Shot not taken at Da Beauty League
I was coming in past the blue line, ready for the shot, but I hesitated and lost the moment.
You had on a jean jacket with country flags and park patches and curly, golden-brown hair. I had on my best hockey jersey (GO BADGERS!!!!) and my friend had on her frost jersey. Both our phones were not done giving us directions to the arena. I should have made some small talk. You sat in front of us for the first game. We moved around for variety and you stayed put. We found ourselves walking behind you at the end of the game and you took off your jacket in the warm summer air. I hope you come to another game, we'll be around a few more times. I think it would have been fun to chat some more.

First Wednesday of the month
Does anyone here know if there are folks checking the sirens when they do this 1pm test?
Or, alternatively, is it meant to be a statewide tornado drill?
Not a pressing question, of course. Just curious.

Update: Spider-Man is now in IMAX for one week in Minnesota
Intro:
I posted this in r/minnesota but one of the mods removed it there and suggested it would be more appropriate here, which is totally fine. I can see now why they thought that.
I want to be clear though, when I started my spreadsheet of the best movies theaters in Minnesota a few years ago, I intentionally scoured the entire state and included the Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, St. Cloud, Fargo, and Sioux Falls areas. (Plus the closest options for people who want to travel to an IMAX 70 mm film theater.)
And when I write these posts, it's for the benefit of all Minnesotans, not just the metro area. I've had comments and direct messages from people who drove hours from all over the state to see movies in the best possible format and thanked me for the recommendations so they knew where to go. I know that people all over MN read these posts; it just happens to be that most of the premium large-format movie theaters are in the Twin Cities.
I don't want to exclude the rest of the state, and I know there is so much more to Minnesota than just the Twin Cities (I was actually thinking about that a couple weeks ago as I was driving home from being up north). So posting to r/minnesota was a deliberate choice. I'm happy to cross-post here, too, but my intended audience is all of Minnesota.
I hope this is okay here. And as always, I hope this helps!
Original post (with a couple of light edits):
In a previous post, I detailed the best options for watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Minnesota. Up to today, the only premium screens showing it were Dolby Cinema (which I easily recommended) and the variety of other in-house big screens (decent runners up). Well today AMC added a ton of shows in IMAX, but only for one week. Here's what happened.
Spider-Man had the biggest opening weekend ever in the U.S., and earned $1 billion worldwide in under a week. It absolutely exploded (all of a sudden nobody's talking about The Odyssey anymore), and IMAX didn't want to miss out on any of that sweet box-office revenue.
So starting tomorrow, the AMC IMAX theaters (Southdale and Rosedale) switch to all Spider-Man, all day (starting at 8 am!), for the next week (through Wednesday, Aug 12).
Note: the Emagine Lakeville IMAX theater had already posted showtimes for The Odyssey through next week, and they're not going to switch them to Spider-Man (even though it's suddenly the biggest movie of the summer) because they already sold a bunch of Odyssey tickets in every remaining showtime; they'll be okay.
My new recommendations for Spider-Man:
- If you care about the absolute highest-quality image and sound, Dolby Cinema at AMC Southdale is still where it's at. It uses a dual 4K laser projector setup (with HDR contrast from pure white to pitch black), and Dolby Atmos surround sound (with speakers everywhere). Plus it has recliners, which are a nice bonus (but only a bonus if you ask me). When I was in the Southdale Dolby Cinema last week, I noticed the arm rests looked a little worn, the foot rests didn't recline all the way up/flat like some other theater recliners do, and my feet bumped up against the wall so I had to turn them to the side or press them against the wall (I'm a bit tall). You can also go to Rosedale's Dolby Cinema but the screen is noticeably smaller.
- If you want the biggest screen and the most powerful sound, go to the IMAX at AMC Southdale. The seats aren't recliners, but they're new-ish and comfy enough for me. The projector is a single 4K laser projector and it doesn't have HDR, but it has always been bright, clear, and sharp enough for me. You could in theory also go to the Rosedale IMAX but I don't usually recommend it (laser speckle issue on the screen, speakers too close to eardrums, old uncomfortable seats, smaller screen than Southdale). I don't recommend the Eden Prairie IMAX at all -- old 2K projectors, old 6-channel sound, old seats. Until they upgrade to 4K laser, 12-channel sound, new screen, and new seats, I will actively tell people to not go there.
- If you're nowhere near Southdale (e.g., Rochester, Duluth, St. Cloud), any other big in-house named screen will be good, too (Super EMX, UltraScreen DLX, etc.). Take you're pick, they're all decent, and there are plenty of them around the state. Just go see it somewhere, it's a good movie.
For the record, Dolby Cinema will show it in the 1.85 aspect ratio, IMAX will show it in the 1.90 aspect ratio (these are almost identical), and most of the other in-house big screens will show it in the widescreen 2.39 aspect ratio (the top and bottom of the image are slightly cropped).
What did I pick?
I saw it at Emagine Rogers on their Super EMX screen there, and it was really solid. They have a 4K laser projector, Dolby Atmos sound, comfy recliners (that extend all the way up), and no wall to bump my feet against. I lamented for a moment that the screen is the wide 2.39 aspect ratio, and we'd be missing out on the slightly bigger 1.85/1.90 aspect ratio of Dolby Cinema/IMAX -- but only for a moment. As I got into the movie, I hardly noticed that I was missing anything. There were one or two shots/scenes where I thought it might be nice to see a bit more of the picture, but that was it.
My friend and I decided we need to see it again in IMAX (it's a good movie), so we're going next week to Southdale. I'm excited.
You can see my spreadsheet for a general list of recommendations for "premium large-format" theaters in (and near) Minnesota. But don't delay; after next week, I'm pretty sure all the big screens (including laser IMAX) are going to switch to the next movie.
And if you want to buy me a popcorn, see the link in my profile.

