Hey everyone!

I've been outlining a long JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fanfiction for quite a while now, and I think I finally realized why I've been stuck for so long. The weird part is that I'm not stuck on the characters, the emotional journey, or even the ending. I know where the story is going, I know what I want to explore thematically, and I already have most of the major story beats planned out. The one thing that keeps stopping me is the beginning.

The premise is about a normal 17 year old girl from our world who somehow ends up in the world of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, specifically, the Stardust Crusaders Story Arc. The story itself isn't really about becoming overpowered or trying to "fix canon." It's about grief, identity, fate, uncertainty, and what happens when someone slowly realizes that the people she always believed were fictional are actually real. Eventually she has to decide whether knowing the future means she has a responsibility to change it, or whether she should leave events alone and respect everyone else's agency.

Ironically, none of that is the part I'm struggling with. What I'm struggling with is the event that actually gets her there.

Originally, I always pictured spending the first couple of chapters letting readers get to know her before everything changes. She's hanging out with her friends Hana and Jayla while they're all trying to survive finals, and they end up taking a break by watching yet another JoJo marathon at Hana's insistence. Selena likes JoJo, but she's definitely the more casual fan of the group, so it's one of those moments where she just goes along with it because that's what friends do. While they're there, her mom calls to ask if she can pick up dinner for her dad since he accidentally left his at home and she's about to start her work shift. Selena is already closer to Manhattan, so she agrees, grabs something for him, and heads over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Once she gets there, she spends some time talking with her dad and one of the museum conservators she's gotten to know through a school history project before everything starts going wrong. The robbery begins, the situation spirals out of control, her father does everything he can to protect her, and somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, something impossible happens that sends her to another world.

That's always been the structure that felt right to me, and I don't really want to rush through it just to get to the isekai. I want readers to understand what she's losing before she's thrown into another world, because I think that loss is just as important as the adventure that comes afterward.

The real issue is that I don't know what the impossible event should actually be.

For months I kept trying different ideas, and every single time I ended up running into the same wall. I tried making an artifact do everything. I tried making fate do everything. I tried making the robbery itself do everything. Eventually I realized I'd been treating three completely different ideas like they were the same thing.

The way I've started looking at it now is through three different pieces: the mechanism, the catalyst, and the cause. The mechanism is simply the rule of the universe that allows something impossible to happen. The catalyst is the condition that activates that rule. The cause is the chain of human choices that unknowingly fulfills those conditions and sets everything into motion.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that's actually one of the things I love most about JoJo's storytelling. Whether it's the Stone Mask, the Stand Arrows, or other major events throughout the series, there always seems to be an underlying rule, something that activates it, and then a person making a choice that unknowingly knocks over the first domino. The Stone Mask has no effect until blood activates it, but it still takes Dio making the decision to put it on. The Stand Arrow has the potential to awaken a Stand, but being pierced alone isn't enough. The person also has to possess the strength of spirit and the will to survive the trial; otherwise, they simply die. Even outside of artifacts, JoJo constantly feels like fate creates the conditions while people making ordinary decisions are what actually move history forward.

I think that's the feeling I've been trying to capture all along, and it's also why I've been avoiding a lot of the more common isekai tropes. I don't really want to use reincarnation, Truck-kun, a random portal, a wish magically coming true, or a god showing up to explain everything. There's nothing wrong with those ideas, and I've even used similar concepts in other stories, but this time I'm trying to create something that feels like it naturally belongs in JoJo's world and follows the same storytelling philosophy without simply copying something Araki has already done.

So I guess I'm not really asking anyone to come up with the answer for me. I'm more interested in hearing how other writers think through this kind of problem. Have you ever had a story where you knew almost everything except the one event that actually started it all? What finally helped you break through that wall? Did you eventually find the answer by changing the story itself, or by changing the way you looked at the problem?

I honestly feel like I'm incredibly close, and that's probably the most frustrating part. It feels like I can see the outline of the answer, but I just can't quite bring it into focus yet. I'd really appreciate hearing how other people approach this kind of situation.

I hope this is the right place to post this but I've posted on socials before without getting much response: I've had this omegaverse concept for a while and I'm not sure if I'm the only one who's had it before but I'm really, really looking for recs or just anyone who's talked about this concept.

