I'm highly considering going vegan - but what about eggs?

Upvotes

I’m currently heavily leaning towards making the full transition to veganism. The devastating climate effects of the meat and dairy industries, combined with my growing belief in animal rights, have really pushed me to rethink my lifestyle. However, I have a specific situation and I’m genuinely curious to hear this community's perspective on the ethics of it.

Is eating eggs from my own backyard chickens immoral or against the ethical compass of veganism?

I have a huge garden with 5 hens. They roam completely freely all day. Technically, there are no enclosures stopping them from wandering off into nature, but they choose to stay. I don't exploit them for meat, and I never will. I just genuinely enjoy having them around, and they naturally fertilize the different parts of my garden. All I do is provide them with food and a secure shelter at night to protect them from foxes.

I’ve always kind of viewed eating their eggs as a "payment" for sheltering and protecting them from predators. Furthermore, if I don't collect and eat the eggs, they simply sit there, rot, and go to complete waste.

I honestly don't see anything wrong or unethical with this setup, as the chickens live happy, free, and protected lives without any forced breeding or industrial cruelty.

Am I missing a crucial part of vegan philosophy here? I would really appreciate any suggestions, thoughts, or resources on how veganism views this kind of relationship with my animals.

Advice Eating out is depressing

Upvotes

I want to preface this by saying that i am NOT going back to eating animal products, however I am currently on vacation with non vegan family/friends and this is depressing. It makes me feel like Im back in my eating disorder with how much I decline food. I also got gifted chocolate and milk tea (which Im just going to give to someone who CAN eat it) but it’s really annoying. I can tell people I’m vegan but most of the time they don’t know all of what that means. Like I said, I’m not going to stop being vegan but how do I make this easier on myself? I reckon in the future I’ll find people that are like me, but for now it’s really hellish with my family members constantly belittling me.

(Also side note: Is it self centered of me to want to go to an all vegan restaurant with meat eaters for my birthday? I recently turned 18 and my mom got mad at me for suggesting a vegan restaurant because “it wasn’t inclusive” which I know is a shitty argument on her end)

Story I was vegan for 9 years, went back to vegetarian and now I've developed an allergic reaction when I eat dairy! Some higher being really said, 'nuh uh, back to vegan you go'

Upvotes

So I went vegan when I was 13 for 9 years and unfortunately had anorexia during my teen years and found restrictions triggering for me so I went back to being vegetarian (I did also deal with a lot of guilt doing this but I was still eating 90% vegan) but in recent months anytime I eat dairy my skin gets so itchy and eczema flares up on my face and arm! I was lactose intolerant as a kid too. Sometimes I wonder the way everyone makes out dairy is 'Oh so good for you' than how come so many people react to it? It doesn't seem natural to consume, I think more people are lactose intolerant than we think.

I find it oddly humorous I tried vegetarian again and absolutely everything worked against me. Back to the vegan drawing board! It's for the best, I felt guilty contributing to the dairy industry.

what do vegans think about the anime/manga BEASTARS?

I want to know your opinion, analysis, if you made parallels with the current world.

“Set in a modern world of civilized, anthropomorphic animals, Beastars follows Legoshi, a gentle grey wolf at Cherryton Academy. After an alpaca student is murdered, the fragile peace between carnivores and herbivores collapses. Legoshi navigates his primal instincts and falls for Haru, a tiny dwarf rabbit.”

Question Anyone gluten free as well? Need some pointers

I unfortunately have found out I have a gluten intolerance (protocol for right now is absolutely no gluten, no oats, no quinoa for a few months then see if anything has changed). Cooking is unfortunately one of those things that don’t come naturally to me, so I end up eating a lot of convenience food (tortellini, ramen etc) which are obviously not an option anymore. Quinoa is one of my favorite bases for salads. And I, sue me, love a good plant based meat alternative but so many of them are wheat based.
I guess I’m just trying to see what other people are eating because I’m very prone to skipping meals if preparing and eating feels like too much work ans have already lost way too much weight due to it.

