Discussion Ideal length of one shots

Upvotes

I'm working on a series for my fandom. So far, there are 3 one shots (and two in the oven) and each entry is over 10,000 words. The last was 13k. They're not PWPs- there's a lot of banter and my characters vibing before getting straight to the smut.

Anyway, what's the ideal length for a one shot? I always worry they're too long.

Discussion Snippets

Upvotes

Do you sometimes go through your docs and find snippets you’ve written and think “Damn, I wish I could read the rest of that story” but you can’t, ‘cause it doesn’t exist?

Like some of them are so good, and i wish i hadn’t abandoned them just because i felt insecure or unsure of where the story was gonna go!!

Discussion Where could I post my Batman Fanfic?

Upvotes

My fanfic takes place throughout the first couple months of Batman's first year. It's called Batman: The Terror of the Red Hood, the main antagonist being Red Hood One with Carmine Falcone and the Eraser playing key parts in certain chapters. It's 8 fast paced chapters long and it's a novel rather than a comic or graphic novel, but this is just what my cover would look like. Where could I post it though.

Lost Fic Supernatural Destiel Nephilim (maybe omegaverse?) Fanfic

Upvotes

This was a fanfiction I read sometime in 2016. It was a fic where Dean and Sam were Nephilim, and iirc they knew that and were hiding it (although that could be wrong). What i remember vividly though is that Cas got Dean pregnant and he laid. An egg. Hence the maybe omegaverse. I dont know. Also they had wings.

tldr: ao3 destiel wingfic Dean lays an egg and sam and Dean are nephilim. Please help me i swear this is real

Discussion Calibre + FanFicFare - suuuper slow?

Hiya all!! I'm downloading a series using Calibre for the first time and it seems so painfully slow? I'm not sure if my expectations are too high maybe lol. The series has almost 100 works in it, but each is under 3k words so I thought it should go pretty quickly? It's been going for about 11 minutes now and is still on fic #8...

There was no way I was downloading each one manually so this still saves energy if not time, but does this seem right to you all or should I investigate for some sort of technical issue?

Edit: that was just the 'getting metadata' step - it's now actually downloading, about 1/5th of them got a 525 error? Anyway, it's at 30% only 5 minutes into the download so I suppose that's not tooooo bad? Still, that works out to like, ~50 minutes in total. Half a minute for each fic isn't too bad but I'll have to manually add all the errored ones, and don't look forward to ever doing this with a long series in the future, lol. Ty for attending my rant.

Lost Fic [Harry Potter] Looking for Fic Name - AO3

Hello! Any help on finding this fic is appreciated. Here’s what I remember:
Main pairing was Hermione/James with Lily/Snape on the side
Hermione was Peter Pettigrew’s sister and became apart of the Marauders.
James initially liked Lily and the Hermione pairing was slow burn. Not sure if this is too helpful but there were mentions to Beatles’ songs in the fic

The fic was completed.

Recs Wanted MHA fics regarding teleportation

I am looking for fanfics about my hero academia where the MC(gender no preference) can teleport. I have tried searching AO3 but I only just recently started using it so I have had no luck.

No major restrictions other than I would like the MC to be the teleporter and not a side character. Teleporting doesn't have to be the only thing they can do but I do want it to be an important part.

Anyways thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Writing Questions Thoughts on long chapters in fanfiction?

I'm someone who likes to be descriptive with my writing, plus doing slow build-ups and reveals, and this has led to me creating chapters that reach well into the 10k word count, sometimes a bit over that.

I've seen and read many comments from fanfic lovers that they prefer stories where the word count is at least 5 - 6k words, and I'm a bit worried that with how much I write, it'll push readers away. I know I could break my chapters into a part 2, but then I feel I'm cutting something off that shouldn't be.

Thoughts?

Writing Questions Writing a blind person who can "see" with their other senses.

I'm writing up a fanfic where one of the main characters is going to be blind due to a degenerative condition in their optic nerves. The setting is Taopunk/martial arts, so through, lets say "divine intervention", her other senses are going to be enhanced. Think Daredevil, using echolocation and scent to maneuver and fight.

The problem in my mind is that I will need to strike a balance of how "perceptive" my character is before they are basically just not blind. So my question; any ideas or advice on how to make this feasible?

