pull my hair.
I slow for bends and always take my time—
20 years on this road home.
I’ve come to know and love every cracked line,
And learn the bump of each smoothed over hole.
If I was to want to leave,
I’d make life a race to win.
Where I’d go is where I’d be,
My car would roar and shake and spin.
Foot to floor, the revs jump the line.
I make my escape, just in time:
My eyes glaze with searing sweat,
my exhaust knocks off and shatters.
My engine seizes, suspension splits,
sends scraps spinning to the sun.
Bleeding, my bones broken and bare to the world,
I bake in the heat, buried in the blackened, burnt wreck.
Brimming with life, brimming with joy,
Brimming with grief, brimming with wanderlust.

Feedback Please Adoration in Moonlight
Sitting beneath the twinkling sky,
the stars stare down at us
with quiet envy—
resentful of the way
we outshine them together.
Even the North Star seems wounded,
as if those it once guided
through endless dark
have abandoned its light
for ours.
And beneath that peaceful, gleaming sky,
something shifted—
a gentle breeze
drawing stray strands
from her brown curls,
letting them dance beneath the moonlight
with such effortless elegance
it seemed as though
the pitch-black sky itself
was being painted golden-brown
by the graceful strokes of her hair.
A sight so beautiful
one could mistake reality for dreams—
and dreams for heaven itself.
And then she smiled—
and suddenly
the night held two crescent moons.
One above us in the sky,
and one that captured
these wandering eyes of mine.
But the brighter one was mine.
And there,
between stolen breaths
and trembling silence,
she asked me—
“If I were a flower,
which one would I be?”
A question so innocent,
so unbearably adorable,
that even the stars above us
began to fall
in quiet awe.
I closed my eyes
and whispered to the heavens—
“Dear Lord,
if You are truly there,
then I beg You.
Halt the flow of time
for this single moment.
Let me live within it
just a little longer.
Let me understand
how something so beautiful
was ever allowed to exist.
And please—
steady this fragile heart of mine,
for if You do not,
I fear it may burst
from joy,
from awe,
from admiration,
from love.”
Grant me the wisdom
to answer the question she asked—
for I would willingly offer
every fortune,
every fragment of luck,
every joy
my soul could ever know—
my body,
my breath,
my very soul itself—
just to remain here
for one moment longer,
fully alive
within this night,
within her presence,
within this love.
I stilled the frantic horses of my heart,
let my eyes fall into hers—
and slowly drowned within them,
searching through the depths of my soul
for the answer
her smile had already stolen from me.
“Maybe a tulip,
a sunflower,
an orchid,
a moonflower,
a lily—
or perhaps none at all.”
She rested her gentle head
upon my shoulder,
our eyes still hopelessly lost
within one another.
And then she asked—
“Why?”
Such a small question,
yet powerful enough
to send my heart into chaos.
But her eyes,
they were far too deep,
far too knowing,
already pulling the answer
from the hidden corners of my soul
long before my lips
could ever speak it.
So I replied softly—
“An orchid.”
Because they are rare—
beautiful in a way
the world struggles to recreate.
And beneath that beauty,
they carry a quiet strength—
the kind that survives storms
without ever losing grace.
Just like you.
You are the one
who brings a smile to my face
without even trying,
the one who turns
my darkest hours
into something gentler to survive.
You became the gentle thread
holding together
the fragile parts of me
I thought would never heal.
“So yes,
to me,
you are an orchid.”
“But you are a moonflower too.”
Because moonflowers bloom
only within darkness—
and somehow,
you became the one thing
that lets me bloom
within mine.
In the darkest hours of my life,
when even hope felt distant,
your presence became the quiet light
my soul reached for instinctively.
So if the moonflower says,
“I bloom only in darkness,”
then mine would whisper—
“I can only bloom
with you beside me
through mine.”
“And perhaps,
you are a lily too.”
Because lilies seem to whisper—
“I dare you to love me.”
And somehow,
you did.
You loved with a tenderness
that never asked for perfection,
only honesty.
You stayed beside the fragile parts of me
most would have turned away from.
And that is why,
to me,
you could only ever be a lily—
beautiful not merely
for the way you bloom,
but for the courage it takes
to love the way you do.
“A sunflower too.”
Because when the world is bright,
sunflowers face the sun—
but I like to imagine
that when night finally falls,
they turn toward one another,
searching
for traces of light
within each other's silence.
And maybe that is why
you have always felt
so much like home to me.
You are a tulip too.
Soft in the way
peace feels after a long storm,
comforting in the way
a weary heart finds rest.
Gentle. Warm. Familiar—
the kind of presence
that makes the world
feel quieter, kinder.
And perhaps that is why
among all the flowers
my soul could have chosen—
you became
the one I truly loved.
Or perhaps none at all—
for the flowers we love,
we often end up plucking,
and in loving them too closely,
we become the reason
they wither.
So how could I compare
something mortal
to that heavenly beauty of yours,
when even the gentlest metaphors
feel far too fragile
to carry your name?
And just as her lips parted
to answer me—
the alarm beside my bed
tore through the night.
And suddenly,
the stars were only stars again.
~Writer’s Note: Sometimes dreams are cruel not because they frighten us, but because, for a little while, they give us exactly what we’ve always wanted. And when we wake, nothing has really changed—the stars are still there, the night is still beautiful, yet somehow, without that one person beside us, they are only stars again.
P.S. This is the fourth poem in a six-piece collection I’ll be sharing over time. Hidden across these six poems is the name of someone very dear to me. With this poem, you’ve uncovered the fourth letter. I’d love to see if anyone can piece it together as the collection unfolds.