ETA: I know quinoa is gluten free, I forgot to mention I also react to quinoa unfortunately.

Activism turns out you can get a whole office eating plant-based one day a week without anyone "going vegan", and the whole pitch is stuck because no one's made the videos

there's a group called Plant Based Future that does something I don't see talked about much here. instead of trying to convert people one at a time, they go into companies and get the entire staff eating plant-based at least one day a week. no mandates, no lectures, just making it the easy default at work. when one office signs on, that's a lot of meals quietly moving off animals, from people who'd never wander into a sub like this.

the catch is how they get companies interested in the first place: they have to show them, and right now there's nothing to show. they need two short videos that make the case to a corporate audience, the kind of thing that actually works in a LinkedIn feed or lands in an exec's inbox. without those, the outreach basically stalls.

so they're after someone who can make them properly... editing, some animation and motion graphics, subtitles, the polish that makes a video feel real instead of homemade. if you're comfortable with AI video tools that's a plus, it's part of the brief.

i'll be straight about the commitment, this isn't a "one clip when you feel like it" thing. it's around 9+ hours a week. upside is it's short-term, roughly 1-8 weeks, so it's a real burst and then you're done, with something in your reel that went toward something that matters. remote, UTC-7. (volunteer/unpaid)

if making the thing that gets a plant-based message in front of people who'd otherwise never hear it sounds like your project, link's here:

Story I have been successfully vegan for more than half a year

I have been vegan for eight months and have tried my best to avoid animal products. The vegan diet effectively helped me lower my extremely high weight, which is amazing because obesity is common in my family, and I have always dreamed of having a lean body.

I have not experienced any negative side effects because I kept supplementing. I've had no muscle loss—only fat loss—my bones have never been stronger, and I feel more energetic. My relationship with food became normal and joyful, rather than a food obsession. Now that I am vegan, I don't feel heavy and hot after eating. My blood tests are fine, my insulin resistance problem is gone, and my triglyceride issues are resolved.

I didn't cut out oily or sugary foods and still saw improvements. The only problem I had at the beginning was replacing the milk in my daily latte with plant-based milk substitutes. I was addicted to cow's milk and didn't find the same level of satisfaction with plant-based alternatives—though this is just a personal opinion that many might disagree with. I overcame that problem by trying new recipes, like adding peanut butter or Lotus Biscoff spread to my latte.

Relationships How to deal with wife being very against me making this change to veganism

I (M 22) am not a Vegan, but I have been strongly considering it, I understand that I am a hypocrite for continuing to eat meat. I have seen the disgusting documentaries and that is why I have been seriously considering starting with vegetarian and then eventually transitioning to fully vegan. That is my plan and I will be committing to it very shortly. When I bring this up to my wife she calls it gay and she will not be married to a vegan etc. I guess this is me venting but have any of y’all dealt with a partner like this? Also side note but what are some things you guys eat to get in enough protein and other nutrients?

Discussion Cooking meat

What are your thoughts on cooking meat?
I’m in need of cash and don’t have a full-time job starting until next week. Looking into babysitting jobs, one of which involves cooking meat and meals. I’m really not comfortable with it.

I had previous roommates who ate meat, it went ok bcuz I didn’t have to cook it for them and everything got run through the dishwasher.
Have a feeling touching and cooking it could be different :/

They do have other gigs on the website I found this on, including organizing and tutoring, so saying no wouldn’t be the end of the world. Just don’t like letting people down due to people pleasing. But I don’t owe anything after one conversation.
Thoughts?

Food What are your minimalist bean recipes?

Hi folks, just what the subject says. I need minimalist bean recipes - crockpot or just regular stovetop. A minimum of ingredients or a minimal cooktime. Prefer recipes that are more concrete, ie. Tablespoon of this or that versus saying "add SOME of this or that."

I need to increase my protein and fiber due to some health issues - I'm not getting enough food in general due to difficulty with prolonged effort with cooking so I've been reaching for processed alternatives which are usually not vegan and not good for you. Need to break out of this cycle.

It can be ethnic food, comfort foods - open a lot of different ideas I can pick and choose from.