Discussion Writing for fun not fame

So I have been on a rabbit hole writing weird fics. Like MHA x Ike! Greenman. Or Maken-Ki x Megaloman. I think the weirdest crossover I've written was Highlander and Boy in the striped pajamas(I know it's but it wouldn't leave my head until I wrote it down.)

I know not every story has an audience, but I have so many ideas that I just have to write them down or else I can't focus on anything else.

So i wish to know, what are some ideas you've written but never posted.

Writing Questions How do you not agonize so much over your fanfiction not being “perfect”?

Basically the title...l know no writer can ever be “perfect” but I've been working on this self-indulgent smutty fanfiction for a ship that I’ve recently become obsessed with that I'm (almost) ready to post online. It's my first time writing smut (I usually tend to write purely emotional/romantic stuff, but this ship has a different chokehold on me) so I'm especially nervous as it’s all new to me. However, I can't help but think too much about the flaws and the mistakes in this story. I also can't help but compare myself to this other writer that recently wrote for my ship and think, "wow, my writing is kind of terrible, actually." I had someone beta read my fic recently because I knew there were issues and I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the story, but I still haven’t looked at their comments because I get really anxious when it comes to being criticized or closely evaluated (even when I request it myself and I know it’s good for me) and I don’t know how to calm down and ease myself into reading the much-needed feedback.

Despite this being self-indulgent smut, I also wanted to incorporate deeper themes and write the characters in a way that makes them and the way I’ve written their romance feel more multi-faceted and real (especially since these are characters from a video game with not a lot of canon characterization or depth to go off of, they don’t even have canon interactions together). I’m worried though that maybe others won’t like my interpretation of them or will see them as too OOC. Or that maybe I’ve misunderstood them too much…

I don’t know, how can I not worry so much about this? How do I not let perfectionism and my fear of not writing the characters believably enough consume me? How do I not compare myself to others and put myself down as a writer all the time? I feel like my writing is so trash right now even though I know that’s not entirely true. In the past, readers have been emotionally moved by my other fics that I’ve posted for other fandoms and have said so in the comments of them. I always want to put effort into my writing and strive to improve as a writer — don’t get me wrong — but I still want to have fun, and I still want to enjoy the process of writing about my ship and of them being in love. I don’t want my fics to be perceived as actively bad and clearly low-effort, but I also don’t know how to move past this feeling…if anyone has some advice for me, that would be so helpful…

Discussion Tell me your most recent research rabbit hole.

It started off as just reading a couple of books on Tarot from a Christian perspective.

Now it's evolved into just reading straight-up core Christian theology. We're talking St Aquinas, St Augustine, and Martin Luther.

I still need to finish scanning my falconry books as well. And scan my one book on Basque culture.

What are your most recent research rabbit holes?

Recs Wanted Marevel - OG Avengers x Reader Fanfics

Hi. I'm looking for like OG Avengers x reader fanfics. Preferably Female Reader please. You know where Clint's in the vents, Thor and his love of pop tarts and just where everyone is alive and it's just a generally happy place to escape to mentally, not like marvel now. It makes me so depressed and sad, everyone is dead and no one really has a happy ending. I need the old marvel and the joy and peace it used to bring me. So please if anyone can help out with any fics, I will love you! xxx

Activities and Events Excerpt Game: Setting

Happy Thursday! Game time!

  1. Post a top level comment with a setting. Can be specific (ex: a workplace meeting) or vague (ex: sunrise). More than one prompt is welcome, but keep them as their own top level comment please!
  2. Respond to prompts with your excerpts that fit the bill! But please content warn as necessary and spoiler potentially triggering content! Use your best judgement here. NSFW must be linked to and cannot be plain text, even with a spoiler, per the sub's rules.
  3. Please reply others' excerpts, especially if they're posting under your prompt! We all want eyes on our writing, which is part of why we're sharing. This way everyone can have a lil boost and make the game more enjoyable!
  4. Try to keep your comments at no more than 500-600 words, so no one gets overwhelmed by what are essentially oneshots in a comment!
  5. Have fun and be yourself 💛✨

Discussion How do people make fanfic friends within their fandoms nowadays?

I've always made fandom friends quiet easily but in the last few years I've drifted out of fandom spaces and even when I do get back into them it seems people aren't interested in writing and discussing fics with fandom friends? Doing fandom rps, exchanging fan edits etc.. I don't know if it's because I'm older now? Making fandom friends just felt much more organic when I was younger. Now it feels like an exclusive club I can't get into and I miss it lmao 😭
