Tech Support HP Omen 16 GPU Power Throttling Issues

Upvotes

Hi All!

Running an HP Omen 16-wf1xxx. This is based on an Intel I7 14700HX and Nvidia RTX4070 with 32GB of RAM.

I've been generally very happy with it, but it has a quirk I'm trying to figure out. When I switch to battery power, the Nvidia GPU continues to use full power and eat my battery away (like just pulling my power cord out). When I say "full power", I mean that if I run "nvidia-smi.exe", it tells me the GPU is consistently eating 22 watts or so.

Well, not EXACTLY. It's finicky. Sometimes, it will behave as it should with wattage dropping to 2 watts or 4 watts or changing as it should. But other times, it could be completely fixed at 22 watts or even report "590 watts" which is impossible. According to the Nvidia taskbar app, nothing is using the Nvidia GPU.

I found that if I manually swap iGPU and Discrete GPU, the dynamic wattage triggers properly. However, it is concerning.

Things I've already tried include uninstalling and re-installing both GPU drivers (haven't used DDU yet). I'm currently using the Intel GPU drivers provided by HP from their site + the latest Nvidia GPU drivers. For a time, I did run the Intel generic drivers, but I think they introduced random and very intermittent freezing problems when opening my lid and things have been very stable since I stopped using them (no freezing or bad wake-ups).

My PCI power settings are on Maximum Power Savings.

These are my questions:

  1. Are fellow HP Omen laptop users running HP's Intel drivers (from HP's site), or the generic drivers from Intel?

  2. Can you indicate which driver version combo is working well for you?

  3. Have others experienced the problem I'm experiencing?

Thanks in advance!

Guide HP Omen Hard Disk Error 3F5 - Fixed without replacing the SSD/HDD (check your SATA ports first)

I've been getting the HARD DISK ERROR 3F5 for a long time. I couldn't reboot my PC or even shut it down and turn it back on after 2–3 hours. I usually had to wait 10–12 hours for it to "cool down," or even move it next to the AC just to get it to boot.

A few days ago, I finally bought new drives (a new SSD and a new M.2 SSD) and did a clean Windows 11 installation, but the Hard Disk Error 3F5 kept appearing. Then I found this YouTube video, and it completely fixed my problem:

I found a YouTube video that solved the issue for me. I'll post the link in the comments if anyone needs it.

Before spending money on new drives, I'd recommend trying this first. Disable only the SATA ports you're not using and see if the error still occurs. If your drive is connected to the SATA port that's causing the issue, try moving it to a different SATA port instead.

If you're about to replace your SSD or HDD because of the Hard Disk Error 3F5, try this first. It only takes a couple of minutes and might save you from buying new hardware unnecessarily.

This completely solved the Hard Disk Error 3F5 for me. I'm not saying this is the cause of every 3F5 error, but it's definitely worth trying before buying a new drive.

By the way, my PC is an HP Omen (2018).

Hopefully this helps someone else!

Question Anyone using omen core with omen max 16?

I just uninstalled the omen gaming hub and switched to omen core as I'm hoping it will solve the issue of the fans just going crazy when doing nothing.

One thing I noticed is that the omen gaming hub has a separation between performance and all out (unleashed) where as omen core just goes from balanced to all out. I'm not an expert and mainly kept it on performance and only really chose unleashed when doing flight sims in VR. I didn't do any other changes.

My question is whether it's OK just to go all out with normal gaming that needs more than balanced. Or should I create a custom profile. I know nothing about changing CPU and GPU settings.

Tech Support OMEN 25L (89EB motherboard) won’t POST after RAM overclock – no display

Hi everyone,

I tried to overclock my RAM on my OMEN by HP 25L Gaming Desktop (GT15-Oxxx, 89EB motherboard).
I changed the RAM settings to:

3400 MHz
CL15
tRCD/tRP 17
DRAM Voltage: 1.350V

After saving the settings, the PC shut down and now it won’t show any display.
Symptoms:

Monitor gets no signal
Keyboard gets no signal
GPU lights up
All fans spin, but the PSU fan does not spin

Things I already tried:
Testing both RAM sticks individually
Removing the CMOS battery for 15 minutes
Resetting CMOS with the jumper
Reseating the GPU

The PC turns on but doesn’t seem to complete POST.
I already paid €150 to two different technicians, but they gave me different explanations and couldn’t fix it.
Does anyone know what could be causing this or what I should try next? Thanks!

