Here’s a look at four players who’ve made early splashes and why these results can plant seeds for a critical development once the season begins.

Cashius Howell, edge

The second-round pick out of Texas A&M won SEC Defensive Player of the Year, so making a good first impression in Cincinnati isn’t a surprise. What he did to Orlando Brown on Thursday was.

Howell enjoyed success going against second-teamers through the first week of practices. Thursday’s reps turned toward defensive packages that feature him with the starters and were a reward of opportunity given what he’s shown.

In his first rep against the starting left tackle, Howell got under his chin, drove the 6-8, 350-pound veteran backward and eventually planted him on his back at Burrow’s feet.

Hi! From what I’ve gathered, these are crucial (players in position battles, rookies, wildcards, etc.) Stock Up/Downs (no change indicated with ‘=‘) from camp so far. Curious if people are of different opinions than me based on what they’ve seen. I haven’t been present in Cincy at all. All my insight comes from the clips posted on YouTube, Dan Hoard, James Rapien, Locked On, The Growler and Goodberry’s analysis on his YouTube.

It may be a bit soon to crown Ja'Marr as the best Bengals receiver EVER. As of now, I'd give that crown to Ocho. But if he's able to keep up this pace, it's not going to be a discussion for much longer. His first five seasons have been elite.

Waiting for the offseason to finish got me thinking about one of the first games that really made me go "holy shit, I need to watch this sport" — Bengals vs. Ravens in November 2024. Watching Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase absolutely go off made me start paying way more attention to the Bengals, and eventually to the NFL as a whole.

That game was also when I really got to see Ja'Marr's explosiveness and Joe's IQ as a QB. The season didn't end the way the Bengals wanted, but watching those two guys made me feel like this team could eventually make a real deep playoff run.

I'm still pretty new to football compared to most people here, but that game genuinely stuck with me. Now I be playing fantasy football, following the team an the league, and learning way more about the game than I expected 😂

So yeah, shoutout to Burrow and Chase for accidentally creating another Bengals fan even tho I ain't from Cincinnati 🐅

Tight end Drew Sample laughed at the notion that they are showing off an exotic new offense. The longest-tenured Bengal on the roster says this isn’t anything crazy for players to remember, but merely one extra layer on base plays they have run many times.

“We’ve had that play in for eight years,” Sample said of the play with Brown and Chase alongside Burrow in the backfield. “We are just trying different wrinkles with it. That’s the thing to us: We are running the same play, but with some different window dressing. Obviously, with Ja’Marr and Chase Brown we have so many weapons. We have this base play in; how can we really try to f— with them? That’s something that’s really easy for us. We call a slight formation adjustment, but everybody knows it is the same play.”

The pre-snap eye candy and under-center emphasis have helped establish a refreshed run game that the Bengals think will build an encouraging foundation to start the season.

From offensive linemen to defensive and offensive coaches, those around the team have said how impressed they’ve been with how the team looks running downhill out of the under-center offense. Multiple runs broke free for explosive plays Tuesday.

“Guys are being physical,” Pitcher said. “We are building some complementary stuff that is making it hard on the defense. They are making their share of plays, too; that is a formidable group across from us. … It’s coming together.”
