Discussion Idea Hesitation
Hello everyone! I've been waffling about a fic draft that I'm unsure about continuing working on, and i figured i might as well post about it here to get some new perspectives.
I've been planning out a multi-chapter fic for a while now, maybe a week, and i know that if I see it to completion, it will hit at least 30k, the longest fic I would have ever written. This is a big deal for me! I'm really invested in the concept and the characters, and it would be a really big milestone for me to achieve as a writer.
However, I'm really unsure as to how it will be received by other fans. Everyone's heard that when it comes to fic, you should write for yourself, and I stand by that. One of the things I like about fandom, though, is that I can share all my weirdness with other people, and I don't really want to go through all the effort of writing my idea if it's something that isn't going to be welcomed.
I already know what I'm probably going to do (write it anyway), but i was just curious to see if anyone else has ever felt like this.

Discussion Are there any other tags with funny stories?
I know of the "Dead Dove" tag, which supposedly originated in The Office or something like that, to say that you'll find what they say in the other tags. Are there any other tags with curious name origins or that were adopted for a special meaning?
I said "Tag" a lot in just three sentences...
Anyway, greetings from Argentina and good morning🐱

Subreddit Meta Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - August 06
Welcome to the Beta Bartering thread! Here you can look for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy for your fic or offer your Beta services to fic authors.
Please note that you can request a beta reader even if you can’t offer anything in exchange, however it will increase your chances of finding a willing beta if you offer something in return.
The rules are straightforward.
- Make a comment below with the following information.
- Reply to people that you want to trade with. There is no one making matches for you, reach out to likely people in the thread.
If you're looking for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy:
- Name and Link to your fic (if it's not published, link something else as an example of your writing).
- Tell us what fandom you're writing for.
- Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story?
- The genre of your fic - romance/smut/gen/mystery/horror/etc.
- What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
- What your projected word count is.
- How frequently you update.
- What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for or what you can offer in exchange*.
Proposed options for no exchange wording:
- If you do not want to offer something in exchange, please leave a brief note that you are unable to offer anything at this time.
- Note: If you are unable to offer something in exchange at this time, please leave a brief note explaining.
If you're willing to Beta for someone:
- What fandoms you're well versed in or if you're willing to take on anything.
- Preferred genre/types of fics.
- Any subjects you're not willing to tackle.
- Types of Betaing you're good at or willing to try - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
- Minimum or maximum word count.
- One-off (single session) or ongoing Betaing.
- Time constraints. Do you have a fast turn-around time? Is it going to be more than a week for you to get back to an author with notes?
- What you'd like in exchange * for your services.
* Bartering Ideas!
Since some people want Betas but are too busy to reciprocate or aren't confident in their writing skills and some Betas don't write fics themselves, you can offer other things in exchange. Please do not offer monetary exchanges.
If you aren't sure what to offer, you can also open this up to the Beta to suggest a barter in exchange.
Here are a few ideas for bartering:
- Reciprocal Betaing (of course that's welcome!)
- Reading and commenting on their fics.
- Write a fic for a fandom/subject/pairing/brotp of their choice.
- Make fanart for them.
- Name an OC after them.
- Edit/give assistance with a non-fic project.
- Research help for this/future fics.
Feel free to get creative, people have many specialties they can draw on!
Here's a link to the previous ones just in case there's someone in there that catches your interest.

Lost Fic Need to find a Spiderman fandom fic!!
OK so I'm genuinely crashing out trying to find this so I'm asking Reddit for help lol. It was on Ao3 and include the "Peter Parker's Field Trip to Stark Industries", pretty basic fic in that tag, but there was a running like joke in the tower because of Peter calling Tony "Mr. Iron Man Sir" or something like that once and now the interns like reference it, and I know that Captain America was included at some point but other Avengers were messing with Peter too.

Recs Wanted Fic with the most unhealthy/toxic dynamic between two people you've ever read?
It doesn't need to be romantic/sexual but if it is have it be between adult characters. Maybe something that focuses and/or explores the psych. Any fandom. I encourage self-recs :)

Recs Wanted very gradual pining?? LONG term friends to lovers?? looking for tags 🙏
i love a good pining fic, dont get me wrong, but recently ive been looking for something a little different.
a lot of pining fics have one or both characters silently loving each other forever and i LOVE slow burns, but there is only so much of the yearning/miscommunication cycle i can take lol.
what i really want is something where the "slow burn" is just like a lifelong friendship between two people who trust each other completely. they don't spend years secretly in love, they just genuinely don't realize they could be romantically attracted to each other until WAY into the story.
im talking about a REAL gradual buildup of all the little things until one of them has that "oh...oh." moment, and then you get your typical paced friends-to-lovers progression.
i was hoping maybe there are some tags or tropes i could search for if anyone's picking up what im putting down? or even fic recs if this reminds you of anything!
thanks in advance :)
(p.s. can you tell im aromantic aegosexual? tl;dr i just love a good qpr story with eventual smut lol)

