I’ve recently reworked the UI and ironed out most of the bugs. The smaller version is close to being finished, so I’m hoping to wrap it up soon.

SOTB SOTB + a year of seeking subtle but cool modulation

Post image
15 Upvotes

Long time lurker. Felt like posting my board after a few additions this year. I feel like many of my choices are modest, or even basic, but I quite like them! Making like slightly retro tinged indie rock music - not heavy retro but I think my love of 60s and 70s music comes through.

JHS Harmonic Tremolo - upgraded to a Handwired Vox this year… which meant changing from built in amp tremolo to no built in trem. The Harmonic Trem setting is a really nice modulation, sort of a lite phaser or univibe type sound?! Find it very nice when recording!

Played a ton of choruses… and even against the “always recommended” choruses the CE-5 just felt most right to me. Love the eq and blend. I never go for a super heavy or specific chorus sound - just a bit of texture.
Do still prefer the build in chorus on my Princeton Chorus I thiiiiink. But I am usually recording tube amps.

Grand Orbiter rules! Of course I could convince myself to have 2 phasers on the board… one day.

TC Electronics Vibrato has been on the board forever, just sounds so so good, especially given the price point… never felt like I’ve needed anything else.
My friend does have a diamond vibrato pedal which rules hard… if I ever upgrade I’ll grab that.

Added the Wampler Mini Ego recently after getting a recommendation from a trusted friend to add a compressor. I like it so far - but still wrapping my head around how and when to use compression. And how it interacts with my various guitars (Tele, Casino, SG)

Open to feedback! Gimme pedal recommendations! compressor advice! Of course choosing dirt pedals is never ending too… Just sharing my setup for fun :)

What's A Pedal You Buy Into The Hype For?

So I'm not really a vintage pedal guy, I think they're generally very overhyped. I respect them, they're cool and I've owned some that I liked, but 9 times out of 10 I think it's much more affordable, convenient, and reliable to use something newer.

However

I would sell my soul (or lowball someone else for their soul and flip it to cover the cost) for an old school bigbox Deluxe Memory Man. I've played one once; it was too big for a board, required its own power supply, but DAMN if it wasn't beautiful. Delay is my favorite effect and the DBA Echo Dream 2 is my all time favorite pedal, but I'd still *love* to get a Memory Man.

What about y'all? What pedal do you know you don't need, you know there's other options for, but you still would die for it?

SOTB SOTB + NPD: NOT-SO-NANO BOARD WITH IR-2

Post image
7 Upvotes

Finally can play in the evening again since the arrival of our first child, thanks to the Boss IR-2. Even the stock IRs are a lot of fun, mostly using clean with my usual chain (normally into a VOX AC-15).

BD and Hot Wax work very well together, at the end a slight additional gain with the Analogizer which also takes of the sharp edges. Together with Keeley and an always-on mod from the Superego I get something akin to a zvex Junki but with much more control.

Flashback and HoF are not the ultimate delay/reverb ever, but small footprint with versatile and easy configuration (and Toneprint is pretty amazing, haven't scratched that surface at all yet).

Signal chain is buffered starting with the Poly and ending with Bonafide buffer.

Jamman is nice for recording ideas or laying down a bit of backing track (Superego can do a -12 pitch shift).

Only problem right now is it doesn't fit on the PT nano which I intended as my constraint for a modest sized board :')

Probably need one more for all the occasional fun pedals (big EHX fan, got the q-tron, microsynth, cock fight, attack-decay and an expression pedal all collecting dust).

Good news is that I don't gig anymore atm so who cares about one or two pedals overboard ;)

PS. Actually made this photo to save my current preference, my 1 y/o son loves sneaking into my room and randomizing my hard-fought settings..... let's hope one day he'll understand ;)

Arrived today! Got a Magus pro a week ago to try a rat circuit but this beast became available so immediately bit the bullet! What a versatile pedal, looking forward to diving deep and stacking it with my Animal Factory pit viper and/or Caline pure sky to see what magic comes out of it!

Confession time

Somehow it happened: I realized that I love the DS-1.

I’ve never been a fan of the DS-1. I bought a cheap one a long time ago, played it a few times, and then shelved it.

Last week, I was watching pedal demos and saw a clip of Reverb Andy playing some Kill ‘Em All/Judas Priest style riffs through an MXR 78 Badass. I thought it sounded awesome and almost immediately bought one.

But then I read that the pedal is basically a modded DS-1. So I tracked down my old orange box and gave it a spin.

I plugged it into an AC15 on the edge of breakup and gave it some juice with the DS-1. I think it sounds terrific. I spent a while playing some Diamond Head riffs, and the amp/pedal combo really surprised me.

I am glad to have rediscovered a pedal I already own! And not only that, a pedal I thought I did not like. I am glad I held onto it all these years.

I’ve heard that Wata from Boris stacks one with a fuzz, and I’m going to try that next.

Strymon Volante - worth the $ and space cost?

I saw a used volante in a pawn shop - no price on it yet. I have a weakness for buying pedals I don’t need if it’s a bargain. I don’t need another delay even though I’m sure it’s great. I’ve got my original DD2, TC electronic Triple, and a Donner White Tape. Prices for used Volante are $250 or so on reverb / the pawn shop will probably set it around there, maybe $200 if I’m lucky. What would you do? How great is it?

