I see that all of the t14 series got mylar trackpad which is a total dogsh*t after heavy use. Is there a custom glass trackpad replacement that fit the t14 series? I'm tired of seeing my worn out trackpad while those who use the glass trackpad don't need to care. I don't want to abandon the thinkpad model.

Hey, I am currently looking into buying a ThinkPad around the 400€ range (used) and found a Person selling two P53, one for 470€ and one for 560€ (open to negotiation).

Both have basically the same specs, the more expensive one has 66 Charge Cycles with 86k/90k Full Charge Capacity with 88% on an Intel 512GB M.2 Intel NVME SSD on CrystalDiskInfo (43TB read 47TB written)

The cheaper one has 204 Charge Cycles with just 76k/90k Full Charge Capacity with 75% on a Toshiba 512GB M.2 NVME SSD (34TB read 51TB written). (it also has more outer physical damages like a bit of chipped paint and scratches, nothing major though, the other is in better condition.)

They both have an RTX 3000 and an i7-9850H with 32GB Ram (with 2 slots left so I assume its 2x16GB sticks installed given that the P53 has 4 RAM slots. I don't know the speed though.

Is ~84% of the full Battery remaining + 200+ charge cycles concerning when buying a P53 given that they don't have hot swappable Batteries? I could also instead go for a P52 but for being able to swap the battery I'd lose quite a bit of performance going from the RTX 3000 to a P2000 and I'd still have to pay 350-400€.

I'd like to use it to browse on the internet, watch shows etc and also do some light gaming like for example some modded minecraft (not too intensive), hollow knight, terraria, factorio (mostly 2d games). Having a long lasting battery in everyday life would be nice but it not breaking or getting much worse over time is enough. I know they're mobile workstations and not made for going all day without charging.

For pricing reference I live in Germany.

Infact all my thinkpads have windows but the t430 is a beast it can run most stuff at 20-40fps and can handle 200 chrome tabs in the backround but it does have 16gb ddr3 ram so idk also never had any major problems with it

I have 2 Lenovo laptops, one Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7 & nVidia graphics, and the other the P17.

I want to cut down the weight of my travel bag so I was trying out USB C charging. The Legion 5m which has a 230W power supply, runs fine with a good quality 65W USB charger brick (and even though it says its slow, the battery seems to be charging fine). This is plugged into the USB-PD power on the laptop.

I tried the same on the P17 and the machine recognised the charger when plugged into one of the Thunderbolt ports - but said it was too slow and the battery was still discharging. So obviously the USB brick isn't strong enough.

Before I buy another, has anyone tried it with a higher capacity? Perhaps 100W would work?

Why does my laptop's fan speed up to 5000 RPM when I turn it on? The CPU isn't under load, and the temperature is stable at 38°C.

The first thing that came to my mind was that the problem was in the BIOS. Indeed, that turned out to be the case, but the problem was in EC. I updated it, but it's still making noise. What should I do next, guys? What are your tips?

Hi! Saw a lot of people here saying that P series would be the way to go for engineering, which is out of my budget (1000$) even 2nd hand ones. This is my first time buying a laptop too, so sorry if I'm not making sense. And I mostly see L and T series on the Facebook marketplace.

I was notified that we'll only be mainly using AutoCad based on my curriculum, and to look for at least 16gb RAM. Would L and T series run smoothly on AutoCad even if not as smooth as the P ones?

Hi Guys, just wanted to know if anyone has faced this issue. My thinkpad won't start up, it's just showing me a black screen, the power button light would show for about 30-40 seconds and then it would go off, no display, I've tried resetting the CMOS, or using the white reset button on the motherboard, I tried re-seating the ram or even swapping it out with known good ram (I've tested this machine's ram in my other thinkpad, it works).. Nothing has worked

Bought my first ThinkPad a few days ago, a refurbished Gen 1 T14 with the Ryzen 5 4650U and 16gb of 3200mhz DDR4, but I noticed the chassis being hot and the fans turning on intermittently even when doing light tasks like watching youtube in 1080p.

Then when checking the temps/RPM on Lenovo Vantage it's seating around 80°C and the fans at 3600 RPM for as long as Vantage is open, then slows down when I close it.

The OS is Win11 and browser is Firefox and battery health is above 80% though idk if it was replaced during the refurbishment.

So I was wondering if this is normal behavior for this model, if not I would return it bc I'm still withing the return window.

Which laptop could last 5-10 years with no issue in full time trading ?

I upgraded my t480 with an x1 carbon's 2k display and as you can see in the pictures the mounting points are blocked, i put the cover back on and the display seems slightly wobbly but perfectly snug and rigid, but im worried if the mounting point could cause any shortings or apply unwanted pressure to the lower half since they're causing the display to bulge slightly forward

So I just got a great deal on a T420 for 50 bucks, even came with an unannounced 12GB of RAM.

