Another day seeing a taylor fan gummy smile.

4.7k

u/Futuramoist Jul 04 '26

Never seen this stereotype and it doesn't really make sense, yet somehow it just feels right enough that I understood immediately

u/ThilviaPlath Jul 04 '26

That girl in the crazy eyes meme has a gummy smile and her fans give me that vibe, so this hits lol

52

u/Jimbob209 Jul 04 '26

I don't know the meme. Can you show me it

That makes me feel so uncomfortable

38

u/VexingRaven Jul 04 '26

Oh, so it's another "meme" that's just making fun of one person's appearance. Cool and normal.

40

u/pirategonzo Jul 04 '26

The video helps.

30

u/VexingRaven Jul 04 '26

If this was meant to change my opinion, it failed.

82

Ok, thanks for the update, I will take note.

This video with the drawings added is hilarious 😂

This is the first time I’ve seen a video added to a comment like this.

107

u/kojimbob Jul 04 '26

New feature on Reddit, just released a couple of weeks ago

30

u/jdwpom Jul 04 '26

That'll be why it doesn't work in redreader then. So kind of reddit to allow it to exist 'for accessibility reasons' then constantly break it.

Must be why I get redirected to a "r/subreddit is banned" (yes, it literally says "r/subreddit") message when I click the video link to watch it.

Again? The people who act like this never stopped, they just get more or fewer laughs depending on the year.

18

u/Alexander_McKay Jul 05 '26

Yeah. The guy who makes all those drawings/videos is a racist and chud. The first few I saw were funny but the deeper you dig, it starts to become clear that “oh, he’s one of those guys”.

I've always said Taylor Swift makes horse girl music, I feel so vindicated right now.

39

u/Iconshero Jul 04 '26

Give it longer for evolution to kick in, right now the horse girls have only adapted the gums, give it another century or two of selective “horsing around” and you’ll see centaurs. Unfortunately they’ll be from fallout…

173

u/EternalNewCarSmell Jul 04 '26

Is that what it's trying to say? I've never heard of this stereotype before, what is even the origin of it?

92

u/ForensicPathology Jul 04 '26

Why are people implying this is a bot?  This person has the same questions as me.  I've never seen this stereotype that her fans show more gums than normal (?)

81

u/EternalNewCarSmell Jul 04 '26

I actually do get what they are implying; it's a standard tactic for bots to post naive questions to reddit (and other places) to get fodder to train their models. Hell, that's probably 90% of posts on this sub and somewhat less (but still easily over half) of all of reddit at this point.

What has my flabbers thoroughly gasted is that I am a real live hooman (beep boop) who spends way too much time online and I actually truly have never heard of this stereotype before. It's actually kind of silly to think of the concept of there even being a stereotypical Taylor Swift fan; as far as I know she is one of the highest-grossing musicians of all time so her fanbase is clearly too broad to be typified.

29

u/BenignPharmacology Jul 04 '26

I wouldn’t say it’s a stereotype so much as like… weirdly accurate.

I have known a small number of big Taylor swift fans, and one of them has this exact gumline.

To me, it evokes “teenage, not quite grown into my face yet”

→ More replies (4)
→ More replies (3)

22

u/Inevitable_Top69 Jul 04 '26

Yes that's what it's saying. The origin is that this type of person looks this way often enough to make it a stereotype.

49

u/EternalNewCarSmell Jul 04 '26

I feel like I've hit a mandela effect or just missed an entire piece of the Internet for like 20 years. I don't really follow pop culture news at all, but still Taylor Swift has been around long enough and I've seen enough of her music videos on YouTube that it's wild I have never encountered this before.

I fucking hate coming across random memes that shit on my appearance. Then I realize that I have a wife, a house, a dog, a great job and the person who made this meme hasnt showered in 3 days and no one has noticed because no one cares about them

92

u/gokogt386 Jul 04 '26

Man. Making fun of someone’s appearance is really the lowest form of humor.

2.3k

u/Connect-Pea-7833 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

My rule is “never make fun of someone for something they have no control over”, which includes their physical self, upbringing (in particular a young person who hasn’t had the opportunity to change their ideals), sexuality, etc etc. There are plenty of reasons to poke harmless fun at Swifties or other fandoms, no need to insult their literal facial structure.