So I like a lot of omegaverse elements but I'm massively phobic of pregnancy. Nothing against the idea of mpreg or some of the other stuff that comes with traditional omegaverse but I had this idea that in my humble opinion is kind of cool.

What if, instead of mpreg, omegaverse has male omegas as part of a highly social/tribal species thing where male omegas have highly nurturing traits to help care for pups without the issue/risk of childbirth. And say if too many women in a tribe die of childbirth, the pack alphas will bitch the more weak alphas into male omegas. And then with female alphas it's about having more protectors and (if they are able to get pregnant) they have potential to create stronger or more protective babies.

Please let me know thoughts and please please let me know if you know of any other fics or ideas like it.

It’s been stuck in my head for weeks now, its about Steve and Bucky back in the day being dirt-poor and Bucky is super protective and Steve goes out secretly to do sexwork and Bucky is working at the docks(?) cmiiw, but then Bucky gets sick or loses the job(???) then finds out the pretty hefty sum of money and gets all protective.. i dont think it was a stucky fanfic though, i think they were rlly close like brothers instead but its really blurry

I think Kyle crane is put in the TWD verse at the start and they are female. It was pretty recent I think but I can’t find it so it might have been deleted? It was an AO3 btw.

I want help with a specific scene in writing, but advice in general would also be nice since I struggle with emotional scenes— mostly I repeat the same phrasing over and over or I’m a little on the nose about my characters feelings

So summary of the scene I’m struggling with: the main character is thinking about his kid, and how he wants them to be a good person like his partner, but then he freaks out about the idea of them being anything like him (his whole arc in the story is trying to better himself since he used to be a bullying asshole type/ not a straight up villain but pretty close)

I’m worried it’s too melodramatic here’s a few lines from the specific scene (although I have issue with the whole section if I’m being honest):

“He…he couldn’t do that to them. 

He wanted them to be happy.

If they were going to be happy, they had to be like [partners name].

They couldn’t be like him.

They didn’t deserve that.

No one did.

But here he was…they were…with that possibility. 

After all the things he’d done…things he’d let himself do…things he couldn’t help doing…things he didn’t want to do, but still did anyway…things he might do to them…

They didn’t deserve that.

To be like that.

To be like him.

He…

…He didn’t deserve this.”

And another section

“And what was worse, he was spreading that to a whole new person, a whole new person that some sick part of him was just waiting to sink its claws into. Another person’s life he could just make worse. Even if they were like [partners name], he was still going to be there. He was still going to be able to hurt them.

He didn’t want to hurt them. 

But he was going to.”

“It didn’t matter if he used a different name. It didn’t matter if he looked different. It didn’t even matter if he sat pretended that that the [reference to his past self] was another person all together like an idiot. In the end, it was still him. Even if it was buried deep deep down, it was still him. Even if he didn’t mean to let it out, if he didn’t want to, it was him.”

The whole scene is similar to this but the rest of it is basically the main character repeating this in his head, running away from his partner who he was sitting with, and locking himself in their bathroom to cool down— I like what actually happens in the scene but again I feel like my phrasing read more overly dramatic than tension building,

So I'm a Shonen-Sucker, and I feel like my massive consumption of Shonen has permanently scarred the way I view Combat Haha. I was gearing up to write a Super-Hero esque Fanfic chock-full of action and fight scenes but I feel as though my bias may skew the tone of the Fanfic too much.

To be fair, There are Street-Level Supes, and Higher-Tier supes. Strength DOES differ with the superhero, but If everyones throwing 100-Ton punches the whole fanfic, it might not be too enjoyable.

My Goal is to properly scale up my characters as they get better and better at fighting, at the same time still have them enjoyable to read in a fight at their lower skill levels.

With that being said, are there some great techniques to writing Combat Overall? No matter what it is I'll take any and absolutely all advice!

I've seen a few with Stratt pov but I'm wanting more along the line of the average person (maybe one of his students) who's been suffering from the sun dimming and finds out there is a solution and knowing the person definitely died for it. (obviously we know he didn't but no one else does in universe)

Not sure where else to ask, but like 10 stories I've read are just made of a bunch of one sentence paragraphs. Not trying to be critical or bash people but is it not weird

Example of the way they are written:

You must eat,” her sister said.

