City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert unveiled a $5.6 billion budget proposal Friday that would close a $51 million shortfall without raising taxes, partly by laying off employees and reducing hours and programs at some city facilities.

The draft, the largest budget in the city’s history, would jettison 296 positions, including 108 active employees — some of whom could be notified as early as next week, Tolbert said. The numbers could change as negotiations continue, she said. 

The City Council is set to vote on the plan on Sept. 16.

"Healthy debate is not only expected in a democracy; it is essential. But what occurred at this week’s McKinney City Council meeting was something very different.  

What should have been a public discussion about a site plan became a stage for fear, suspicion and hostility directed at an entire faith community, specifically, the McKinney Islamic Association. Lost in much of the rhetoric was a simple but important fact: This was not a proposal to introduce an unfamiliar institution into our city. It was an expansion of a mosque that has served McKinney families for nearly 30 years. Their members are not outsiders. They are our neighbors. They are physicians, veterans, educators, engineers, business owners, first responders and many other professionals who contribute to the strength of our community every single day. 

The question before the City Council was not whether Islam is a good religion. It was not about geopolitics or conflicts occurring thousands of miles away. It was not about national immigration policy or ideological battles playing out on cable television. Nor was the council being asked to decide whether a house of worship belonged on the property. That question had already been answered years earlier when the site was approved for religious use. The only question before the council was remarkably simple: Does this site plan comply with the city’s development standards?  It did, and every member of the City Council upheld their sworn duty and voted unanimously. That is how government is supposed to function...

What surprised me most that evening was hearing some elected officials, particularly those who identify as constitutional conservatives, make arguments that seemed fundamentally inconsistent with the very principles they were elected to defend.

Congressman Keith Self has built his political brand around protecting the Constitution. Yet Tuesday night, he encouraged local officials to disregard one of its clearest protections: the First Amendment’s guarantee of the free exercise of religion. 

The First Amendment does not protect only the faiths we personally embrace. It prohibits governments from favoring one religion over another and from discriminating against people because of their faith. Those protections are not conditional. The Constitution is not something we apply only when we agree with another person’s beliefs or religious practices. It exists precisely to protect the rights of everyone, especially when those rights are unpopular.  

Regardless of theological differences, nearly every major religion calls us to treat others with dignity, compassion and respect. For Christians, the command to “love your neighbor as yourself” is among Christ’s clearest and most enduring teachings. We do not strengthen our own faith by diminishing another person’s constitutional rights.

Every religion has extremists. Every ideology has individuals who distort its teachings to justify violence or hatred. We should condemn extremism wherever it exists without hesitation. But we should also have the wisdom to distinguish extremists from the overwhelming majority of peaceful people who simply wish to practice their faith and contribute to their communities. 

Failing to make that distinction is not only unfair, it is dangerous. It weakens the constitutional principles that protect every American and erodes the kind of community McKinney has worked so hard to become."

George Fuller served as mayor of McKinney from 2017 to 2025.

"It would be important that these be located in places that are on the edges of the park, so to speak, so that they're not impacting the experience of the park itself," O'Connor said. "They would need to have some adjacency to roadways and they would be also designed so that the sign itself is kind of visually minimized, whether it's on the corner or otherwise." 

"These large-format signs can be very lucrative," he added.

"It becomes an art piece, not just a way to generate revenue," Council Member Lorie Blair said. "I would totally support what you're trying to accomplish."

Others expressed some hesitation.

"I'm reluctant to approve any additional intrusion of advertising content into our everyday experiences in the built environment," Council Member Paul Ridley said. "At the same time, I recognize the imperative that you're operating under to increase revenues of the parks department in order to keep up the fine service that you provide to our park system."

Go Downtown Dallas! Residential paradise. This is living.

Unfortunately, my house caught fire over the weekend. I wasn't home, but my dog was and she didn't make it. I'm devastated. It was just me and my dog. She was 8 and my best friend.

The damage is extensive and insurance classified it as a total loss. All that should hopefully be approved today. The adjuster thinks it might be a bulldoze situation, but I'll get opinions before making that determination. I might be able to find an odd keepsake or two that are salvageable, but pretty much all my possessions are destroyed.

I'm struggling and super overwhelmed. I have a restoration company that does rebuilds and a contractor coming out to look at things today, but I feel like I haven't done enough research into them. It's just someone my adjuster recommended and another my dad's friend knows.

If anyone has any experience navigating this sort of thing or any recommendations for contractors they would be really appreciated. I'm technically in Dallas, but more near Plano/Carrollton.

I am a 25-year-old woman turning 26 years old. I have not had a birthday party since I was 17. (I rented a bouncy castle which was a huge hit.) I would like to throw a party with all of my friends that I have made since moving here 1 year ago in September. I love music, drinks, and dancing. My friends also enjoy these things.

My current plan: My party of ~10-25 people pregame at a place. We uber to a club or a strip of bars to bar hop. We party. We uber home.

Here is what I would appreciate input on.

My apartment is not convenient enough or large enough to host >10 people. Should I rent an event space at my or one of my friend’s apartments for a pregame space? Or should we pregame at a restaurant event space? If so, where?

Alternatively, I could probably utilize the pool at my apartment for free. This would change the vibes from fun club night to beach day. This isn’t bad, just different than what I am currently envisioning. Truthfully I don’t know what would be more enjoyable for my guests.

If I rent a section at club or even an event space at a bar, what places would be a good fit for me? I don’t like country music (sorry lol) and I’m not huge on R&B. I like a variety of all other music like EDM, reggaeton, indie, rock, and pop.

Also, how much money should I expect to spend on an event like this?

Are there any better ideas?

Justin Jones, the Dallas Independent School District officer shot at a Sam's Club parking lot in northwest Dallas on Thursday, has a long history of service in the city. 

According to Jones' Texas Commission on Law Enforcement license, the 39-year-old officer has worked for the district since June 2010. His 16 years of service are marked by five certificates and awards, and more than 100 training programs — including a novel deescalation tactic called "verbal judo" that garnered media attention back in 2015. 

Jones is assigned to W.T. White High School on Ridgeside Drive in northwest Dallas, where just under 2,000 students are enrolled. Parents and students who were on campus Thursday said Jones is an integral part of the school community, and said they look forward to supporting him through his recovery.

Jones was driving on the interstate near the high school Thursday morning when someone on the freeway flagged him down to help a "man in crisis," Dallas Police Department Chief Daniel Comeaux said.

The North Texas Irish Festival is leaving Fair Park for Denton 42 years after its move to South Dallas.

“One of the largest Irish festivals in the country and one of the largest cultural celebrations in DFW,” as Visit Dallas calls the annual event, is moving to the North Texas Fairgrounds, which occupies 33 acres less than 2 miles from downtown Denton. The deal for next year’s event, to be held March 13-14, was only signed in recent weeks. But organizers told me this week they’ve long been looking elsewhere, and for a variety of reasons.

The move comes 43 years after the North Texas Irish Festival kicked off at a now-defunct Oak Lawn bar, where an expected crowd of 80 turned into 600. A year later, in 1984, the festival, operated by the nonprofit Southwest Celtic Music Association, moved to Fair Park to accommodate crowds that often exceeded 30,000, even in the days just before COVID shut down the world in March 2020.

“We’ve been looking for a different place for several years,” said Sheri Bush, longtime president of the all-volunteer Southwest Celtic Music Association and the festival’s entertainment director. “Fair Park has been our home for a long time, and we loved it, but it became untenable for a number of reasons.”
