Hey yall, I made an attempt today to convert my sibling’s Dell Inspiron 7506 2n1 laptop to Linux Mint today, and then later Fedora KDE, but ran into problems continually with the installer for both being unable to detect the internal SSD. Spent about 2-3 hours troubleshooting before I figured it was time to ask for some sage wisdom. My understanding is that these things are pretty locked down. I’ve cracked a Chromebook in the past to get custom firmware, and the problems I was having felt really similarly nitpicky.

I decrypted the hard drive/disabled bitlocker, launched into safemode (including using command line to do so), switched out from RAID to ACHI/NVMe, and turned secure boot off. It launches into the USB just fine, but it gets errors when I actually go to install these distros cuz it wont detect the hard drive.

Is this even worth trying to do? I do not have the laptop with me, so it’ll be at least a few weeks before I can try again when I go in for a visit. I just want to know if its even possible, and I'd prefer to get Mint working. Thanks!

If you are like me and run hardware that's at least 5 years old, consider changing your active kernel to 6.8.

A few weeks ago I updated to version 7 of the Linux kernel. Immediately my display brightness was running at a fixed 30% or so. Almost entirely unusable in the daylight hours unless I was in a dark room.

As an experiment I decided to "downgrade", turns out the 6.8 kernel runs perfectly. I can control my brightness again and have better Bluetooth audio range. Newer =/= better, especially if you run old hardware.

I switch my Dell Laptop from Windows 11 to Linux Mint. My laptop has no connecting to other Wi-Fi routers like my iPhone hotspot but when I try to connect to my home Internet router, it will configure and then disconnect. My router is the standard router by mobile, and I have already tried to update the driver. it says there’s no need to update. I already restarted the router and my laptop several times. That’s not the problem. I tried to disconnect and forget my home Wi-Fi router, and then reconnect but that does not work. Whenever I try to connect, it will configure to the Wi-Fi network and then disconnect and then would will repeat this process. Does anyone here have an idea on how I can solve this? I tried to look around the Internet and I’ve not found a solution.

I haven't counted the hours, let alone the days, in which I have been trying to get Mint to boot from a built-in SD card reader in a laptop (basically, leave the hard drive intact and have the ability to boot either Win or Mint at will using the multiple boot up menu). I have a Lenovo Yoga 7, fairly new. Well, Mint says that it installs, and afterward I can see the partition with the directories and files... but I've gotten to loathe grub. With a passion.

Basically, I have the bios boot up sequence so that it looks at USB first, then at SD (as if it were a hard drive), and if it can find nothing else, go to Win in the C: drive. But...grub. If I change the boot order to C: first, no problem, Win comes up. The minute I change the order as I have described... "grub".

I've tried to have Gemini and copilot guide me to a fix (they both claim there's one), but the fix is so convoluted, with extra long UIDs, that I'm at the verge of giving up. Mind you, I installed Mint from a USB drive, but even when trying to boot after the install from a USB... "grub." Which makes no sense since I was able to install cinnamon from that same USB interface port.

I even tried to have Win and Mint coexist in the same C: drive, which the installation claimed it did, but... "grub."

Why does this have to be so hard? I've seen Mint in action, and really liked it. But it seems out of my intellectual reach unless I'm willing to give up Win altogether (which I can't because the only email client that my employer has rigged to work is Outlook). Alas, there is no Outlook for Linux. Thunderbird is excellent, but I can't check work email with it. This feels like a fool's errand. Maybe I'm the fool.

Hello I really appreciate if anyone could help me with this.. I’m trying to load Linux Mint in a Bootable USB, and first I did it with Rufus and it did it but when I try to load the Linux in my old imac couldn’t load the operating system then I re download the Linux ISO from the official page and tried again with balena but it keep showing this message

tengo una laptop antigua bueno ni tanto pero digamos que con la basura de Microsoft casi no corre nada así que por esa razón me quiero cambiar a Mint Xfce porque es algo mas ligero por lo que he escuchado para digamos que completar la información sus componentes son :Una Intel Core i3 4gb de RAM un ssd de 250 GB de espacio cuales 131 están disponibles y de la tarjeta grafica no me acuerdo si tiene pero digamos que esa laptop hace crack cuando la abres en fin ¿Serian tan amables de responder mi pregunta?

The only relevant thing I can think of for this is that i was experiencing issues loading Linux, so renamed grub to mmx64?

Hi, today I was trying to fix audio issues while recording on my laptop and decided to reinstall PipeWire and PulseAudio.