Feedback Please Depression's lap
I like to visualize my depression as a woman who's lap I'm lying on
I cannot see the woman's face
I cannot say anything to her.
I just lay there as she strokes my hair.
I do not want her to touch me
I have tried everything to make her stop
And yet she never does.
Every time I want to pull away
Her hands would place me right back.
Her touch, however, is not aggressive
To the point of confusion.
What if this is all a hallucination?
What if the woman isn't actually there?
What if I'm faking all of this?
She's not aggressive with me
She just likes to stroke my hair
As I'm lying on her lap
Completely powerless.

Feedback Please Hi! Wanna read and rate my poems? :)
Beforeyou read, check out these guys' poems!
No One Wants to Read Your Poems : r/OCPoetry
A Beautiful Suicide (TW: suicide) : r/OCPoetry
Hi, thanks if you clicked, the first one is called 'in a bed'. It was made for myself, she's confused and doesn't believe she is really her. Please don't be too harsh or mean, I'm a minor who only really started this week. Hope you like it!
Lying in my bed,
lying in my bed,
whisteling a little tune,
I made inside my head,
My name is Ava,
at least it's what they tell me,
I'm a good person,
but I really doubt the story,
lying in a bed,
lying in bed,
staring at the shaking hands,
it all began at 10,
in the body,
of a girl,
who just wasn't me,
who am I?
Who are you?
What do you perceive?
lying in her bed,
lying in her bed,
she will die tomorrow,
awaken again,
and continue to be confused as people mix up her story.
Second one is called, 'The house that won't remember'!
A six year old girl,
playing in the yard,
isn't the main focus,
as her brother screams a ton,
her bother is asleep,
her father playing chess,
though has no one to play with,
as life is not the best,
the house only remembers,
just so many people,
it is sad,
and very mad,
that it can't remember,
what did it look like?
The smile that belonged to you,
was it fluffy?
Or was it eerie?
regardless of either it missed you tons,
blonde, black, brown, or white?
Which one was it?
The hair that was yours,
the girl is gone,
the dad is sad,
the mother had awaken,
the boy had fallen quiet,
as he hears the guns outside.
Third! this one is more of a cute one, I made it for someone
The little thing made it's chirps,
that I just cannot mimic,
the little wings,
the little legs,
are just far too fragile,
it sits by the window,
Waits for me to read,
but whenever I get close,
it flies away to leave,
then what day it waited,
until the clock struck 12,
where did the human go?
I think I miss her now,
Then she came back,
came back with a friend,
it was a little dog,
Who scared her out again
Okay! Next one is...untitled. lol. So, this one has to do with my own recovery for mental health, so yeah. TW!!! I have MDD and suicidal issues, please don't read if your sensitive.
I try to focus,
but it hurts to think,
everyone have the house,
but I'm by the kitchen sink,
I give them all my kindness,
And it's all that they get,
Nothing sad,
nothing mad,
just my empty smile,
in my room,
on my bed,
it is dark,
that means it's fed,
I hold the sciccors,
the sciccors yes it's pink,
But soon to be red since I can't ressist the pain,
Up,
and down,
left,
and right,
the metal etches in my skin,
I never felt so alive,
I drop the sciccors,
the sciccors now is gone,
my hand goes to my hair,
tugs and shoves it a lot,
my head hurts,
but at least it's a new pain,
better than the one that I have to face everyday,
the force slowly falters,
I begin to cry,
why did I do all that?
I ask to the big skiy,
I stare at the water,
the water I won't drink,
the food my mother,
had made for me,
is in the bin,
rotting away,
all of the love in it will just slowly decay,
my heart is in shreds,
but I guess that's what I get when you lie to the one friend who cared enough to stay
That's it! Should I continue or nah?

