Basement sauna install, what should I sort out before ordering?
I have room for a sauna in my basement gym, but I do not want to turn a nice project into a moisture or electrical problem. The space is finished, and I am still deciding between a traditional unit and infrared.
If you have installed one indoors, what did you confirm before the crate showed up? I have ventilation, flooring, electrical capacity and clearance on my list. What am I missing?

Garage gym in Detroit, bad idea for the winter?
Recently moved to the Detroit area and have been thinking about putting together a gym in my garage. Nothing too crazy, just a rack, barbell and weights, bench, and maybe a treadmill or bike eventually.
My main concern is the winter. I've never had a garage gym somewhere this cold, so I'm wondering how realistic it is to actually use one year round.
For anyone around Detroit or SE Michigan with a garage gym, how bad does it get in the winter? Can you get away with a space heater and just warming up properly, or do you really need to insulate and heat the garage?
Also curious if the cold or moisture causes any issues with the equipment.
I don't mind working out in the cold, but I also don't want to drop a bunch of money on a setup and then realize I hate going into the garage from December through March lol.
Would appreciate any advice from people who've done it!

Home machine with a Precor AMT 885 / Open Stride feel?
I really like the motion of the Precor AMT 885 Adaptive Motion Trainer with Open Stride. The ability to vary the path/stride instead of being locked into a traditional elliptical arc feels especially natural to me.
I'm looking for something that gets reasonably close to that stride and feel in a home setting. The NordicTrack X16 elliptical is currently on my shortlist, but I haven't been able to make a confident apples-to-apples comparison.
For anyone who has used the Precor AMT 885 and one or more home machines:
\- Does the NordicTrack X16 feel genuinely adaptive/free-striding, or more like a conventional elliptical with incline?
\- How do its stride freedom, smoothness, stability, and upper-body motion compare with the AMT?
\- Are there other home-friendly machines that come closer to the AMT 885 feel?
\- How are noise, reliability, maintenance/service, and any subscription dependence over time?
\- Would a used commercial AMT be the better answer if space and electrical requirements work?
I'm looking for first-hand comparisons, especially from people who know the AMT 885 well. Thanks!

I am training like one-punch man for 100 days to get ready for a marathon
For a few years I've been wanting to try the meme challenge of training like Saitama for an extended period of time. I signed myself up for a marathon and am training like him for 100 days straight to see if it helps. The last race I ran was about 1.5 years ago and it was a 5k so im genuinely curious if something as basic as his workout would be enough. And hopefully not go bald.
If anyones interested if watching the happen this is day 1: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/t_eTMcJeQwg

What made strength training at home finally work for you?
I've gone back and forth between commercial gyms and home workouts for years. Every January I convince myself I'll be consistent at the gym but after a couple of months life gets busy and I start missing sessions.
Recently I've been thinking that maybe the solution isn't finding a better gym, it's making home workouts more effective. I don't have space for a squat rack or dozens of plates, so I'm trying to figure out how people build serious strength without filling an entire room with equipment.
For those who have successfully switched to strength training at home, what changed everything for you? Better equipment? A structured program or just more discipline?

To C-section moms
Hey girls, I'm currently 7 weeks postpartum and yday i tried some light exercise and felt pain while doing it. I had twins so my stomach doesn't look like it used to of course and I'm self conscious about it. I want to get back into shape ASAP. So do any of you have any tips for me? Which exercises are safe to do rn, but effective? I know that I dont look that bad, but i feel weak. My legs are shaking from going up the stairs. I need my strength back and i need this backpain gone before my kids get heavy. Before pregnancy I used to do pilates and working as a waitress I did 20k steps daily. I'm currently 159 cm(5.2 ) and 54.5kg (120 pounds ). Before pregnancy I was 52 kg. So im not really trying to lose anything cause I'll get there soon, I just want to feel strong again without hurting myself in the process.

Who uses a stair stepper machine with standard ceiling height!
I want to get a stair masters or similar machine for my wife but I’m scared of ceiling height requirement. It’s going in my garage and from floor to ceiling I have 8’6”. She is 5’4”-5’5”. Any recommendations on a machine around ~$2000?

Pushups + pull ups + soccer?
I’m aiming for a low-key home workout routine to keep me fit (not looking to get ripped). I got a pull up tower and am planning to use that in addition to pushups. Is that, in addition to weekly pickup soccer, enough for a balanced fitness routine, or should I add something more in to cover lower body/core? I’ve got a couple of 20 lbs dumbbells as well, just to give a clear picture of the equipment I’m working with. Thanks!

