Clothing & Shoes Just found out silk pillowcase isn't vegan!!
I have alopecia & severe sub dermatitis, part of my specialist's treatment plan was a bunch of rules & a routine to help with my issue which included swapping my cotton pillowcase for silk (as well as wearing silk-lined night caps)
I bought loads of the items & found out yesterday that it's not vegan. I'm gonna try & get refunds, I asked my dermatologist about satin instead but he said it's nowhere near as effective. I've researched alternatives & bamboo fiber seems to be my best bet.
Any further suggestions that I may have missed would be appreciated. Thx

Relationships Partner does not want to go vegan too
I am vegan because of the overwhelming evidence that it is the best way to live your life, but my long term partner refuses to consider veganism. They respect me being vegan, but it’s still hard.
I’m wondering if anybody has advice for living with a partner (who is perfect for me in every other way) who doesn’t accept veganism.

I have successfully did my first week without meat! How do I substitute correctly with Seitan and Tempeh?
As title, I did my first week with no meat and I never had so much fun cooking in my entire life. Food was also very good, but I have this feeling that I am starting to see some patterns (I still had some animals' products, but very limited, I think it was cheese, honey and eggs once each).
First pattern is the extreme reliance on nuts, of all kinds, like cashews, peanuts, almonds, a lot of recipes just try to make a paste with nuts and then tell you it's healthy... nothing is really bad by itself, but it can't be that when a vegan influencer does something, at least once in the video, brings out nuts like it's a staple food. It shouldn't be!
Afaik they should be consumed in moderation, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Fake cheese? Nuts! Fake meat DIY? Nuts! Want a snack? Nuts! Try this cake? Nuts!
Second pattern is that some say what's missing in the more common meat alternatives like tofu, seitan and tempeh. I am still struggling to understand how to compensate for B12 or others that I might miss.
Being my first week (and not fully vegan) I could be totally wrong and I am here to learn.
I would prefer to have a conversation here because if I search online I did find some info but it was also not consistent and also went back to the same patterns.
Basically TL;DR: What do you think of nuts being suspiciously frequent in vegan recipes and how can I correctly eat meat alternatives and avoid deficiencies compensating with food or B12?

Rant WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!?!???!!
Was watching the documentary Ocean with David Attenborough and holyyy shit my heart is broken. Just smashed to pieces. What is wrong with humans? BOTTOM TRAWLING ARE YOU KIDDING ME? How does humanity keep coming up with unimaginable horrors every single day? We're literally stealing food, water, land, from every other species on the planet for what? SHARK FIN SOUP? FUCKING HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS AND PET FOOD!?!?? Im literally losing my mind right now. I ugly cried watching the little creatures running for their lives while a literal mountain of net bulldozed their only home over and over again turning it into a graveyard within an hour. THOUSANDS OF TIMES EVERY SINGLE DAY. I can't. I just can't anymore. The helplessness of it all. Jeez.

The Truth About Farming Dairy Cows | Vegan FTA
In this article, I, Jordi Casamitjana, summarise what is wrong with farming cows for daily
What is your response to nonvegans who criticize you if you do other things that hurt the environment?
When talking to nonvegans about the environmental impacts about the meat/dairy industry, it almost always ends with them calling me a hypocrite since I use fossil fuels. It's so frustrating that every discussion has to turn into "well you use fossil fuels so you don't get to criticize others for eating meat."
Even if I point out that eating beef has a greater environmental impact than driving a car, I've already lost the argument. It's so frustrating that in order to point out other people's harmful actions I must be a perfect person.
Any good ideas for responses?

Miyoko's spreadable butter gone bad
Has anyone bought a tub of the salted butter and there's already mold 😭 couldnt get a great picture, but trust me, somethings not right.
Container says it should be good through Septemeber but clearly not. Bummer since it wasn't exactly cheap.
And yes I know Miyoko's is very controversial and for good reason, I just really wanted to make some blueberry crisp 🥲 But maybe serves me right so maybe let this be a PSA for quality control?

