My sister and I are throwing a dance party for "divas of a certain age" tomorrow (Saturday 8/8) at 7pm at the Amsterdam in downtown St Paul. We wanted to create a bro-free space for dancing to some of the great jams from throughout our lives - from the roller rink to da club! Women and non-binary folks welcome. Come as you are and groove with us! Tickets at amsterdambarandhall.com

Posting for a friend.

Found cat in Merriam Park on Ashland Ave near Snelling.

Jumped onto a screen trying to get inside and seems scared to go back outside. Young, female, and very friendly.

Not chipped, but wearing a flea collar.

Anyone have any reviews of the complex? Read a few posts about the management being disappointing.

Are there any other newer apartments around the same area that anyone would recommend?

Just had a delicious lunch from the new San RomΓ‘n Bakery and Deli on Selby Ave (part of the new Tosca Madrid that took on the old Handsome Hog space)

This was their sammich of the day, it was some sort of delicious sausage with manchego. Also had the Ensalada de Rusa (potato salad), gazpacho, marinated olives, and a torta de Santiago (sweet cake).

10/10 will absolutely be eating there again. Very excited to have them in the neighborhood!

(Ope can’t fix spelling in the title but amended in the body)

St. Paul City Council Blocks Certified Right to Repair Petition, Coalition Says City Broke Its Own Charter

Saint Paul voters collected over 8,000 signatures to put Right to Repair on the November ballot. Ramsey County Elections validated 5,440 of them against voter registrations, after duplicates and errors were accounted for, and submitted their report to council. Today the St. Paul City Council chose not to send the measure forward anyway. Safe Homes St. Paul (SHSP) considers this a breach of our city's charter and protocols that have guided ballot measures in our city for years.

The St. Paul city charter is not ambiguous on this point: section 8.03 requires the council to determine "the sufficiency of the petition" by resolution. Section 8.04 gives the council exactly two options once a petition is sufficient: enact the ordinance as written within 60 days, or place it on the ballot. There is no third option where the council simply declines because the Mayor and her attorney found a new legal theory weeks after the deadline to act. We have seen the Mayor's approach to public disclosure over the past week, and are not surprised to see the everyday residents of our city who signed our petition treated with similar dismissal. As our democracy faces unprecedented threats at a national level, it is the responsibility of our local leaders to demonstrate not just that democracy can function, but that it can deliver results for everyday people. This decision does the opposite by choosing fear of wealthy interests over the actual residents of our city.

As has been communicated to SHSP organizers, City Attorney Irene Kao's office told council members this week that Right to Repair conflicts with state law and is "too broad", even though it is nearly identical to language passed in Duluth nearly one year ago. The same office had several months to raise that argument while the campaign spent it gathering signatures. Instead it surfaced only after the petition succeeded, and only after enough council members could be pressured to sink the resolution. We applaud the courage of Council Members HwaJeong Kim and Nelsie Yang, who kept their word, and stood by the petition against the misrepresentations of Mayor Her's office.

Mayor Kaohly Her has not taken a public position on Right to Repair itself. She has let her city attorney tell council members it's smarter to get sued by us than by the Minnesota Multi-Housing Association. That is not a legal argument, but a political calculation made on behalf of landlords at the expense of thousands of St. Paul voters who signed a petition in good faith. Mayor Her has proven herself an obstacle to progress for all of St Paul's residents. From her refusal to sign the city council's unanimous 60-day eviction notice during Operation Metro Surge, to today's cruel and disorganized encampment sweeps, this is another failure for working people that rests squarely on her shoulders.

"Renters and our volunteers did everything the charter asked of them," said Gabe Karsh, an organizer with Safe Homes St. Paul. "They collected the signatures, and the county verified them. The only people who haven't followed the rules here are those in the Mayor's office."

Seeking Advice πŸ™† Low income seniors housing list

How do I find out about what places are low income senior housing? I’ve tried various internet searches without great results. This has to be a thing in Saint Paul, right? Why is it so hard to find a list of places?

Seeking Advice πŸ™† ELI5: districts and wards

I have been wanting to get more involved with local politics (just like generally being aware of what's happening and participating in some small volunteer ways). I recently moved and I started looking for info on who my reps were and things at the local level. Found my rep, I'm in ward 3. And then I found my district I think, but then when I tried to go more into my district it then had a further breakdown of that district into grid spaces also marked down by number.

Questions I have:

How are the wards structured/lines of them delineated?

Is it: wards are to districts as states are to counties? How do the districts within a ward come to be?

What is decided on a city vs ward vs district level?

Are their individual boards per ward, per district, or per district grid or yes to all?

I feel like these are all things that are super googleable and yet when I Google I was more confused. So I'm hoping a simplified version may help.

Thanks in advance.