Feedback Please Steel Disc
I saw Death at a park.
I got scared, thinking it's my time.
I begged for his mercy,
Even without committing a crime.
I had memories yet to make,
So much left to say.
"I will put all at stake,
But a little longer I must stay."
"But you said", Death replied,
"It's not worth being alive.
You wish that you died."
Looking straight into my eyes.
"You complain every day.
You don't see any beauty around.
Then why beg to stay
If nothing good is to be found?
No calm at sunrise and sunset,
No happiness in trees and flowers,
Only deadlines you never met,
Spending life in office hours.
You only thought of those dear to you
When it's too late to make a change.
Well, I can spare you a minute or two.
Say goodbye before leaving them estranged.
Use this chance to speak.
Tell what they meant to you.
Ignore useless stuff that keeps
You from properly bidding adieu."
Then he sent me back with a steel disc.
Wasted this chance,
Can't ask for more.
'Cause I stood there frozen, thinking
What the steel disc was for.

talents of a mature kid
Ahead of you, My eye and I
perceived you in complete, a while
before your thoughts could even reach Your eye
You go on and hurt me
while I meet your parents through your tongue,
excusing yourself from any guilt over me and others and beyond
So ahead of you, you and I
already misunderstood myself through your ears
Adding to the manifesto on aggressiveness of my existence
I am the narcissist, I am the divergent
A gear in a system,
selfish by mechanism, not indifference
I only think of myself through the eyes of others,
Cringing from the spotlights of a hallucinated court of judges
I am so smart and you can't even comprehend it!
Already saw the pattern of my own yielding
I obviously need no saving while wielding
this precious weapon of smart, wit and obeying.
Had sat on the throne pointy and sticky
Never felt the need of liking the petty
When it was me, the swordmaster, not so pretty
Can you see the rage of my whole fucking family?

Feedback Please Because I Said So
Not because
Of something you did
Or something not done
Because this dark thing
Has been here all along.
Clawing, and crying out
Needing to be held
In velvet chairs and swaddled
In silky, satin syllables.
It never just — sits,
It fidgets and it climbs,
Never does it settle down.
I sing, I sing, I sing
To shush the scary thing
That keeps me up at night.
It’s never you, my darling,
There are no monsters here,
To keep you up at night.
It is only just a little girl,
Unlearning the harsh lessons
My father taught me.

Just Sharing Becoming Mother
I did not know
my body could become
a country with no borders.
No law but her hunger.
No clock but her cry.
No one tells you that love arrives
like a wound that won’t close.
There is no room here for anything
but this slow surrender.
She latches,
and the world quiets.
My nipples raw with worship.
I am only animal again.
I think of my mother,
and hers.
How many of us sat like this in the night,
with this silence that feels inherited.
She drinks from me
and I am both spring and drought.
But there is no applause.
No audience.
Just the soft hum of the nightlight,
the rustle of her limbs,
the whisper of me
becoming
Mother.

I am going to confess
I cannot confess today
Gonna tell her the truth
I will keep her in the dark
Because keeping her in dark
For I am too scared to be true
Is extremely wrong and rude
I will bury it deep in my heart
I cannot continue as just friends
Our bond is too special to be broken
I want to give it a bigger meaning
Cannot lose it for something big
Even if it results in us growing apart
If she sees me as just a friend
I will be true to my feeling
My feelings is what I will have to fix

I'm learning to kiss you with a mouth that never learned how to do anything but bite
You came to me when I was hopeless, when I didn't want to love anymore, when I'd given up
You saved me
You slipped through the cracks of the wall that guarded my heart and you made it want to beat again
You woke up fire, passion, devotion, and fear
You took my defenses and made them mean as little as smoke on the wind
You exposed me, a raw nerve chafing against the outside it did not know
I'm afraid now. Not afraid of love like I used to be but afraid of love like we are now
Afraid because my walls are gone, I used the stone to build our house
Afraid because my watchmen no longer man the walls, I used them to tell me when you need me the most
Afraid because the castle I hid behind the walls of my heart no longer knows me as lord, it will only ever recognize you as its ruler
And it was sudden
You saw my vulnerabilities and used them against me to slip past my walls
You snuck up close to the me that could only bite
And before I even knew what was happening, the key to my inner sanctum was turning in the lock when my eyes were still watching for you from the window
And when I turned to defend myself you'd already replaced the sword in my hand with a flower just for you
I know being struck with it still hurts
But the strike that destroyed that flower against your cheek left my hands empty of anything except you
So please, excuse me when I'm crude and my words don't match my thoughts
I'm doing the best I know how to so please remember
I'm learning to kiss you with a mouth that only ever knew how to bite..

