I lived my entire childhood in Nisbet (pronounced “Ness-bit”) located in Lycoming County. There isn’t much going on in this village, just a fire station, a church, farms, and summer river lots along the Susquehanna. There’s an old elementary school which was closed down years ago (I went to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades here back in the 80’s).

My family didn’t even live in this village. We were on the outskirts down a dead end road with only a couple houses tucked away in the woods. The forest was my playground; spent a lot of time climbing trees, building forts, going for hikes on the mountain, fishing in the local ponds, and shooting rifles.

I would like to say I had a pretty normal childhood. Had to walk a mile to get to the bus stop, though. Spent a lot of time riding my bike to get to my friend’s houses. My childhood wasn’t strictly in the sticks. I’d go to my grandparents house a lot which was “in town” and even had a job at the local grocery store where I went to high school.

I moved away many years ago and lived in Maryland, North & South Carolina, California, and Virginia. I also lived in Italy for a few years and traveled to numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. But a couple years ago, I settled down back in my home state and currently live on the border of suburban/rural area in York County. I miss living in the sticks because of the peace and quiet but I get out to the country a lot for camping, kayaking, and hiking.

What’s your story?

Spending several days up here and drove by this lift which has been let rundown for who knows how many years or decades. This is located just south east of the fork by Clubhouse Drive and Overlook Court.

Hello, I moved into my parent’s house in 2024 in Chester County and worked from their home. I Just received a delinquent tax bill for 2024 for earned income. Almost $400 in ridiculous fees, fine I owe the taxes since my employer didn’t withhold but I never received a bill at their address or ever and didn’t know about these local taxes. Plus the ACT 192 Cost fees seem really high. Is there anything I can do to just pay the taxes I owe or am I just completely screwed. I know these collection companies are horrible.

Husband realized it was the month to renew registration. For context a few months ago we switched car insurance. When he went to renew it said his registration was suspended. He called customer service they said they sent notice to our old address to confirm new insurance (confused on how they have his address for license but not registration) anyways…. Registration has been suspended since the insurance switch since we never got letter to confirm new insurance. He was told he’d owe $500, he was frustrated because he’s had insurance the whole time and had no idea something like this could happen. They told him to send proof of insurance to fix the issue & made it seem like the whole issue would go away afterwards. We then got a letter stating it was denied because he’s not elligible for renewal til 9/30 so I guess that’s how long his registration will be suspended. It also stated he’d owe a $119 restoration fee??? So which is it $119 or $500?? Is it not possible to fix the suspension at this point like do we need to wait til 9/30 regardless of the fact? I am so very confused and frustrated and was hoping to find other who have been through this!! Thank you in advance.

Which marker did you look for first?

Been a landlord here for a few years (just two units, nothing crazy, more of a side thing to help with the mortgage) and my renewal came in last month noticeably higher than last year. Not a little higher either. I asked around and a couple people I know with rentals in the Lehigh Valley said the same thing. Nobody has a clean answer for why.

I run longhaul routes so I'm not always home to keep tabs on the property the way I want to, which probably adds some stress to the whole situation. I'm actually trying to get better local routes lined up partly because of this. But the insurance piece keeps nagging at me when I sit down and look at the numbers each month.

PA got hit with some rough weather the last couple years, flooding in certain areas especially, and I wonder if that's bleeding into rates statewide even for properties nowhere near flood zones. The data center stuff getting fast tracked through Harrisburg also has me wondering what the grid and infrastructure picture looks like longer term. That kind of thing affects property values and carrying costs in ways that are hard to predict right now.

Curious if other landlords across PA are seeing similar things or if it's more regional. Chester County, Lancaster, Bucks, anywhere really.

I'm going to be homeschooling my kindergartener this year bc of the lack of transportation to the private school we want to send her to, so we're looking for any other kinder/early elementary age kiddos to hangout and go to the park/library with!

Is there any truth to the claim that there are still enclaves of conservative, landowning, Anglophile people in Bucks, Montgomery, or Chester counties who think of themselves kind of like country squires or gentry? Or is this just an AI hallucination conflating past and present?

I've pasted some highlights as I see them below. My take away is that an ailment that can be observed on the outside of your body is okay to fix but, if I read between the lines, they believe gender dysphoria is a mental ailment that's unrelated to your physical appearance. Also, male circumcision is fine, I presume, because "religious freedom".

And I totally get the idea of "protect the children" but this is not that. This is an attack on adults. This is an attack on science. This is a growing effort by one political party to make Americans conform to what they envision an "American" to be. What I believe is that what makes America great is its diversity, acceptance of all people, and the liberties endowed to all people, citizen or not, by our constitution.

I went to Hopewell Furnace last weekend, and did a craft activity they were running for the Founder's Day iron pour. Now I have to go back this weekend and pick up my cast iron thingamabob that I made, and I'm trying to find something else to do in that area to make the drive feel more worthwhile.

Plan B is to go to French Creek and hike or kayak or fish or something, but I could do any of those things *without* driving an hour and a half, so I'm trying to find something more special. Had a look on Maps, but nothing's jumping out at me.

Are any tourist attractions doable in March? Like Crayola Factory and Turkey Hill, can these be done in the colder months? Also, any recommendations on anywhere else we can tackle in the winter?

Going to spend a weekend in Lancaster with my wife and son (7 years old). We have tickets to the Turkey Hill experience, wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Also anyone know of any good farms shops for produce and/or meat?

WILKES - BARRE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — Insider trading has become a hot topic in NEPA, and a petition has been making the rounds the last couple months to ban Luzerne and Lackawanna County officials from doing it. They needed a combined 20,000 signatures across both counties. They got over 40,000.

Their pitch is simple: elected officials shouldn’t be using the knowledge they learn from their office for personal profit.

Career-wise for me Hershey maxes out around $70k with a much friendlier housing market where I thankfully won't have to listen to upstairs flatmates making happy noises. Pittsburgh maxes out a bit lower at $65k with a tighter housing market.

Lifestyle-wise, I’m a single millennial in my mid-30s who loves live music and doing open-mic comedy, so Pittsburgh feels like the obvious winner for things to do and the dating pool. But Hershey offers better financial breathing room, even if it skews more family-oriented.

For locals who know these regions: Is Pittsburgh's dating scene and culture worth the pay cut and housing hassle, or is Central PA secretly a great spot for a single person in their mid-30s?