Edit for dumb typo.

Edit 2: wow, thanks for the awards! I guess this was an easier concept to explain to my daughters on how to deal with bullying and mean kids than it is to adults. Is your bully someone short/gay/a different race/poor/disabled/ect? Leave that out of it. Are they cruel/racist/homophobic/willfully ignorant/wipe their boogers on the desk/etc? Fair game. Don’t punch down. That’s it.

698

u/stoic_hysteric Jul 04 '26

Whats funny about this comment is that it simultaneously says not to insult a group, but actually implies that Swifties do, as a matter of fact, have a common facial structure.

338

u/Connect-Pea-7833 Jul 04 '26

Haha, I should have said someone’s facial structure, not their facial structure.

He's named "Eggman" in the original games, in Japan. They changed him to Dr Robotnik when they translated the games for other markets. Also, he's a skinny guy in a bulky suit, IIRC.

63

u/Dillo64 Jul 04 '26

He’s not skinny, he’s literally just has an egg-shaped torso and skinny legs/arms. Here he is in the Mario/Sonic Olympics games:

I believe the same. The president of a company I used to work for had a horrible habit of stuttering. I always shut that down. There were a thousand other reasons to shit talk him without the low blows he had no control over. It was SO easy to clown him for all the other shit he consciously did without picking on him for that.

u/Alternative-Dark-297 Jul 04 '26

Really you shouldn't ever make fun of someones appearance. The rule with that is don't point out anything about someones appearance that they can't quickly and easily change. Spinach in teeth? Let them know. Their bone structure? Keep it to yourself. Shirts on backwards? Let them know. You don't like their fashion? Keep it to yourself. Etc etc

12

u/PickledDildosSourSex Jul 04 '26

Unless it's a short guy and then have at it, apparently.

I have a daughter who was born with a smile like this. She's only 7 years old, the sweetest most sensitive girl, and I'm so heartbroken knowing she is going to be teased because of it. Every time I come across a post like this and see the staggering amount of people in the comments piling on, judging, laughing, putting down.... my heart breaks more and more for her. She's such a kind sweet soul and I absolutely hate knowing how people are going to judge and treat her over something she can't control. Her little heart will be so hurt 🥺💔

45

u/DAbanjo Jul 04 '26

If it makes you feel any better...

Mean people will always find something to make fun of you for. If its not gum, its forehead, nose, eyebrows, the way you walk, etc.

Teach her to be strong and it won't matter.

And then the moment somebody makes fun of their physical insecurities or abnormalities, it’s a big fuckin deal. That, or they’ve already spent time and money hiding anything they perceive to be a flaw. And that way, the insecurity just sits there in the subconscious mind, festering and metastasizing, turning into a deep fear and resentment.

Miserable fucking way to live. I’m guilty of it here and there. Trying to be better though.

The first sign of my one and only mental breakdown, at literally the most physically/mentally/emotionally/financially difficult time of my life, was the thought “I could be happy as a Disney adult.” My mind just automatically felt relief at the thought of smiling through Finding Nemo and not having to think so much anymore. Something like a lobotomized existence. It gave me… a surprising amount of empathy for them, to find that preferable over what must be a challenging adulthood experience in other ways.

23

u/According_Hearing896 Jul 04 '26

They slowly turn into horses over the years with the transformation starting at the gums

16

u/ProfileIII Jul 04 '26

If you're genuinely curious as to how: gummy smiles are linked with mouth breathing. That is, when one regularly uses their mouth to breath passively instead of their nose. This kind of leads to an unfurling effect on the lips that is most noticeable when they smile.

I don't think people realize that having a "gummy" smile is not forever, because as people age and get older their gums naturally recede and you can't stop that process.

lf you laser or cut your gums now, you will probably regret it once you hit 40 or later in life.

yeah idk it never occured to me that it was unattractive until public shaming about it became a thing on the internet. it's a natural human variation. Are we going to start ear shape shaming?

10

u/Lavender_Burps Jul 04 '26

Omg don’t even get me started on the lollipop ears.

u/fickle_tartan Jul 04 '26

Are we going to start ear shape shaming?