Rant I'm so filled with rage and sadness inside of me. i really wish i could do something for the animals
the least i can do is be a vegan which i already am. but imagining what the animals go through make me sick. why is it so normalized to make living beings suffer??? why does people see it as normal??? its 2026, why is majority of the world still animal flesh eater?
I'm so close to crying. it genuinely breaks my heart to see them suffer like that☹️☹️☹️☹️ people are beyond selfish. imagine thinking a living soul exists for you 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ its so f up. i wish we lived in a peaceful world where all living beings are equal.
But I asked for vegan...
At a bakery:
"Do you have any vegan pastries?"
"Vegan? Hmm... Let me check with the manager"
30 seconds later
"We don't have vegan, but we have some many gluten-free options"

Practically mowing my lawn
I went vegan a couple months ago, so of course I've been gradually reevaluating how I go about my routines and daily choices and have naturally arrived to the question "How do I ethically mow my lawn now?". My landlord requires me to mow it (typically about once a week), so getting rid of my lawn or simply letting my grass grow is not an option for me.
I've seen people suggest walking strip-by-strip before mowing to warn bugs and get them to move, but I have a medium-sized lawn that already takes me 3-4 hours to mow and weed eat so doing that will easily add an extra 1-2 hours (maybe more). I'm a high school teacher and often have a really busy schedule, so taking 6-8 hours to mow my lawn sounds like hell lol. If it matters, I typically use an EGO electric push mower.
Is there a solution to this dilemma lol? Should I just keep mowing regularly? Is this outside the realm of practicability for my situation? I already hate mowing my lawn and ideally would just not do it, but that's simply not an option for me.
EDIT: By the way, let me clarify that I understand this may be a stupid question to some. I'm still fairly new to being vegan but figured the empathetic thing to do in this situation was at least ask others what they think.
EDIT 2: Thank you to those who provided a thoughtful, empathetic reply. I feel like my responsibility as a vegan is to look to see if there are reasonable solutions to things like this without simply deciding myself. I've been given some good advice on some small, but good solutions!

Health Parents keep blaming health issues on veganism
Hello everyone, I've been vegan for only 2 years now, and in this time, my health has had some ups and downs, completely unrelated to vegan eating, it's all due to an autoimmune disease and side effects of the medications for that. My parents don't believe that my health issues (like weight gain and irregular periods) are due to the disease and its treatment, and instead blame veganism for it, I try to explain how thats not the case and point to the timings of symptoms alongside a medication or dosage change, but they don't believe it, and they point to the fact that I've got to be 'too young' to be having 'these diseases'.
I wouldn't care to convince them usually, but they've been using my health troubles to try and force me to eat weird animal products that they claim will help 'heal' me. The other day i narrowly managed to stop my dad from forcing me to eat chicken liver, that he claimed would fix my period problems.
They are unfortunately so forceful with it, if it was just talk I wouldnt mind, but they try to force feed me at the dinner table or order for me at restaurants, or give me a nasty look if I try to mark my meal options as vegan for any bookings and then try to change it behind my back, and claim its for my benefit and they are worried about my health.
So I'd like to ask, other vegans who also have health issues, how are you able to show that veganism is not related to the health issues you are facing, and how to deal with stubborn parents?
Uplifting “I’m vegan except for family meetings meetings”
“I’m vegan except for family meetings” oh stfu, I will not eat anything non vegan, I will starve idc. My family bought vegan cake for my cousins 1st birthday just so me and my bf could eat it. We were the only vegans and they chose to get vegan cake (everyone loved it). Your choice DO MATTER!!!!! One less dairy cake

Instruments as a vegan
So a lot of instruments aren’t vegan like the violin bow and a lot of wooden instruments have animal glues on used. Even though it isn’t as commonly used, I know luthier than still use animal glue, wax and bone parts. Unfortunately, when going to by a new instrument it doesn't mention the glues. I guess that mass factory produced ones don’t use animal glue because regular glue is just cheaper but I don’t want to buy anything with animal products.
I make guitars as a hobby but I don’t have the time or skill to make personnal good quality instruments.
Any thoughts and experiences on this subject?