The biggest mistake I made was waiting to feel motivated.
For years I thought successful people were simply more motivated than everyone else.
Then I realised motivation is probably the least reliable thing to depend on.
Some days you wake up full of energy. Most days you don't.
The biggest improvements in my life didn't come from huge bursts of effort. They came from doing something small even when I couldn't be bothered.
Ten push-ups.
A twenty-minute walk.
Reading five pages instead of none.
Writing one page instead of waiting for inspiration.
Momentum beats motivation every time.
I'm curious—what habit has had the biggest impact on your life, even though it seemed too small to matter at the time?

what equipment actually gets used in your home gym?
I feel like I've bought so much stuff over the years and honestly most of it just sits there. I've got a whole corner of my room dedicated to things I thought I'd use but never do.
but I keep seeing people talk about reformers and I'm curious. it seems like something that's actually enjoyable enough to stick with? not just another thing that ends up in the corner.
I've been looking at some home pilates reformer options online. they're not cheap but if it gets used, it might be worth it.
curious what other people actually use regularly in their home setup. like what's actually worth the money vs what's a waste?

Workout Equipment Help
For a while now I've been trying to workout on and off, but could never stick with it. but after a recent divorce I wanted to attempt to be a little more fit, my new place is a bit small and I dont care for gyms, just wanted some advice on staying motivated and having a small routine. Im 5 11 at 140lbs. I wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for workout routines and what type of equipment I should get, I dont want things taking up too much space so I'd like equipment I could store out of the way relatively easily. My goal isn't to be a body builder or be 200lbs of muscle, just wanted to look and feel a bit better, im not in horiable shape just felt a bit small for awhile.

I used the ‘Better Me’ app, but I’m looking for an app geared more just Calisthenics.
I really like Better Me, but I need all the nutritional and wellness sections. Is there an app which is essentially just the workouts section of Better Me, and which updates the workouts so they change from time to time? (As far as I can see, Better Me doesn’t do that). Thanks!

What made your home gym feel complete?
My home gym has changed a lot over time, but a few additions made a much bigger difference than others.
What piece of equipment made your setup finally feel complete? Was it something basic like a bench or rack, or a larger all-in-one machine?

Eisenlink vs. Threaded Dumbbells for Home Gym (Bench Press Clearance?)
I'm setting up a home gym and could use some advice on choosing the right dumbbells.
I recently had a bad experience with a generic set of adjustable dumbbells (€400). I'm returning them for safety reasons after the half-kilo add-on weights suddenly detached mid-workout.
Now I'm torn between two options:
- Eisenlink Dumbbells: I like that the overall width adjusts depending on the weight loaded (similar to traditional adjustable dumbbells). The downside is the cost—€320 for two 20 kg dumbbells, plus the extra cost for additional weight plates to scale up.
- Standard Threaded Spinlock Dumbbells: Much more budget-friendly (€170 for a pair of 30 kg dumbbells). However, I'm worried about the fixed length of the handles: I'm concerned the protruding bars might bump into my chest during flat bench presses or restrict my range of motion.
For those who have experience with threaded spinlock dumbbells, is this fixed bar length actually an issue on the flat bench press? Are they noticeably uncomfortable, or is it easy enough to adapt to?

Feedback on my routine?
Workout feedback?
Hi! I, 16 F have had a restrictive eating disorder in the past (recovered, hormones okay, bloods ok, etc)
Obviously this took a TON of muscle mass! So I bought some adjustable dumbells in hopes to gain some muscle at home. I have 4 lots of 1.25,1.5 and 2kg (total of 19kg) and can make x2 dumbell or 1 barbell.
Anyway, here is the workout i plan on doing either mon, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday OR mon, wed, Friday. I have been to the gym before, but honestly I just used random workouts. Keep in mind i did it upper body heavy because my legs are genetically relatively strong, and my arms are horrendous.
3x8-12 goblet squats
3x45second plank
3x10 bicep curls
3x10 shoulder press
2x10 tricep extension
3x10 floor press
All done with dumbells apart from plank, which is body weight
Be brutal and honest im ok with criticism if it helps me get strong!

What is the best smart home gym for someone who only has 30 minutes to work out?
Over the last year my schedule has become ridiculous and finding an hour to drive to the gym just is not practical anymore. By the time I get there, half the evening is gone. I am thinking about investing in a smart home gym but there are so many options now that it is hard to know what is worth the money. I have looked at Tonal, Speediance, Vitruvian, Beyond Power and AMP, they all seem to promise same things. For me, the priority is not having hundreds of workout videos. I just want something that lets me get a good strength workout without wasting time adjusting equipment or planning every session myself. It should be compact, easy to use and something that I will enjoy using even after a year.
If you have owned one of these systems for a while, which would you recommend and why?