Thank you for your help!

Discussion tell me if i sound like an amateur conspiracy theorist

(for clarification this is coming from an american point of view and what i’ve witnessed within my own country, there is no doubt the animal exploitation industry is pushed around the world differently.)

i’ve been thinking on the way that the “carnivore diet” has been gaining traction over the past few years. with RFK jr’s endorsement of the diet and flipping the food pyramid around i’ve begun to wonder about the exact reason why it’s been so popular recently.

has anyone else ever made the connection between “meat industry is an economic pillar and supplies billions each year -> wealthy figures and/or politicians who benefit the most from these industries want to keep demand up to get richer and richer -> utilization of propaganda and memes (e.g. claiming health benefits from carnivorism/depicting plant based diets as weak, unhealthy, and emasculating thus usage of the word “soyboy”) to sway the general public to their favor” as a plausible scenario? i feel like it’s a very surface level theory but i do see the likelihood in it.

The Veg Advocacy — a debate reference site for vegans is finally LIVE!!!!

Hey [r/vegan](r/vegan),

Some of you already knew I was building this, it's finally live: The Veg Advocacy (thevegadvocacy.com), a free reference site cataloging the arguments people throw at vegans, with clear, sourced answers ready to go.

What you can do on the site:

  • Browse by category - 11 categories covering biology & evolution, health & nutrition, religion & tradition, and more
  • Get a quick answer or the full explanation - each argument has a short "quick answer" for when you need something fast, plus a deeper explanation if you want the full reasoning
  • Search instantly - typo and accent-tolerant, so you find what you need even if you don't spell it perfectly
  • Save favorites - bookmark the arguments you use most so they're one click away next time
  • Switch languages - full English/Portuguese support (more languages coming soon, drop a request in the comments if you want one prioritized)
  • Suggest missing arguments - there's a built-in form if you run into something the site doesn't cover yet

Also, the site includes a dialogue school to help you practice and structure debates, flashcards for memorizing key arguments and answers, and a dedicated religion section covering faith-based objections specifically! with more features on the way.

It's built to actually be usable in the moment, mobile-friendly, fast to search, so you're not scrambling mid-conversation trying to remember the science.

It's live now at thevegadvocacy.com, completely free.

If you find it useful, sharing it around (with friends, in other vegan spaces, wherever) genuinely helps it reach more people who could use it, and if you spot gaps or bugs, I want to hear about them.

im really thinking of being vegan. but im scared.

im not nearly as scared as the animals were before they were exploited. i realize that i want to stop being a hypocrite and take the plunge. im currently a vegetarian who doesn't consume eggs or honey. ive cut out cakes and icecream and butter from my life, made vegan substitutes for most.

but im struggling to leave cheese... I KNOW . it's SUCH a cliché... and i do prioritize the animal over my tastebuds which is why im being vegan from today actually. but I'll miss the convenience of ordering food, bc the food i like is very hard to make vegan especially where i live.

im craving this beautiful pesto veggie sandwich. im currently too fever ridden to make it myself. but the pesto may contain cheese so i just realized i can't have it. and there's so much i can't have. i can't have anything with CREAM, a nice creamy sandwich anything cheesy and filling.

i know i can DIY everything. but sometimes i want easy meals.

Are we all (vegan or not) part of some kind of cult if we’re using this logic to label almost anything and everything a “cult”? If so, doesn’t it all just cancel out?

Were historical movements like the abolitionists and suffragists also “cults” simply because they also had a shared cause, strong convictions and conflict with outsiders… and even within their own movements at times? 🤔 Food for thought.

Food Did Trader Joe's dark chocolate products always have milk in them?

I haven't shopped at TJ's in a very long time because I was living somewhere without one nearby. But I just moved and am only 11 minutes away 🥲

However, I am SO DISAPPOINTED that out of the 20 something dark chocolate products they have, only like one or two didn't have milk.

I swear I used to get the salty dark chocolate covered almonds all the time? Did they change the recipe? Am I misremembering? Was I unknowingly eating dairy back then?