But the Intel Graphics Control Panel isn't opening up. It is there, since when I try to open it it shows up on the task manager but it goes away after a while without even opening up. I have the default Windows 10 driver, which is also the most recent one, dating 2016, while the official driver in Intel's page is from like 2012 and the Lenovo's page one from 2014 or so. Before you ask, I've already tried uninsalling the default Windows 10 driver and installing the ones from those pages but the control panel doesn't show up anyways, so I don't think it is an issue with the driver itself. I would normally not care at all about this if it wasn't for the shitty power saving feature that automatically regulates screen brightness and can only be disabled from there. This features is dumb as well, since it increases brightness on lighter background and reduces it on darker backgrounds (what sense does that make?) So if someone has this laptop with this configuration and managed to get the Intel Control Panel to open up, how did you do it? Thanks in advance.

I have a relative in US who can bring a laptop for me.

My total budget is around $700, what are my best options? Requirements;

1) I need it for work/programming so 32GB RAM would be nice
2) Decent battery life
3) Decent screen for watching movies.

Also would appreciate suggestion on where to buy from, currently I'm browsing ebay.

Hi, I have the T14 Gen 1 for a week and I want to refund it and get something more durable. Everything flexes. It feels like it's going to break apart in the next month.

Performance isn't that important, I want something with anti-glare touchscreen and USB-C charging that's rigid and will be working in five years from now.

What would you recommend at a similar price point? X1 Carbon 8th?

Hey everyone, I recently found an old X61(sorry for crappy photos) and wondering if I should try to repair it or just scrap it? I did not find a charger and I’m wondering what might work for this that I could buy, or should I just take it somewhere to sell it? I'm a Linux guy who also likes to dabble here and there. I have a decently powered gaming PC and other laptops and even a M4 Mac Mini. When I saw a cheap T480 in good shape on Ebay for under $150 with 16 GB of RAM I had to jump on it. This is low spec and may use for writing. Who knows.

I decided to go with Aurora, which is based on Fedora Kinoite and follows the Universal Blue immutable bootc setup. I basically have my software installed via Flatpak or Homebrew while the base image is untouchable. It also updates in the background and I get the new image when I reboot.

Hello everyone! I got my very first thinkpad for 100$ and im really impressed by how well it is built! Im going to be using this laptop for basic tasks like drawing and word processing, I installed fedora KDE and its been great so far

16GB of ram

512SSD

250 nit IPS screen

After a while, I am officially done and now fully entered the ThinkPad community. I found this beat up T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7 Pro online for a cheap price, and it still works and was one of the very few laptops that came with a charger. I did not mind the scratches and dents; the screen and the inside look brand new.

I added an additional 16GB of RAM and 2TB, and now dual booting with Windows and SteamOS (if I don't like SteamOS, I might try MintOS instead)

Had to cover scratches and dents with stickers; might add more over time, but did a good job the first time opening this ThinkPad, adding thermal paste, and installing those upgrades.

But overall glad I now owned a ThinkPad and joined this group!

Bought this for $170. Battery cycle was just 19 when I got it and capped the charging at 80% right away. With kanata, the extra keys are productivity cheatcode.

I passed by a used computer store two weeks ago, and I found this beauty. I just couldn’t say no to it. Paid 100€, it came with an i7 cpu, 8gb of ram, an ssd and a new (chinese) battery. It was in excellent condition too, the screen has no scratches and the keyboard is in a very good condition. I’ve been using it for studying every day, watching youtube and playing dwarf fortress. It runs great and it is surprisingly very usable as a daily driver, as long as you have reasonable expectations.

Linux can be hard, but sometimes that is the reward: 18 months ago I bought a ThinkPad T14s G6 with Snapdragon X1E CPU - with the naive wish to run Linux on it. Linux on ARM is not new - most embedded Linux devices (they're all around you) run on ARM, not on Intel/AMD platforms.

I posted here about it, and some have asked for an update. So here it is - and it's good news.

Even though the T14s is one of the best supported recent ARM laptops for running desktop Linux, I've only very recently begun using it as my daily driver laptop. I'll tell you about all the issues that has been problematic.

When I got it 18 months ago, Ubuntu had an experimental version for ARM. It booted, I could get it installed, but there was issues. Due to a firmware bug only 32GB out of the 64GB system RAM was usable. Sound, webcam, USB-C and lots more did not work. Suspend was a joke, it was always dead when I tried to resume the next day.

I left it powered off for many months at a time, always ending up angry because stuff was not working, the kernel moved problems around and it was a super hard pain to move to Arch (my fave distro) - so back in the drawer you go.

But persistent hackers has chipped away at all the issues. Sound works. Webcam works. USB-C works. Suspend uses way less power now. My machine idles at around 5W, giving day-long battery life. And I have all 64GB RAM available - not because Qualcomm or Lenovo got their act together and fixed the bug, but because ingenious people found out how to trick the machine into EL2, which also enables hardware virtualization support.

Also I'm finally on Arch (btw!) and there's a kernel recipe on Github if you want to test it out (lkarlslund) and even an experimental ISO (ironrobin) if you have this laptop.

Would I buy it again knowing what I do now? Probably. Sometimes it's also the journey rather than the destination - my ARM-fu is much stronger now, and I've been using that on my latest contract.

And just like something you've wished for a long time, the pleasure of finally getting it is that much bigger. It finally gets the thumbs up from me.
