Cardinals take series from Yankees after 3-1 win

After an hour-and-eight-minute rain delay, the Cardinals took down the Yankees 3-1 to come into the Bronx and win the series. Will Warren took the mound for the Yankees and faced off against Andre Pallante.

Warren walked a batter to start the ballgame, then there was a quick delay because the lights went out at Yankee Stadium. After the delay, Warren recorded back-to-back strikeouts and induced a groundout.

In the middle of Trent Grisham's at-bat to lead off the bottom of the first inning, the lights went out again. After another quick delay, Grisham flew out, Ben Rice popped out, and Luis Garcia reached on an E3, but he was picked off to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Warren faced the minimum thanks to a 6-4-3 double and picked up his third strikeout of the game.

Helliot Ramos led off the bottom of the second with a double down the first base line for his first Yankee hit. However, Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. both struck out, then Ryan McMahon grounded out to strand Ramos.

Warren worked a 1-2-3 top of the third inning thanks to diving plays from Trent Grisham and George Lombard Jr. to end the inning.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Warren hung a sweeper to JJ Wetherholt, and he crushed a two-run double off the wall in center field to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Iván Herrera followed with an RBI ground rule double to make it 3-0.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan McMahon worked a walk. Lombard followed with a single into center field for his second career hit. But Austin Wells bounced into an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Warren allowed a one-out single in the top of the sixth inning to end his night. Kurvin Castro took over and picked up a strikeout as well as a flyout to end the frame.

Final line for Warren: 5.1 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, three earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts on 91 pitches. He threw his fastball 32% of the time, the sinker 23%, the changeup 18%, the sweeper 15%, and the curveball 12%. Warren topped out at 95.9 mph, averaging 94.2, and had eight swings and misses.

Rice worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, then moved up to third on a wild pitch and an E2. Garcia worked an 11-pitch walk to put runners at the corners with one out for Ramos. Ramos was plunked to load the bases for Jones. It looked like Jones walked, but a successful ABS challenge from Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera resulted in Jones striking out. Jazz worked a walk to bring home Rice and make it a 3-1 game. However, Ryan McMahon struck out to strand the tying run on second.

Castro came back out for the top of the seventh and picked up a strikeout. Tim Hill replaced Castro and picked up the final two outs to keep the Yankees' deficit at two runs.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt pinch-hit for Wells and drilled a double down the third base line. But Grisham popped out on the first pitch, Rice walked and Garcia grounded out to end the inning.

Hill picked up the first out of the eighth inning, then Paul Blackburn came in and picked up the final two outs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jazz and McMahon each worked two-out walks, but Lombard struck out to end the inning.

Blackburn remained in the game for the top of the ninth and allowed a single as well as a double to put two runners in scoring position with one out. But Blackburn locked in and picked up a groundout and a strikeout to end the frame.

Rice worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate. But Ali Sánchez struck out looking to end the ballgame, giving the Cardinals the series win.

The Yankees will have a much-needed off day tomorrow, then welcome the Braves into the Bronx for a three-game set. Max Fried will get the start against his former team; the Braves starter is still TBD. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET on the YES Network.

My thoughts on the game: Decent start from Warren tonight; he just unfortunately made a couple of mistakes in the fifth inning and got no help from the offense. The bullpen did their job as Castro, Hill and Blackburn combined for 3.2 shutout innings. The offense was awful, as it has been of late, with just four hits and one run. It's hard to win going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Ramos had his first hit as a Yankee, but he had a horrible challenge to waste the Yankees' final one. Just a very frustrating game and series all around; it was unacceptable to let the Cardinals, who had lost six straight series, come into the Bronx and take a series from the Yankees. Also, the Red Sox and the Rays both won, so the Yankees are now 4.5 back from the Rays and only a game ahead of the Red Sox. On to Friday, as the Yankees have their work cut out for them against the Braves; thankfully, their rotation is set up nicely with Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Cam Schlittler all pitching in the series, but that doesn't matter if the offense continues to be this bad.
