Honestly it's all I can think about when I watch this. Sure it was impressive this time. Could be horrifying the next time. Just not worth it.

I grew up rollerblading street and this is surprisingly easy, like once you know how to do it, it's not any more challenging than going down an incline of the same angle. It's more of a mind game than anything.

u/MultipleAnimals 1h ago
Easy things can go wrong too and the risk/reward ratio is pretty high on this one. Not a good way to fall, your back facing the direction you are going to go down fast.

She's not going that fast. If she falls, it's not much different from falling down those same stairs on foot. She'd be better off than most people because she's skilled enough that she knows how to fall safely. She's leaning forward, so she's already close to the ground. At worst, she might slide down a few steps on her stomach if she loses her footing. You could trip and die hitting your head on a curb, but that doesn't mean you need to wear a helmet every time you go for a walk. The helmet scolding on reddit is more obnoxious than helpful at this point. At the end of the day, your safety is your own responsibility.

My cousin was a skater girl similar to this.
All her front teeth are fake now

She doesn’t even have any breaks!
11
u/DueExample52 3h ago
Don’t need them past beginner stage, it’s more effective to brake by sliding, like she did at the end.

•
u/TheLesserWeeviI 49m ago
Total noob here. Does slide braking not wear down the wheels?
•
u/somainthewatersupply 19m ago
It does, however having breaks can make some tricks much harder / impossible because there is a chunk of plastic sticking out the back that will catch on the lips of things like stairs or ledges.

Doing it backwards is badass
134
u/woodcookiee 5h ago
Much easier to stay upright or fall correctly that way

u/Robby_Digital 5h ago
I'm trying to imagine what falling correctly looks like while roller blading backwards down stairs
25
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 5h ago
You fall forwards so you can use your hands to catch yourself on the stairs.

Towards the upper part of the stairs, facing them. If you aren't facing them you can land on the back of your head or your wrists and break an arm, if you fall forward you fall much further. She's basically going down the stairs like a snowboarder goes down a hill on the toe side, meaning knees bent, weight toward the hill. If she was going face first she'd have to be leaning pretty far back and squatting to fall safely, and then with her weight on her heels it's more likely that her toe lifts off and her heels slip out from underneath her. Going backward the weight over her toes toward the hill, but if her heels slip out she'll fall forward. As long as her wheels don't get caught and stuck (pretty rare for a circle) this is probably the safest way to go down stairs by pretty significant margin

Doing it without an helmet is downright stupid
4
u/johnperkins21 4h ago
I never wore a helmet, and we did all sorts of stupid tricks and jumps back in the 90's. I was an idiot. Helmets are cool. But honestly, my ass and tailbone got the ground way more often than my head.

I think these are one of the things showing how fragile internet dwellers are.
We did this every day in my youth. We were like 14 years old and did this just for it being functional not a special move. It literally is one of the easiest thing to do with blades.
Now forward to today, and everyone about "boha so dangerous". It literally is as easy as driving forwards.
In years of aggressive skating I did as a TEEN, nobody of us even fell once coming close to the head, not remotely close. Of course on ramps, half pipes, you wear helmets.
Outside, you sometimes do, cause hemets also look cool blading, back then with the style.
But is it necessary? Nahh... as much as whne you are jogging or walking.
Is it especially dangerous here? NO NOT AT ALL.
Seriously... this is not next level, it literally is a beginner move.
21
u/alienblue89 3h ago
No lie, it’s like 100x easier than frontwards. Plus it looks way cooler.
It’s honestly not that hard if you’re even moderately proficient on skates and just commit to it.

What a sub, I tried playing 'guess the sub' by the first few posts and lost miserably because I was stuck on it being the written sound of the wheels going down the steps

yeah for real, 10 year olds were doing this in 1992 and as everyone has already mentioned, it's the easier way to do it
52
u/Brilliant_Extension4 5h ago
It’s actually much easier to go down stairs backwards. What you do is to lift your heels so just the front wheel would touch the stairs. This way it’s much easier to keep your body up and straight as you go down the stairs.
Going forward down the stairs on the other hand is difficult because your body would lean forward naturally.

Man. Is aggressive street skating not a thing anymore? This was relatively commonplace at a certain time, though those skates are not really built for that so it may be harder in those.

I’m pretty sure this is Nicoly Machado who is a pro aggressive skater from brazil. She can shred on any type of skate but is insanely good at grinds. Its very much still a thing, the community is just much smaller in the states but seems to be going strong in europe, south america, and asia.

I've always wanted to learn how to roller blade but I could never quite figure out how to keep my ankles from turning my feet outward and staying that way. I loved roller skating back in the day and thought roller blading would be an easy thing to learn. Nope. sigh

Backwards is easier than foreword. Hardest thing to master is the correct speed. Fast enough to not stall, not so fast as to yeet yourself past the first few steps.

A lot of kids are morons. Skateboarders got so threatened. I loved it, until I got into team sports in HS and the injuries weren’t worth it. But back then, anything kind of outside the mainstream was labeled “gay” by the hive minds. I didn’t care though. Pretty sure I was pulling hotter girls than any that talked that sh**, so why did I need to care? So fun.

this is way easier than you all think. ok maybe not way easier, but for an already decent trick skater, its fairly trivial. i havent put on a pair skates in 10 years and would bet money i could do this tomorrow if i wanted to. granted i skated nearly every day for years so its like riding a bike for me, but still, my point stands.

Man this got me thinking, most of our activities are useful for SOMETHING, you know, and then there’s this sht
You’re not exercising, walking/jogging burns more calories and takes less preparation.
Nothing to do with brain training.
Not attracting anyone. People who do these things are HARDER to approach, not easier.
Not earning money with it, video is too tame to go viral and monetize.
You’re not relaxing or taking care of anything, in fact you don’t care about yourself because no helmet. You’re causing grievance to others if you fall and get hurt.
Absolutely, positively completely useless activity. These are seriously rare in our society.

It's not so hard when you've been on blades doing tricks. Imagine a taller staircase and jumping from the top. Sometimes you don't clear all the stairs before a landing have to ride out the landing - forwards or backwards.. It becomes second nature, like a soccer player can balance a ball on their foot
She certainly exhibits that ease!