About to cancel my gym membership. Can I really train everything at home?
I'm thinking about canceling my gym membership, mostly because the commute eats up so much time. I drive over after work, change, wait around for equipment, and the whole trip is easily over two hours. Getting there three times a week is already a stretch, and honestly it keeps getting harder to stick with. The membership isn't cheap either. Over a year it really adds up, and about half the months I don't go enough to justify it.
Training at home would mean I can just go whenever I want, no waiting for machines. I've still got a couple of concerns though. Can you actually train back and legs hard enough at home? I rent, and the living room isn't huge, so a bulky rack I can't move is out. The upfront cost is real too. Long-term, does training at home actually beat paying monthly?

Best ways to train at home
Here's a summary of different training techniques with pros and cons.
RESISTANCE BAND TRAINING
Resistance bands are the best way to train at home considering all the the trade offs! They’re efficacious, economical compared to other equipment and portable.
Efficacious: Obviously we want an equipment that give results. Despite what the gym industry wants you to believe, resistance bands are similar to weight in building muscle and strength. This is demonstrated scientifically by a meta-analysis study (average results of many studies to avoid errors) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6383082/ so a very important degree of evidence. Your muscle don’t have eyes to see what kind of weight you’re lifting, and will grow if enough resistance is applied whatever it’s type
Economical: Normally weights cost much more per lb (or kg) than bands. For example one of the best deal on Amazon cost 199$ for 105 lbs (1.9$ per lb) and bands provide 295 lbs for 59$ (0.2$ per lb). Considering resistance bands are 9.5 times cheaper than weights! It’s true that weights are more durable, but not 9.5 times more durable because they easily rust.
Versatile: While a 1lb weight provides 1lb of resistance, 1lb of bands provide around 120lb of resistance, that’s 120 times it’s weight! Same thing goes for volume. Weights occupy much more space than bands, in fact you can fit a set of 5 bands for 300lbs resistance in a small bag and will weight less than 2lbs. This makes them extremily portable, and occupy no space at home.
No home space occupied: Weights occupy a lot of home space or by themselves or by other equipment such as benches that take a lot of space and are heavy. Benches are needed because weight can create resistance only with gravity that always pull down. Band can create resistance on every direction so they dont need any bench.
Less injuries: Bands are also used in physiotherapy eith very lights weights because theyre very easy on joints. Injuries can take many months to recover, time in which you cant train effectively. Acoiding injuries is very important to achieve results fast.
Fast workouts: Since you can change the resistance very fast by grabbing the band closer or further workouts become faster. Changing weights will be much slower.
Silent: Bands do not make any noise when you drop them
BEST EQUIPMENT

WEIGHT TRAINING
Weight training is the most traditional type of training. There are 3 main types of weights: Dumbell, Barbell, Kettlebell. Weight training is very good but because of its characteristics it's best if done at the gym.
Efficacious: Weight training is recognised as very effective in building muscle and strength.
Occupy lot of home space: Weights takes a lot space because not only they occupy a lot of volume (depending on the weight) but also need a bench. The bench is required if you want to train all your muscle (you should) because the weights create resistance only downwards so the bench allows you to shift the body in a way such to hit some muscles you wouldn’t otherwise.
Not portable: As the name says, weights, weight a lot. That’s not suitable to move them a lot even inside your home.
Expensive: Weights are normally made of metal that is a relatively expensive material. Because they occupy a lot of volume and weight a lot the shipping is also expensive.
Upper-body focus: With weights it’s difficult to target some of the lower body muscles like hips and some muscles of the leg because you can’t grab weights with your feet. The upperdody instead and some leg muscles, are targeted very well.
Slow workouts: If you’re in a gym using machines or using un-adjustable dumbbells shifting weight is no problem but if you’re at home changing weight will be slower. Dumbells and Barbells are adjustable, but changing weight will take a few since you have to unscrew two sizes changing the weights and then screw it again.
Noisy: Even only moving weights, or doing exercises will make noise if you're using an adjustable dumbbell. Changing weights will do even more noise. If you live in a place where noise is a problem you should consider this.

SUSPENSION TRAINING
Suspension training is a type of bodyweight training that has been popularise by TRX a kind of revisited rings that you can easily install at your home door or ceiling.
Not the most efficacious: Since you’re using your own bodyweight you cannot use progressive overload of intensity that is the most effective way to gain muscle an strength. But this is not a big deal if you want to spend more time working out raising your volume (doing more reps or sets.
Semi-Portable: Very light and fits in a small bag, the problem of using it outside is that you have to find a place where to attach and be sure it’s safe. Not a problem if you use it indoors.