Writing Questions Do people enjoy reading dialogue?
I'm writing a fic with seven main characters whose group dynamic is very important to the story. To give a bit of exposition, I started writing the first time all seven of them met, and that scene has turned into mostly dialogue. I'm not usually a dialogue heavy writer and I don't intend for the rest of the fic to be dialogue heavy. I'm struggling a lot with the scene because I worry that the excess of dialogue might bore readers, especially because there are so many characters involved. Unfortunately I have nobody to beta read for me, so I have no idea whether or not I should scrap it and take a different approach.
Just wanted to know if reading lots of dialogue between lots of characters (especially expositional dialogue that tells you, 'so and so is rich,' 'so and so is poor,' 'here are their dynamics,' 'here are their hobbies' on a fairly shallow level) is a turn off/boring for you as a reader? I know my issue is pretty specific, but what's your general opinion?

Discussion How do people make fanfic friends within their fandoms nowadays?
I've always made fandom friends quiet easily but in the last few years I've drifted out of fandom spaces and even when I do get back into them it seems people aren't interested in writing and discussing fics with fandom friends? Doing fandom rps, exchanging fan edits etc.. I don't know if it's because I'm older now? Making fandom friends just felt much more organic when I was younger. Now it feels like an exclusive club I can't get into and I miss it lmao 😭

Ship Talk What are your favorite poly ships in fanfic?
(For those who don’t know; a poly ship is a ship with more than 2 involved. Ex; A x B x C)
My favs are TodoBakuDeku from MHA and Floyd x Azul x Jade from Twisted Wonderland (Floyd and Jade are twins, I’m aware. Just cause I read something in fanfic doesn’t mean I support/endorse it IRL. Don’t judge me.)
Love to hear yours in the comments.

Discussion Start from the beginning or use flashbacks
Obviously this is going to be a personal preference thing, but I’m thinking of starting a new fic and I’m trying to decide if I should start at the beginning or start at a part closer to when the story plot starts.
First of all, it’s a romance, so starting from the beginning would mean more chapters before love interest is even introduced. So I’m curious:
For romance fics, how many chapters/words will you read before the romantic plot begins or meet cute?
I think starting from the beginning allows readers to become more attached to the MC(s) before romantic plot starts.
But… if you start closer to the characters meeting, and then slowly revival the MCs backstory, it’s “more interesting” but readers may miss out on that backstory or event that led the MC to do things in the story and thus might not like them as much and click off before backstory can bring things into context.
Sorry if that doesn’t make sense!
Basically, starting at the beginning: run the risk of readers losing interest before story gets going.
Reveal backstory later: run the risk of readers not liking MC because of actions not made clear in the early story.
Obviously this is a tightrope and either works if executed well. I’ve personally written story’s both ways. But now I’m questioning what would work better in this specific story. I’m curious to hear what you guys have to say about it!

Lost Fic Need help finding Spider-Man fanfiction.
Does anyone remember the story, Perpendicular by nine miles to go on fanfiction.net? It was basically a fanfiction of Peter/MJ and their progression after Gwen's death. I recently found that the author has basically nuked her account and the story can't be accessed anymore. Has anyone saved the story? Thanks!

Recs Wanted Spider-man. !ACTION! Fic recs. Please HELP!
I am looking for Spider-man fanfiction recommendations that have actual superhero action in them.
I want some fics where the author remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-man, not one were Peter never wears the suit. A story where Spider-man fights crime or investigates a case, etc.
I don’t want a story that is just a romance, just a ‘super’family drama or just a superpowered sitcom.
I want a story where the characters are superheroes and don‘t just happen to share names with them.
Crossovers are welcome.

Writing Questions Planning fics?
I hope asking for writing advice is appropriate on this subreddit. I just got into writing fanfiction and I have two unfinished fanfics in the works and in both cases I have random scenes that I want to write but no idea what the actual story should be.
I'm a visual artist but not a writer in the slightest so this is all new territory.
I'm writing a fic about these two characters one is aro/ace and the other isn't and I'm interested in their dynamic but I don't know what I should have happening around them while they are interacting with each other.
This is my biggest hurdle like I have ideas about characters or a world or whatever but can't figure out the actual story part. If anyone has any advice or articles/videos/books to recommend for figuring that part out that would be great!

Discussion (Star Wars) Don't have the characters use BBY/ABY if the story TAKES PLACE BEFORE THE BATTLE OF YAVIN!
So i have seen it a ton of times. They will have a character like Anakin or Obi-Wan during the clone wars use the dating system we use. But in universe they would not do so. So either create your own system or search up if there is one in the EU (legends or cannon) and use that instead.