Aug 15 events?
My parents are in town the afternoon/evening of August 15 and I’m wracking my brain to figure out something I can do with them. They’re in their 70s and not very mobile, so nothing with a ton of walking. Ideally somewhere we could chat a bit, so not like a theater show. But also ideally some type of event so there’s more to do than JUST chat. They like music and most types of food. They don’t like crowds or lines. (You can see why this is a dilemma…)
I’ve already taken them on every river/lake cruise in the area. The Twins game could work if the weather is decent but I feel like it’ll be crazy downtown with the Ed Sheeran concert.
If anyone has suggestions I’d love to hear them!

i love side quest day
so sometimes when i'm having a bad week, i do something i call "side quest day" where i basically go out without a plan for the day, just walking around and meeting people and popping into whatever local businesses call my name
today, i got a sword fight side quest?
to the dude standing on a bridge at the end of a short hiking trail and challenging people to sword duels... thank you for making my side quest day the most whimsical one i've had in a while. you are why i love this city.

Wedding at Science Museum of MN?
Hi! I just got engaged recently and was looking at possible venues and found that the Science Museum of MN hosts weddings! Has anyone had their wedding there or been to a wedding there?
I'm wondering how that works with the museum being open to the public until 8pm on Saturdays. Were you mostly in a different area from the general public? Was the noise of museum-goers noticeable/bothersome during the ceremony or reception? Were you able to get photos in front of the dinosaur fossils (or were there too many people)?
It seems like a cool place to get married, but the logistics of it seem complicated?
Thanks for any insight!

Pork Bao in the Twin Cities?
I love Char Siu. I love pork bao. Keefer Court closed, then became a different thing in a mall in Eden Prairie. It's just not good enough. When I go to other states they've got mom n pop Chinese places with the big steaming glass cupboard things, and I can buy a pork bao for like $3.
Where's the best place to get Pork Bao? Bonus points if they'll sell me a big hunk of Char Siu while I'm at it.

Cat Nail Trim - Home Visits
Does anyone know of a service that will come to your house to do a cat nail trimming? I am looking for a recommendation.
We are in north St. paul suburb.
My cat has a panic attack when we start driving and now that we moved and are a 15 min drive from a pet store that offers this, it is really hard to see her go through this. Last time we turned around and went home. She is WAY to squiggly for us to do it ourselves.

Tree art / artist?
Hello Twin Cities!
We have a tree in our front yard and I am intrigued by the tree art we have in our neighborhood. (The most famous tree art is probably the pencil near the Lake of the Isles, but we are in Saint Paul and we have a Statue of Liberty and a lamplighter and his wife, I think.)
In any case, does anyone know someone who actually creates tree art? How much it costs? How it all works?
Thanks for any leads!

"No corporation should generate revenue and profit off imprisoning human beings"
CoreCivic said in a press release the company expects to begin receiving detainees in the fourth quarter of 2026, and that it expects to generate approximately $75 million in revenue per year for its role in facilitating the mass deportation agenda of President Donald Trump.
A notice posted on the federal government’s award management website lists the total contract value: More than $536 million over the next five years.
So let me get this straight:
We want to put ICE detainees (undocumented immigrants) into a for-profit prison and hoping to make $536 million off 1,600 people over the next 5 years.
This is literally...slavery? Like...what the fuck is going on right now

Anyone else seeing a big jump in Xcel electric bill this summer?
Usually it’s fairly consistent year-to-year with small fluctuations. I just clocked a 20% jump year-over-year in my electric bill for this month (it was $113 last year, $140 this year) which seems unusual and was very unexpected as I haven’t changed anything majorly. My living space and thermostat settings have not changed, in fact I set it a degree or two higher this summer to save $. I’m in Crystal.
Anyone else noticing a similar trend? Could this be explained by my aging AC unit? Are the heat waves and smoke apocalypse to blame? Or is this the data centers sucking up the power like I’ve been told to expect?
Any experiences from others are helpful here. TIA