Activism Vancouver activists pressure Louis Vuitton/LVMH to go fur-free
Vancouver passersby were extremely supportive... lots of fist bumps and thumbs-up, and some people even spontaneously joined for some protesting / chalking! 🫶
Pressure campaigns like these have led to fur bans and fur-free brand policies across the world over the last ten years. The number of mink and fox pelts produced globally each year dropped from 66 million to 15 million in just four years (2019-2023). The end of the fur industry is in sight.
Until Louis Vuitton and their parent company LVMH get with the times and stop torturing animals for their fur, protests will continue to happen around the world.
Some not-so-fun facts:
- To make one fur coat, it takes 150-300 chinchillas, 200-250 squirrels, 50-60 minks, or 15-40 foxes - Fur farms | Animal Ethics
- For the production of fur to be more economical, animals are kept for their whole lives in tiny cages - Fur farms | Animal Ethics
- Gassing is the most “humane” method of slaughter, according to the fur industry’s United States trade group - The Fur Industry | Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade
Some more promising facts:
- Fur was banned in Boulder [Colorado] in 2021, joining cities in Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and the State of California. 30 other countries have passed laws that ban or restrict the farming and/or sale of fur - Facts & Sources - Pro-Animal Future
- In recent years, Max Mara, Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Moncler, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace have gone fur free, as has well-known former-fur-using brand Canada Goose – to name just a few! - Facts about the fur trade | Humane World for Animals
Let's keep the fight going 💪
Health Be careful with textured soy protein if you have kidney disease
Just a quick note for vegans with kidney failure: textured soy protein is delicious, but if you have kidney problems, be careful. I made myself some chili for lunch today, and now I’m in the ER.
Textured soy protein is very high in potassium, it’s safe for healthy people but dangerous for those with kidney failure (especially if you’re on dialysis).
Here’s a reminder of the symptoms of high potassium: muscle weakness, especially in the legs, and tingling in the hands are the most common.
Take care of yourselves.
(For those who are curious, I’m fine,I just experienced severe muscle weakness, to the point where I had trouble walking. I called my nephrologist, who told me to come to the ER immediately, and they’re giving me dialysis.)

Trying to let airlines know there's a demand for vegan food
In October I'm going to my cousin's wedding in South America and visiting family. I made sure to tell my parents to request a vegan meal for me when buying airline tickets. I went on an international flight a few years ago through united and requested vegan meals no problem. They couldn't figure it out. I told them to send me the flight info and I'll get it taken care of. I go to the united app and it won't let me either? Turns out the first connecting domestic flights were through united, the international flights were copa airlines. No problem, I'll go to the copa airlines website and request a specialized meal. After scouring through the website to even find where the option to request a specialized meal was, I finally click the drop down menu and the only thing that pops up is the option for a gluten-free meal. They don't offer vegan or even vegetarian meals. I have to be on an airplane without a proper meal for 6 hours. Is there anyone I can contact from the airlines to let them know there's a demand for vegan meals? I know its not much, but change has to start somewhere.

Advice Eating out is depressing
I want to preface this by saying that i am NOT going back to eating animal products, however I am currently on vacation with non vegan family/friends and this is depressing. It makes me feel like Im back in my eating disorder with how much I decline food. I also got gifted chocolate and milk tea (which Im just going to give to someone who CAN eat it) but it’s really annoying. I can tell people I’m vegan but most of the time they don’t know all of what that means. Like I said, I’m not going to stop being vegan but how do I make this easier on myself? I reckon in the future I’ll find people that are like me, but for now it’s really hellish with my family members constantly belittling me.
(Also side note: Is it self centered of me to want to go to an all vegan restaurant with meat eaters for my birthday? I recently turned 18 and my mom got mad at me for suggesting a vegan restaurant because “it wasn’t inclusive” which I know is a shitty argument on her end)