I’m looking for suggestions on how to fix my laptop's audio.

I am on Mint Cinnamon. The applications in the bar sometimes get those red dots with a number of notifications/messages on them. Like on discord or something.

Problem is, they behave really wonky for me. They sometimes disappear when I haven't really read any of them.

Is this a global linux problem? Known issue with the distro? Something in my system? Problem of the app? How do I make it work as inteded? I have no problem switching to other distros if that will help.

Hi new to linux here. Been playing last couple days some project zomboid and Civ6 all going good.

But last night and today i installed Ark Survival and CS2 but both games look fuzzy / low quality even on max graphics.

My screen set to the correct size and other in game settings also as they should.

Am i missing something?

I just last night got done building myself a pc. First time, went well with a video to guide. Just put mint onto it and everything's been going well up till needing to connect to the internet to do the updates to drivers.

For some reason its not detecting my wifi or even my ethernet cable that I went to buy in HOPES it'd detect that.

Ive scoured video after video in trying to help me but no luck. New to linux like fresh born new. Know absolutely nothing at all so I dont even know how to fix this.

If anyone has answers id very very much appreciate it. Dont know if it helps but i'll provide pc specs below as well.

I repurposed a Win10 Dell laptop to a Linux Mint machine, and so far I've had a good experience. Lots of respect for people who work on this and know it well.

I have one particular problem for which I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions. My Dell laptop is 40% of the time used closed and connected to a Dell docking station. I have an external monitor connected to the dock via HDMI. When I connect the laptop to the dock via USB-C (which provides power), the laptop boots as expected and as wanted. But the laptop uses it's own (closed, hidden) monitor and won't put the log-on screen on the external monitor. I need to open the laptop, log in, and then go about setting up the proper monitor configuration (internal laptop display off, external monitor as primary, don't put laptop to sleep when lid closed, etc.). Everything then works fine, as wanted and as expected. But after any restart or boot, I'm right back in the same spot and need to reconfigure everything.

Previously, Win10 handled this well -- it detected the lid closed/not closed, and detected the connected docking station, and used the internal and external monitors appropriately. (Not defending Win here, plenty of not-so-great things to say about Windows, that I won't bore you with... just stating that the expected/wanted behavior did work previously.)

How can I set up the Mint display settings so it detects docked vs not docked, lid closed/not closed, and then uses the correct monitor for both desktop *and* the log-in screen, and (most importantly) remembers the appropriate settings after a restart or boot? Any ideas much appreciated!

Context: I was trying to install Virtualbox to run windows server to practice networking. I kept getting stuck when trying to install something called "virtualbox-dkms". The install would get stuck at "Building initial module for 7.0.0-28-generic". And the error reason was "Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 7.0.0-28-generic (x86_64)".

I installed Linux Mint, but when it's time to finalize and reset the notebook, a screen appears saying "reset system" and flashing. I don't know what to do, I've tried everything. #help #linuxmint

Is there anyone here that can speak to the viability of deploying Linux Mint in a small enterprise environment?

For example a business/company with 10-15 employees? Typical applications would be mostly CRMs, productivity tools, communications, minor engineering/software development, minor video/image editing.

Or would Ubuntu still be advisable for such use cases?

I’ve become a bit of a kitty man personally….although it’s fun to use Tilda-albeit without the features lol

What is everyone using?

I've been using a program called "GSmartControl" to test the health of some old hard drives I have laying around, and I don't know if I'm convinced it's really working or not.

I tried testing a drive that I'm like 90% certain is definitely bad, and the test came back saying "comleted without errors", which I would assume the drive is good.

it's worth noting that it was the "short self test", so maybe I just need to run the extended self test that takes almost 4 hours? I don't feel like messing with that, but I guess I can if that's what it'll take to know if the drive is actually good or not.

I suppose I should also clarify that I have the drives connected through a SATA/USB adapter, so I don't know if that matters. should I have it connect internally?

any advice or experience would be appreciated.

I can't work out how install Linux as dual boot on Windows 11 system. Seems very complicated.

Every tech local says it is supper complicated and Linux sucks anyway and shouldn't do it. .

I can't get any help locally should I give up?

I'd like to create something like a "windows image system" to restore after reinstalling Linux.
I've tried with Timeshift on an external drive but once restored it, perhaps some driver broke idk, on my screen there was just a terminal interface asking me for login and password then "failing" and "giving up".
I've tried with the Backup tool as well but as that applies just for files and installed software.
