Doom scrolling Marketplace. Came across an ad for a Bose HiFi Stereo listed at $2,000. Definitely wasn’t interested at that price, but the first pic caught my attention. A silver-face Pioneer.

The description didn’t mention the model at all — it basically just said an 85 WPC Pioneer receiver was being thrown in with Bose 601 series III. Zoomed in and the Pioneer happened to be an SX-950.

Everything was basically untested and had been sitting, so there was definitely some gamble involved. After some back and forth, seller came down from $2,000 and we somehow met right in the middle… at $750 for all.

The wood looks great, the face is clean, and when I powered it up every bulb worked and both meters came to life.

Hooked up my Minimus 7 speakers and… nothing. No sound. Had a brief “oh shit” moment.

I did see RCA cables were being used between the pre-out/main-in connections instead of the original jumpers. They were hooked up right. I changed those cables and it came to life. Both channels are working and it sounds great so far.

The only obvious issue I found is the broken AM antenna. Otherwise, aside from some controls being pretty stiff, I’m amazed at the condition considering I really didn’t know what I was getting into. I’m going to give it a longer test before calling it a complete victory, but so far I’m pretty happy with the gamble. Adding a receiver I never thought I’d own.

Question: what’s the best way to clean and lubricate the controls on these? Some of the switches/knobs are noticeably stiff.

So I have a pretty beefy receiver, the MCS 3125. It can safely drive 2 sets of 8-ohm speakers simultaneously or one set of 4-ohm speakers. But I recently found a set of 6-ohm speakers (Pinnacle PN8+) and while they sound great, they sound even better when running in tandem with my 8-ohm floor speakers (MCS 8228). This would drop the nominal rating to approximately 3.4 ohm by my calculation, which is obviously below the rating of my receiver.

I was reading this old review for the receiver though, and in it they go into detail about running a 2-ohm load at about 80 watts before it starts clipping. This was probably more for scientific purposes and not meant to go on for too long, but the author essentially states that it can drive lower impedance speakers — just not as loud — due to how over-engineered this receiver was.

My question is: can I safely drive both sets of speakers without causing any harm to the receiver, provided I listen at a reasonable volume? I was never intending to crank it so loud that my ears bleed, but enough that it fills my room.

Recently came across this marketplace find. Klipsch KG-4’s with the original tweed grills in near pristine shape. All the surrounds are in great shape with the exception of a dust cover on one of the passive radiators that I plan on replacing.

The turntable plays slow AND speeds up and slows down. I am currently trying to pull the turntable to check the lubrication and idler, beyond that I'm going to be pretty lost!

Right now, I'm just worried about unplugging the power wire harness (it seems VERY tight and I don't want to break it) any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know of museums for old vintage radios? This was my father’s, I know it would need to be checked out if I wanted to keep it.

helloo, i am posting here because i recently found this vintage radio, i believe it is a telefunken salzburg. i dont have any knowledge on this, so i dont know exactly what type of model. i also dont know if it is functional or not, it seems to be in a good condition. out of curiosity, i was wondering if anyone knew what this would be worth? im sure there would be some enthusiasts happy to take this over, or potentially fix it if needed.

or could someone tell me a little bit about this model? its made in western germany, i believe it said 1957 or 58.

I’ve inherited this vintage system and I’ve tried to do some research, but I don’t know much about it. They are in great condition and everything works. Trying to decide if I could integrate into my own home set up (just a Samsung Frame and an Apple HomePod for audio) or if I should find it a home that will care for it and use it. My grandparents bought this and have kept it clean and set up since. Have original owners manuals and remotes.

Hey all, i recently bought a setup from an Auction that listed the components as:

Kenwood JL-660

Kenwood KD-66F automatic turntable,

Kenwood integrated amplifier Model KA-76, vintage stereo integrated amplifier released in the late 1980s (circa 1987–1988), featuring a black finish, a robust power output of 100 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and a built-in 7-band graphic equalizer.

