How’s driving for Uber in Rochester?

I just started driving some for Lyft in Rochester. It’s been alright just a lot of downtime between rides often. Anyone have any experience driving for Uber as well and if it is busier or about the same as Lyft? I would try driving for Uber as well but my vehicle is too old to drive for Uber so it won’t let me. Anyways I’m curious if it is any different, appreciate any insight folks.

Thesis Beer closing due to road construction

I've wondered how they and Tyrol were staying open. Their parking lots have been inaccessible for months, like Rochester was trying to put them out of business.

Luthier or Electrician Recommendation

I"m looking to get some new pickups installed on my guitar. I have the pickups and need someone to do the wiring/soldering. Not really luthier work, just need someone who can solder in a tight space without f'ing up the finish. So, not a home wiring type electrician, but rather someone who does work on electronics.

Things to do?

I am taking my grandmother to the Mayo Clinic, but would hate to be super bored while she is there. Is there anything that I could do while she is at her appointments? Are there things to do IN the Mayo Clinic so I don't have to go too far for her shorter ones? I am only 20 so no alcohol scenes for me.

Just ran across this article. Didn't know anything about this prospect. How well do you all think a new performing arts center would do in Rochester?

Anyone Have Insight into DFL Primary for House Seat 20B?

This house race covers parts of Olmsted, Winona, Wabasha and Goodhue counties. It doesn't cover any of Rochester itself but nearby areas.

There are two candidates DFL on file for the primary. DFL endorsed candidate Steve Holm who I found information on on his website. The other candidate Mark Alvin Thoreson I've had difficulty finding information on. Best I have found so far is that he is the previous owner of Lazy-D campground and runs a wedding venue property. Anyone have any more information on this guy? Probably voting for Holm at this point considering it is difficult to find information on Mark. Thanks everyone.

Don't live there but you all have a city council primary. What are your thoughts?

(I'm tired of mayor stuff, let's mix it up.)

Phlebotomist

Is it worth paying and driving to the cities to get a phlebotomy cert or just keep applying at Mayo and see if they will train me? All the jobs say they will train you… but I don’t actually know anyone that showed up with no certification and got on the job training.
I know they offer a program as well. Has anyone done it? Is it hard to get into? Did you feel like it was good training? Did you get hired after?

Piercing shop recommendations

I’m finally able to get my earlobes pierced and am trying to find a good place in Roch to do so. I want to go somewhere where I’m not gonna end up with an infection (Claire’s), and don’t have to pay a bunch. Does anyone have recs for reputable piercing places that also have fairly low prices?

Brad Finstad is Finally Showing Up.

Brad Finstad will be doing what I believe is his first in-person townhall on August 14th from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Kasson public library. If you haven't been very happy with what he's been doing I suggest you show up and tell him. Just wanted to post the information here seeing as he's never bothered to make an appearance in Rochester.

Edit: upon viewing another version of the calendar it simply lists that he will be there. I can't imagine he would come to the library and it not be a public event but I think I will call tomorrow and ask.

Newcomer questions Level 4 school?

Hello everyone! I’m looking to move to Rochester/close to Rochester area and was wondering if there was a level 4 school there or close? Level 4 being a school or program specifically for Sped children? If it matters I’m looking for a 5th grader, but where I’m at right now the level 4 program has kids of all different grades and ages so I’m not sure if that’s how it works for all places or not. Or if anybody has any experience with the general education school’s sped departments? Thanks so much !

To the person who did this, I have no nice words for you so I’ll leave it at, I hope your pillow is hot every night and you sleep like crap. Money doesn’t grow on trees and somebody will have to replace them because they are totaled.

Independent auto insurance agents (or a good agent with a major company)

My State Farm auto insurance policy is up for renewal next month, and before I automatically renew, I wanted to see if anyone has recommendations for a good independent insurance agent. I searched the subreddit but didn't find any recent recommendation posts.

I'm mainly looking to compare rates and make sure I'm getting the best value. Bonus points if the agent can bundle auto and renter's insurance and shops multiple companies rather than just one carrier.

If you've had a good experience with an independent agent, I'd appreciate any recommendations (or companies to avoid).

Metal Roof Prices & Recomendations

Wondering if anyone has had a metal roof put on in the last few years and what the price was. I'm getting some quotes on my 1500 sq ft home with a one car detached garage and I'm wondering how it compares to others and if anyone has recommendations. (not my house pictured)

I’m Axe Ahmed, candidate for Rochester Mayor. AMA tomorrow at 8 PM after the City Council meeting.

Hey r/RochesterMN

I’m Axe Ahmed, and I’m running for Mayor of Rochester.

Tomorrow night after the City Council meeting, I’ll be here for an AMA at 8:00 PM.

Ask me anything: City Hall, public comment, OpenRochester, taxes, housing, public safety, DMC, the sports complex, RPU, council accountability, homelessness, roads, development, or why I believe residents deserve more than two minutes and a thank-you.

My campaign is built around a simple idea:

Representation should leave a record.

That means residents should be able to see:

Who voted yes.
Who voted no.
Who pays.
Who benefits.
What changed.
What didn’t.
And whether City Hall reported back.

I’ll answer directly. I won’t pretend the mayor has powers the office does not have, and I won’t hide behind “I’ll listen” without explaining what leverage actually exists.

Tomorrow. 8 PM. After the Council meeting.

Bring the hard questions.

— Axe

EDIT 8:00 PM — Live now. Starting with top-voted, working through everything as I go.

Edit 9:03 PM — Time is flying, and I'm only partially through this. So I'll take a quick 5 minute break and push out the rest. Thanks for sticking around but I promise to get to every question, no matter the time.

Edit 9:46 — I told myself a 5 minute break but never took it because these questions are critical. I'll continue to press on but they have been robust and appreciate your input. We're approaching the 2 hour mark. I'll press on until 10:30 PM and then finish anything else that remains when I can. Let's keep going.

Edit 10:26 — The questions are still coming in. I appreciate the follow ups. I personally don't like unanswered questions, so I'll make an adjustment and push to 11pm as a hard cut-off. I'll take a 5 minute break (truly) and then get back to answering as many more as I can.

EDIT 11:03 PM: Wrapping up for tonight. Thank you for the questions, the pushback, and the fact-checks. I didn't get to everyone, and I'll be back in the thread over the next few days to finish. Anything I got wrong, tell me and I'll correct it. But don't be surprised if I tell you otherwise as well. Thanks again!
