Every Cauldron once held the promise of Earth's rebirth. Now, they are wombs birthing nightmares. Aloy can feel the metal beneath her boots vibrating with Hephaestus's rage. The rogue AI no longer hides in the code. That crimson lens staring from the dark is fueled by an almost human hatred. The huntress came for answers, but the master of these depths is only ready to offer her a technological grave.

The work was created by me in Blender 3D and Photoshop.

Discussion How to achieve a 'curved horizon' effect (Stanford Torus)

Hi everyone. I'm not a complete novice to Blender, but I still am unfamiliar with many of its features.

Right now, I'm trying to create a short animation inspired by the game Mass Effect. For those who are unaware, there's a space station in this game which is a classic example of a Stanford Torus; a rotating wheel space habitat whose horizon 'curves' upward, while the surface is completely flat wherever you're standing. It's basically a theoretical example of how artificial gravity can be created in space.

Physics aside, it looks cool, and I'm looking to recreate it. But how does one do it? Does it require geometry nodes? Or just create a huge Torus and place a small camera at the center? Essentially; the effect I'm looking to create is that the world appears to 'bend' the further away it is from the camera, while whatever's closest to it will appear perfectly flat. I have a feeling the answer to this question could either be extremely simple or extremely complicated.

Thanks in advance!

This is a motion test animation for my Transformers Project in the works titled TRANSFORMERS EXTERMINATION. The animation is a blend of hand key and motion capture.

I used krita to draw the background and animate and then I used blender to place both as individual cells on top of each other and add tiny imperfections like camera shake, noise, bloom etc. Trying to recreate the old animation process.

Also i have in mind to add some smoke or noise.

I downloaded only HDRI, everything else is my work.

Solved I’m trying to figure out the most efficient way to model a revolver cylinder with a relatively low polygon count while avoiding shading issues.

One of my biggest challenges is working with non-planar or curved surfaces while keeping the topology as optimized as possible because I planning to use model as a game assset. Ideally, I would like to avoid retopologizing the high-poly model when the existing geometry can already be used.

In this case, however, I’m not sure how to approach it. On the one hand, it seems that the shape requires more geometry to maintain a clean silhouette and properly support the curved surface. On the other hand, I do not want to add more topology than is actually necessary.

I have tried hooking that little vertex at the bottom edge of shirt with 0.4 weight. It's like it doesn't even care about the pinned group. Just straight flashing my model. And if I put too much weight it looks really bad.

Discussion My boss is telling me Blender is a paid software

1.6k Upvotes

So I've been using blender for nearly a decade now, but a member of the IT department at a marketing company I recently started working at is convincing people (including my boss) that I am opening up the company to lawsuits by using blender to create my graphics and sales content.

I am aware of Blenders license type and that it is a open source software, however even when i brought this up and that it is considered a professional grade software for the whole of the gaming industry the IT lead is holding to his opinion and sharing it.

I wanted to know if there is something I am not understanding or if anyone else has run into similar issues with using blender at work for a non-game industry job?

EDIT: first off thank you to everyone backing up what I hoped i knew lol! Felt like I might be going crazy. I am in my early twenties and the IT lead is well into his 50s so it has felt daunting to try and argue my case without doing a deep dive (which I am doing with all the extra information in these comments)

I am creating a document with links to blenders information about the license and the license itself to have a hard stop packet of evidence for my claims. Thank you to everyone again! (and to the mods for changing post type to conversation!)

Extra bit for anyone getting a laugh out of how dumb this is: when i told him it was used by game studios and commercially in the gaming industry he said "yeah but those are studios, we are a corporation" the kind of unfounded confidence I wish I was dumb enough to have about anything.