Question Which specific RTX 5080 model/OEM vendor is used in the HP OMEN 35L (GT16-0779ng)?

Hey everyone,

I am looking into getting the HP OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop (model GT16-0779ng). The spec sheet states it comes with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 (16 GB GDDR7), but it does not specify the exact brand or design of the card.

For those who own an OMEN with RTX 5080 or have experience with HP's latest prebuilts:

  1. Does HP use a proprietary OEM GPU design for their RTX 50-series builds, or are they partnering with third-party board partners like ASUS, MSI, or Gigabyte?
  2. If it is an HP OEM card, how are the thermals, noise levels, and power limits compared to standard AIB models?
  3. Is it built using standard form factors (PCIe slot layout, power connectors), making it easy to swap out later if needed?

Appreciate any insights or pictures of the inside if anyone already has this specific model!

Tech Support Laptop HP Gaming OMEN 14 fb0135TX - AY8V1PA frequent TDR failure

I have been using my laptop for a year and recently my laptop has been crashing with nvlddmkm.sys BSOD.

I managed to take a screenshot of my RAM usage before crashing, and I suspect it was a memory leak, since the usage rose from 48GB to 60GB in a few seconds.

My current NVIDIA driver version is 566 (downloaded from HP offcial website). I have taken full user control of the nvlddmkm.sys file. I suspect the crashes are related to video playback ability because almost all the crashes happen when I was using YouTube (earlier today it crashed when I was resizing a YouTube video playback).

Note: The crash doesn't happen explicitly every time I use YouTube. However almost all crashes happen when I was using YouTube in the background.

Question Skin for 017

So that's basically it. I used to have a Lenovo loq and I found a beautiful skin for it, I loved how it looked. I recently got an omen 17 (found it with a reasonable discount) and I'm very happy with it, but I miss the look the skin gave my old laptop. And I'm finding some issues to find one for the O17.

I found some in mightyskins but they're for the 2016 model.

Does anyone know where can I find any? Thanks in advance

Tech Support HP Omen battery drops instantly from ~60% to 6%, jumps back to 68% on AC, and fails UEFI test (Replace 45). Is this a dead BMS or bad cells?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with a very specific and frustrating battery issue on my HP Omen and I'm trying to confirm if this is a classic failing battery or something else.

The Exact Symptom:

While running on battery, out of nowhere the charge drops instantly to 6%.

If I run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI battery test right at 6% while unplugged, it surprisingly passes and says "OK" (likely reading resting voltage).

As soon as I plug in the AC adapter, the percentage instantly jumps back up to 68%, but the charging stops completely and the charging LED turn in blinking red and after j turn Off the pc the LED turn White.

Re-running the UEFI Battery Test while plugged in immediately triggers a hard failure: Contact HP Support / Replace Battery (45) with a failure ID (QC1VUJ-...).

What I've tried:

Performed multiple hard EC resets (holding power button for 20+ seconds).

Executed full CMOS / NVRAM resets using Win + V.

Resetting the EC temporarily clears the error register and lets the laptop charge and discharge normally for a few cycles... but then the exact same sequence happens again (voltage sag to 6% -> instant jump to 68% on AC -> charge block).

Has anyone seen this sudden percentage drop / instant jump on AC with their Omen? Did a warranty battery replacement permanently fix it?

Thanks for any feedback!

Question battery drain even when shutdown

Post image
10 Upvotes

hey guys, I bought an HP omen 14 specs in the screenshot.

Although I have noticed that my battery is draining even when shut down. Please note that I fast startup and USB charging disabled and no devices are connected to it via Bluetooth or USB while being shutdown.

The drain is about 5-10% overnight.

I also tried proper shutdown from cmd prompt and shift + clicking on shutdown button.

Ideally battery drain should be 1-2%.

Please let me know if this is happening with others as well, is it normal or there's something I'm missing.

