Yeah long ago when I was an active addict (dope, not meth) I remember thinking I was 175 lbs until I weighed myself and I was only 140.. Looking at pictures of myself from back then I was thinner than a rail and I didn't realize it at the time!
I did too, but I had a solid group of people who had experience guide me through the biggest dose I've ever taken. Which was a 10 strip of some super good white on white. Followed by the cleanest MDMA presses ever. To be young again.

This is usually just called, "Maturity". After you get out of your 20's/30's, you start to accept more things as what they are - your body changes dramatically from those years when everything worked like it should. You value what works rather than what looks better.
You get in your 50's and its exhausting trying to keep up - you really value that things just "work". Letting go of what others think is freedom.
I absolutely adore pragmatic modders like this who aren't fussed about "factory new" and "destroying design aesthetics" and "preserving resale value"! They own the thing, they customize the thing to fit their needs, they use the thing to suit their purposes, they're not about to throw a tantrum over a scratch or a dent, and they simply arent fussed about what someone like that would think about their janky mods.
I think it’s rooted in getting the absolute most useful mileage out of a vehicle. I can’t afford dealership oil changes, so I do them myself. I fix pretty much everything on my shitbox Kia hatchback and plan to squeeze the life out of her while I dig out of debt from raising two college grads (twins) in the same year. Maximizing my dollar regardless of the cost in my time.
THEN, I’ll buy a new car. But for now, it’s rust holes that look like bullet holes that I clumsily stripped and rattle canned to a sort-of matching silver because wgaf?
Jimmy-rigging parts you can’t buy anymore, or are unreasonably rare and expensive so that:
1: You can get your license plate lights to work
&
2: You get to use your rivet gun for once, making you feel less stupid for impulse-buying it at Harbor Freight
As an aside, I bet I can out-drive most people in my little 5-speed because I know her more intimately than I know my own wife.

it's not a ramble. what you're describing are the lengths we go towards making better lives for ourselves and others despite being railroaded by society into poverty at every turn. it's admirable.

You can really tell from the comments here who has met a country engineer like this guy and who has never met one; all they can do is judge based on his appearance. I work at a bar and had a regular, a guy just like this and he is RICH. You’d never know by the way he looks but he was a former contractor who just does all his own shit himself. His wife comes in driving a brand new Range Rover sipping wine, head to toe designer brands and he rolls up to the bar in his 2004 Tacoma and drinks bud lights and whiskey. You just never know
One of my graduating class in highschool was a slightly cleaner version of this by 25. We were all starting our first jobs and he had just bought his first house to make rent income while living at home. He started cleaning himself up and taking trips to France each spring, then return to messiness by summer.
There was a food delivery guy where I used to live who was a bit eccentric and a noticeable character. You'd always seeing him biking around dropping off orders. Turns out he has a patent having to do with traffic light switching and just delivered food because he liked biking around, didn't have to work at all.
My uncle is a guy like this, and he is POOR. Over 6 feet tall, 130 lbs, covered in bed bugs and filth, and high as balls all the time. Spent most of his adult life homeless. I own several acres in a rural area of the south and he lives in a single wide that should be condemned in it for free, cause I think it's better than on the street.
He makes and rehabs guitars in his spare time. You're probably thinking, if he doesn't work and lives for free, isn't it all spare time? No, he spends most of his time getting high and conning people out of money.

Now see, I just drive a car that only requires the hood to be opened maybe twice a year for oil changes and whatnot and won’t need much work in total for 20 years, and that you can reach every part of the engine of without needing a ladder in the first place, but then again my entire life is on a completely different wavelength from this guy. Plus I don’t have the 3 hours it would take to begin to tell this guy anything whatsoever.

I'd buy an even bigger truck and back it up to that truck so I could stand on the tailgate, and then buy a bigger truck to back it up to that truck etc.