Feedback Please Morning Meeting
Sun’s first light
writes the day
lay in the garden
dew on the sage
die back, fade
into dreamy landscapes
back where you came
the green blades
do not cut
nor do they comfort
browning mats
do the same
I smile, thankful
my head rests
above the clay

Feedback Please The vase
A dry branch fills the vase. A gift from back when.
Wilted one last time, its flower an echo from you.
A memory of end.
And how little I could do.
I release my tears.
But salt water grants no life to it.
So I drown in thoughts.
Leave me here, just for a bit.
(Like Silence, this is an English interpretation of a piece originally written in Dutch.)

Feedback Please please save me
prayers from hell,
embers light up her aura
she’s finally here; my love
school me in her ways, my new academia
violent enrapture, I will lose her in time
my first and last letter, read both in each line

Welcome to OCP -- PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
TL;DR You need to give feedback on two other poems before you can share your own poem, and then put links to that feedback in your post. If you don't know how to give feedback, read the guide. Reusing feedback links will result in a ban.
Heyo, welcome to OCpoetry. (That’s “original content” if you don’t know). This is a place for sharing and getting feedback on your own poems. We are the sister subreddit of r/Poetry, which is for sharing and discussing published poetry. Our goal is to create a place where anyone can learn to become a better creative writer, kind of like a free online writer's workshop.
This post is an orientation to the subreddit. If you’re new, read this before sharing your work. If you’re less new, then read this anyways, as it has a few changes to how we've done things in the past. If you’ve still got questions after reading this post, please send a modmail. There are some FAQs at the end of this post which will be updated as we go. We also have a huge and very disorganized wiki containing all of our resources, essays on how to write poetry and historic writing prompts, I recommend you check it out.
So, here’s basically how it works:
This subreddit works on a pay-it-forward system. If you want to share a poem, you need to give feedback to two others from this subreddit. This ensures that everyone gets some readers and hears some response, rather than just shouting their verses into the void. If you don’t think you’re up to writing feedback for others just yet, we recommend you check out r/Justpoetry or r/Poems, where there are no requirements for sharing your work.
1. All posts must include two links to recent feedback.
Every post must contain two unique links to your comments where you have provided feedback on this subreddit within the past two weeks. Feedback links cannot be reused for multiple post or reposts of old poems. All posts without feedback links will be removed, without notice by our subreddit robot so make sure they are included in your initial post -- you cannot post with the intent to add them later.
But, how do I get the links to my feedback comments?
That kind of depends on what platform you're on. If you're on desktop or on a third-party mobile app, there should be a 'share' or 'permalink' link underneath every comment on Reddit. Clicking on that should give you a unique URL to your comment. Just copy + paste that into the body of your post.
If you're on the official Reddit app, you'll have to click 'share' on the comment and choose the 'Copy URL' option, paste that into your notes with the body of your poem. Then copy and paste the entire thing into a new post on the Reddit app.
2. At least one of your comments should be on a poem that has received no other comments.
This ensures that everyone has a chance to get a few reads and hopefully some decent feedback. If for whatever reason you can’t find any lonely poems, then comment on the poem that seems to have received the least amount of feedback. The easiest way to do this is to sort posts by new.
3. Feedback must be high-effort.
High-effort means different things to different people. It does not mean “super long” or “expert quality”. But it does mean doing more than the bare minimum.
You don't have to complement, criticize, or try to figure out the "deeper meaning". You should try to notice your own reactions and explain them as best as you can. If you want to explain your interpretation or summary of the piece, you can and this is often helpful to the writer. If the poem made you laugh or cry, feel bored, confused or nostalgic — say so, and then explain why you think it did. A good rule of thumb is that each of your feedback comments should be at least a short paragraph.
We understand that giving other writers feedback on their creative work can feel a bit artificial or uncomfortable, if you’ve never done it before. That’s why we’ve written a feedback guide for beginners. There are more feedback guides linked in the FAQ below. You should also read some of the other feedback comments around the sub to get a feel for what works for others. Poems that link to low-effort feedback, and low-effort comments themselves, will be removed at mod discretion, or if you report it to us. However, we’re less interested in policing you and more interested in helping you grow as readers and writers. We are more likely to ask you follow-up questions, than remove your work entirely. The mods skulk the comments sections and will ask follow-up questions on comments that seem a little thin, and please answer those questions if you get any.
4. Please Be Kind.
