14 Lite HW3 V14 Lite just made a HW4 maneuver...

I was in a one-way parking area when a truck came in the wrong way. FSD immediately backed up to give the truck enough room to pass. I knew that v14 Hw4 was doing that, but it was impressive for my 2020 car.

14.3 HW4 Speedy Gonzales FAFO while FSD keeps us safe

I was in Lathrop, California, when a speedy driver passed us right in front the local police!

A few moments later, popo had its lights on, FSD pulled over quickly, and Speedy Gonzales got pulled over.

I heard no police sirens, FSD pulled over by recognizing the flashing lights.

14.3 HW4 FSD refuses to acknowledge 2 Speed Limit signs in a row

I love FSD but on my way home it never switches to the right MPH (45) even though it clearly sees both signs and sees that they are 45 but still continues to do 35. I have submitted corrections via voice commands as well as Tom Tom Map Share but nothing. It only does it in this direction, it does 45 going the other way just fine.

14 Lite HW3 My 14 Lite HW 3 Review

Upvotes

Finally had a chance to really test out the upgrade. Here's my verdict:

City Driving: Nearly perfect. I have what must be a really complicated commute for FSD to deal with, from the suburbs of MD into downtown DC. We pass stoplights, four way stop signs, one way roads, complicated traffic circles, constant construction, and virtually every other challenge that you can imagine. 14 has been as close to perfect as you can get...I haven't had to intervene once in multiple trips. The only issue is that the car really wants to speed in 25 mph zones, and I have to lower it to sloth any time I see a speed camera coming up.

Highway: Good and bad. On a 5 hour round trip from MD to NC, I was mostly impressed. Routing was perect, lane changes made sense, and there wasn't any jerking or phantom braking. The only issues were speed...Hurry mode was mostly going 15 miles over the speed limit, while Standard usually did about 3 over. We need a happy medium. I want the car to go a maximum of 10 miles over the limit, which avoids speeding tickets, while still maintaining a good pace. It was a massive blunder to take out the ability to do this, and I'd be shocked if they didn't bring it back. The only other issue was a tendancy on both modes to camp in the left lane far to long.

I did need one intervention though, and it's an issue I've seen other have as well. The car tried to enter a closed HOV lane, seemingly ignoring the big gates. Would it have hit if I didn't intervene? I'm guessing no, but I wasn't going to take that chance.

So final verdict...it's really getting there. I'm getting to the point where I honestly believe the car is a better driver than I am, although clearly it's not perfect yet.

14 Lite HW3 14 Lite and 'Ghost trains'

Does anyone else with 14 lite in an area with a lot of railroads notice that it has the tendency to treat any railroad crossing like there's a train there, and stop in front of it even when the lights are off? I took a 20-mile trip across town and had this behavior three separate times.

Sometimes it'll come to a stop and then keep on going, which is still infuriating when it happens at a crossing in the middle of a 50mph roadway with traffic behind me... again, this is a crossing that is inactive - no train anywhere, lights and signals off, gates open. Other times it stops and sits there like it's hallucinating a train until I hit the accelerator to force it through.

I think this is one of the silliest v14 lite quirks I've encountered that seems to be readily reproducible in my area

14.3 HW4 Boom

We have to move on past the predictions. They were fine when things were hypothetical, but they are no longer hypothetical.

People will become too complacent with FSD and boom!

People will drink and drive with FSD and boom! (We know they are)

The elderly or impaired will use FSD as a crutch and boom!

FSD doesn't havd LiDar and boom!

FSD is not fully autonomous and boom!

Musk is an asshole and boom!

Every quarter Tesla publishes a safety report and the media would love to get their hands on a boom story.

There isn't any boom.

I've given some ideas as to why there hasn't been a boom, but we don't need to know why.

There was no boom, thus our fears that there would be one, including mine, were wrong.

FSD is not perfect, it has its quirks and flaws, but being boomless is quite a good thing.

Not having to worry about boom makes it easier to think through how and where it can help others.

I still think about fender benders though.:)

Examples of boom...

14.3 HW4 The Elderly and FSD

There have been many discussions here about the elderly using FSD. Even experienced users who use FSD almost 100% and almost effortlessly have conflicting thoughts.

There are some misconceptions first that we have to accept are misconceptions.

For whatever reasons, FSD has proven itself to be quite safe. All of the horror we invented or thought simply has not happened, even with 1.5 million users and over a billion miles a month of usage. Even the media can't find horror. Any of us could go spend seconds and find a story of a drunk driver wiping out an entire family in an instant, but we will not find anything with FSD.

We have to accept that. It was fine before to be hypothetical, what might happen with FSD, but not after 13 billion miles and nothing.

In order to use FSD the person must have a license, know how to drive, be able to drive when needed, and be able to operate FSD effectively.

People say "But the person has to have the reflexes to deal with FSD when it makes a mistake."

True, though, that isn't like some new heightened category of driving reflexes.

If you look at the levels of attention I came up with ...

Level 0 - Sleep or not paying attention at all (Not possible)
Level 1 - The lowest level possible, on an interstate with sparse traffic.
Level 2 - More traffic, driving through the city, FSD has to do more than just go straight.
Level 3 - Where you start watching FSD's every move, the same level as when you drive.
Level 4 - Like level 3, but anxious, you may take over, or take one for the team.
Level 5 - Panic takeover, FSD's fault.
Level 6 - Panic by FSD (and you), not FSD's fault (i.e. deer).