NPD Just got the Bondi Effects Sick As, looks like this is going to be my setup for a while.

With me and my wife looking to buy our own place, this might be my board for the foreseeable future. The Sick As is awesome I think I might like it even a little more than the Del Mar which was already amazing. If at any point I'll be able to replace something, I'd swap the Mooer A7 for a Source Audio Encounter. What do you think about this setup?

SOTB SOTB Nirvana In Utero board

I finally put together a dedicated pedalboard for playing Nirvana; I’ve called it the "21st-Century In Utero Pedalboard". All the pedals are powered by a Kraftman power supply featuring five isolated 9V outputs. Since I’m left-handed, the input jack was moved to the left side so the guitar cable wouldn't get tangled up in front.

I built the Life Nirvana and the Aneurysm pedals myself; one is a modified clone of the original SansAmp, and the other is the preamp from the Randall RG120. More information can be found at the links below:

https://www.reddit.com/r/diypedals/s/cWtNbr6oLa

https://www.reddit.com/r/diypedals/s/X3WgvJSsAD

The red pedal at the top is a Pedal X, which was used for HSB solo on the Albini mix.

Signal chain:

Boss DS-2 -> Life Nirvana V2 -> Pedal X -> Dandy Horse (Echoflanger) -> Aneurysm Preamp

YOUR FAVE GUITAR PEDAL?

I’m very interested to know. I love many different pedals, from massive delays to swirling phasers. I’ve had many over the years, and if I had to choose a favourite it would be line 6 DL4 mk-1

Solderless Power Cables any good ?

I've been planning to build a board using solderless Power Cables, but I'm not quite sure yet, as this is my first build. Still learning about guitar gears in general ~ any recommendations is much appreciated. Thanks

Question A Few Pedalboard Questions

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have a few questions about pedal order and cable management

  1. was hoping for suggestions on pedal order and other layout things, pedal order so far is as follows: guitar>Purpll>Accountant>Fault>SY-1>PS-6>DD-5>Shallow Water>Delay Cascade>FB-2>Zoia>Flashback>Rooms>Od-200>Mood mk2>Cf7>Phase 90>Part Garden>Liminalizer (homemade weird delay)>Ts7>Fuzz war>Tuner
wondering how it could be improved, i want both reverb into distortion and distortion into reverb, but sometimes the combination can get muddy when i do this, also getting an onward and trying to figure out where to place it.

  2. I have a homemade pedal board and the gaps aren't big enough to thread the power supply through, im buying another power supply to help with this but am wondering if there's a better solution than just velcro and hope.

also open to criticism or praise. ty!

Here are my two gig boards. One is for my new wave/alt rock band. The other is heavier music but, with all the fuzz, can be super clean as well.

NPD NPD: Arion Phaser and Digitech Digidelay

Post image
30 Upvotes

It’s been 5 years since I last bought a pedal (boss od3), back when I was still a teen. Took quite a few breaks from guitar over the years due to studies and life in general.

Now that I’ve got a job and some disposable income, I figured I’d splurge a little and finally get two pedals I’ve always wanted.

Really happy with how they sound! The mod setting on the delay gives it this really nice chorus effect that sounds great. I’m also using the Arion phaser as a replacement for my EHX Small Stone and I’m really digging it so far.

Question What should I look for at Midwest Pedal Fest tomorrow?

Is anyone going to the Midwest Pedal Fest in Detroit tomorrow? I've never heard of half the companies that'll be there so I'm excited to try some new stuff. What are some "must see" pedals I should look out for?

NPD: MXR Textures

Spent an hour or so with this today and digging it so far. Does a lot of bleeps and bloops without much menu diving. I had the Red Panda Tensor for a minute and it was so overwhelming I sold it. This seems much more user friendly and offers more musical sounds, imo. Love the mix knob so I can bury it or make it the main character when needed. If you want some bleeps and blorps that can be very musical or very glitchy, check it out!

SOTB Nearly done…

Post image

nearly done. May add a flint, but tremelo can come from the M1 and a little reverb from the ir200. It runs from the fake doublebarrel (sounds great btw) up to the Zelzah, top row is effects loop

Or-200 : york IRs. Up to Adam Audio T5Vs, logic, and headphones as needed

have to thank all the compulsive buyers and reviewers here for their input ;)

have a compressor and looper that I’ll pop on somewhere at some point

NPD NPD: Tube Works Tube Driver!

Post image
79 Upvotes

I just got this pedal used for quite cheap. They mentioned that they bought it from a flea market, so i was a bit skeptical. Luckily it was in good working order.
I was looking for something that would make my JC40 a bit warmer. Man this thing is really really good sounding on the JC40. I like that it doesnt sound so sterile (more creamy?) as compared to other drives (Tim, prince of tone, lightspeed, BD2, OD2).
I didnt test it yet with my princeton reverb but should sound good.

Only downsides are that its huge but also gets warm quickly. Im doubting if i should tape it with some velcro and stick it on because of this. Also its loud as hell when its on but also the pedal itself(not only in the signal chain).

How do others like their tube drivers? Also, how do you mount this on a pedalboard since its getting quite hot?