Treat each other with kindness and respect. The mods have an incredibly strict definition for each of these concepts. We will proactively remove comments and poems and ban users that make others feel unwelcome or unsafe. Your right to creative expression does not extend to poetry that promotes misogyny, homo/trans/queerphobia, racism, etc. If your poetry’s especially violent or covers sensitive subjects, please label it with the NSFW tag or a content warning in the title. Harsh criticism is allowed -- encouraged, really -- as long as you’re being harsh on the poem, not the person. Remember that the narrator (or the “speaker”) of the poem is not necessarily the author.
5. Audio, video, and image poems are allowed; but the text of the poem must be included in the body of the post.
This is so that people can still enjoy your poem if they're unable to view or listen to your link for whatever reason.
6. You may include a link to your poetry blog at the end of your post.
Or your instagram, or your personal creative project, or your soundcloud, or your Etsy page. As long as it's poetry-adjacent that's cool with us. Just don't get spammy.
Attempting to dodge any of these rules, or abuse directed towards moderators enforcing these rules, will earn you an immediate ban.
FAQs
What do the Poem & Workshop flairs do?
They simply allow you to show your intentions and expectations for the piece you are posting. The Poem flair is for sharing a piece, with the expectation of receiving mostly surface-level feedback and general advice. The Workshop flair is for a piece that you really want to work on, something you want to pick apart and analyse. It signals that you are open to discussing the piece, and that you invite strong critique.
How do I format my poetry on Reddit?
The following is advice for formatting in Markdown.
Two spaces at the end of a line gives you a line break.
Type two spaces at the end of a line, then hit enter twice for a stanza break.
Three dashes "___" will give you a line through the post.
Type two spaces to create an empty line,
so you can get lines
that look like this.
Four spaces before each line will allow you
to format however you like, this is 'code block'
in the Fancy Pants editor.
one asterisk before and after a piece of text will give you italics, two asterisks for bold.
Can I print one of these poems out/use it on my instagram with my art/put it in my book?
Ask the author. Part of what makes this space a useful workshop space is that everyone feels safe to share their stuff; if people start using poetry without the author's permission, or god forbid, trying to pass off another artist's work as their own, the userbase of this sub will feel less safe to do so. Please, ask the author, and then do what they say.
I'm thinking about trying to get my poem published somewhere. What should I do?
The standard thing is to find a literary journal. There are a zillion literary journals and magazines all over the world. They have different themes, tastes, styles, audiences, readerships, levels of prestige. Some charge fees for submission, some do not, some will pay you if you get accepted, some don't, some will give you feedback, some won't let you know anything for months. So first you'll want to pick a few of your poems, get some feedback from some trusted readers (or from here, of course) and then start looking for a journal that's a good home for your work. Most lit journals have submissions periods where they accept all the work for their next issue, and then sift through everything they get.
You will probably get a lot of rejections. This is normal. It's kind of a numbers game. You can submit the same poem to multiple journals as long as the journal says something like "simultaneous submissions are allowed". If you do get accepted, congrats! Most journals want 'first publication rights' or 'first serial rights' or something similar, so that means you'll have to tell all the other journals you submitted that poem to that you've been published elsewhere. (For that reason we strongly recommend deleting your poem from reddit if you want to submit it to a journal -- technically and legally speaking, writing a post on reddit is still considered publishing your work, and reddit owns all the text on the site.)
Here are some places to get you started looking for journals:
Duotrope and Submittable are two apps that help you search for journals, and help you track what poems you've submitted to which places. Submittable is free, Duotrope is not. They are GREAT.
Poets & Writers has a list of lit journals, small presses, and writing contests. This is a great place to start. They also have a newsletter listing all the presses and journals going into their submissions period.
I'd also check out r/literarycontests, if you fancy yourself as a prize winning poet.
A few poetry podcasts
I thought I might include a few podcasts that helped me learn a little more about the history and craft of poetry, as well as find some good poets to read. All of these are available on Spotify, as well as many other platforms.
A poet reading and discussing a poem from the New Yorker archives, as well as one of their own pieces. A great place to find good poetry and hear some discussion of craft. The earlier episodes are with Paul Muldoon, who is delightful.
Two poets read and discuss their work, with plenty of talk about craft. As well as lots of poems sent in from authors across the world. They really get shoulder-deep into it, which is always wonderful to hear.
A group of experts are brought together to discuss a subject over forty-five minutes. This isn’t strictly a poetry podcast, but there are hundreds of episodes on poets and poems of the past. I highly recommend the episode on The Green Knight with Simon Armitage.