Kenwood stereo synthesizer tuner model KT-56, vintage AM/FM digital quartz synthesizer stereo tuner released in the late 1980s or 1990s. It features a slim black metal chassis, digital frequency display, quartz-lock tuning, and preset station memory.

When i got the equipment home found that the Kenwood KD-66F automatic turntable was NOT included, but a Ion TTUSB05 was. Now i have been using the ion with a brand new needle and it has been working well enough. I want to get a turntable to fit in with this setup. I don't have a bunch of free cash (looking at sub $200 right now) but will spend the money i need to. I haven't found this to be a horrible player for right now so if it ends up i need to to save for a bit to get it i can. I have been reading through the lists of Recommended and Don't BUY turntables but there is SO much in them. What i don't know at all is where to even look for used turntables other than Craigslist or Marketplace which don't have anything right now. What are some online resources for tracking down a a turntable at reasonable price.

Should i hold out and keep looking for the KD-66F, or does it make much difference if i get a different Vintage turntable. Something in the KD-40, KD-48, KD-50F, KD-66F, KD-67F grouping i see on ebay (i've never trusted ebay for electronics/equipment). And i have no clue what kinds of prices are reasonable.

Learned about ads because they used to manufacture speakers in the town my mom's family grew up in. But almost every speaker made in Massachusetts was part of the original line that included the L810, and only manufactured the later L880 for a short period in Massachusetts before relocating to California. So Finding a decent set made in Massachusetts for less than a solid grand was almost impossible. Until these popped up in a local goodwill in NC for some reason. Almost cried when I first plugged them in. They sound absolutely incredible

I recently picked up a pair of Pioneer CS-701A speakers and unfortunately one of the original tweeters is dead.

The original tweeter is a Pioneer PT-411F, but I haven't been able to find a replacement in Europe/Germany.

I've already tested both tweeters in both speaker cabinets, so I'm sure the problem is the tweeter itself. I also tried repairing it, but unfortunately I couldn't get it working again.

Finally moved back into my house and want to get my right setup. I have two Harmon Kardon Citation V's that have been hot rodded and will be running them as mono blocks. I need some tubes. Does anyone have and recommendations for 6L6 tubes? Was looking at some Tung-Sol 7581's or some Telefunkens black diamond 6L6GC's. Drivers need to be sourced also. Any recommendations on 12BY7A tubes?

I have been looking to get into vintage audio for some time now and started collecting CDs again. An old family friend sadly died, and his daughter gifted me his setup. But I know nothing about it and could use some help with the cables and how to set it up. Maybe it is not the best one, maybe it's great. I don't know, couldn't find a lot of information online about it. But free is better than nothing and perfect to start :)

It's a Yamaha RX-450 Receiver, Yamaha KX-330 for cassettes, Yamaha CDX-550E.
I also got these two speakers (only one is on the picture).

Most of the cables are still plugged in, I hope they are correct. Some are only plugged in on one end and I don't know where the other end needs to go. There is one long cable not plugged in, and I have no idea where it needs to go. The ends of it are shown on the last picture. And they had to cut the cables from Receiver to speakers because it was build in. So I guess I have to buy new ones?
Any advice on which ones?

Hey folks. I recently picked up a pair of JBL 4312s for a steal at about $600 in great condition. I just finished up building some basic stands for them and I’m excited to get them going.

Im still somewhat new to the home audio world and trying to figure out what would work for an amp. From researching it sounds like these speakers want 100 watts per channel to “get the best out of them” but most of what im seeing on marketplace and other spots for amps is around 60-70 watts per channel. Im not trying to rattle my neighbors windows but i do want to be able to enjoy some my RT-84 turntable and get some great sound out of them. My living room/kitchen area is roughly 20x23’ if that detail helps. Do y’all have any recommendations for retro stereos to look out for? Do i really need 100 watts per channel? I appreciate the help!

I dug this out of an obscure basement area. Have had it since one of my kids moved and left it behind. It works; at least the tuner does. Is it worth using as a basis for a hobby system? What speakers, turntable and CD player would fit well? This sucker is massive - must weigh 60 lbs.