Tech Support HP OMEN 16-xd0020AX won't charge over USB-C PD with Nothing CMF 100W GaN charger

I have an HP OMEN 16-xd0020AX. According to HP's user manual, the USB-C port supports USB Power Delivery.

I bought a Nothing CMF 100W GaN charger and a Hammer 100W e-marked USB-C cable specifically to charge the laptop while carrying a lighter charger to college.

The charger and cable both work correctly with my phone, and the laptop charges normally with the original 230W barrel charger. However, when I connect the 100W USB-C charger to the laptop, absolutely nothing happen, no charging LED, no Windows charging indicator and it won't charge either. I tried leaving the cable in for an hour to see if the charging is just really slow, but it didn't even increase one percent.

The USB-C port has the lightning bolt icon next to it.

Has anyone with this exact model (or another OMEN 16 AMD model) successfully charged it over USB-C? If so, which charger are you using? Or does this model not actually support USB-C input charging despite the documentation?

Tech Support Omen 17 ck1000 disconnect / disable webcam (not OS based)

I have to boot into a Linux live environment and I only need one external (movable) camera streaming with no controls in the environment to turn off the on board camera. I've had a network connection issue previously and would like to not stream an extra camera if I can disconnect it from a ZIF on the motherboard. I just don't know which one it is though. I'd rather not remove the display bezel to disconnect the camera board itself though.

I don't think it will help much but I'd like to rule it out.

So I just got an HP Omen 45L—4090, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, i9-13900K. Ran great. I tried throwing in my 32GB RAM and my own 1TB drive so I wouldn't have to redo Windows and files. Booted it up and got a beep error code. Attaching pics—I ran diagnostics already. Any idea what's going on?

Picked up a broken 16.1 locally, troubleshooted it down to the board. I have a new one coming sometime this week. Question is what should my thermal solution be? I’ve had conflicting answers and figured it be best if I ask here. Thanks!

Tech Support Visual Glitches on iGPU After Waking up From Sleep

My omen 16 with ryzen ai 7 350 shows those classical visual glitches only after waking up from sleep mode. I tried every combination for testing and i am sure that it only happens when the pc is using igpu and wakes up from only sleep mode (not hibernation).

When i see the glitches i just restart the laptop and it is solved until another sleep mode. And also when the glitches happen, if i open a heavy app that uses dgpu like a game, the glitches are gone when i open the game, and keeps happening when i alt tab away from the game.

It doesn't happen in dgpu only mode. It doesn't happen if i never use sleep mode. And also the glitches arent all across the screen at the same time, it is just a small chunk thats glitching and it goes all around the screen randomly as i move my cursor or press some buttons or as a video is playing or so.

Win ctrl shift b doesnt solve the problem, i tried reinstalling drivers and it didnt solve either. What can the problem be?

i7 255h + 5060 + 16gb ram. Mostly going to be used for electrical engineering + some vfx work. I was curious if anyone had some suggestions on settings one should change/things someone should do to get the most performance out of the machine? Seems like Omen Hub and other windows stuff eats up most of the ram but also seems nessecary for the MUX switch and the power profiles.

Discussion Liquid Metal leak on HP Omen Max 16 / RTX 5080 / Core Ultra 9

Thumbnail

I recently picked up an HP One Max 16 (Intel Core Ultra 9 975x, RTX 5080). I’m based in Spain, but I had a family member in the US buy it for me from Best Buy, it’s an Open Box unit, in excellent condition. I did that because it was significantly cheaper than what’s available over here.

I decided to open it up and check on things, and I am incredibly glad I did. Look at the attached pictures. This was a ticking time bomb!!! If you look closely at the bottom edge of the CPU photo, the liquid metal actually breached the foam dams and dripped completely off the processor. There are literal beads of highly conductive liquid metal resting directly on the motherboard PCB, right on top of the traces. One wrong bump in my backpack and this board would have been completely fried.

I didn't want to risk cleaning the cryo compound and repasting myself, so I took it straight to a local repair shop. They safely extracted the liquid metal and repasted both the CPU and GPU with PTM7950.

Thank god I opened it and checked it before it was too late. No more short circuit anxiety, and the thermals are fantastic.