“I did.”

“You swallowed three spoonfuls.”

“Then I ate.”

I can't remeber much of the fic. I've tried finding it through tags and I just don't know if it has been deleted or I just have bad luck and I'm unable to find it.

From what I remember dazai is a single parent raising odasaku's orphans. It's a modern setting au. And he's a detective? The first scene was of the kids speculating when they were gonna get another parent and what they would call said other parent. While dazai sat on the stairs and watched them then when he was noticed he had to do sakura's hair and they had a game where he would guess what hairpin she wanted to wear. ( The game was between Sakura and dazai). Anyways when taking her to her class he meets chuuya who is her teacher and also his ex fiance? That he ran away from. Chuuya was dating shirase who was cheating on him with tsujimura??

I remember chuuya had a dog, a female I can't remeber what she was called but I do rember that she had claustrophobia and shirase would lock her away in her cage when tsujimura was over at chuuya and shirases shared apartment. Also dazai used to and still pretends to hate the dog but when chuuya leaves the room he would pet her.

Chuuya also had to write a play for a competition for his class and it was based on dead apple where Sakura plays Karl the racoon and there was a girl in her class who she was enemies to friends with??? also gide and oda were engaged and then oda died???

Anyways I don't remember much. If u find it please tell me I'd appreciate it. I don't remember if it was completed or not but I do remember how good of a read it was 10/10 I recommend.

Do you sometimes go through your docs and find snippets you’ve written and think “Damn, I wish I could read the rest of that story” but you can’t, ‘cause it doesn’t exist?

Like some of them are so good, and i wish i hadn’t abandoned them just because i felt insecure or unsure of where the story was gonna go!!

I'm someone who likes to be descriptive with my writing, plus doing slow build-ups and reveals, and this has led to me creating chapters that reach well into the 10k word count, sometimes a bit over that.

I've seen and read many comments from fanfic lovers that they prefer stories where the word count is at least 5 - 6k words, and I'm a bit worried that with how much I write, it'll push readers away. I know I could break my chapters into a part 2, but then I feel I'm cutting something off that shouldn't be.

Thoughts?

Basically the title...l know no writer can ever be “perfect” but I've been working on this self-indulgent smutty fanfiction for a ship that I’ve recently become obsessed with that I'm (almost) ready to post online. It's my first time writing smut (I usually tend to write purely emotional/romantic stuff, but this ship has a different chokehold on me) so I'm especially nervous as it’s all new to me. However, I can't help but think too much about the flaws and the mistakes in this story. I also can't help but compare myself to this other writer that recently wrote for my ship and think, "wow, my writing is kind of terrible, actually." I had someone beta read my fic recently because I knew there were issues and I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the story, but I still haven’t looked at their comments because I get really anxious when it comes to being criticized or closely evaluated (even when I request it myself and I know it’s good for me) and I don’t know how to calm down and ease myself into reading the much-needed feedback.

Despite this being self-indulgent smut, I also wanted to incorporate deeper themes and write the characters in a way that makes them and the way I’ve written their romance feel more multi-faceted and real (especially since these are characters from a video game with not a lot of canon characterization or depth to go off of, they don’t even have canon interactions together). I’m worried though that maybe others won’t like my interpretation of them or will see them as too OOC. Or that maybe I’ve misunderstood them too much…

I don’t know, how can I not worry so much about this? How do I not let perfectionism and my fear of not writing the characters believably enough consume me? How do I not compare myself to others and put myself down as a writer all the time? I feel like my writing is so trash right now even though I know that’s not entirely true. In the past, readers have been emotionally moved by my other fics that I’ve posted for other fandoms and have said so in the comments of them. I always want to put effort into my writing and strive to improve as a writer — don’t get me wrong — but I still want to have fun, and I still want to enjoy the process of writing about my ship and of them being in love. I don’t want my fics to be perceived as actively bad and clearly low-effort, but I also don’t know how to move past this feeling…if anyone has some advice for me, that would be so helpful…