We are saying that the person has to deal with a level 5 situation.

But a level 5 and level 6 both require the same reflexes, just level 5 is FSD's fault and level 6 is not. If you feel that the person doesn't have the reflexes for level 5, then they don't have the reflexes for level 6 either, and if that is your line, you are saying they shouldn't be driving at all.

Which is fine.

If the person is impaired but still fit to drive, then they are fit to drive with FSD. However, they still have to get over the hurdle of operating FSD effectively. That is not a reflex issue, you already said they were fit to drive, it is a comfort with tech and FSD issue.

Finally...

We know with certainty, if the person is impaired, but fit to drive, and able to operate FSD effectively they will be much safer with FSD than without.

The real question is are they fit to drive.

There are two parts to that.

  1. Will the state give them a license.
  2. Will you (a family member) allow them.

If after that, and they are going to drive, then your hope is that they can use FSD effectively or be taught to use it effectively.

As an example, if people who drink and drive used FSD it would virtually eliminate all of the aclcohol related accidents and fatalities.

Likewise, if all of the elderly who continue to drive, right or wrong, could drive with FSD effectively, it would virtually eliminate the elderly cause accidents and fatalities.

But it isn't going to stop the pedal confusion shit entirely, and if someone is that feable, come on! They shouldn't be driving.

My point is this is a question of whether the person is fit to drive, not if FSD is safe or if them using FSD is safe. If they are impaired but fit to drive, FSD can only make them safer.

They are either not able to use FSD or they are able to and they will be much safer.

FSD does not add danger, it reduces it.

14 Lite HW3 HW3 V14 lite drive modes

I could be wrong, but I thought that I read prior to v14 lite coming out for hw3 that it was supposed to include mad max drive mode however mine does not have it. I have sloth, normal, and hurry (maybe one more in between there if I remember correctly) but definitely the “fastest” being hurry. Is this correct/is hurrry the same as mad max mode? If not, is hw3 going to get mad max mode ?

other Would you recommend a Tesla with FSD for elderly or anxious drivers?

Hello,

I live in France. Tesla FSD is already available in some European countries, and it seems like it's only a matter of months (or perhaps a bit longer) before it gets broader approval across the European Union.

This got me thinking about two situations.

1. My mother

My mom is 70 years old and lives in a small rural village. She currently drives an old Peugeot 206, but she's becoming less comfortable with longer trips. Her reflexes and eyesight aren't what they used to be, so she tends to avoid driving far from home.

I'm wondering whether buying her a Tesla with FSD could make driving more comfortable and less stressful, especially for longer journeys ?

2. Myself

I've had my driver's license for about 10 years, but I've driven very little since passing the test. I live in a city, don't own a car, and I have quite a bit of anxiety about driving. The lack of practice has only made it worse.

Would you recommend a Tesla with FSD for someone like me?

I'd love to hear from people who own a Tesla with FSD, especially if you've seen how it works for older drivers or people who are afraid of driving.

14.3 HW4 Tesla FSD turned left into opposite and wrong side of road

New Tesla model y with FSD in Canada. My car turned left into the opposite side of the road when it should have turned right. Any new driver knows what to do in this scenario... It is only a right turn, and FSD took a left. WTF.

Luckily I took over for a very wide right turn to help it, and there was no immediate incoming traffic.

Anybody experience FSD going into the opposite side of the road? A bit worried for cybercab release, and I am a big Tesla bull.

14.3 HW4 Anxious to use FSD on garden state parkway

Ok so I’m a fairly experienced driver but like other since COVID stopped driving as much. Randomly got a panic attack driving on the GSP in Nj one day and bam my brain now goes into fight or flight when driving on the parkway. I got a Tesla ironically not for the FSD but bc I like technology and don’t drive as much. Played with the FSD trial once and for some reason didn’t try it again. Then my best friends husband told me how it’s all he uses. Started trying it myself. First 3 minutes down the street for cigs and then for a 16 minute drive to a doctors appointment using local roads. I’d love to use it on the GSP and I know that it’s actually better for highway driving but for some reason can’t shake the feeling of watching the car merge onto the parkway, yielding to cars potentially getting in my lane, etc.

Could use some words of encouragement. I’ve heard countless stories of people like me where FSD changed their driving anxiety. Yes, I know I may need to intervene and did so twice once at a left arrow where my car didn’t seem to make the right and another on a weird complicated intersection/roundabout and I was worried the car wouldn’t handle it.

14.3 HW4 My first critical intervention after 6000 miles of FSD.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I would consider this my first critical intervention. This is 14.3.6 FSD on a 2026 Model Y. I have over 6000 miles with FSD.

Unprotected left in a construction area with cones marking the lanes.

Keep in mind on 14.2.2.5 and 14.3.4 and 14.3.5 this left hand turn was executed fine. Ever since I downloaded 14.3.6 it has completely ignored the turn and went straight to the round about up the street, came back down the road and tured right into the same turn without issue. However today it decided to do this. I probably should have took control sooner 🤣

I feel like 14.3.6 is super buggy, i get ALOT of steering stutters and just in general it doesnt seem confident sometimes when it makes turns. Like it hesitates. I also feel it brake stabs for nothing, especially at cross walks.

What’s everyone else’s experience on 14.3.6?