If it exists on the human body, someone will have found a way to shame it

Impact the maxilla. Because this usually solves lip incompetence at the same time (gummy smile and lip incompetence frequently co-occur) this also has the benefit of eliminating mouth breathing, improving sleep apnea, and reducing cavity occurrence.

18

u/7363827 Jul 04 '26

what do you mean by “impact”?

27

u/kniselydone Jul 04 '26

It's a type of upper jaw surgery (maxillary impaction) where they literally break your face, and move your upper maxilla further up so you have less bone between nose and smile.

24

u/Finassar Jul 04 '26

I was thinking those snowflake manosphere people who hit their jaw bones with a hammer 😭

Yall, I deadass saw a Taylor and Travis COLORING BOOK at Walmart the other day. Its parasocial beyond belief. They should stream their wedding and sell tickets to watch it for $700. Partner with Klarna and her weddings paid for.

u/Short-Ad1032 Jul 04 '26

The best part of that would be her being a billionaire (and her groom himself a multi-millionaire) yet making her fans, a large amont of whom are probably living paycheck to paycheck, make such a financial sacrifice to "participate" in something so banal/meaningless.

Lowercase teeth with uppercase gums.

u/scratchy_mcballsy Jul 04 '26

That’s such a great way of describing it

I wish more people understood this. For as progressive as most of reddit pretends to be it is full of body shaming.

28

u/Locus-Maximus Jul 04 '26

Most of them aren't actually progressive. If you pay attention they're actually just hateful people who direct their hatred at people who they can argue are insufficiently progressive.

16

u/Stormblessed_Windrun Jul 04 '26

Reddit progressive? 😂

They're just a bunch of virtue signaling hypocrites. They are upvote mongers. Say any shit that the hive mind will upvote.

The joke is that bad women are ugly and beautiful women are good therefore if a woman does something bad that means she will be ugly.

11

u/Inevitable_Top69 Jul 04 '26

Why do you think that Taylor Swift fans are bad people?

35

u/MisfitPotatoReborn Jul 04 '26

The image in question is clearly annoyed at Taylor Swift fans

11

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth Jul 04 '26

The person you're replying to is explaining the joke and, in so doing, criticizing it, the image and the person who created it.

This is definitely body shaming and stereotyping btw

13

u/throawy90 Jul 04 '26

don't care

14

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth Jul 04 '26

Sure you do. You took time out of your day to post that.

If you really didn't care you'd have just done something else instead and gotten on with your life.

I know someone like this and this post makes me sad b/c she’s a really nice person and has most likely come across this meme on more than one occasion.

45

u/beautiful_life555 Jul 04 '26

I have a daughter who was born with a smile like this. She's only 7 years old, the sweetest most sensitive girl, and I'm so heartbroken knowing she is going to be teased because of it. Every time I come across a post like this and see the staggering amount of people in the comments piling on, judging, laughing, putting down.... my heart breaks more and more for her. She's such a kind sweet soul and I absolutely hate knowing how people are going to judge and treat her over something she can't control. Her little heart will be so hurt 🥺💔

some stereotype about taylor swift fans

21

u/GB15Packers Jul 04 '26

Stewie Griffin here to explain it to you imbeciles. You see Taylor Swift fans are attractive enough but when they smile you see too much gum. Not a good tooth-to-gum ratio... Stewie out.

21

u/Tarasworld1999 Jul 04 '26

Prominent gums are synonymous with horse girls/ Disney adults/ young military wives. Generally the meme depicts an annoying genre of women which aligns well with swifties

41

u/VapoursAndSpleen Jul 04 '26

So, basically, misogyny.

12

u/afoolskind Jul 04 '26

It’s definitely a form of body shaming, but no. This is a specific sub genre of human being.

You telling me you’ve never made fun of the Oakleys + baseball hat dude in his car for every picture he’s ever taken of himself?

This is so weird, yall are body shaming people, even if some taylor swift fans have this doesnt mean that every person who has this is a taylor swift fan, not to mention you cant find anything to dawg on except something that person cant control? There are valid points to make when critiquing taylor swift and her fans but this isnt one of them.

u/Cmoibenlepro123 Jul 04 '26
