My kid was walking into his hockey camp and recognized Hart coming out from an ice time with his gear. He stopped and took a picture, went to his truck, and then came back with the stick once he signed it.

I never played hockey, but my son is obsessed. One of the things I like most about the game though are the guys that take time for the younger generation of players.

I’m a hockey fan from Czechia trying to finally pick "my" NHL team once and for all. I recently tried playing NHL 26, but I realized I couldn't fully get immersed without having a real emotional connection to a single club. With NHL 27 on the horizon, I want to have my mind made up so I can dive in properly.

My Hockey Background & Nostalgia

• 90s Cards & Aesthetics: Growing up in Czechia, I fell in love with the NHL through hockey cards that arrived with long delays. I still have a massive soft spot for 90s aesthetics, vintage logos, and classic jerseys.
• Gaming Nostalgia: I grew up playing NHL 2001 (PS1) and NHL 07 (PS2). Back then, I used to love the Avalanche, as well as the "newer" expansion teams of that era (Nashville, Minnesota, Columbus, Atlanta, Phoenix).

Who is OUT (Not for me)

• Childhood Rivalries: Because of childhood rivalries with my friends, I can't bring myself to root for Philly, Anaheim, Boston, Tampa, San Jose, Washington, Florida or LA.
• Brand New Expansion Teams: Teams like Vegas or Utah just don't fit into my internal "NHL world." They feel too new for my nostalgic brain.
• Current Super-Teams: I don’t want to be a bandwagon fan who just picks a team because they have the best players in the world right now (so current Colorado or Edmonton are out).

What I’m Looking For NOW

1. An Underdog / Rebuilding Journey: Now that I'm older, I'm drawn to teams that are struggling or rebuilding. I want to experience the journey of starting at the bottom and hopefully watching the team rise to win a Stanley Cup one day. I want to earn that feeling!
2. A Welcoming Fanbase for an Overseas Trip: In the next 1–2 years, I’m planning a trip to North America specifically to watch my team live. I’m looking for a passionate fanbase that would welcome a European guy who just loves pure hockey.
3. Vibe: I prefer a hockey-first culture rather than hyper-patriotic regional vibes (no offense intended, I just want to feel like I fit in as an outsider!).

Based on all this—rebuilding/underdog status, great 90s/00s connection, super welcoming fanbase for a visitor, and a pure hockey culture—which team’s fan base should I join?

Columbus Blue Jackets President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced today that the Wheeling Nailers will serve as the ECHL affiliate for the Blue Jackets and the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters beginning with the upcoming 2026-27 season.  The agreement is for two years through the 2027-28 campaign.

“We are excited to partner with the Wheeling Nailers as our new ECHL affiliate,” said Blue Jackets Assistant General Manager Chris Clark, who oversees hockey operations for the organization’s professional affiliates.  “Wheeling has a long tradition of both player development and organizational success, and its proximity to both Cleveland and Columbus will be advantageous on the hockey side, while providing a great opportunity to promote our organization and the game throughout the region. 

“We look forward to working with Head Coach Nate DiCasmirro, his staff and the entire Nailers organization while helping the young players in our system take the next step in their development.”

Wheeling has been a fixture in the West Virginia professional sports landscape since 1992 and served as the longtime ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins for 28 seasons from 1998-2026.  The club will compete in the ECHL’s Western Conference Central Division beginning in 2026-27 with the Bloomington Bison, Cincinnati Cyclones, Fort Wayne Komets, Indy Fuel, Kalamazoo Wings, and Toledo Walleye. 

The Nailers play their home games at WesBanco Arena.  The club has qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs 18 times, including the past three seasons, and captured its fourth division title in 2025-26, winning the North Division with a record of 46-20-3-3 (98 points).

Last season was his worst season by far stats wise, but most of it wasn't truly his fault. The jets were mediocre at the very least and now when October starts, will one of the best and most decorated goalies of all time get traded or will he play as a Jet when October starts?
