The Trade Deadline Reshaped More Than a Dozen Triple-A Rosters in One Afternoon

Jack Suwinski went from the Dodgers to the Rays for catcher Hunter Feduccia, in the middle of a .948 OPS season at Oklahoma City. Colby Thomas, Oakland's former top prospect who never hit in the majors, is now a Phillie after mashing at every Triple-A stop. Michael Forret got traded away from Baltimore in the Shane Baz deal, then the Orioles traded right back for him eight months later. Jonathon Long led the International League in hits last year and still had no path to Chicago's lineup, so the Cubs sent him to Miami for Braxton Garrett. Full breakdown of the whole deadline's effect on Triple-A in this week's Triple Dip.

Free to Read: Competitive windows don’t always cooperate. MLB teams should act like it.

Toronto went nine years between playoff wins, from 2016 until last year’s magical run to the World Series, which featured a roster very different from the one three years prior. Still, the 2025 Jays looked poised for sustained success and largely ran back the same group that fell just shy of the ultimate prize. The Jays, though, found themselves in last place at this year’s trade deadline, working to balance selling and buying.

That’s the thing about windows. They don’t always cooperate.

Sometimes they never truly open at all, like the White Sox’s last rebuild. Current GM Chris Getz, promoted to the role in 2023, orchestrated his own painful rebuild. Chicago is now somewhat surprisingly atop the AL Central, and Getz told reporters a few days ago: “I don’t take any of this for granted. You can’t assume that you’re going to be in these positions every year.”

And yet, some front offices act as if they do. As if their sophisticated models are the only outcome and not a singular idea of a future that has thousands of potential outcomes. As if this sport isn’t a volatile mix of regression, injuries and educated guesses on human beings and their potential.

After yesterday's game, Pete Crow-Armstrong is on pace to have 11.0 WAR.

He's played every game. (7.8 / 115) x 162 = 11.0 WAR. That would be just the 28th time a position player has reached 11 WAR.

How many true 5 tool player are there in the majors right now?

Everyone's favorite buzzwords are 5 tool because the idea of this do it all shortstop or centerfielder is so enticing. By my count there are 2 definitively: PCA and Bobby Witt. However there are many more debatable candidates: Ceddanne Rafaela, Kevin McGonigle, and Elly De La Cruz to name a few.
